November 7, 2011 01:20 PM

The USTA announced today that it has agreed to a new three-year contract to host its annual Australian Open Wild Card Playoffs at the Racquet Club of the South (RCS), a USTA Certified Regional Training Center in Atlanta. The 2011 Kia Australian Open Wild Card Playoff, which will be held December 16-18, will mark the third consecutive year that it has been contested at the RCS. The event will also feature an exhibition match on Friday, December 16, that will be played in a World TeamTennis format, with U.S. Davis Cup Captain Jim Courier and USTA Player Development General Manager Patrick McEnroe serving as the team captains.

Eight men and eight women will compete in the wild card playoffs. The USTA secured the opportunity through a reciprocal agreement with Tennis Australia where the two national tennis federations exchange wild cards for the 2011 US Open and the 2012 Australian Open.

"The Racquet Club of the South has been a great host for our Australian Open Wild Card Playoff the past two years. The Atlanta tennis community has embraced the event and we expect interest to continue to grow in the coming years," said McEnroe. "The event is a great showcase for our players and promotes our philosophy of having them earn their way into Grand Slam events through competition."

Teenagers Ryan Harrison and Lauren Davis won last year’s events to earn main draw wild cards into the 2011 Australian Open. Harrison also won the event in 2009. Additionally, former Georgia Tech standout Irina Falconi won a USTA playoff to earn a main draw wild card into the 2011 French Open before subsequently reaching the third round at the US Open, and Madison Keys won a USTA playoff to earn entry into the 2011 US Open, where she became the youngest player to win a main draw US Open match since 2005.

The fields for the wild card playoffs will be determined in the upcoming weeks.

Ginepri, Oudin among players participating in 2011 USTA Australian Open Wild Card Playoffs
November 11, 2011 04:11 PM

Robby Ginepri and Melanie Oudin are among the four women and three men who have been invited to participate in the 2011 Kia Australian Open Wild Card Playoffs, held December 16-18, at the Racquet Club of the South, a USTA Certified Regional Training Center in Atlanta. The complete field for the eight-man and eight-woman playoff will be announced as players are confirmed.

The USTA and Tennis Australia have a reciprocal agreement in which men’s and women’s singles main draw wild cards into the 2011 US Open and the 2012 Australian Open are exchanged.

The four women who will compete include: Oudin (Marietta, Ga.), who in 2009 became the youngest American to reach the quarterfinals at the US Open since Serena Williams in 1999, and who helped lead the U.S. to back-to-back Fed Cup finals in 2009-10; Jamie Hampton (Auburn, Ala.), who successfully qualified for the 2011 Australian Open and who reached a career-high WTA ranking of No. 116 in April; Alison Riske (McMurray, Pa.), who reached the quarterfinals of the 2011 Wimbledon tune-up event in Birmingham, England, and who has won two $50,000 events in France this year; and Coco Vandeweghe (Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.), who broke into the WTA top 100 this year and reached a career-high No. 89 in April. Vandeweghe won this event in 2009 to earn a wild card into the 2010 Australian Open, and also reached the final of last year’s event.

The three men invited to compete include: Ginepri (Kennesaw, Ga.), the only active American male besides Andy Roddick to reach the semifinals of a Grand Slam event (2005 US Open), who is coming back from an arm injury that he suffered in 2010; Denis Kudla (Arlington, Va.), who reached the quarterfinals at the ATP World Tour event in Newport, R.I., in July; and Jack Sock (Lincoln, Neb.), who in 2010 became the first American to win the boys’ singles title at the US Open since Roddick in 2000.

Ryan Harrison and Lauren Davis won the 2010 playoffs to earn wild cards into the 2011 Australian Open.

Robby's having his classic giveaway match. So many errors in so little time, it's actually quite amazing how someone who doesn't lose a set going into the final can suddenly just give a match away in straight sets by his own pyschological breakdown. But if anyone can do it Robby can.

Congrats to Jesse! :D

Robby will probably try to qualify into the AO, winning the first two rounds, only to lose in the last round, like he's done before.

Wow @ the scoreline. Hope he's not injured again and it was just a mental thing...

With Robby at least until these last few years it is normally always a mental thing  He was #15 in the world when he was seeing a sports psychologist. Why he quit the sports psychologist I don't know? But since he quit with the sports psychologist he might as well have quit tennis because he really hasn't done much winning of any kind since
