PPS: Another thing that was interesting to me from Janko's interview, he said he can relate to how Kei feels because he has lost to Marin Cilic the first 5 times they played...and Kei leads the h2h against Marin!
However Kei's loss against Janko are all in 2011...and now Kei made it into the pigeon's thread :-(

Nice start for Kei to win his 1st round doubles match teaming with Ito.
T. Ito / K. Nishikori def. C. Kas / A. Peya - 4/6 6/4 10/4
Hi there, they played very well today. :)

Kei and Tatsuma played doubles together for the first time. I thought it would be a tall task for them to beat the two more experienced doubles payers. Indeed it was veterans teaching rookies lessons in the first set although Kei hit many flashy winners to delight the home fans. Sometimes I was scared he might injure himself because he was stretching forward, upward and sideways to hit backhand volley, diving volley, etc., from difficult positions!
Ito is taller than Kei and his serve is pretty goods.

The Japanese pair had more trouble holding their serve until midway into the second set, but then errors and DFs started creeping in Kas' and Peya's game, and Kei and Tatsuma broke at 5-4. After the first point in the match tie break, which the Japanese pair won, Peya tried to avoid Ito's shot that came towards his face, and the ball or his racket hit him in the eyes. He called trainer to have his eyes and forehead checked. The play soon reumed but the German and Austrian pair lost steam, and Kei and Tatsuma closed it out without much trouble. Hope Peya's injury was nothing serious.

I'll post the photos later. Today my camera ran out of batteries (and I forgot to buy new ones on the way home. :o)

I can't see tomorrow's match either but it will be televised so I will record it and watch it, hopefully without knowing the result!
Good luck, Kei!! :rocker2:

Just finished watching Kei vs Ferru on HDD.
Why does he always lose when I'm not watching? :(
Kei started the match brilliantly and led Ferru's first service game and led *3-2. before David broke back. There were many really scintillating rallies between these two phenomenal ball strikers, Kei more flashy and unpredictable and Ferru more solid and powerful.
In the first set they both had 11 winners. But Kei also made 11 UEs, while Ferru only made 4, and that made the difference.
In the second set Kei looked more ti!ed and nervous probably because the match was very tense, although it was Kei who had the first break point of the match.
He lost to the better player today but I think he's improving and he would have beaten many players with that form.
With a better draw I think he will have a much better result in Shanghai.

In the meantime, good luck in the doubles because I will go and watch tomorrow!

Thanks for reporting the matches bunny, enjoy the doubles. Still something for the fans to cheer for now that Ito lost in the singles.

I'd be surprise if there's a stream for the doubles tomorrow, I wish they had showed matches from day 1...

btw, what are the possibilities for Kei to finish the year with a career high ranking now that Tokyo is over?

*bunny*
10-05-2011, 03:13 PM
Kei will play Shanghai next week and he's also entered Vienna and Valencia as an alternate. I think he will play qualifying for Paris Bercy as well. He has only 80 points to defend by the end of the season so I think there's a plenty of chances for him to reach a career high ranking. :)

Ito played very really well today. There's no question he's the best server out of he current Japanese ATP players. His FH is big and he stand almost always close to the baseline his playing style is very aggressive.
But he had some problem in the elbow and called trainer after the first set. Hope it's not serious and he can play doubles with Kei tomorrow!

*bunny*
10-06-2011, 04:16 PM
Kei and Tatsuma lost to the Murray brothers. 6-3 6-4

Kei's serve was the most vulnerable of the four. So it was his serve that got broken in the first set. Both Kei and Tatsuma played well here and there, but Andy and Jamie have big serves that can help them out of trouble. In the second set, the Japanese pair's form dropped and they went two breaks down and it looked as if they might lose 1-6. But then they piclked up their level and broke back as Jamie served for the match and then held their serve. That was the end of the road for them though because Andy served four bombs to end the match.

Good luck to Kei in Shanghai!

Kei is supposed to play the second match on Grand Stand.
Rain is forecast in Shanghai today, and I reckon there's no roof except for the Stadium. The first match on Grand Stand, Tomic vs Dolgo, has already staretd and Tomic has taken the first set.
Hope it won't rain till Kei's match ends!
But apparently Berdych, who was scheduled to pley Feli Lopez in the Stadium, has withdrawn, so they may move one of the Grand Stand matches there should it rain.

Grand Stand:
Matches start at 12:30 p.m.
Bernard TOMIC (AUS) vs Alexandr DOLGOPOLOV (UKR)
Santiago GIRALDO (COL) vs Kei NISHIKORI (JPN)Gilles SIMON (FRA) vs Matthew EBDEN (AUS)

Looks like matches on Grand Stand are played at some indoor court without spectators or broadcast. They do that in Tokyo too when it rains a lot and have to cancel matches on outside courts for two days or more. But what a shame! :(

Dolgopolov vs Tomic match is now over. Alex winning in 3 sets (5-7, 6-1, 6-0)...wonder what happened to Bernard after the first set.

So if no rain delay, Kei's match will soon to start :D, good luck!

Btw, TennisTalk already predicted that Giraldo will win in 3, let's see, their completely wrong against Tsonga anyway

What a match!!!!! Kei is really awesome, congratulation :bounce:. Quarter final in Master is extremely great, he will be in top 40 next week and become the first Japanese ATP player who take this position :bounce:

One thing i feel worried is his health. Kei just passed three tense 3-set matches, and also have a litle injury. Hopefully everything will be ok :).

10.13 Kei Nishikori
PublishTime:2011-10-13 19:44:55

13 October 2011 K. NISHIKORI / S. Giraldo (7 6, 4 6, 6 3)

An interview with: KEI NISHIKORI

Q. It's the first time you make the quarterfinals in an ATP 1000 tournament. What makes you get this breakthrough?

KEI NISHIKORI: To get a quarterfinal?

Q. Yes.

KEI NISHIKORI: It is really special for me. It's only few times playing Masters, so it really means a lot to me, this win.

To beat Jo the other day, it means a lot to me to beat a top 10 player. Played a tough match again today. I'm really happy, you know, to get a quarterfinal here.

Q. Many people think Asian men are not strong enough to survive on the top of men's tennis, but you did well. Can you tell us how tough was it to compete with the usually taller and stronger players than you, especially the powerful player like Tsonga?

KEI NISHIKORI: Yes, it is always tough to play against them 'cause I used to very short. Even now I'm not the biggest guy on the tour. It's always tough to play against them.

But I think I have more speed than them. I can, you know, change up with pace. I can do different things against them. It is not easy to play with big guys, but I'm getting used to it and I'm getting confident. Now it's not big problem for me.

Q. As an Asian player, could you give suggestion or advice to our Chinese young men players?

KEI NISHIKORI: I played Davis Cup a few years ago against China. I know Wu Di and Ma (phonetic). When you see them practice, I always surprise how they play and I think they are good enough to play on tour. I guess I never see them in a match.

I guess if they know how to win the match, get more experience, they could be top hundred soon I think. So I guess they needs more experience.

Q. All three wins you got this week were in three sets. You always come back. Shows you're a mentally very strong player. Are you naturally born that way, a strong boy, or is that the way Japanese people are?

KEI NISHIKORI: I don't know, it's just me I guess. Honestly, I want to win in two sets but, I don't know, I always losing first set and I always come back. It's something I have to change, otherwise I can't win the tournament because I'm losing a lot of energies.

I have to change this. But it's always been like this, you know, to come back.

Q. We know you were troubled by some injuries a couple years ago. The match against Tsonga you also asked for several medical timeouts. Do you think physical fitness is the biggest obstacle for Asian players to play at this level?

KEI NISHIKORI: Yes, it is different body, Asians and other country. I mean, I had an injury my elbow, had surgery. No tennis for one year. I had a really tough time there.

I know I have to play without injury. That's my goal: to be playing with no injuries. Like now I can get to quarterfinal. I'm hurting, but not the big one. If I can stay healthy, I think I can get more ranking better.

Q. So you found a solution about how to play without injury?

KEI NISHIKORI: I mean, I was hurting, but it's not like I can't walk. I was hurting, but in the match I'm into the match so I don't really feel the pain. I mean, still it was bothering me today. But I won today. I think I have to handle these injuries all the time.

Q. It was just mentioned you will get your best ranking for Japanese players. What is your goal in your career in ranking, top 10 or top 20?

KEI NISHIKORI: I want to be No. 1 in whole career. That's my goal. I think there is a lot of things I have to do. But for now, this year, I want to get top 30 if I can. Yeah, top 30 is my next goal.

Q. Japanese football is getting better and better because you have a training program when people are young. Does Japan have a similar training program for young tennis players? Are you a product of that, if there is?

KEI NISHIKORI: I think they have, but I live in U.S. more. I moved when I was 13. I trained more in U.S., so I don't really know how they working. But, yeah, if you see the Japanese soccer team, they getting better. A lot of young guys are coming.

Yeah, I guess the training program is better now.

Q. You mentioned the injury you had a few years ago. When I talked to a Japanese journalist at the US Open, she said you are obviously a very talented player, but the injury you had let you miss a golden time in your career. You are already 21 or 22. When you were 19, you showed a lot of talent. Even Rafael Nadal said you could be a top 10 player one day.

KEI NISHIKORI: Yeah, it's always my goal to get a strong body. Especially end of this year I'm going to a new place to train myself, see a new trainer. That's always my goal: to get a good body, no injuries. I can get a better ranking than now. I really think I can do it.

--------------------------------------------------------------
So he was hurting. Hope it will get better tomorrow!
Both Kei and Dolgo are creative players who have a lot of variety in their games. So it should be a very interesting match if they can play to their potential. :)

Nishikori To Break Japanese Rankings Record
Shanghai, China

by ATP Staff
13.10.2011

Kei Nishikori will become Japan's highest-ever ranked male player on Monday after the 21 year old reached the last eight in Shanghai following a hard-fought 7-6(6), 4-6, 6-3 win over Santiago Giraldo of Colombia. Nishikori is currently No. 47 in the South African Airways 2011 ATP Rankings, but is now certain to break Shuzo Matsuoka's mark of World No. 46 on 6 July 1992.

DEUCE Flashback: Project 45 No Longer A Secret (November 2008)

"Shuzo Matsuoka has been a great mentor and teacher for me," said Nishikori. "It is an honour to be able to break his record and become the number one tennis player in Japan."

His victory over Giraldo puts Nishikori into the quarter-finals of an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 event for the first time.

"It is really special for me [reaching the quarter-finals]. It's only few times playing Masters, so it really means a lot to me, this win," Nishikori said. "To beat Jo[-Wilfried Tsonga] the other day, it means a lot to me to beat a Top 10 player. [I] played a tough match again today. I'm really happy."

10.14 Kei NishikoriPublishTime:2011-10-15 00:20:26
14 October 2011 K. NISHIKORI / A. Dolgopolov (6 4, 6 3)

An interview with: KEI NISHIKORI

Q. Kei, an important milestone in your career, to reach your first semifinal. Is it extra special to do it in Asia?

KEI NISHIKORI: It is, for sure. I feel, you know, like home here. It means a lot, you know, to play semis here. Even first quarterfinals, semis, I'm really excited now.

Q. Today maybe your easiest win of the week. Can you explain why?

KEI NISHIKORI: Well, I know I have to win in two sets sometimes. It's always been to win three sets all this week. Even Kuala Lumpur I was playing all the time three sets.

But I think I started well today. I knew he's going to hit a lot of slice and I have to be careful. I was trying to be, you know, not going for too much, just try to steady on the court, and that works.

I guess, yeah, I won in two set today.

Q. Can you talk a little bit about what this year has meant to you overall. Obviously you're having your best season, reaching the top ranking for a Japanese player.

KEI NISHIKORI: Yeah, it is great year for me, this year. I get to high highest ranking. To be No. 1 player in Japan, it means a lot to me.

I had a shoulder injury in September, one month. It's always, you know, I have to fight with injuries. But now it's semis here, one of biggest tournaments going on for me here. It's been, yeah, really great year for me.

Q. I overheard that your mother is a little bit worry about your possible next round opponent, Andy Murray. Do you share the same feeling? And if you have any tactic?

KEI NISHIKORI: I mean, they haven't play yet, so I can't say anything. You know, Andy is winning two tournaments in a row, and beating Nadal. You know, it's going to be tough.

I never play him, so I don't know. But I'm going to ask my coach, Brad. He knows a lot of things, I guess.

But, you know, Andy is having great week here, so is going to be tough match both guys.

Q. Is there anything serious with your ankle injury?

KEI NISHIKORI: No, I twisted little bit. Took two, three games to come back. But now it's recovering. So I think it's fine.

Q. I heard you were a roommate of the son of Brad Gilbert. Now Gilbert is your coach. Could you say something about him.

KEI NISHIKORI: Yeah, when I was in academy, when I was 15, 16, I was roommate with his son. Now he's coaching me. It is helping me a lot. He knows a lot of players. He teach me, you know, how top players play, how I need to play. So it is helping me a lot I think.

Q. I remember when you cracked the top 100 in 2008, you became suddenly a big star in Japan. Are you still a star in Japan?

KEI NISHIKORI: I think so. I hope so. It is special feeling when I go back to Japan. The people sometimes realize me when I walk in the street. But it is something special. Usually you don't get the feeling.

Yeah, I really enjoying how the life is going on.

Q. But are you still a star in Japan?

KEI NISHIKORI: I don't know. Don't ask me. Ask, I don't know, media or something. Sorry.

Q. Do you think for Asian players, if you want to be a top player, training in Europe or America is the only way?

KEI NISHIKORI: I don't think so. But for me it is helping me that I was in U.S. when I was little, playing with all the different players. There is a lot of power players, a lot of different type of the players. So I think that helps me to learn how to win against them.

You know, I want to go to Europe sometimes to train, but I haven't try yet. But I'm thinking to going Europe sometimes.

Q. Can you give us an idea of the status of tennis in Japan. How popular is the game compared to other sports in Japan?

KEI NISHIKORI: Yeah, I think baseball and soccer is one of biggest sports in Japan. But I think tennis is getting better in these two, three years. A lot of kids playing, start playing. Me and Kimiko Date came back. Tennis is getting more popular now.

I think a lot of kids start playing. So tennis is getting popular in Japan.

Q. You seemed today to be very comfortable at the net. Is that something that Brad perhaps has told you to be a little bit more aggressive, bring a little bit more variety into your game?

KEI NISHIKORI: Yes, he told me not going for the net, but he told me use my forehand and go to more aggressive. He was, you know, telling me, when we started, to more steady on the court, you know, good defense, but same time I have to go aggressive and give more pressure.

Yeah, he told me that.

Q. When Brad coached Andy Murray, he often alluded to his time with Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick and used to say to Murray, You should do that like Agassi used to, or, You should do that like Roddick used to. Does he ever say to you, You should do that like Murray?

KEI NISHIKORI: I don't think so, no.

Q. It's been a good year for Asian tennis, Li Na and now you. Do you feel that sense of responsibility as well, that you're flying the flag for East Asia?

KEI NISHIKORI: I'm not sure. Yeah, I know Li Na won the first title, first Asian to win a Grand Slam. It is really excited news. You know, it's good to see the Asian playing well, a lot of Asian coming now for boys, Tomic. I think they are getting stronger.

Q. If you do meet Andy in the semifinals, talk to us a little bit about what his best strengths are and how you might find a way to beat him.

KEI NISHIKORI: He never miss. That his best things. He had a big serve. I played doubles last week. He was hitting ace, ace, ace. So I have to be careful his serve.

But I think, you know, I have nothing to lose. Only thing I have to do is I have to go aggressive and give him lot of pressure. But, yeah, I'm playing well this week. I'm getting a lot of confidence. If I can play my best tennis, I think I will have some chance to win.

Q. Is there anything written on your headband?

KEI NISHIKORI: No. Uniqlo, that's my sponsor. That's the mark.

(By "mark" I think he means "logo." :))

Whatever happens tonight Kei (and his supporters) has nothing to lose, so I'm just going to enjoy this match.

Already 11pm here, hopefully I can sleep well after this, but I'm quite happy either way. good luck Kei
