Rafa won something too

Nadal was selected as the recipient of the Arthur Ashe Humanitarian Award for his charitable efforts with the Rafa Nadal Foundation, which provides opportunities for socially disadvantaged youth.

:rolls:

Devastated that I have to agree with Start da Game, but the Edberg award is starting to become a bit of a joke. Qureshi deserved it, the other three all had moments of terrible sportsmanship this year. Oh well

JLH, change the title maybe to just say 'ATP 2011 World Tour Awards' or something, otherwise this will become a complete flame thread (it likely will already, but at least there will be an element of surprise when people click)

Delpo won Comeback, Milos won Newcomer and Bogmolov won Most Improved

To use the words of Mjau: Edberg must be spinning in his grave.
What a shit award it has become.

That Fed is the fan favourite is no surprise.

I'm curious what those moments of terrible sportsmanship were? What exactly was so terrible? Isn't the SE award chosen by the players? Perhaps there are things they see/know about that the average fan doesn't which influences their decision? Who decides on the list of players to be nominated for the SE award?

Of course we don't know what goes on behind the scenes--but if Berdych can make his vote based on one bitter interview from Roger, well  Novak's celebrations on (and off) court have been over the top and even Rafa has been a little pissy this year.

Naturally, I'm not a player, so I don't have the final say. Just speaking from a fan perspective and as someone who is just disappointed at the result.

Okay I'm sorry but I find those reasons kinda lame. I guess it's a matter of opinion, but I didn't find any of ND's over the top celebrations in an in your face kind of way. Not like he was rubbing his opponents noses in his victories.

Having said that I don't doubt there are lesser-known players who were/are also deserving of this award. I don't know why the players continue to give this award to only the top players...

Can't complain much. Apparently insignficant world number 4 wins the award, there's a rarity. Looks like the realists edged out the glory hunters. It was always going to be between Nole and Fed for obvious reasons, so between those two Fed is by far the more deserving winner. No debates necessary.

Um I have a feeling his fans are aware of these awards and they don't need to be reminded to go vote. Quite honestly anything that has the potential to be spammed with people voting multiple times is a joke. Not sure if that's the case with the fan favorite award but I rarely trust Internet polls for that reason.

Depends what you mean by fans. Die hard tennis fans know about this poll, but on twitter and facebook there are many more people who don't follow tennis that closely and only follow an athlete because he's popular.

Or maybe it's because Novak is just more of a sportsman in defeat then Nadal? :wavey:

Anyway, sportsmanship award definitely had non deserving winners in the last 3 years:

In 2009 Olderer got it during his worst sportsmanship days (breaking racquet, crying, swearing umpire..)

In 2010 Rafito was winner even though he should never win a sportsmanship award with delaying time between points, picking his butt, tactical MTO's, uncle Toni couching, giving no credit to Ljubo after loss @IW..

In 2011 Olderer got it again even though both Nole and Qureshi deserved it far more.

I don't see what so funny about Nole getting sportsmanship award this year?

If Rafito ever in life can get such award, there's nothing wrong with anyone else getting it really.

Not many players clap good shots of his opponent, say they were outplayed (unlike certain someone) and take defeat with a smile.

It's not an excuse and I didn't say that Djokovic did something wrong by promoting the poll to his fans. It's called being smart.
Rafa was dumb, which is why he came up third. He opened his twitter account later than Djokovic and has twice as many followers. If he would have asked them to vote, then there's no doubt that he would have gotten more votes. Probably not more than Federer but definitely more than Djokovic. If we also add facebook...

Qureshi deserved to get the SE award this year, imho, but well, congrats to Fed.

Having said that I don't doubt there are lesser-known players who were/are also deserving of this award. I don't know why the players continue to give this award to only the top players...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't it work this way: four players are pre-selected as candidates, whereafter the other players are asked to vote?
It's obvious that the award has also - or perhaps even most of all - become a kind of ATP PR-attention tool. To draw attention in the papers, you'll have to come up with some 'big names', hence, the past couple of years it's always been three top players and one 'excuse candidate' (this year Qureshi, last year Ljubicic) who is largely unknown to the masses. Needless to say, the 'excuse candidate' is virtually without a chance, as the voting players also know the importance of exposure in the media... so they'll vote for a big name, doesn't matter who.

Just my 2 cents, like I said, correct me if I'm wrong.

It's not an excuse and I didn't say that Djokovic did something wrong by promoting the poll to his fans. It's called being smart.

If there's one thing I vehemently refuse, it's voting for a candidate who actually begs for votes, doesn't matter who it is. Not everyone is a twitter/facebook slave.

That's okay with me, but one might think that a true TENNIS fan does check out the ATP site once in a while, and not just some player's twitter - unless all you care for is said player.

That award has been a joke for many years now.

The fans favourite award was no surprise. I'm sure Roger has more fans than all the other players put together. I believe he'll win this award even when he retires and is not on the ballot. :)

Hello? ATP: Association of Top Players.

As farcical as it is Fed's got it, it's preferable to Djoker winning it for the simple reason it means only two of the glory trio have picked it up. But Qureshi deserved it.

All three of them, even as someone who likes Fed, are pretty sourpuss losers.

He engorges his insatiable ego by spouting out obvious politically correct lies to make vapid Fedtards nod their heads in placid agreement as though he had made some kind of profound observation. Frauderer plays these goons, like he plays all the Fall Guys that are paid and set up to tank matches when they play him. Muger PLAYS them like a Parasitic Vampire sucking out the energy on their naive and shallow views of issues that are MUCH more complex than he would ever admit.

And when Frauderer manipulates the Press and the Tards, he can then continue to STEAL in open sight without any discriminating analysis of his crimes. He plays up the view of complete tardy compliance with obvious nods to Machiavelli while hypocritically and pointedly breaking every rule and concept of being a decent sportsman or human being. Even his Tards admit he is lying half the time he speaks, but they are always the first ones to make up excuses for Frauderer and forget about his hypocrisy. The whole scene makes Raferminator NAUSEOUS! Frauderer is a lame, dull, reptilian opportunist, and he is laughing at all of these Tards that continue to support while he gets away with crimes too serious to merit any redemption! Frauderer won that award via threats, and EVERYONE knows it!

Muger Frauderer, much like Lance Armstrong before him, knows what the politically correct thing to say to the media to win this crap, even though he is a COMPLETE Hypocrite.

Rafa should have won the Stefan Edberg award again this year. This is a complete TRAVESTY!!!

Muger Frauderer, you make me SICK!!!

RafaTards are in full form :haha: :haha:

We all know Rafa has more fans than Nole because he's more known than him, has been around longer and has won more tournaments, it's just that many of his fans didn't vote

Not something to cry about FFS, these awards are pretty much PR bullshit except for the YE #1.

And I actually voted for Qureshi, so TBH I don't give a shit if anyone else (Roger or not) won it

The only thing Olderer deserves is a complimentary wheelchair, not another Edberg award.

You must be seriously whacked if you put so much time and effort into this post.

It was a travesty when Nadal won it last year.

No surprise that Federer gets Fan Favorite.

I don't think he should've won Sportsmanship award tbh, saying this as a big fan. A bit surprising that it didn't go to Djokovic since players usually vote for just anyone who's having the best year.

Anyway, congrats to Federer... shows that regardless of who's no. 1, Federer is still the most loved and respected.

:haha: at Nadal tards in here. Even if I don't think Federer should've won it, Nadal is the last person who should be winning the SE award.
