Is it polite to ask a woman her age?

Johnny Groove

Traditionally, the word is no, you never ask a woman her age. I believe this is meant as women get older, you really don't wanna ask how old she is, it just comes off a bit disrespectful I guess. But what about young girls? How about when I am out, and I am not sure how old a girl is? Especially if she looks around 18. Maybe she is 18, but she could easily be 20, 21. But at the same time, she could just be a really matured 17 year old.

In this scenario, is it polite to ask a woman her age?

You are fully entitled to ask me my age, Jon. :p
Perhaps I won't answer.

WTF why should it be deemed unrespectful to ask a girls age, yet alright to ask for a males age? Double standards much?

Really? You're going to pretend that you give a damn about being "polite" to women?

I'll drop you a friendly hint, then: this (http://www.menstennisforums.com/showpost.php?p=11490051&postcount=1409) is impolite (to say the absolute least).

I think that your best bet for politeness to women is actually just to keep your mouth completely shut (to and about them) for about 5-10 years.

Hope this helps.

I think you can find out without asking. I can see why its important at that age to know for sure, so find a way to bring it up without asking the age straight up.

Don't see why not. Of course, it may not be too nice to ask a woman in her forties or fifties about the exact age, but if a barely adult girl gets insulted then so much the better, such a brat is not worth spending time with anyway :p

funny how our views of the world can drastically differ, not only would I fail my gynecology exam if I didn't ask my female patient about her age during my history taking interview, I would also fail if I didn't ask about details of her menstrual period, including duration, amount and color

I wouldn't have any problem with being asked for my age in any circumstances where it's appropriate and where it would be considered fine to ask a man his age.

I'm not in favour of the old-fashioned stereotype that it's rude to ask a woman her age because only women need to feel bad about getting older. Either let's all be okay with aging, or let's all be miserable about it equally

If a woman is vain enough to care about her age, you shouldn't be trying to fuck her.

Good answer :) I really don't think you should ask anyone their age. I know when you go to a doctor for the first time you have to fill out forms that ask for your date of birth, but that is a different situation.

I'm always doing it in a playful way. I say something like: "You look like you are xx years old." When she wants to answer I immediately say: "Say nothing. Did you know that you can find out the age of a woman based on two things? One is by looking at your hands (taking one of her hands) and the other one is by looking for wrinkles around your eyes." Then I guess her age and when it's wrong she will tell me and probably laugh.

I am glad you understand the difference between the settings of a social meeting and of a Ob&Gyn consultation. Because most girls would find it offensive if you also asked them if you could insert an speculum and see their cervix. Or check for breast nodules.

Great idea. The wrinkly eyed girl can give you a black eye to allow people to guess your age from.

By the way, it is good when a girl asks for your age. It indicates interest. However, you shouldn't give her a clear answer and make it a bit of a playful challenge. Don't be like other men and give her a boring direct answer.

Yep seems like feminists bring up the 'fairness' card only when it's them not being treated properly. :o

Additionally, arguing or disagreeing with anything feminists say is effectively sexist.

Exact reaction my eight year old cousin received after saying a similar thing to a girl. Kid also got a nice rub on the head.

You should definitely ask a woman her age. Not only that, but you should also ask to see some I.D. and then make photocopies of it for your records. Women love a man who cares about attention to detail :).

Seriously though if you're wondering how old a girl is who looks sort of between 16-25 surely you can get a good idea just by asking what she does for a living. If she goes to school there's your answer, if she works then you ask how long she's been there..."oh right, was that your first job after school then?". I suppose that avoids you having to outright ask their age. Even still, I wouldn't have thought most women would mind being asked their age - they just like the attention. I think the whole "never ask a woman her age" thing is from a bygone era.

Here's a trick. Around Chinese New Year or if dining in a Chinese restaurant. Just start talking about the Chinese calendar and the 12 animals. Women will always blurt out what animal they are because they think it's cute. Do some quick calculating and voila!

That's a good way to find out. Be creative, don't just blurt out that you want to know how old they are. Unless you are the bartendar, of course, then ask for their ID.

 seriously if she looks under 25 at all, be careful! You can end up in jail if she's underage, and some girls really do a good job making themselves look grown up. And if you see those TV shows with 4-year olds in beauty pageants, you gotta figure even by the age of 11 some have had a lot of practice wearing makeup, walking in heels and shaking their hips when they walk.

Which is just so scary and sad and wrong.

Yeah the whole beauty pageant thing is so wrong. I think girls wearing makeup at school is wrong too tbh.

I don't understand this whole cultural thing where kids are desperate to grow up fast. If only they knew that in five or ten years they'd be wishing they were a kid again!

Johnny, you can try the "Hey, look at my ID pic, can I see yours?". That way you'll know if she's underage.
