Wrote this elsewhere but thought i'd share it:

Here's my commentary of the draw:

12:30 - Thought i'd post on here as i'm listening to it live on the radio. It's being aired in the middle of a newsy discussion type show, been listening for 10 minutes and they've not even mentioned it yet.

12:32 - Still waiting, they're talking about midwives!

12:34 - They've just crossed over to UK parliament to hear someone answering some parliamentary question or something. Normally i'm into politics, but now i'm just getting annoyed because I want tennis.

12:35 - Presenter now explaining the implications of the answer to said question.

12:36 - Now they're back to parliament.

12:37 - So I checked twitter:
5livetennis
Draw will be slightly delayed due to an important question in the House of Commons - that's the way we roll at 5 Live, no rules!!

12:39 - Still no sign of the draw. Things hotting up in parliament though. Now going to the news, still no mention of the draw.

12:42 - Sports man says the draw is imminent :)

12:43 - Shelagh Fogarty, presenting the radio show, takes the opportunity to read out some more texts and tweets about midwives before going over to what she refers to as "that tennis draw".

12:44 - Finally over to Jonathan Overend, the excellent BBC Tennis correspondent. He speaks with such passion, only thirty seconds in and you can sense his excitement about the upcoming tournament.

12:45 - All players apparently fit and raring to go. Djokovic apparently already in London. Now playing a clip from Federer, who says everybody can beat everybody. He points to the del Potro vs Davydenko final to justify his claim.

12:51 - Apparently there's to be over 250,000 spectators at this event!

(the draw happened too quickly for me to be able to write about it as it happened)

Nope.Nadal will start with Fish and Federer with Tsonga. The winners and losers of the first matches will play second. So only way for Federer and Nadal to play last is if one of them wins and the other loses the first match

I really hope Fish is healthy enough to play. For those of you who believe that his qualification is pathetic, it's either him or Tipsarevic... pick your poison

Tsonga has had a tendency to lose after a big result the previous week... probably from being worn out. If he is really unlucky, he might have to play a healthy Fish first and might lose. This will destroy his chances at making the semis even if Nadal blows it again.

The only close matches in group A will be Ferrer-Berdych, and Djokovic-Murray.

Group B will be really fun. I am excited to watch Nadal-Federer, Federer-Tsonga, Tsonga-Fish, Tsonga-Nadal, and Fish-Nadal. Federer v. Fish will be a demolition if Fish doesn't retire.

Exactly my thoughts. Group B is definitely stronger.
Personally for me the draw is shit. The players I like are in one group and players I don't really like to watch are in the other group. And in general I think a Tsonga vs Federer match is more interesting than Murray vs Ferrer and should be better quality.

Anyway Nadal got some pretty good indoor players in his group. Gonna be dangerous for him

Group A feels like a 3-way race because I don't see Ferrer doing anything. I could easily see Djokovic be left in the dust if he's still troubled by his shoulder. Both Murray and Berdych has looked better than him the past month

Voo de Mar
11-15-2011, 03:29 PM
If I could I'd switch Ferrer with Tsonga. Three attacking players in one group (Federer, Tsonga, Fish) it's unbalanced comparing to the group A where the most attacking player (Berdych) is less offensive than each of the three guys in the group B.

it should be just like a regular tournament.

This format ruled in years 1982-84 (12 players, best 4 guys had 'bye' in the 1st round thus a winner of the tournament could win 3 or 4 matches).
In '85 the draw was made for 16 players, and in my opinion it's the best possible scenario for "Masters' because often there's no visible difference in capability between players ranked 6-12.

Well, my friend, perhaps you don't like it but this RR format is where we get to see the best tackle the best for a change. that's the beauty of this format. Stop grudging it.

I mean who wouldn't want to see Fed play Nadal or Nole twice in the same tournament. 8 of 10 would. Perhaps purists wont but its still a new match every time they play.

Stefwhit
11-15-2011, 06:08 PM
I might bei in the minority but seeing the match-ups u actually want to see makes the RR format great to me. This especially holds true on the WTA where u can go all year without the big names squaring off. the dead rubber matches that mean nothing toward the end are annoying, but all in all the RR fomat works great in the YECs

For me the Murray-Djokovic match will be the most interesting. Berdych-Djokoovic will aslo be fantastic if both players can play well.

The real debate is will there be a surprise 4th player? Because for the past few years, we've successfully predicted the top-4 and they've always made it in such close scenarios. The only player with an outside chance seems Tsonga (Fish/Berdy/Ferru not strong enough to cut it.)

Nadal has no injury..... he just took some time off ahahha, this is getting nuts, when people state that Nadal has injuries when he DOESNT even say he does.

how far can it go

The WTF (considering the draw rigging etc)is pretty much our only chance to see Fedal, Murderer, and Djurray matches, which makes it a great format.

I think the groups are fairly balance, although I'd prefer to see Tsonga and Berdych switched.
Poor Ferrer- his best chance of a win is against Fish, and he's in the other group.
I like Djokovic, but I have a feeling he might withdraw here.

it's quite clear Nadal is not injured when only weeks ago he was playing and doing fine in Tokyo.

he said he was taking time off to prepare and never mentioned anything about an injury.

if anything you should have high expectations given it's quite obvious his objective is to win the WTF by basically skipping most of the indoor season.

he probably won't do it but besides being a bit rusty there are no indications that his form is bad or that any sort of injury has surfaced. certainly do not prepare yourself to use that as an excuse if he loses, thanks. :)

I might be in the minority but seeing the match-ups u actually want to see makes the RR format great to me. This especially holds true on the WTA where u can go all year without the big names squaring off. the dead rubber matches that mean nothing toward the end are annoying, but all in all the RR fomat works great in the YECsTotes agree with you :)

Normally, I wouldn't have anything against this event.. Back when there used to be more then just a handful of 3-4 legitimate threats to bring some wonder to the table ( that included MS titles, Slams and the YEC) . . I enjoy it to be honest.. But when you got the standard 4 guys ( same as always for the last what how many years really doing nothing but just interchanging their rankings within their respective slots) and the rest just going all for the ride, NEVER winning anything of note, not achieving enough, I personally could care less if they are there or not.. We will just be interested in seeing who out of the top 4 wins. The other 5-10 is very weak right now with no real hardware under their belts.. Thats FRUSTRATING as a fan to see.. We want more then just the "4 usual suspects". We should want some wonder and intrigue.. And the field outside the top 4 bring NONE!!

Over the past few years its gotten to a point where the top 4 guys have distanced themselves so far from the pack and the pack not sprinting to catch up but slowing down further and further it makes for bad viewing and lack of intrigue and wonder IMO.

Fuck the men's side nowadays. ROFL!!!!!

Discuss and Predict:

Group A:

I expect Murray to place first (Group A winner). And Djokovic to place second (Group A runner up) (injury issues).

Group B:

I expect Federer to place first (Group B winner). However, Tsonga to place second (Group B runner up) (Nadal's weak on this surface).

Semifinals:

Murray vs Tsonga= Tsonga upsets Murray in 3 tight sets.

Djokovic vs Federer= Federer to defeat him in 2 normal sets.

Finals:

Tsonga vs Federer= Federer to defeat Tsonga in 3 normal sets to send a message for the 2012 season.

"Fast" courts is of course open to question, but excluding clay....

Nadal-Fed: hard 5-1, indoor 0-3, grass 1-2
Nadal-Fis: hard 3-1, indoor 1-0, grass 3-0
Nadal-Tso: hard 3-1, indoor 2-0, grass 0-1

London isn't fast though, it's medium/slow when built, maybe medium with a few matches. Still, Fed has played him on this surface (ie indoor Greenset) three times, and won all three. Of course two were a while ago, but still.

This is the best chance for Tsonga to upset Nadal (he's at his most vulnerable both surface and serving). On top of that, he'll get another look at Federer. He needs to take advantage of this draw. He's also defeated Fish at the U.S. Open and knows how to play well against him. His forehand should be enough for Fish as long as he doesn't over hit the points. If he fails to advance to the SF, he'll have deceived himself a bit.

Safin picks Djokovic to win ATP World Tour Finals
Ticker - Thursday, November 17, 2011

Former world No.1 Marat Safin picks Novak Djokovic to win the ATP World Tour Finals at the 02 Arena in London, which starts on Sunday.

"It looks like Djokovic can’t lose a match at the moment when he’s playing well," said Safin, who will play the BNP Paribas Zurich Open on the ATP Champions Tour next February. "Djokovic has more experience now than ever and he has great fitness. [Rafael] Nadal is going to be tough but I think Djokovic and also [Roger] Federer are the ones to beat because it’s indoors. Of course Nadal is always dangerous but I believe in Djokovic. Andy Murray? He is a great player, a smart player and I respect him, but I don't see much hope for him (at this event). Sorry."

Thomas Muster, the 1995 French Open champion, picked Federer or Murray.

"It's hard to say but I like Roger Federer and Murray," said Muster. "We'll have to see how Djokovic is doing health-wise and Nadal hasn't played as many matches as the other guys leading up to London, so I'd probably pick Federer or Andy Murray."

I believe in signs and Roger and Nole are the ones standing next to the trophy. One of these two will win it. ;)

Safin picks Djokovic to win ATP World Tour Finals
Ticker - Thursday, November 17, 2011

Former world No.1 Marat Safin picks Novak Djokovic to win the ATP World Tour Finals at the 02 Arena in London, which starts on Sunday.

"It looks like Djokovic canít lose a match at the moment when heís playing well," said Safin, who will play the BNP Paribas Zurich Open on the ATP Champions Tour next February. "Djokovic has more experience now than ever and he has great fitness. [Rafael] Nadal is going to be tough but I think Djokovic and also [Roger] Federer are the ones to beat because itís indoors.

 Marat has a way with words, for sure.

Just cant see Roger winning this one. To me he got lucky in Basel and Paris. He didnt have to face Djokovic or Murray. Just cant see him getting past two of Djokovic, Murray or Nadal. Just cant. You can Quote that.:smoke:

Will Federer-Nadal play on Tuesday if they both win their matches on Sunday?

Berdy :hearts:

Haha, u know how massive tennis players are when the 6ft 5in Berdych looks average height compared to those players who are behind him.

I predict that in the very near future, players will be all around 7ft yet with agility and speed that the likes of Rafa/Nole could only dream of.

Pretty sure they're lower. Melzer is not taller than Djokovic

Did Djoko and Fed go shopping together? Their suits look identical.

At least Pics managed to find a dark suit this year.

Lets hope so overranked as shit already. Just take a look of Ferrers playing activity of the year. He will top the list of cakedraws maybe Fish comes 2nd haven't looked..

Everybody owns Ferrer.

He's always been a 500 level player.

Mugs like Fish, Ferrer and Tsonga shouldnt't be allowed to play the YEC. None of them have accomplished anything of note this year.. No big tournaments won. Just have the top 4 and leave it at that. No one else has a chance

Fish and Ferrer will be out with 0-3.
