18 year old British prospect Oliver Golding today defeated Italian Matteo Marrai after having been granted a wildcard entry into the Loughborough Challenger tournament. In beating Marrai, who is ranked 482 places above him, Golding served 19 aces and won 35/36 points on first serve. He converted 2/3 break points, also saving the two he faced on his own serve.

In the 2nd round he'll face German Peter Torebko, who yesterday defeated British No.2 James Ward in three sets.

Golding, a former Junior World No.2, won the 2011 US Open Boy's Singles title after beating No.1 seed Jiří Veselý in the final and will be hoping to emulate this kind of success in the seniors now that he's turned professional.

Good win for Oliver, did what was expected, and his next round is also winnable. Winning the title would be a huge accomplishment but getting some wins under his belt should definitely help boost his confidence in his transition to the senior tour.

Served really well today ! Could have been better from the back of the court but still enough to win :)

Nice work! :yeah:

7pts in the bag, and that is worth a rise of 100-ish places if I recall correctly. Let's see what he can do against Torebko.

Every point will do nicely. The stats indicate a solid, relatively comfortable match. Oliver can take on Torebko without much pressure on his shoulders, especially if he continues to impress with that smooth serving of his.

Nice one, Oliver. Destroyed the mug, gained points and jumping in the rankings :yeah: Destroy Torebko now! He had no business beating Ward.

I was watching Ward-Torebko on live scoring and Torebko served 22 aces in the match. Considering that Torebko and Golding have served a combined total of 41 aces in the 1st round you'd expect the next match to have some big serving! Fingers crossed Oli will prevail...

Marrai is nothing special, this win means nothing.
Liam Broady is better than Silvering.

Good win for Oliver but i don,t see him winning in round 2! Liam Broady has done nothing since Wimbledon Juniors! sad but true!
