Pablo adds a good player to the event, but I hope he loses early, since he's ranked around 50. He winning this event would be a disaster. Di Mauro can grind the hell out of Pablo but he should win that match. But Giannessi is good enough to test and potentially win that match.

Pippo has a good draw for two rounds, then probably Klizan. Lost to the Slovak not long ago but hopefully he wins this time should they play.

Pashanski v Berlocq and Zeballos v Junqueira are tough matches in the bottom section. I hope Zeba makes it from that section, but I fear Chucky will be too solid for him. I think the winner of Pashanski v Berlocq will make the SF.

The third quarter is the toughest. I thought Golubev was a darkhorse at this event, but he ain't beating Mayer in the form he's in. If Leo picks up where he left off, I think he makes the SF and is the favorite to win the event, but his pathway is tough on paper.

Bozo tanked. Knowing him, he probably didn't want to be there and decided to pretty much quit from the first ball.

Based on the way Pippo has played today, Klizan has a great shot at making at least the SF here.

Oh really? Damn, usually (for him) he's clean in the Italian events

Do you know if that was something in the match, or just Zeballos doesn't like Pashanski because of past comments? I only watched from the start of the second set, but there didn't seem to be a problem during the match....

Anyway, irrespective of Pashanski's unpleasant comments a few years ago, that was a pretty high quality match for a first round challenger event. Pashanski probably should have won it with a 5-2 lead in the final set, but Zeballos played some really good stuff late on. I've seen worse quality tour level matches than that this season. Well played both.

Di Pusho actually played a good match today, I give him credit. He stepped up and took a lot of shots early and he grinded really well and forced errors. Pablo is clearly the better player, but he couldn't put together his combinations without errors consistently enough.

This is a great result for Fred Gil so I'm happy with it.

now Filo V. you finally have an answer about why they scheduled Volandri on a lateral court
they probably knew he was not in good shape...
BTW i find really ridicolous to retire on 6-0 4-1
it shows a really low level of sportmanship and respect toward your opponent
you don't let him have the satisfaction to complete the match and get yourself mental excuses...
if you're able to play until then, it's not good to retire when there are only a couple of games left

Filo V.

That moral debate about retiring and not retiring is pretty useless to me. If a player is injured, they shouldn't keep themselves out there, knowing they will lose and potentially making the injury worse. Ultimately the guys should look out for themselves first and foremost.

Fleck

Filo V.
09-09-2011, 02:49 PM
Because Machado played an extremely physical, tough match and has to come back much less than 24 hours later to play here.

Also because Leo just destroyed Machado a few weeks ago.

Filo V.

Klizan and probably also Naso have potential to beat Gil in the semis. There is no doubt about this. Hopefully Klizan will take advantage of his favorable draw. Linzer, Nielsen, Naso and Gil... That´s a really acceptable draw to make at least a final here. But still a lot of work left for Klizan. He needs it desperately and has a confidence to make it.

Filo V.
09-09-2011, 03:43 PM
Klizan definitely is the favorite for the top half. It seems he's consistently making at least QF/SF in all of these last events he's played. Becoming a very good challenger player.

Filo V.

Klizan 7-6! Hmmm, he made 11 more points than Naso in this set. So, this set shouldn´t even go to tiebreak. Naso had a 5-2 lead after 5 consecutive games and also had a setpoint, however he didn´t deserve to win that set. Quality of tennis was quite good except of Naso´s tiebreak where he was completely off air. Klizan hit some nice forehands and he was more creative player. Bad thing is the length of the match and that Martin Klizan possibly could be tired for potential tomorrow´s match against Gil. Hopefully he will close the match in the second set.

Solid performance by Klizan. Except of that 5 straight games in the 1st set, he was really consistent. 1st serve percentage by Klizan was poor as usually, but he showed good game from the baseline once again and also some solid movement. This should be enough also against Gil, but possible final against Zeba/Leo Mayer is of course another story... That would be really tough, but not impossible to win. Klizan should be a good leader for Slovakia in upcoming Davis cup match against Ukraine(Stachovskij, Marchenko, Bubka) which will be also played on the clay.

Mayer def. Zeballos 7-5 6-1

The title is almost definitely his. The baseline hitting is simply on a different level than the other players at the event.

Awful tiebreaker from Klizan but a good one for Fred. Klizan making too many errors overall.

7-6(3) Gil

Fred's game looks shaky and unconfident, but Klizan is making tons of errors and I think yesterday's hard match took a lot out of him.

Very sad, unfortunate and horrible from Fred Gil. This was his match and he really blew it. These are the types of losses that can haunt players. Hopefully it won't cost him a top 100 spot at the end of the year.

The only positive in this result is that Leo should win the title now.

Did anyone watch the doubles?

Finally a really good match by Brown/Zeballos against Kerr/Parrott, 6-2 7-5, Brown already had 6-2 5-4 40-15 on his serve.

Well, Gil had no business losing yesterday and choked. So this match will probably be uncompetitive, which is a shame. An ill Klizan coming off two very physical, long matches. Can't see Leo losing more than 8 games.

Klizan had some stomach problems yesterday, because of lack of food. He didn´t eat because of night´s match vs. Naso, then he wanted to eat something but everything was closed and he didn´t have a possibility to buy something.
Then he got some vitamins and recovered. After the match vs. Gil, he told that he is absolutely OK physically and has real confidence. He focuses on defending points till the end of the year, he has still cca. 100 points to defend. He told that Mayer is a little bit shaky sometimes but he respects him. They didn´t play against each other before, but they had training match two months ago. Mayer won 7-6 in that training match vs. Klizan... Klizan wants to hold top 100 spot that he could play immediately on Australian open. In case to play qualifiyng tournament there, Klizan told that he wouldn´t go there.

I really want to know reason, why Klizan wouldnt go on qualification for AO, if he would be on 105. place for example...
That is really stupid attitude to tennis at all... I know expenses are higher on tournament in Australia, but he cant be so poor, that he wont go there, if he would be first seed in qualification...

I guess Klizan is not so confident on the hardcourts and that´s the reason. Maybe he considers challengers as a better possibility for him to play instead and doesn´t believe he has a serious chance to qualify in Australia. Maybe he doesn´t like it that much in Australia... Who knows... It´s clear that he is becoming clean clay court specialist although we know that he had some successes also on the hardcourts. But I don´t know to be honest, I´m just guessing.

I hope he want to be more complex player than just clay player. He still must improve his mental side and be more successfull on other surfaces. He is very self-confident, so I cant see any problem, to be good on hardcourt too. I hope in next year, he will show some quality tennis also on hardcourt...

Personally, I don't think Klizan will ever be particularly good off clay. He reminds me of Rosol in some ways. The way he plays suits clay much more.

He probably doesn't want to go to AO qualifying because of travel, and because he feels challengers would be a more beneficial route for him. To get to the top 100 and not have to think about qualifying at all.

to be fair to klizan he plays the way tennis should be played, attacks all the time

his forehand isnt realiable though, it tends to breakdown too much under pressure, he isnt particualry a good returner either.

okish serve.

Filo V.
09-11-2011, 03:29 PM
Klizan has a good first serve, but it's his second serve that is weak.

Overall, he's a good clay courter, he can be a back-end top 100 player for a while, and a mid-top 100 player with more improvements. He is still newly-turned 22 years old so time is on his side.

mattpro
09-11-2011, 03:51 PM
Sure, he is young, so time is on his side. I also think he will never be in TOP 20, but coz it is Slovak, maybe place around 50 will be possible in some time.
Our Karol Beck isnt also anyone excelent, ,but he was almost in TOP 30, so I hope, Klizan will be similar player to Karol :)
Firehand is good, backhhand is better than it was a year ago, he needs to improve the percentage of first serve and of course second serve...
And I dont think he has problems with returns, he broke lot of service games during last 20 matches, so it is also better :)

Klizan was talking about it. He knew that Mayer can be very shaky and that he can make a ton of easy errors. This set was pretty much gifted to Klizan, Mayer was horrible, Klizan was just bringing the ball over the net and it was enough. Mayer will be probably better from the second set, because it´s not possible to play worse than this. No matter how, Klizan just really needs these 45 points which are in play today!

I'm so disappointed in Leo. I'm shocked. This was his tournament and to play like this in a final as the more experienced opponent is embarrassing. He would have been so close to the top 100 with a victory here. I thought at least one of my favorites would win but out of three in the SF, none of them do. Just very disappointing.

He need to defend 60 points till the end of year, to keep in TOP 100 for Australia Open, That could be easy for him in this form

Klizan was very very solid, good movement good length of strokes, variable play. He was not excellent but he was definitely good. Deserved title. He also deserved the victory against Gil who was only waiting for Klizan´s errors which was simply not enough at the end. When Klizan is playing his game then players like Gil have only a very little chances. Mayer is absolutely different type, but today he was off. Positive thing is that Klizan is also a very good athlete, he was moving very well after some tough matches. He should be a force in upcoming Davis cup match against Ukraine and he should definitely beat both - Stakhovsky and Marchenko/Bubka on the clay. I expect Klizan to make some damage on ATP level clay tournaments next year. His biggest problem (head) seems to be solved for now. Congrats to Martin and his coach Karol Kucera! They did a fantastic job in last months.
