Strange for Lu , he go to play challenger like this, why he don`t play in Washington with high ranking players . For me his will win this challenger.

It's actually a very smart decision, as he has a lot to defend coming up, and gaining 100 points here situates him nicely in terms of his ranking. Plus, it's "easy" points because he's the clear favorite, so he'll see this as a great opportunity. He can win more points here than he would have in Washington.

Also if Rendy doesn't win, he's already in Canada, so less travel to get to Montreal. So, it's really a smart scheduling decision, that I'm surprised a few other players didn't take.

Washington is MUCH closer to Montreal than Vancouver. Vancouver to Montreal is a five hour flight. Washington to Montreal is an hour and a half flight.

Well that makes sense given the fact Vancouver is western Canada and DC is in the Northeast. Something I should have known but I was thinking Canada=Canada so of course that would be lesser travel

Well, in any case, it's a smart scheduling decision for Lu and hopefully he takes the title. He's had a good last weeks and he needs to continue the run.

It's almost embarrassing if he doesn't win. I think Yani/Pospisil, Zemlja and Reynolds could push him though.

I just don't think this tournament is the right kind of preparation for him. Sure, he will get match play, but of such a lower calibre than what he needs.

Maybe he more wanted some motivation...
and of course, points

Or maybe he got appearance fee? His last 2 weeks were very good on ATP level, there must be some reason to play a challenger after all.

Or maybe he wanted a mixed event with women?

He often does this, its already his 3rd challenger of the year.

Filo V.
08-02-2011, 06:50 PM
The reason is points/confidence. He was horrible this year until the grass season, so he scheduled this event in, with the idea that he can bag an easy 100 points if he keeps struggling, and save his ranking. Also he can get wins under his belt to prepare for the latter half of the HC season. It's a wise decision on his part.

Those tournies in North America are quite boring to me
Always the same players in the past (Russell, Kendrick, Kim, Levine, etc.) and in the present (Reynolds, Ginepri, Odesnik, the canadians)
Wish there was some different player making it to the semifinals

idolwatcher1

Semifinals:
Vasek Pospisil, ranked #186
vs.
James Ward, ranked #174

&

Robby Ginepri, ranked #411 (his lowest ranking since July 2001)
vs.
Bobby Reynolds, ranked #122

Both head-to-heads are 0-0
This will be the first time that Robby and Bobby (who lived in Robby's house for awhile) have played each other professionally.

else he will always remain a good semifinalist
we need some new talent rising

Should be top 150 for Ward for the first time in his career, good work! I can't see him ever being consistently top 100, but I'm sure it must be a goal of his to get there at some point. Top 108 would take out Boggo's career high for best active non-Murray Brits...

you must not agree with me. but i am sure that he tanked. he can play a lot challengers, make bit boney with that. but atp montreal wildcard is another level + he can beat a chela, which played only clay last months, and vasek only plays on hard. maybe he can make bigger money there?

I mean yeah, it is a bigger opportunity. But at the same time there is basically no travel to Montreal, and if he won this tournament he would no doubt get a Tuesday start. So I mean it's not like he should even need to tank

Pospisil did not tank, he just lost, and the fact he broke when Ward originally served for the match should show he was fighting to win. We can end that conversation.

Too bad Bobby is again injured, and lost the opportunity for top 100 this week, but at least Robby is in the final. I think the final is 50-50. I'm guessing whoever serves best will win.

hhmm...i'm not sure he tanked
i mean, a semifinal on home soil it's not a good moment to tank...
if you have the will to tank, a wedsnday or thursday is the right moment
or probably he was checking Chela's result in Kitzbuhel
if he had to play the final, Vasek mantained the jet lag advantage plus playing on hard courts
i don't know...however i didn't ever heard of tanking a semifinal when you're guaranteed in the main draw of a tournament

Ward is making me eat my words from a few weeks ago. I like it. :D

Another excellent week for him, and it is a bit of a shame that he was already defending 23pts this week (qualified and reached QF stage in Vancouver last year), as it will dampen his new rankings rise on Monday. Nevertheless, he is poised to move up to top 155, and top 145 if he beats Ginepri.

I took a look at the Binghamton draw, and I must say he has been very fortunate considering that he is unseeded. He will play a qualifier, and could play #2 seed Capdeville in R2. Capdeville is tricky, but he is the sort of player that James will hopefully get used to competing with now, and a win is definitely possible. Nice half, so if he has enough energy he could have another big week. He needs to keep striking while the iron is hot...
