Models In Madrid

By Tennis Week
10/15/2004

The catwalk comes to the court in Madrid next week. Organizers of the Tennis Masters Series-Madrid have hired 25 models, ages 19 to 27, to serve as ball girls during next week's tournament.

The models have been receiving a crash course in tennis terminology and etiquette this week to prepare for the start of the tournament on Monday. Their presence may compel players to watch more than the balls.

"Before taking them on court to practice, we have shown them a bit about the sport, how you play, what a set is, what a game is and an ace," their coach Julio Nieto said. "They will add beauty, but we still have to work on a lot of details so everything works smoothly. The important thing is for them not to disrupt the rhythm of the game or distract the players."

There is no truth to the rumor ring card girls will display the score during changeovers.

The models are sponsored by designer Hugo Boss, which is also providing their clothes for the event.

I already said in the other thread that Matress Mac was behind this- Roddick is not participating, and with Andre there is no problem (Steffi has him on a tight leash  )- therefore it was meant to distract the other top contenders for TMC like Safin, Nalbandian, Canas etc. so that they will lose early and not have enough points to qualify for Houston.

Although, that's not the same thing. It's not like I go to wtaworld and call them sexist for checking her out. That would make my hypocritical. This? Doesn't. I don't know why people react to this so negatively, considering it's probably just a one time experiment. I think it's a comical idea.

If it would be common for ATP tournements, then I would find the idea sexist. I mean, as an analogy, asking a woman to cook and wash dishes one week isn't sexist; but if it's something you expect of your wife 365 days a year and that you're not ever willing to do, then that's another story.

IMO the worst thing about it is that it takes the opportunity away from little kids. Forgetting the sexist/distracting to the players aspects, what about the young kids who really relish opportunities like this. I've read lots of stories about players who got started as ballkids and stuff and they were really formative experiences. In that sense, it's too bad they won't have the opportunity.

I just have to say, that while I understand what you're getting at, this really isn't a very good analogy. Yes, it's just one tournament one week in the grand scheme of things, but for some kiddies it's the one tournamant a year that they have a chance at participating in. That's quite difference then having the wife cook one week. A marriage contract vs only letting women of a particular look and age group work in an area that is generally reserved for volunteers? Tsk.

It was a bad analogy (it was an attempt to show I don't really think the idea is sexist) and, yes, and it does suck for other kids.

This is ridiculous...and I say "what does they (the models) know about tennis?" The organizers should give a chance to kids!!!! 'cause a model will never become tennis player, but there are many ball kids that play tennis and they really want to become a great player and to be next to their favourite figure.

Chloe le Bopper

10-16-2004, 03:08 AM
Do you need to know something about tennis to run after balls?

I'm sure it's fun to be volunteer and all, but being a volunteer by definition a service you give, it's not a "chance" that some people must give you. I'm general I'm all for giving kids opportunities of course, but I don't see it as an obligation.

Anyone can see good tennis very close by watching practice courts or secondary courses, you don't need to be a ballboy. The first days aren't that expensive.

I agree with you, Rebecca.
This is the most pathetic piece of sexist crap I've ever seen. If they're doing this to get ratings and interest then they're stooping pretty low. How can they expect professionalism when these chicks don't know the first thing about tennis. It pisses me off enough when the kids screw up doing the job, at least they know more that these girls...it's going to look like a complete joke, not to mention takes a lot of opportunities away from the kids who usually do it.
And if they do have to lower themselves to the extent of using half-baked models, at least have some men too...as we all know, there are some players who are so inclined, so may as well give them a thrill too.

*sigh* Just when I thought Marat may be able to win this...now he'll never get past the first bloody round.

I personally think i's quite funny to do something xtraordianry for a change. And I certainly don't mind some models running around the court during top tennis. This should however be a one time exception.
To the non-tennis-fan, this gives a wrong signal, however. People who don't follow tennis regularly will get the impression tennis is in distress and the TP will do just about anything to get some attention. Which is a damn shame.

it's a ridiculous idea but i understand that when half the field disappears, a tournament director has to come up with something to sell tickets. i just hope Marat doesn't get too distracted by the nipple display. i wonder which US tourny will copy the idea? the WTA HAS to come up with something to sell tickets in LA bec attendance at their YEC tourny is embarassing.

i agree with Becca. Sharapova isn't all that. she's tall, blonde and skinny and so fits 3 of the standard requirements for modeling, but i've seen much prettier girls in the mall.

but is this just a reaction to the withdrawal of so many players? because they would have had to start training the chicks quite a long time in advance...and I'm sure the tournament organisers wouldn't have imagined quite this many players would pull out then...it had obviously be planned beforehand.

I guess I could understand this experiment better if it were ocurring at a smaller tournament. It seems odd to do it at a TMS tournament that has prestige and is meaninful to players.

Good ball kids do make a difference in a match. It isn't just running after a ball, it's getting the balls transfered to the correct end of the court efficiently and at the right time. Sometimes you will see a rookie team get confused about this and there are no balls at the end of the court where they are needed and it interrupts the play for a moment or two while the server is waiting for a ball. It's not a big deal, but ball kids have to pay attention. They aren't simply retrievers.

Not saying that models have the mentality of an 11 or 12 year old. Maybe they'll be able to handle the job just fine.

AND are they actually PAYING the models for this appearance? Because the ball kids get some clothes, food, and a chance for autographs and that's all. :(

Shows the sad state of the sport if they're gonna use this in hopes of what...attracting a bigger audience? I hate to think about all the ball kids getting the boot so these models can strut and bounce with the balls. :o

I don't like this idea because it make men's tennis look desperate for attention and that's not a good sign. Men's tennis is enjoyed on it's own merit. Silly gimmicks like using models as ball girls make men's tennis seem less legitimate and more like professional wrestling than men's tennis. I would expect something like this from The WTA Tour with chippendale dancers or something because the WTA Tour is desperate for attention! ;) I thought men's tennis was a healthy sport. Isn't it?

P.S. - I wonder if the in very good shape raven haired honey in the Boss cap in the third photo could be the feline TC in Mardid! :cat: :yeah: :hearts:

This is what Andre said  apparently during his match one of them was standing in the wrong place and he scolded her :haha:

Q. You've been known occasionally to choreograph the ball kids. How did it go with the models?
ANDRE AGASSI: It was difficult, to say the least, to concentrate on the ball. But I suppose I had an advantage. I'm used to playing with my wife (smiling).

Q. Was there anything that the perfectionist in you didn't like? Was that okay for you? Was it just a gimmick?
ANDRE AGASSI: I suppose I need some time to let it absorb. You know, I think it's important for our sport to understand its product clearly. And I'm not quite convinced it's part of our product.
But the skirts look like they're a little difficult to run in, too. I think they need to be shorter maybe.

Champagne, controversy for Madrid ball-girls

Updated: Sunday October 24, 2004 8:17PM

MADRID, Oct 24 (Reuters) -- A champagne-soaked celebration marked the end of a week of wolf-whistles, government complaints and media controversy for a troupe of models who made their debut as ball-girls at the Madrid Masters tournament.

The women, aged 19 to 28, were drafted in to collect stray balls and hand towels to players, while wearing split skirts and skimpy tops emblazoned with the name of a sponsor.

They replaced volunteer youngsters in all the televised matches and the players, far from being frustrated by occasional slip-ups, were generally in favour -- despite complaints from government and some fans that the move was sexist.

"Tennis is not in a great position right now," said tournament champion Marat Safin, who thanked the models on court when he picked up his trophy before soaking them with champagne.

"It seems like tennis players are not exciting for the spectators. The models mean people are still talking about tennis. Good publicity, bad publicity, it doesn't matter."

Soledad Murillo, a senior government official responsible for equality, protested that the decision undermined the spirit of the sport and asked organisers and sponsors to withdraw a project she condemned as sexist.

The tournament was hit by the withdrawals of the world's top three players and bringing in the models proved a media coup, winning coverage from London to Tokyo.

MIXED UP ON COURT

On-court results were mixed, even though the models were given two weeks' intensive training on the game's rules.

One confused model forgot which way to run as she collected a ball and had to be reminded by the umpire to return to her place beside the net. Others dropped balls or fumbled after them while players waited to start serving.

The models, some converted into ardent tennis fans after seven days on centre court, shrugged off the criticism.

"It the best job I've ever done," said Sara, 22. "It's been really exciting being involved with sport. And it is nice not having to wear heels.

"This is my work. Who is the minister to say I am being used as an object?"

Madrid Masters director Carlos Santana remained enthusiastic on the tournament's final day.

"For me it has been very positive from the start," he said. "I don't think it is sexist, and anyway there are already models working in many sports -- basketball, formula one, cycling."

But some of the fans remained unconvinced.

"It really is very sexist -- the kids wear polo shirts and the models come out in those skin-tight tops," said 18-year-old student Carolina Pastor. "It's not very respectful of women, and I don't think it is really the way to promote the game to us."
