Tsonga could have won this match. But he is a clown. And the more he chokes, the more people realize this. I can't believe how Roger just choked that second set. Tsonga has potential but he needs to be more consistent to reach another slam final. He won't win a slam ever though

Tennis was saved thankfully great last return from Roger on another bomb from Tsonga that had no business winning this though if you look at the overall match. Was gifted the 3rd game from Roger in the 2nd and just ballbashed his way into a 3rd set..

Ew, ew ew.
First two sets were sets where either player just wasn't there at all - awful display from Tsonga in the 1st, total mental walkabout from Fed in the 2nd. :help:

Third set saw an improved (well not much needed for that) level from both, and it looked like it would end up in a TB for a very long time, until Tsonga decided to throw the towel eventually by just stupidly ballbashing everything in sight. Of course, Fed smelled his chances there and rightly took the break and the match.

I hope it was just a matter of both players having to get used to the court, or whatever, but this level of play isn't going to cut it for either of them.
Rafa being in the crowd must have enjoyed watching this a lot. ;)

Unimpressive match in my opinion. The quality was horrendous in the first two sets, third set was actually decent and fairly competitive, but Tsonga's collapse at 4-5 was just ridicolous, one easy volley error and one double-fault to gift Fed a 0-30.

Pretty much what I expected. Fed little rusty in his 1st match, but good enough to win it. I expect him now to go 3-0 in group ( unless he can kick Nadull out of SF tanking his 3rd match, which he should definetely do if there is such a possibility )

True, but the negative sign being the Return of the Awful Mental Walkabout in the second. ;)
I can't help but feel that Tsonga had good chances to crack the Fed code until 5-4* when he somehow totally collapsed and Fed finally managed to take his chances. Tsonga might be as 'friendly' as to do that, I surely don't expect it from Rafa...

I was a little disappointed by this match. The first two sets were incredibly patchy and even the third, which seemed to be hotting up nicely, seemed to be suddenly be over in the blink of an eye.

I saw that Mirka Federer was sat next to (French footballer) Thierry Henry. It's probably about the only time i've seen her smile. Also nice to see that his parents have taken a break from walking the hills and making chocolate to come and watch him play.

Everyone needs to relax and realize this is the first match for either guy playing on a much faster surface with different bounce and speed than paris last week. No one really wants to play tsonga on this type of court let alone open their first match on it.

Fed was solid in the first set and tsonga was spraying errors all over. Fed had that bad serve game in the second when he was up 30-15 and tsonga picked up his level for the rest of the match. But third set both played well and federer picked it up and actually had a break point on tsonga serve earlier in the third set. Then fed returned 140 mph off his backhand which was cluth to win it. I know fed only gets better after this after playing the most dangerous guy in his group for his first match on this surface

Filo V.
11-20-2011, 03:34 PM
Tsonga didn't serve well enough and was overall too up and down, the backhand issues crept in and he made stupid errors. When he got hot he started steamrolling, but he predictably could not maintain that level. Roger was mostly average and that's all it needed to be, but he stepped up at the end of the third set and played his best tennis of the match when it counted.

This is a confidence win for Fed, the type you win when you're feeling good about things. Anyone expecting a thriller were naive.

He had a good chance to win the match. But just like that, he lost it. From the look of his face, it's like he didn't believe that it was over. And it doesn't matter how or why he got in the tournament. He's there and he deserves it.

It is arguable that Tsonga put in too much effort.

this wasn't a pretty match by any stretch of the imagination. Horrible 1st set from Tsonga, horrible 2nd set from Roger, horrible last game from Tsonga, wonderful forehand from Roger in that last game to set up 3 match points.

Still, Roger winning was the only acceptable outcome, so I'm not complaining. :) Except to say, of course, that he has to up his level in the next match.
