He just won a double match last week, with Gael no less ;). Maybe he's not that hopeless :p. And I'm sure Richard knows what he's getting into when he pairs with Gilles, if he wants to win the double title, he would have pair with Jo, no?

Nice :D. Somehow I think all those double participation probably got something to do with Davis Cup, not that he'll ever be picked to play DC double, but still.

I think his net game has improved greatly, he's looking to finish points at the net more often and gets to the net with more confident, which is a good thing. The problem though with double is that he just seems not sure of his positioning. And of course in double, he's at the net against the other guy who's also at the net already ready to pass him, unlike in single that he usually got control of the point first by forcing the other guy back with little room to pass. But anyway, playing double is all good, and just maybe one of these days we will get to see his double match. Couple of years ago in Montreal, he played with Chardy and they put them on center court probably bcos they are 2 Frenchies. Sadly it was last match of the day and the stream was cut off when all single matches were over. But anyway, we can still hope. ;)

I might be in the minority, but I think that the Gilles/Richard doubles combination is far from useless. It might not be successful right away, but given their complementary strengths and weaknesses, it could be a very useful alliance.

I love looking at the bits and pieces of the draw and try to guess what the actual one is. Looks like Gilles is playing a qualifier in R1, and Berdych at R3 and Rafa in QF.

so this is his half looks like:

Fish has a BYE
Lopez vs Q
Gulbis vs Ferrero
Llodra vs Youzhny

Wawrinka vs Nalbandian
Montanes vs Q
Andujar vs Anderson
Murray has a BYE

Berdych has a BYE
Dolgopolov vs Chvojka
Karlovic vs Monaco
Q vs Simon

Verdasco vs Q
Tipsarevic vs Haas
Dodig vs Chardy
Nadal has a BYE

4-1 now. He really should have played Washington to get rhythm on the hardcourts because this would be an awful loss. He has a reasonable draw with no points to defend and he blows it.

Well, that's it.

It's not the end of the world but it still sucks loads to lose first round in a big event.

I don't understand him. He doesn't gain confidence after winning tournament, no momentum at all. Maybe he really should have played Washington, esp that it was such a easy field last week. Oh well, play better next week, that's all he can do now.

mike s.
08-09-2011, 05:45 PM
7-5, 6-2. I hope he was sick or something :p.

You can't really take anything from this match because everything was awful. It's disappointing because the top 10 is so close but he needs to pick it up at the big events if he really wants to get back to where he was at number 6.

It's good he's playing the doubles so he can get at least another match in here.

misty1
08-09-2011, 05:48 PM
he's definately not a confidence/momentum guy..he needs matches to get himself in rythym so i guess this was somewhat to be expected

hopefully cincinnatti and US open go better

lalaland
08-09-2011, 05:59 PM
It's a first round, he should not lose in first round if he wants to be back on top, big or small events. Yet, it's the 5th times he lost 1st round this year. Inconsistency is the only constant in this season.

a stiff neck for Gilles which happened during the warm-up according to this:

J'ai fait de mon mieux, qui n'était pas énorme aujourd'hui. Mon cou s'est raidi à l'échauffement et je ne pouvais jouais comme je voulais. J'avais peur de me blesser, peur que la blessure survienne. J'essaierai d'être prêt pour Cincinnati. S'il la douleur disparaît, ça ira. Autrement, je devrai attendre jusqu'à l'US Open."

He only stays at Top 10 if no one catches him this week, Almagro is only 1 win away from getting back his Top 10. Even Verdasco has a shot if he gets to the final (a big IF of course :p). Anyway, I'm not holding my breath. Frankly, I rather him entering Top 10 in grander style by winning some matches.

And like you, I also prefer him just plain crap than having injury problem again . How long this neck thing is gonna linger this time? Hopefully he can play Cincy in full strength. I hate to see him loses early, but I hate it more to see him play in pain. Argh, this must be frustrating for Gilles. So the reason he can't gather the momentum is every time he starts doing well, his neck problem strikes. damn luck.

On L'Equipe:

He said the neck stuck since friday, it wasn't serious, but it makes him hesitates on key strokes and that made the difference in the match. It's not bad enough to stop him from playing the double (I guess bcos he doesn't really take the double too seriously :p), but it's a big set back for his campaign to qualify for the Masters.

lalaland

Richard and Gilles finished their double match rather quickly, losting 4-6, 1-6. All the other matches got suspended right at the moment when their match finished. So it is propably for the best that they lost quickly so they don't have to hang around more to wait out yet another rain delay ;).

mike s.

It's unfortunate he didn't win that first round because now that Nadal is out that bottom half is wide open. He really could have made the finals here.

Gilles Simon Roger Cup Interview August 9th 2011

P. PETZSCHNER/G. Simon
7-5, 6-2

THE MODERATOR: Questions in French.

Q. There was wind up in the stands. How did it feel down on the court?
GILLES SIMON: There was no wind.

Q. At 1-All you talked with the umpire. What was it about?
GILLES SIMON: I don't know. I don't remember.

Q. He sliced all the time. Did it have something to do with the loss?
GILLES SIMON: More than his game, the problem today was me. I wasn't able to practice as I wanted before the match, so when I stepped on the court, I was not ready, I was not confident, and it was difficult for me to hit the ball.
I did the best I could, which was not much today. In fact, my neck got stiff during practice and I was not able to play as I wanted to today. I was afraid to hit. I was afraid that the pain would come.
In fact, his slice helped me because it gave me more time. If he had played faster, it would have been more difficult for me.

Q. When was the last time you hurt your neck?
GILLES SIMON: It was in Madrid. In Miami it was my back, not the neck.

Q. And there's nothing to do about all these pains?
GILLES SIMON: Not much. I try to practice, practice stronger if I can. But at the end of that practice I had my neck when I was serving. I thought, Well, I'm here, let's give it a chance.
Before that I was feeling a bit better. That happened. I didn't do too badly because I only lost the first set 7-5. The second was a bit faster.
As I said, I did my best and I couldn't do much today.

Q. Are you going to stay a bit longer here or are you going to Cincinnati immediately?
GILLES SIMON: I have to play doubles with Richard today, so I'll try to build up some confidence during that match. It's tougher during a match than during practice, though. I will try to get ready for Cincinnati.
If the pain goes away, it will be fine, otherwise I'll have to wait for the US Open.

Q. Was it real pain or was it fear of feeling pain?
GILLES SIMON: Well, the muscle was stiff. It was there. Also, because of that, I was not able to run during the past two weeks. If you don't keep practicing right and left, you lose your rhythm.

Q. You usually play doubles with Gaël. Why are you playing with Richard here?
GILLES SIMON: Well, I don't know. It just happened that way. But in Cincinnati I'll be playing with Gaël.

FastScripts Transcript by ASAP Sports

He has so many small nagging problems this season that I think he lost count. He didn't have any problem in Madrid as I can remember. The back was hurt during Queen's, or maybe I got confused too. Oh well, just hope he's fit next week, and the rest of the season.

lalaland
08-16-2011, 07:29 PM
He broke, thanks to Melzer probably. He's still playing rather badly, very passive but he pretty much misses whenever he stepped in to a short ball, so I can understand why he's not aggressive :o. But really, keeping the ball deep so Melzer can't take over will be the key. He needs to keep calm.

Silver.

He didn't face a BP in the last set. Hopefully same again.

They had a pretty warm hug after Gilles got bageled by Melzer in the DC match. So I don't think Gilles has any problem with Melzer. Not sure about Melzer though.

from L'Equipe:

The match was entertaining because of all of the arguing. Tipsarevic has the worst attitude though, he smashes more rackets than any current player I've seen.

I thought Gilles played well for the most part although Tipsarevic's level definitely slipped in the 2nd and 3rd. Should be a long one against Ferrer.

Tutu
08-18-2011, 03:08 AM
Pissy Gilles was so hilarious. In the first set he was just bitching all over the place but in the second and third he was just in a quiet fury. So funny seeing him win and probably look even more furious, before then launching into another big argument with the umpire whilst he shook his hand.

lalaland
08-18-2011, 04:05 AM
Only saw a few points... did see him looking really furious, that stare of gloom look. But anyway, glad he won. A 3 hrs match after he had 2.5 hrs yesterday, with a bad back. I'm not sure he can handle David tomorrow, who's probably going to out-grind him. Well, anyhow, good luck tomorrow, Gilles.

Gilles was interviewed by Justin Gimelstob after the match on TC and he seemed to be in a good mood. I don't remember any mention of the injury or anything. He was talking about his tendency to play up and down to his opponents level but that he was happy with his progress this year and that his goal had been to get to the top 20 by Wimbledon and top 10 by the end of the year. Gilles said he expects the match against Ferrer to be long and that he will have to fight very hard to win.

Justin also mentioned that he's seen Timothee in the player's lounge and a lot of the players are hanging out with his son and Gilles seemed very happy when he was talking about him.

I saw the last game and he shaked hand with the umpire, and then he just kept yapping at Murphy after that. Didn't look like he's in his usual won a match good mood. But I guess he smiled for the camera.
