Bernard's game is sweet to watch. He's so stiff and relaxed but when he goes after the ball, it really shoots through the court. He played much more cleaver and was the one on the offense for most of the final three sets, he improved his court positioning, he got the ball deeper, he improved his serving in a major way. He returned MUCH better and more aggressively in the final three sets and used the slice more effectively, and came to net more. He's a smart guy and really knows how to play within himself, has a lot of maturity, and exposed some of Igor's weaknesses.

I can definitely see Bernie proving to be a thorn in the side of Soderling tomorrow. Getting closer to the top 100 with every win, and he's got a lot of skills that make him a nice player to watch.

Andreev should have won this in straight sets, had plenty of chances.

Kudos to Tomic he is a very smart match player, sure he has a dodgy 2nd serve, poor movement forward but he played a brilliant last set.

Good that Tomic qualified for this event.

Soda won't be easy, but it's possible... Specially if his serve is on. But even if he lose, he should be proud of himself. He's stil 18!

Funny how Tomic seemed like the least likely to go through out of the young'uns for much of yesterday and today is the only one through to R3.

Displayed some great Tennis today and totally caught Andreev cold, good to see. Good signs for him and Aussie tennis, bad signs for his already great legion of haters.

Good luck vs Soda.

A sad day for Aussie tennis

What are you talking about? I for one, am not a fan of Tomic... but he is what Australia needs... we need someone stepping it up aside from Hewitt.

I don't care if you think he's a pusher/bad attitude whatever, but this is great for Australian tennis.. and he did it the hard way qualifying and now coming from 2 sets down... I think we will see a huge improvement from him after this tournament.

Hewitt =Legend
06-24-2011, 02:58 PM
Andreev blew this big time, had no business losing this match and should have wrapped it up yesterday and taken advantage of Tomic's lack of interest..

Have to give credit to Bernie though, he has this unique ability to hang in there and the first serve has improved, he gets a lot of free points of it now. Got lucky here and he will lift against Soderling.

Yeah, that's something from the past. We're judging him by his tennis ability and performances on a tennis court as he is today. He's 18 and in R3 of Wimby, not many can say that nowadays. I'm sure even if he managed to reach the QF's here, most of you lot would still badmouth him as if he were a failure without showing an ounce of impartiality.

The kids doing well and looks to have a bright future, hate him or not, you'll have to open your eyes and admit it (as a hater.. I mean realist).

Ah. So you lot just don't like the person enough from what you've heard/seen of them to hope the worst for them in terms of Tennis achievements.. well I s'pose that's fair enough. Was a bit confused there wondering whether you were all just being unkind and delusional. That clears things up.

With regards to what can be seen on court of late, Tomic is showing maturity and a level head. Alot of the time his face just seems to be set in stone. Ignoring his past, I can't personally see anything unlike-able currently. I'm sure he'll grow on alot of people who know how to forgive and forget as he matures.

Best win of his carreer, never in doubt. Didn't see the match but i'm surprised that 18 year old youngstar managed to comeback from 0-2 against very experienced player.

Robin isn't looking supreme in this tournament, Tomic will have his chances.

i like your optimism about your player, sticking with him despite his lame results......kudos for that but dimitrov has some major defects......his backhand is a very lame shot......it often lands so short that players can attack it all day......his forehand and serve are not that special either......i don't think he will make it to the next level with that game......

The most shocking thing about this for Australian tennis is not that Tomic is now their number 1, but that if he had lost this match the number 1 Australian would have been Matosevic, which would have been quite the indictment!

andreev is just a retard.

tomic tried to tank at the start of the third set but when he saw that Andreev's brain had shut down he decided to put a few more balls in play.

In the fourth set, Andreev was first to 30 in four of Tomic's five games but he couldn't put Bernie's 70mph 2nd serve bombs back in play.

A few times he even tried the trademark Gooch blocked forehand return and charge. Doesn't really work when the block lands either on the service line or in the bottom of the net.

I doubt flyboy even watched the match judging by his report in the OP.

Looking forward to seeing how Soderling treats Bernie's Bombs

Andreev showing again the mental midget he is. Tomic raises his game at Slams, which is a very good sign for a youngster.

Andreev did lower his level dramatically, but Tomic, especially in the 5th, raised his level and played a much better match being behind two sets. He deserves credit for raising his level and improving his game, and being more offensive.

on the first point, i usually treat filo.v's posts as a report from someone watching a livescore then filling in the gaps with an imagination after that...

secondly, took soderling a few sets, but he finally copped on to lleytons greasy half pace sliders... he'll be in tune you'd think...

Personally, I'm just complimenting him on a good performance, and a potentially bright looking future. Don't have to bandwagon or even support a player to give a realistic account of events.

Can't speak for the others.

I really do hope he is able to push Soda and possibly take him out though.

Tomic's short c/c slice should cause all sorts of problems for Sod, but I'm not sure Tomic has the accurate acceleration or fleetfootedness on the following shot to take advantage. He should be digging out videos of Fed/Sod matches for ideas.

Tomic is a smart match player, on the big stage, thus far, he's shown a maturity beyond his years and I've been impressed. Does some thing well and some badly, as previously mentioned.

Could cause Sod some serious problems in rallies with the flatness of all his balls and a slice that skids through nicely, 2nd serve should get taken apart though.

I wonder where Tomic learnt to play tennis, because he has some of the most fugly stroke production I have ever seen - both on his groundstrokes and particularly serve.

Anyway, Tomic is so overrated. Everyone seems to be comparing him to Murray, but there's a huge difference in that he's a fucking snail while Murray's movement and athletic ability is the best part about his game. Awful performance from Igor to choke from such a lead, hopefully Soderling will take out the trash today.
