WTF RR: Nadal def. Fish 6-2 3-6 7-6(3)

Survival for Nadal. Looks out of match shape, out of match sharpness, and these courts are horrible for his game. But he fights and he got free points off his serve, and that's primarily what won him the match here.

Fish's forehand broke down in critical moments, as usual.

And some users say that Roger's match was "bad tennis quality"
This was shit.

Anyway, Rafa deserves that, I don't want a WTF without him in the SFs.

First set was bad and boring.
Second and third set were ok, some good rallies, not the level you expect two top 8 player to compete against each other, but absolutely "ok".
Third set was entertaining.

In the end Fish did 2-3 silly errors.
It is surprising (AGAIN and AGAIN) how players can play at the same level as the top 4 but then (in the end) they have no chance because they are not as mentally good as Nadal.

Awful match. Rafa doing absolutely nothing well, nothing. Should just go an prepare for DC.

Sunset of Age

Awful performance, very much resembling this afternoon's match between Fed and Tsonga - the major difference being that Fish obviously came back from an injury in stead of reaching the finals of the latest masters tournament. :o

Enjoyable, though, especially the third set which showed a lot of great shots from the both of them. For the most of it, it was utter garbage.

But just like I said after the Fed-Tsonga match this afternoon, where I commented that Rafa should've been watching this with pleasure - I think both Tsonga and Fed have watched this match with the same kind of pleasure feelings.

Rafa, just like Federer, will have to step it up BIG TIME to have a go at this title. :o
For now, congrats, Rafa! :cheerleader:

Mardy, nice fight, I honestly believed he'd go down 6-2 6-1 after that atrocious first set. Close but no cigar.

Predictable but fucking terrible nonetheless.
Nice donation of a service game at *3-2 and then in the tiebreak he couldn't make even the most routine of returns and forehands. Awful.
The silver lining is the fact that Fed and Tsonga should both steamroll Nadal.

BTW, I see Nadal is working hard to make sure the "moonballer" label is accurate. Some junior level moonballs off the backhand, what an inspiring player

fmolinari2005

It comes as a big shock for me Nadal having diarrhea. For his grunts I always thought of him as being a bit constipated.

(Seriously now?! This time around I don't think he did it to disrupt the match. It looks like Nadal had already discussed the bathroom break before Fish was about to serve and the decision was made he would wait for the service game before going to the toilet ... however, it seems that Fish had to crap out before on his own service game).

Geo
11-20-2011, 11:59 PM
Fish  :o He was so nervous as he's never been here before. He said in an interview recently that he can't believe he's among the top 8 or something and that he's not sure he belongs in the elite group :tape: That poor mindset showed in this match as he could have, and probably should have won :tape:

Nadal again gets the W despite playing crappy tennis   Hopefully Tsonga and Federer will make him raise his level, or just pummel him if he doesn't shape up.

Always good to see this ugly trash taken out. Mugdy is going 0-3 this WTF :haha:

Nadal :yeah: A bit rusty but got the job done by beating this old mug. Now rest up and win the next match :yeah:
A bit rusty? He must've been pretty terrible to be pushed so hard by an injured player. Had Mardy been health, your piglet would've been owned :wavey:

Injurd Fish makes Nadal work this hard. Lmao. Too bad Mardy wasn't healthy, or Nadal would've been squashed like a bug.

Nadal apparently had an stomach bug/food poisoning, so he wasn't actually at his best either...

Fish was angry about Nadal’s mid-match bathroom break

A mid-match bathroom break by Rafael Nadal left opponent, Mardy Fish, frustrated during their Sunday match at the ATP World Tour Finals.

Nadal was leading 2-0 in the third set when he asked to leave the court following a break of Fish's serve. The American appeared upset that chair umpire Mohamad Lahyani allowed the break in the middle of play rather than at the changeover after the third game. The umpire told Fish that he granted the break so as not to have Fish wait before his own serve. Television commentators repeatedly referred to Lahyani's ruling as "ridiculous."

When Nadal returned a few minutes later, he explained himself to an annoyed Fish. Rafa would go on to lose the next three games before recovering to win the match in a third-set tiebreaker.

Later, it was revealed Nadal had a stomach issue and spent the break vomiting in the locker room.

If true, then the bathroom break was warranted. The precedent of allowing a mid-match break is where it gets tricky, though. Over on our NFL blog, Shutdown Corner, we often write about the NFL's finicky rules that dictate what color shoes a player can wear and how a player celebrates in the end zone. It seems silly, for instance, that a player is flagged for saluting the troops on Veterans Day weekend. Then you see a situation like the Nadal bathroom break and realize why the NFL has to enforce everything, no matter the reason: If you allow the well-intentioned to flout the rules because they have a good excuse, it becomes impossible to regulate the athletes with bad intentions who will take advantage of a situation.

Nadal needed to use the restroom. What happens when a player locked in a tight match doesn't need to use it and asks for a break anyway? How is an umpire supposed to determine what's real or what's gamesmanship? They can't and that's why Nadal shouldn't have been allowed to leave the court.

Two things to keep in mind:

1) Fish gets pissy over these kind of things a lot.

2) Nadal is always injured, so an injury time out is always warranted ;)

I believe—for gamesmanship purposes only—if a player has an upset stomach, instead of running to the bathroom they should just unleash it right there on the court.

Think about it: not only would the sickie player get sympathy from the crowd, but it would allow him several minutes to regroup as the ballboys cleaned the mess up, and it would gross out his opponent so much that it would take several games before he could recover from the sight (and smell), if ever.

To quote Elle Woods, It's a completely brilliant plan.

Makes sense. Djokovic has done that.

Edit: Hmm I could have sworn that he threw up in a match before and I thought he threw up on court, but the internet tells me he left the court to do so. Sampras definitely threw up on court before.

It was Australian Open 2010 QF, Djokovic vs Tsonga. Novak put the towel over his mouth and it looked like he was coughing hard into it, but I think he threw up a little bit in his mouth (eewww!) and it was shortly after that that he left the court to throw up.

This is a good point. But if the guy really had to vomit, better to take the bathroom break than to puke all over the courts. Maybe they should just have a bucket on hand or something

Maybe the ref should go with them to the bathroom. If they judge that it wasn't a legitimate emergency, the player who had the bathroom break should be deducted a point the next game.
