New year.
The first title came in the 2nd month, when Jo won Marseille by defeating Tomas Berdych in the final 3-6 7-6(6) 6-4

ALLEZ, JO!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well guys. I have decided to create a brand new thread about the StrongaWagon. Who needs to be revived like in the good-old times.
2011... A year of surprises. Tsonga getting strong again, putting the so called "Duopoly" under his strong arm and punching 'em like Ali.

The Ali of tennis is back. He's just a deserved top 10 again, 2011 is the new 2008.
He's the only player that the "big 4" fear.
He's the only one who can stop the non-slam-france.

He's waving the french flag again, and this time, there's no mercy.

http://www.serperuano.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/11/Jo-Wilfried-Tsonga.jpg
They fear him... And they're right doing it.

Well, very nice year on 2011, time to 2012. Jo is now having a deserved rest of 15 days, he will spend five at I. of St.Maurice and 5 more at Reunion Island, where he will play an exho vs Gael Monfils on grass on 2 December. On December 12th, he will start again his physical training and on 27 December he will play an exho on Abu Dhabi, with Nole, Nadal, Federer, Ferrer & Monfils. Then he plays Doha[3-9 January], and an exho in Kooyong for preparing A.O. In Kooyong he will play with Gilles & Gael among other important names.

At the moment Jo is up 62 10 against Ferrer, if he wins he would play Nadal. It's more about Ferru's bad play than Jo playing huge. Jo is slicing 75% of his BH:p, and his FH is the best thing today, he has 7 FH winners or so

2-2, Ferrer upping his game actually.

His movement is really bad today :(, i know it's off-season, but he needs to train his footwork in order to play better the Australian Open.

Tough game, but he manages to hold saving a BP with an incredible Fh winner. 4-3 up.

Great game from Jo, he holds to love. He hit a 1 handed BH passing that was , and also a couple of good forehands.

5-4 up, Ferrer serving 15-0

Jo saves Set Point for Ferrer, with a good passing shot. 5-6 down on 2nd set Tie-Break. But now, set for Ferrer, 7-6(5). We will go onto a decider, 6-2 6-7.

Jo didn't played as agressive as he plays on the TB, and Ferrer is starting to play at a good level.

Ferrer 5-2 up. Jo lost his focus, and his game is very up and down.

Gillouthe best
12-29-2011, 12:20 PM
And it's done now, Ferrer defeats Tsonga by 2-6 7-6(5) and 6-2. He played with a lot of ups and downs, and he has to improve his footwork and get his backhand better, he had like 25+ UE's on the BH side. Next Stop is Doha, where is the third seed.

Gillouthe best
12-31-2011, 06:18 PM
The Doha draw is out, pretty good draw for Jo-Willy :):

Alex Bogomolov Jr(RUS,6)- Filippo Volandri(ITA)
Albert Ramos(SPA)- Dmitry Tursunov(RUS)
Jabor Al Mutawa(QAT,WC)- Flavio Cipolla(ITA)
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga(FRA,3)- Malek Jaziri(TUN)

He should make the semis easily, tough he lost to Bogomolov in Cincinatti 2011, but I think he will defeat him easily. In the semis, Federer is most likely to appear :o( Jo has lost the 4 last times to him).

Jo can win the tournament! Jo can beat Fed right now.
I think Fed's gonna give his best at the AO, but before that, Fed would not be in his "God-like mode" and Jo can win the match with his awesome Forehand.

And I also see Jo beating Rafa, Jo at his best would OWN Rafa in Hardcourts.

Hey, I'm Lewis. I've liked Tsonga for several years now and him and Andy Murray are my two favourite players and I figured that I wanted somewhere to discuss his matches etc. It was difficult watching him last year up until Queens where his season really took off. He has a good chance of taking over Ferrer after the AO and if not definetely Indian Wells and Miami.

I am hoping he can improve clay court form and get some quarter finals appearances in the big masters/french open. Disappointed that he lost in another exhibition match (after the Ferrer match in Abu Dhabi), losing to Melzer. But I was glad to hear that it was rainy, VERY windy and that Jo arrived late from Doha, so he's only been in Australia a day.

Hopefully he can beat Nishikori tomorrow and get even better prepared for AO and that he isn't drawn in Andy Murray's quarter!

PS. How active is this thread during the season?

It indeed has been quiet here lately.

Jo's 1/8th in AO 2012.

Gilles Simon FRA (12) v Qualifier
Julien Benneteau FRA v Karol Beck SVK
Joao Souza BRA v Matthew Ebden AUS
Stephane Robert FRA v Kei Nishikori JPN (24)

Marcel Granollers ESP (26) v Jesse Levine USA
Frederico Gil POR v Ivan Dodig CRO
Qualifier v Ricardo Mello BRA
Denis Istomin UZB v Jo-Wilfried Tsonga FRA (6)

I don't know what to make of Jo's mess of a showing at the Kooyong exo. Losing to Nishikori again probably did him no favours. Why play there at all if he was jet-lagged and exhausted?

He has a really great section and should make it to the quarters without a problem. Not even Simon, the highest ranked seed in his section, has the firepower to beat Tsonga. Although I hate the fact he could play Andy Murray in the Quarters. Seeded to meet in the finals or semi's would have been fine, but I would hate to see either lose.

And as for Kooyong I too was disappointed and shocked at the results but I read reports on the matches and the conditions sounded utterly dreadful. There were tonnes of rain delays and the wind was apparently unplayable. Apparently chairs were being blown over and Melzer hit a 120 KMPH ace, aswell as some shots hitting the players because of such high winds. Then you factor in the jetlag, tiredness and the fact he got 2 hours sleep before the Melzer match then there isn't any point in making anything out of it.

That would be really cool.

He defo has a chance but Andy has been playing really well. They usually have good matches however. I hate watching them play, especially as early as the Quarters. I think if it came to it I'd want Andy Murray to win in 4 or 5 sets, in a really high quality match, so Andy can get his 1st slam under his belt. After that then if they met again I could support Jo knowing Andy already had his slam.

Jo defeated Istomin 64 36 62 75. Tight win, Mello next on R2. Today he had 11 aces, 44 W, 45 UE'S. Serve was a little bit off, only 49% of first serves in, and an average of 129 km/h of speed on second serve.

He should beat Mello comfortably tough.

I hope Tsonga can better 2011. AO wasn't his best, but Nishikori really isn't a good matchup for Jo. It's matches like that that make me wonder whether it might be time for a coach to help him a little tactically. I only caught the 2nd set, and even then missed a couple of games. But he seemed to play pretty well. No break points faced, 65% 1st serves in, lost only 4 points on serve and hit 10 aces so a superb serving performance and he obviously got the breaks to win. Really, really disappointing from Jo against Del Potro. Lost 67(1) 26, he didn't even had a single BP. His results this year have been consistent, W @ Doha, R4 @ A.O, SF @ Marseille & QF @ Dubai, but he lacks a big win, best this year was vs. Monfils, 0-2 against top-10 players...

Also H2H against Delpo gets worse, 1-5.

Despite the match against Stepanek not being 'clean' for want of a better word, his serving statistics were really impressive:

No breaks and only 1 break point faced which he saved with an ace.

61% won behind 2nd serve.

Mixed bag with Tsonga today. He lost his serve in a pretty frustrating way and his 1st serve percentage was dreadful. But when his 1st serve went in he won most of the points and even on his 2nd serve he only just under 60% I think. Oh and he played the big points well. Hopefully he can beat Mayer and set up a potential meeting with Nadal.

The problem for Jo this year is that he lacks a big win/ big result, unlike last year when he got 10 Top-10 wins :p. Another bad thing is that he's having easy draws until QF in every events and sometimes he can't take advantage ( eg. Nishikori at A.O & Nalbandian in Indian Wells). Even with our view that he's playing bad ( which he certainly is) he is #6 in the rankings, with a 900+ lead over Berdych, and #11 in the RACE, only 140 pts. away from Top-8.

A brief resume about his season so far:
W: Doha
SF: Marseille
QF: Dubai, Miami
R4: Australian Open, Indian Wells

Best win coming over #14 Monfils in Doha, 0-3 vs Top-10's, 18-5 W/L ratio.

Overall solid results, but considering his great play at indoor season in 2011 we expected more.

I don't think we can complain too much, he's doing so much better than he was this time last year, albeit slightly disappointing afer his run at the last part of 2011. He is really in need of a big result and I fear that it won't come until the grass court season, as clay is definitely not his strength. Having said that, hopefully he can get a masters QF and live up to his seeding at RG and that would be fantastic.

I think the the one thing that is in Jo's favour is that he is so confident on grass I have the feeling as soon as that part of the season swings round he is almost guaranteed to find some form, which hopefully he can carry into the entire 2nd half of he year like last year.

Oh, and he'll be no.5 next week if he wins one of his DC matches. (pretty sure on this)

Didn't expect France to wi, or Jo to beat Isner. Horrible decision to play on clay. Jo's worst surface and Isner's best. Still, he's up to no.5 and and has some points to gain during the clay court season. To be honest, losing in 4 sets to Isner isn't that bad considering it was on clay.

However, yesterday, Tsonga was sorry he could not tire him longer, "If Gilles could win a set Friday, the little that was missing to make a difference, it might have been."

The weird thing about Tsonga this year is that despite him playing poorly (and obviously so to people who watch tennis) he has won atleast 2 matches in every tournament he has entered, so he has had no really early losses. Hopefully he can have a really good clay court season (a semi in monte carlo hopefully and then atleast a quarterfinal in Madrid or Rome) with a Quarter-Final at the French. He is still lcking the big win that would give him loads of confidence. His best win this year, was ironically, on clay vs Del Potro. Apart from that, he hasn't beated a Top-10 all year , 1-6 record vs them.

At the beginning of Wimbledon I had a dream - see Federer and Tsonga at the final.
What a pitty Tsonga yesterday couldn't win. I agree with @TheShowMustGoOn - the OHB cross passing shot was the best shot in the whole tournament. I've seen and loved his OBH down the line passing shots but this is very difficult for a 2BH player.
 He deserved the final after what happened in RG.

Time for Jo to rock it this Olympics.
I think in Wimbadann in best of 3 matches, he could make some great damage.

I'm extremely excited for the Olympics. Will be epic if he brings the kind of tennis he showed against Murray in sets 3 and 4.

Come on Jo! I believe in you.

This could be hard :scared:

He has the hardest draw from all the favorites, but I'm glad he's not on Roger's side at least.

His injuries should be fully healed by now, I expect him to make a great run.

Am I the only one who think he can beat Nolevic?

of course he can. he had 4 mp's at the french. clay is his worst surface, grass his best. :)

BroTree123
07-27-2012, 12:10 PM
Right now I don't think the surface is the problem, it's the mentality more than anything. Tough to say whether Tsonga can ever get another crack at Nole, but we shall see in the future

Okay, the QF match we was waiting for.
Djokovic - Tsonga

Let's hope he is fresh enough.

Would be epic if he managed to get a medal in both singles and doubles, something I'm sure Serena will accomplish as well.

And a Silver it is. Would have been nice to get the Gold but good effort anyway :sobbing:

He's had a phenomenal week beginning from his two opening epic matches, especially against Raonic...fucking amazing. And to top it off, a Silver medal. Something that will be remembered for the rest of his life

What an incredible effort indeed, having spent the most hours on the courts among all fellow athletes! Gold would have been epic but at least it was lost to the Bryan brothers.

Now win Toronto with the crap field and take the momentum into Cincinatti and US Open!

JoWillyTso
08-09-2012, 09:06 PM
Shame Tsonga couldn't do much in Toronto. He had a semifinal to defend and it now looks like there is no chance of being seeded 4th for US Open (if Nadal pulls out).

He needs to relax now... In his good form he can easily trouble the big 4.
Cincy and Winston-Salem will be a good training before the USO.

Jo out of Cincinnatti. :(

Has a lot of points to defend the rest of the season. I was hoping Jo could capatalise on Rafa being injured and getting into the top 4. :(

Tsonga needs to get a coach and spend the rest of the year improving and come back in 2013 as Tsonga 2.0

After a pretty bad USO-series, Tsonga won Metz playing a very solid tournament.

I'm ok with the Beijing final, I mean he played a great 1st set and lost to the world number 2, come on!
Pretty amazing.

Now, he's in QF of Shanghai, Berdych will be his rival, COME ON TSONGA!!!!!

I can see him making semis, and, if he has a good day, even the final! :D

Zepploydath

He won all 3 singles matches in straight sets but lost all three mixed doubles matches. Unfortunately France had to retire from the final match with Tsonga injured, hopefully it's not too bad and just precautionary as he seems to be finding some form that evaded him pretty much all of last year.

His performance today was the most telling imo that he has indeed improved some aspects of his game, as Anderson has played really well. Namely the RoS which would have allowed Jo to win this match more comfortably hadn't Kevin been so good at picking up those low balls. Hopefully this small injury can go away fast. I think he is ready to win a slam.

Murray an win AO and Wimbledon, Djokovic the French and Jo the USO and it will be perfect year.

Nice to know he played well against Anderson as well.

Not sure what to make of that result. I missed the match and it sounded like he has improved a lot and the better player/should have won. As long as he's making progress and does better in the Masters this year then he has a chance. Wimbledon will always be his best chance of good results as far as Slams go.
