Nadal: I'm not the favorite at World Tour Finals
Ticker - Friday, November 18, 2011
Rafael Nadal says that he’s not the favorite to win the ATP World Tour Finals. The world No. 2 has only won one indoor tournament in a career where he's grabbed 46 titles overall.

"Roger (Federer) is winning, Andy (Murray) won three tournaments in Asia, and (Novak) Djokovic must have an incredible confidence for what he did this year. They are the favorites," Nadal told reporters.

Nadal opens play on Sunday in his round-robin group against American Mardy Fish. Roger Federer and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga are also in his group.

"Playing indoors is more favorable to them," said Nadal, who reached the final last year. "You love to talk about favorites, but I'm not. But that's just talk, the point comes when the competition starts. But this is the surface where I have worst winning percentage of my career."

There ya go Rafa.. Fly under the radar and then whoop some ass:worship:

Honestly I don't think I have ever heard Rafa say he was the favorite to win any Tournament. The press will say it especially at R.G., but I don't remember Rafa ever saying that himself at all.

I think that was his point. Rafa often says he's not the favorite when in fact he is.

Nadal obviously thinks he is favourite.

He often says that before he wins significant events.

Whenever Rafa flies under the radar, and has the pressure off of him, he tends to produce his best tennis. I do think he may not have total confidence in winning here, but this is also smart in terms of downplaying himself and potentially catching the other 7 players sleeping on him.

After all these years, they are going to be terribly shocked if he happens to start playing well:lol:

He is definitely not the favourite. I think ever since he got bageled by Murray, he hasn't been receiving much hype, especially since he's been out for 4(?) weeks. I'm sure he'll be fully rested for the WTF and could do some serious damage. People are forgetting already, that only last year he reached the final. Obviously he was in one of the best forms of his life, but you can never count Rafa out.

Blame the general PC-PR agents these guys have, if anything -

And just wait a minute, here.
Whenever a top player says anything 'out-of-order', even the most minute things, that may (and of course will) get pulled out of context, said guy gets lambasted for it over here on MTF and other tennis forums.

If they just say what they're taught to say by their PC-PR agents, the guys get slammed for being 'cliché', 'boring', etc.

They really cannot ever win, can they?

When he says he's not the favourite at events like RG or the other slams, does he honestly believe that? Does he believe that by saying it, it will lessen the pressure and the press won't be all over him anyway?

I wonder about his intentions.

When Rafa says he is not the favorite at RG, he means in the sense that the crowd does not favor him- because they always cheer when he loses a game, set or, match. It is remarkably perceptive of him to finally pick up on that.

classic nadal... has everything you'd want from a pre-tourney rafa quote... exquisite timing... downplaying of form... denial of greatness... playing with the media... toying with the bookmakers for tio tone... and all this performed right before he rips some poor bastard a new one... usually a spainiard, but pescado this time... oh yeah, he's in form alright... make no mistake, this is a pre-davis cup event for nadal...

i expect to see the mallorcan bull frothing at the mouth for a showdown with an ailing djokovic... cos a breadstick has more value than a bagel down at the Head To Head Bakery...

 this did make me laugh because it's pretty much true.

I love how Rafael is really modest about things, but he definitely does under-exxagerate his chances sometimes to the point that it can be a bit annoying.

but definitely it is true in this case. I'm not surprised or bothered that he answered a question like this, the real curious thing is why did SETSAMPRAS find this worthy enough to make a thread about. why don't we go ahead and make a thread discussing Andy Roddick's answer to "do you consider yourself a favorite at Roland Garros?" hahah, it's just pointless and obvious, the answer in both cases.

Point is, whatever any top player says (most of the time, in answering a question by journos - but that fact seems to pass about everyone by), there will always be an outburst of hata's/dislikers ready to rabidly dissect the quote in desperate search of finding something 'bad' to piss on. Most often followed by a deadly silence from those same hata's as soon as their own favourite does/says the same thing.
