Tennys (yes, it is pronounced Tennis) Sandgren is a young, rising 20 year old American star.

His name is too awesome for words, and fits perfectly. Tennys won a Future last week, and is in prime position to win another one this week.

I'd love to see this kid get to the big time, what say you?

08-03-2011, 11:53 PM
Tennys wins.

This kid will be good for Tenn...is.

Tennys won another Future this week

Will play the Binghamton CH next week.

20 year old and still nobody knows him. Promising.

Can't do it. He comes from that hellhole on Rocky Top. He will be turning pro I believe, he had considered returning to play for the Tennessee Vols. I saw him once in person. Very wristy shots. At least he's better that Rhyne(Whine) Williams, the other Vol.

Also JP Smith who has been killing it in the futures. The former Vols are making moves, unfortunately because they are my least favorite team in college tennis.

Better get used to them as these guys should be around a while as part of the next generation of American players on the level of Reynolds, Kendrick, Witten, etc.

His surname sounds very swedish, thought it was a swedish talent I missed out on (hope it's not too distant, this guy needs to be converted for DC) His first name.......sounds very awesome!

08-07-2011, 09:48 PM
It's not confirmed that he will go pro yet actually. But he likely will due too some good results lately and the fact that Tennessee will not be very good next year and his return will not be that beneficial to him

Clemson and Tennessee rivalry, eh?

Blond hair, blue eyes, he surely has some Swedish lineage.

I will become a fan when he is into the pro tour though. I wasn't the biggest Farah fan in college but once these guys hit the pro I support them all, repping college tennis.

08-07-2011, 10:20 PM
He is already a lock for Us Open qualies wildcard but I think if he goes deep in Binghamton he could get and MD WC

I doubt it. They are already giving one to Johnson and the Kalamazoo winner. They probably don't want to give so many to low ranked players

I remember this guy since his junior level. It's tough to miss a guy whose name is Tennys

I don't follow College Tennis so I have never heard of him. But that is a great name :)

Tennys Sandgren wins tennis match at USTA Pro Circuit (http://www.brownsvilleherald.com/sports/tennis-137261-tennys-sandgren.html)

His name is Tennys, and he plays tennis.

Thursday at the Brownsville USTA Pro Circuit Tennis Tournament at Brownsville Tennis Center, Tennys Sandgren won a tennis match, as he upset sixth-seeded Dimitar Kutrovsky 7-6(4), 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals.

Heíll try for another upset today, as he draws fourth-seed Daniel Cox for the right to go to the semifinals.

There, Tennys, and yes thatís his real name, will have a chance to play more Ö sigh, tennis. And donít think he hasnít heard it all before.

"Certainly I get a lot of interesting comments," Sandgren said. "None negative, just interesting."

Sandgren got the unusual, but fitting, first name from his Swedish great grandfather. It had no relation to the sport, and when his parents decided to bring back the name and give it to their son, they werenít really thinking about the sport either.

But they did play it, and they did have a court in their backyard. So, it became a family thing to do, and sure enough, Sandgren wound up being pretty good.

The Tennessee native stayed in his home state and played college tennis at Tennessee, but last summer, he won two different Pro Circuit tournaments in Illinois. With those wins and with what he did in college, the 20-year-old decided it was the right time to turn pro and go at this full-time.

"I had good results over the summer," Sandgren said. "It was just a matter of when I was ready."

Based on how he handled Kutrovsky, it looks like Sandgren made the right call.

"Heís ranked higher than I am, so itís always nice to beat someone who had some of the wins heís had," Sandgren said.

In the match, Sandgren and Kutrovsky kept taking shots at each in the first set before Sandgren powered through in the tiebreaker.

The second set featured clean tennis until Sandgren broke Kutrovsky twice to take a 5-2 lead. He let up in the ensuing game and was re-broken, then lost on the fourth deuce to make it 5-4.

But after changing his shirt and taking a quick breather, he won four points in a row and ran away with the match.

"Just about trying to win each point," Sandgren said. "There was not a lot of serving plays because the serve was taken out of it with the wind."

Things didnít stop there for Sandgren on Thursday, as he and his doubles partner Rhyne Williams beat Vahid Mirzadeh and Michael Shabaz 6-1, 7-6(0) to advance to the final.

Heíll have that, and of course, another singles match or two.

"Thatís how it is, itís a grind, for sure," Sandgren said. "It should be a really tough one (today)."

From Tennisfutures.net (http://www.tennisfutures.net/interview-with-champion-tennys-sandgren/)

Second seed Tennys Sandgren lived up to his expectations. The 20 year old former Tennessee Volunteer won the USTA Pro Circuit Menís Futures Tournament at Harbor Island Athletic Club beating Bjorn Fratangelo in the final.

RP: Seeded at 2, what were your expectations coming into the tournament?

TS: I felt like I have been playing very well and my expectations were to come in and do my best. My only concern was fatigue and how my body would hold up. I just took it one game at a time.

RP: Is this your first time at the Harbour Island Athletic Club?

TS: Yea, this is my first time here I really like the environment and setting.

RP: Harbour Island Athletic Club is a clay court venue, what is your court preference?

TS: I actually enjoy playing on clay. Before school I loved clay. Then while at school I played on hard courts for so long I just got used to them. I like to slide a lot, on hard or clay, so as long as the clay on the court isnít a thin layer I am

RP: How would you list your strengths as a player?

TS: My movement. I play really disciplined. I try not over playing and try to get my forehand in good situations.

RP: Being successful at the Futures level, what itís going to take to move to the next level?

TS: I think itís just going to take playing a lot in Challengerís tournaments and being up to the competition.

RP: You turned pro last August, and you just won here at Harbour Island, whatís next for you?

TS: I have a week free, then Iím off to California for two 15,000s and then thereís a series of four challengers here in Florida.

05-22-2012, 01:56 AM
He should be top-300 next week. He's not far away from getting into Grand Slam qualies.

Lost in a third set tiebreaker after having 2 match points. Pretty costly loss if you look at the draw.

06-15-2012, 11:10 PM
Lost another 3 setter that he never should have.

06-16-2012, 01:53 PM

06-18-2012, 03:12 PM
Into the semi, will play JP Smith again. Seems like the same group of players every week.

And they all just left the University of Tennessee last year.

How UT didn't win the NCAAs in 2011 is beyond me. Well, they choked against UGA. That's what happened. But they should have won the whole thing outright. Sandgren was playing #3 for them. Williams #2, and Smith #1.

All three are in the top 300 now. And Smith is like 150 in doubles.

06-18-2012, 09:18 PM
^ definitely a big loss for UT, best players gone all at once.

07-02-2012, 10:40 PM
Rough draw for Sandgren getting Benjamin Becker in the first round. Would be HUGE, though, if he could pull out a W.

07-04-2012, 03:12 AM

Dec. 14, 2012

NORCROSS, Ga. -- Only four players remained in the field after the first day of the USTA Australian Open Wild Card Playoffs.

Two of them are former Volunteers.

Playing on adjoining courts, Tennessee All-Americans Rhyne Williams and Tennys Sandgren finished within minutes of each other in their straight set quarterfinal wins to start the tournament Friday at Life Sport Tennis.

Williams defeated former UCLA All-American Daniel Kosakowski 6-1, 6-4, while Sandgren beat All-American Stanford star Bradley Klahn 6-3, 6-3.

In Saturday's semifinals, Williams will take on second-seeded Denis Kudla and Sandgren goes against top-seeded Tim Smyczek, the finalist at this year's Knoxville Challenger.

The winner of the three-day event earns the USTA's wild card into the main draw of the Australian Open and will be guaranteed at least $27,000 in prize money.

This week's tournament is nothing new to Williams, the 2011 NCAA singles semifinalist for the Vols. He has played this event the last two seasons, but this week brings a different perspective.

In past years, the eight-player draw has been stocked with grizzled veterans of the pro circuit trying to come back from injury and looking for a jump start into the first Grand Slam of the year. This time, the field is full of young up-and-coming players, five of whom played college tennis. Top-seeded Smycek is the "old man" of the group at 25 years old.

Instead of being one of the final players accepted into the draw and earning the first-day upsets as he has in the past, the Williams is seeded third and has the opportunity to play in the main draw of his second career Grand Slam event.

"The previous years, I had no expectations," said Williams, who is now No. 190 in the world rankings. "I was the underdog and I could swing away and really had no pressure. Not that I feel pressure this year. It's just that I'm one of the top three seeds. I'm happy to get the first win, and hopefully I can keep it going."

Williams experienced little trouble in his opening match. He said he was nervous to start, but once he held serve in the first game, he quickly took control against Kosakowski and jumped out to a 5-0 lead.

"Things always tighten up in the second set," Williams said. "Whether you like it or not, it's going to happen with these guys. Everyone's good. You've got to have close games and close sets."

Making his debut at the USTA's annual December event, Sandgren fought through a 15-minute service game against Klahn at 2-3 in the first set. Once he held serve, he immediately broke the former Stanford star and raced out to take the first set 6-3.

"That made me relax," Sandgren said. "That would have been a tough to lose a tight game on your serve like that. It would have been easy to go downhill fast."

Sandgren controlled the second set to move on to the semifinals.

Having grown up playing tennis with everyone in the field and training in Florida with others, there are no strangers across the net at this point for either Sandgren or Williams as the two find themselves just a pair of wins away from the main draw Down Under.

"It helps to have familiar people in your same shoes, but it's not fun to play each other though," Sandgren said. "It's kind of hard. Everyone here is friends, and that makes it difficult. You'd rather play somebody you didn't like.

"There's a good opportunity for all of us here two get a wild card, so we'll definitely put it aside and get after it."

Well I guess no more matching outfit with Williams :awww:

Tennys Sandgren
Age 21 (22 July 1991)
Birthplace: Gallatin, TN
Residence: Boca Raton, FL
Height: 6' 2"
Weight: 195 lbs
Plays: Right handed
Turned Pro: 2011
Coach: Theron Cole

You could say Tennys Sandgren was born into the sport of tennis. His Father played professionally on the Satellite tour and his Mom was a serious league player. Tennys and his brother were introduced at a very young age and never looked back.

A top junior through the age groups, Tennys entered the University of Tennessee the top junior recruit in the nation, ranked #9 ITF. Tennys was an ITA All American in 2011 and reached the NCAA singles semi-final.

When asked about a pro career Tennys responded, ďI first thought that I could make a career in tennis after I won back to back Futures Titles in July of 2011. Winning a Future used to seem impossible, but after I won two of them I felt that making a living playing tennis was an obtainable goal. It is important to always keep trying to improve. You never just stay the same. You are either going forward or backwardsĒ.

Since turning pro Tennys has quickly risen up the rankings to 241 in the world. He made it to the 3rd round qualifying at the U.S. Open and has captured 4 singles Futures titles and two Challenger quarter finals. He has also finaled and won two Challenger doubles events with collegiate partner Rhyne Williams.

ďI think ADNA best represents my competitive nature. The clothing business and the tour are incredibly tough and you have to work like an animal and grind every day.Ē

Our Athletic DNA family is once again pumped to announce the addition of professional tennis player Tennys Sandgren (yes, his name is pronounced tennis) as the newest Pro Ambassador of the ADNA brand.

Itís pretty clear, with a name like this, that he was BORN FOR THIS!

Tennys originates from Gallatin, Tennessee, and was rated the No. 1 recruit in 2010. Tennys has competed in junior events at the U.S. Open, Wimbledon and the French Open Ö achieving a top 1,000 ATP ranking.

Our team had the chance to talk with Tennys about his career, what drew him to the ADNA line, and why heís excited to rep for Athletic DNA. Take a look, and remember to follow and support all of our pros on Facebook & Twitter!

Tell us about how you came to play tennis?

Well tennis runs in the family. My dad played professionally on the satellite tour back in the day. My mom picked the game up when she was in her early thirties, and became a serious league player. My brother and I were introduced to the sport at an early age, through our parents, and we really just fell in love with it.

Talk about your first major win. How did it feel? Was there a crowd?

My first major win was against Benjamin Becker. He was the one seed at the Winetka Challenger, and fresh off a great performance at Wimbledon. I knew going into the match that my chances to win were slim, but that I definitely had a shot. I remember being ecstatic after I won. That match really gave me the confidence that I could compete with anyone out there, and has been a big step in my development path.

When did you decide that tennis was the career path you wanted to follow?

I first thought that I could make a career in tennis after I won back-to-back Futures Titles in July of 2011. Winning a Future used to seem impossible, but after I won two of them I felt that making a living playing tennis was an obtainable goal.

Did you have any handicaps or hardships to overcome in order to succeed?

I have been blessed to not have any handicaps to overcome, but I donít think anyone can be successful in anything without overcoming a few hardships or roadblocks. I have had amazing parents, and a family who loves me and support me through any difficulties I may go through.

How do you mentally prepare for each match?

I try and just relax as much as possible. I like to listen to house and trance music to just keep stress away from my mind.

Tennys SandgrenHow important is practicing tennis verses just playing matches?

It is always very important to practice even if you are playing a ton of matches. It is important to always keep trying to improve; never settle for just staying the same. You are either going forward or backwards.

How did you hear about Athletic DNA?

I heard about ADNA as a junior when they first started to gain popularity. I loved how they sponsored juniors to help grow the brand.

What drew you to become a Pro for the ADNA brand?

I like the idea that we are both fairly new on the scene and that we have an opportunity to grow together. It is appealing to me to get in on the groundwork of something. It gives me the opportunity to be a part of something early that has the potential to become great.

What part of your personality do you think ADNA best represents?

I think ADNA best represents my competitive nature. This is a very tough business to get into, and I admire that ADNA has their foot firmly in the door. Likewise, going on tour is extremely tough and you have to be very competitive to grind away week-in-and-week-out.

What are your thoughts on wearing the Athletic DNA clothing while you play?

I am looking forward to playing in ADNA gear. I think that their designs are some of the best stuff on the market, and I like to think that being an athlete is in my DNA.

Sandgren Prevails at JSM Illinois Challenger

After a three year absence, the trophy at the University of Illinois JSM Champaign Challenger returned to a player with college roots.

Sandgren claimed his first Challenger Singles title
courtesy, Tennis Sandgren Facebook Page
After former Illini Amer Delic took the title at this Challenger in 2006, the event continued to go to past college players as it was won by Jesse Levine (Florida), Kevin Anderson (Illinois) and Michael Russell (Miami) from 2007 to 2009, respectively.

The landscape changed in 2010 with a win by Alex Bogomolov and then Alex Kuznetsov. Last year's winner, Tim Smyczek, had also decided to forego college, though he had quite a successful year after the win.

Former Tennessee Volunteer Tennys Sandgren changed the pattern with a win in this year's event that followed the elimination of three top seeds.

It seemed like nothing was easy in this end-of-season tournament as seeds fell and matches ran long. Fatigue was definitely in the air.

After Eric Crepaldi of Italy took out top-seeded Smyczek, the path to the finalist spot opened up for seventh-seeded Sam Groth. But he still had to get past former home court hero Dennis Nevolo.

Nevolo had beaten No. 6 Rik De Voest as well as Ed Corrie before taking out John Milton in an epic match, where he survived five match points in the third set tiebreaker before prevailing 3-6,6-1,7-6(7).

Fortunately for Groth, Nevolo didn't have quite enough left in the semis and went down, 7-6(6),6-4, before a large crowd applauding his run. But Nevolo was pleased with his accomplishments. "Playing back in Champaign was a huge inspiration for me," said Nevolo. "I love playing in front of the Illini family. I'm really looking forward to 2014."

Unseeded Sandgren had fought his way to the finals too. He beat Filip Peliwo, No. 2 Jack Sock, No. 8 JP Smith (also a former Vol) and Daniel Smethurst in the semifinals. In an exciting championship match, Sandgren was able to squeeze out 3-6,6-3,7-6(4) win over Groth.

Sandgren did not get the sweep, as he and Texas A&M grad Austin Krajicek (seeded two) lost in the finals of doubles to the unseeded team of Ed Corrie (University of Texas) and Daniel Smethurst. That match was yet another testament to the tournaments high caliber of players with a 7-6,0-6,10-7 score.

Though the sweep would have been nice, the singles win was especially sweet for Sandgren, who had lost in the semifinals the previous week to Smyczek in Knoxville.

Although Sandgren went to the University of Tennessee, he does have connections with the University of Illinois. His current coach, Billy Heiser, is a former member of the Illini tennis team. Sandgren is also sponsored by Athletic DNA, the clothing line whose founders include former Illinois player Michael Calkins.

"It's really special to win my first Challenger, especially here in Champaign," said Sandgren after the match. "Taking a step forward and winning my first Challenger feels great."

Was it you that asked Tennys to tell us an embarrassing story about Rhyne?

No, that was Patrick (another fanatic Rhyne fan). My question was right before his (favorite hitting partner). He lives in Winnetka and was coached by Jarmere Jenkins' older brother for 3 years as a junior. Patrick and I bugged Rhyne everyday on twitter about asking for a wildcard into Winnetka. He finally gave in but was told that all wildcards were already given

Btw he told Tennys on twitter that he will track him down today to get an answer lol. His tweets are hilarious.
