14 year old Zverev's brother lost only 4-6 2-6 to Kirche, not bad. Hopefully he is a good player in 3-4 years or so.

As for Mischa Zverev, he stayed in the US for one week only already in Newport and now he does it again for Washington?! Another one week America trip coming up for the USO qualifying. So he flies to America 3 times for 1 week just to collect three losses?

Almost all of my favorites are on the top half, which sucks.

Benoit v Simone. That will be interesting. I think Simone can outhit Paire but a lot of what Paire does well is what causes Simone problems, so I'm not sure. I want Simone to win this event but this match makes me sick as I support both so much.

Jan has a nice draw for two rounds, I think he can beat Steve again, and hopefully Steve wins his challenger this week. Then likely Poto. That would be the major difficult match, but since Poto doesn't need the points at all, hopefully Jan beats him should they play. Or Steve if he beats Jan.

Bjorn v Pippo potential R2 makes me sick also. I may have to root for Bjorn there as he needs the points. Hopefully Bjorn beats Lorenzi and he should if he's in any sort of form.

Marc has a good draw for at least two rounds, and hopefully he'll take advantage of that and make the QF at the very least.

Also GL to Minar and hopefully he beats Rosol, and hopefully Pere makes the QF.

The four matches tomorrow are all interesting and close on paper. Marco needs to avenge his previous disasterous loss to Galvani. He's been off some weeks and should feel good and rested.

Also, Ignatik v Ciric will be interesting as the main weapons for both is the serve. Ciric hasn't done anything since Sopot so lets see if he can get back on track.

A real chance? You've got to be kidding me. Balleret is an excellent player on clay. He doesn't play much - injury problems I presume - but his ranking is no indication of his ability. Balleret got the prize draw and should summarily dismiss the Austrian.

Excellent win for Ciric 7-6, 6-3.

First set was tight and Ignatik had the better chances, although they both held fairly easily most of the set. Nikola played well in the tiebreak and then a sloppy game at the start of the second gave Ignatik a break but from 0-3 down, Ciric won 6 in a row to win the match. Played some nice drop shots and his one handed back hand caused Ignatik problems in that second set. They both impressed me in parts, nice to see Niko winning without relying on his serve.

Wow, I've never seen Balleret as a talented tennis player, rather as one of the weakest challenger players on the tour.

I think he has talent. He is not a worldbeater by any means, but on clay he is a solid player. His level is good enough to be hovering between 200-300; in any case much higher than where is at now. Yes, perhaps among the 30% weakest Challenger players, but still better than many guys who are getting direct entries into Challengers these days.

My point was that people were underestimating him, seeing him as an easy draw for Muster. I stand corrected in the sense that I clearly underestimated Muster, who apparently played well.

Ignatik is following a confused competitions' schedule
Since March he played almost 8 or 9 clay tournaments and only one or two on fast surfaces
He is clearly an hard surface player (high serve level, flat shots, good net attitude) and i don't really get why he keep playing on clay
Plus he doesn't have an exact idea of how to manage a match in relation to the result and to the opponent.
He could easily get into top 100 planning a 80% tournaments schedule on hard surfaces

p.s. at the beginning of the second set there was an injury time, but i didn't know who asked it
probably Ignatik, because the result went from 7-6 0-3 to the final 7-6 6-3

Balleret reminds me always a match played against Federer in MonteCarlo Masters of 2006
he passed a couple of rounds beating Rochus and Grosjean and i think he will be remembered for those good three days
Luckily for him not to be remembered in tennis history for losing to an almost 50 years old guy!
Something risky even for those two or three guys that played Borg on his ridicolous return
Anyway kudos to Muster for taking a set to Gaba (and that suprised a lot!) and Balleret!

I'm a little disappointed in Ignatik, he's been around long enough now, and he has a game that should be at least 70-100 consistently. He won Junior RG I think, right? I think he likes playing on clay. But the surface definitely doesn't suit his game.

League matches generally mean absolutely nothing.

Do you have an explanation why league matches mean "absolutley nothing"? I am not an expert, but most German league matches have more qualtity than any challenger. (Melzer, F.Mayer, Troicki, Garcia-Lopez, Starace, Fognini, Seppi, Kohlschreiber, Petzschner, Montanes etc.)

Escpecially Gaba is playing German leaugue for years by now. He wants another contract next year and players are paid with an extra bonus if they win. I really dont see why a League match should be something much less important than a CH-match.

League matches are only thrown in as extra matches during tournament weeks in order to make some money. It is lucrative, especially for Challenger players whose financial situation often isn't that rosy. But League matches are never the priority for players (which partially explains why players like Ulihrach, C. Rochus, Gehrlein are still active in League matches). They might arrive only an hour or so before the match starts, fatigued from last week's play, without any practice (and they might just have come from a different surface) and without any clear motivation to win the match (unless the bonus you are talking about is that substantial). A lot of players also thrive on stress and pressure, but this is lacking in League matches; since players are often active in several Leagues, and since they generally only play 2-3 matches per league, loyalty is also not a motivating factor in matches.

Of course some players take it more seriously than others, but league matches are generally a poor reflection of players' form and ability. I've also seen a few league matches myself and I really don't agree with your statement that the matches are better than many Challenger matches.

CooCooCachoo
08-09-2011, 02:21 PM
In addition, I assume that most Challenger players don't play just to get by financially; they play to win tournaments, to rise on the rankings and ultimately to play in Grand Slams. This means tournament matches will always trump league matches.

I agree with you. The preparation isnt the best by most of the players (for exempel Haase who drove on Saturday after his win to a league match) and there isnt any loyalty. But the money you get there is quite lucrative and if you perfom bad you wont get good contracts anymore.

I think league matches can possibly show if someone is in form, but I am with you that it cant be a big parameter.

It depends which league macthes you wtach. The top 4 of the league have massive players.

Some match ups this season:
Malisse vs. F.Mayer
Hanescu vs. Kohlschreiber
Del Bonis vs. Tipsarevic
Melzer vs. Garcia-Lopez
Montanes vs. M.Gonzales
Kubot vs. Starace
Andujar vs. F. MAyer
Machado vs. Kohlschreiber
You wont find those match ups on CH-Tour...

Actually Machado is playing like a sort of Chang of the challengers
pushing back the ball from every side of the court
He is the test that tells you if you're in form and most of all if you really want to play or not in a certain day
If you get in the court distracted or thinking about other stuff you're gonna get out in an hour like Hajek did
If you play your best game and Adrian should do it, i think it's a three setter in which the victory is 50%-50%
But this 6-1 6-2 (like a similar result he took from Odesnik) shows clearly that he tanked immediately the fight

Rosol def. Minar 7-5 6-3

If that's the way Minar has played in these latest losses for him, then I can see why he's been struggling.

I guess he's playing for the R1 paycheck, only he knows. He was a lot better last week v Trevisan than he was today.

Filo V.

Actually Machado is playing like a sort of Chang of the challengers
pushing back the ball from every side of the court
He is the test that tells you if you're in form and most of all if you really want to play or not in a certain day
If you get in the court distracted or thinking about other stuff you're gonna get out in an hour like Hajek did
If you play your best game and Adrian should do it, i think it's a three setter in which the victory is 50%-50%
But this 6-1 6-2 (like a similar result he took from Odesnik) shows clearly that he tanked immediately the fightI don't fully agree, Rui isn't a pusher. He puts a decent amount of pace on the ball, and yes he re-directs and moves the ball around a lot. He doesn't make a lot of errors. I do agree that he is a test for players to see how committed they are.

Ungur is an inconsistent shotmaker who likes to unwind on big shots and hit winners or create great angles. He can't do that nearly as effectively when a guy is moving him all over, and also standing on the baseline. Plus Rui returns well and Ungur has a weak serve. So overall, the result doesn't surprise me.

I have to say Riba has improved his serve A LOT, he didn't have this weapon a couple of years ago.

Trevisan didn't play bad either, but his game is still inconsistent.

Riba will meet Leo Mayer in 2nd round, I'd say the winner of this match will give at least one of the semifinalists.

Filo V.

Pere has improved his serve but his serve has always been one of his primary weapons. It's definitely gotten better since he's gotten to the ATP tour. He's really an old school clay courter, big serve, extreme-grip big forehand.

Well today was a good day, I can't say I'm upset Simone lost, because Benoit really needs the win at least as much. Now Benoit should beat Ciric but it will not be easy. He's really lucky to play someone like Ciric after this physical match.

Tomorrow, the obvious highlight match is Pippo v Bjorn. This is another sad match for me, and I think I have to root for Bjorn, as he really needs the points.

Also, selfishly I hope Klizan beats Machado, so either Pippo or Bjorn have an easier path to the QF.

I agree Martijn it's not a horrible draw, but Simone isn't in good form and he's not confident. So he really could have used a super easy R1 just to get a win under his belt. Then I think he would have beaten Paire.

I never really saw any of that talent so I was confused myself. As we see now, that's not really the case.

i think this is THE point :oh:

Bjorn had to retire, looks like a back injury. Klizan is lucky. It would be disgusting if he wins this event. Now Marco has to win the bottom half of the draw for sure.

Hopefully Bjorn isn't out an extended period. This really hurts his chances to finish YE top 100.

People is so undefined

I think Jesse is extremely attractive, in the sense that he has many features that are conventionally seen to be beautiful: dark complexion, piercing blue/green eyes and a symmetrical face.

Anyways, he was on the verge of the Top 100 at one point (#110 I think), and I'm afraid that will be his peak. He has a good indoor game, but on other surfaces he's not good enough to be anything other than a journeyman.

08-12-2011, 04:22 PM
I guess fans of Jesse said these things, some Dutch hopefuls

He does have nice eyes, but his face is just weird to me, his smile. Even his eyes are quite long/wide, so he has sort of the scary eye look.

As for his game, he's good in a lot of departments but doesn't do one thing at a high-enough level to be a top 100 player consistently.

Rosol is playing really, really well and looks motivated. Hopefully Marc hangs in here. He's not playing too badly so lets see if the Czech can keep it up.

Filo V.
08-12-2011, 04:28 PM
Marco won that point to get to break point. That should not have been a replay. He could have broken back.

Rosol is hitting the ball extremely big and not missing. This is going to be difficult for Marc to win, and that would ruin the bottom half of the draw.

Filo V.
08-12-2011, 04:34 PM
That set went by too quickly. Marc is still upset about the call from the previous game from before. He needs to hold it together. Rosol will be ultra tough to beat if he keeps playing the way he has so far, though. You can tell he really does hate Gicquel

Filo V.
08-12-2011, 04:49 PM
Marc starting to find his game a bit now with Rosol dropping his level, exactly what he needed.

Rosol-Gicquel 6-3 3-6

Let's go Marco!

Filo V.

Awful game for Rosol, Gicquel *2-1 in the third.

Marco is starting to really outsmart Rosol and beat him to the punch.

Strong third set for Marco.

Filo V.
08-12-2011, 05:26 PM
Rosol said something like "why are you saying something to me" and Marc was like, I'm not, whatever. It wasn't anything to serious. The handshake at the end will tell the tale, though.

Filo V.
08-12-2011, 05:30 PM
Rosol's problems are that he lacks a plan B and his footwork/movement. Also his second serve isn't great. He's a ballbasher, that's his game and what he's most effective doing, and he isn't an amazing natural athlete, so those aspects of his game won't improve overly so, but what he should look to improve is his returning consistency and making a few less errors, more controlled aggression. Also using the net more effectively and his transition game in general should be improved.

Filo V.
08-12-2011, 05:31 PM
Marc's getting tight! Keep it together

Filo V.
08-12-2011, 05:34 PM
That was a bad final game from Marc, but his serve basically won him the game.

Gicquel def. Rosol 3-6 6-3 6-4

Now a great chance to make the finals here.

Both Poto and Jan are hitting the ball well, Jan is making a few too many errors and Poto is playing good defense.

Filo V.
08-12-2011, 06:33 PM
The stream isn't working very well at all :(

Filo V.
08-12-2011, 06:42 PM
Poto just too solid in the first set, great serving. Jan will have to take care of business on his serve first and foremost.

Filo V.
08-12-2011, 06:49 PM
Poto is just playing too well, which sucks. He shouldn't even be here. If he wins this event, it will be the worst possible result.

Jan isn't playing a bad match but Poto's movement and consistency is too much.

Smoke944
08-12-2011, 07:02 PM
Starace is 63 in the world now, nothing crazy about him playing an 85k euro challenger.

Filo V.
08-12-2011, 07:14 PM
Maybe, but the rest of the players are out of the top 100. He's not in any ranking danger, so therefore he really doesn't need this whatsoever. This is like a vacation week for him, the other players are playing for something.

Filo V.
08-12-2011, 07:15 PM
This is one of the better matches I've seen of Poto this season.

Filo V.
08-12-2011, 07:23 PM
Jan's played back to back good return games but Poto just won't let up. It's too much. This is bullshit. Jan would have beaten every other player in the draw.

Filo V.
08-12-2011, 07:28 PM
Starace def. Hajek 6-4 6-3

Poto's reaction at the end tells me he definitely is very motivated here. Fuck him this week, though.

Filo V.

So now Paire/Mayer will have to save the top half of the draw.

what a comeback from leo at 40-0 and 3 sp. paire now sure is down. leo start to find his shots. i expect 7-5 mayer. i always liked mayer and he still looks not tired.finally he is back for me.i hope he can qualify for us open.

Filo V.
08-12-2011, 08:13 PM
Leo was missing return after return, and then out of the blue he stepped it up majorly and broke. Benoit wasn't that bad at all, Mayer just took it. It's like a switch went off and said no, I'm taking this set. So much confidence and self belief.

Filo V.
08-12-2011, 08:15 PM
Benoit is starting to fall apart. Leo's game is on a completely different level right now. This is probably the best he's played in his career these last few weeks.

Filo V.

Mayer serving up 40-0 to make 5 consecutive unforced errors and lose the set

Filo V.
08-12-2011, 08:20 PM
Back to back 40-0 on serve and losing serve, and these are two big serves as well. Surely don't see that every day.

Give credit to Benoit for hanging in there and he hit a great forehand return on set point. This week he's showing more mental fortitude than in the past.

Keyser Soze
08-12-2011, 08:25 PM
Leo plays like cr@p atm. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets bageled this set. Such a mental headcase...

Funny second set...thanks to the scoreline and the stand-up comediant skills showed by Paire.

Paire wins at 40 - Mayer was up 40-15
Paire breaks at 15
Paire wins at 40 - Mayer was up 40-0
Mayer wins at 0
Paire wins at 30 - Mayer was up 30-15 when Paire hits 3 aces in-a-row
Mayer wins at 15
Paire wins at 40
Mayer wins at 0
Paire wins at 30

leo now its time to rest i think. it looked like a training match for me in second set. if i am not wrong both make jokes to each other after a close call. paire must stop his clown style and improve his forehand+second serve+ stop with stupid drop shots.but his backhand is really great.

Filo V.
08-12-2011, 08:58 PM
Paire's BH definitely is a great shot. He can hit winners from hit on the run and in all directions, great returns, great dropshots, and it's pretty consistent. But also true, he needs to work on the forehand and improve that shot to be at least close to the same level as the backhand and the second serve is weak.

He played well today, I wonder how he does v Starace, someone consistent who will make him play.

Filo V.
08-12-2011, 09:01 PM
Leo seemed more mentally tired at the end. The intensity definitely dropped in the second set. Anyway this has been a great run of form for him, he doesn't play this upcoming week, he's preparing for USO qualifying now. I think his confidence remains high even with this loss and he'll be a force in every event he enters.

Filo V.
08-12-2011, 09:02 PM
I want Benoit to win the tournament now. Paire v Gicquel is the only acceptable final.
