ALL the credit in the world goes to Feli. This is going to crush A-Rod. Feli was the better player throughout the entire match. A-Rod was out-aced, out-returned, he was out volleyed, and he was outplayed from the baseline. Lopez kept the error count low, used the slice effectively, and simply played very good grass court tennis. A big win for him, and he closed the match out when you thought he would choke.

As for Roddick, you seriously have to question where his career is headed. 7-0 H2H over Lopez and he was thoroughly outplayed today. Grass clearly isn't a surface that he's a threat on anymore. How he does during the USO series may end up defining what A-Rod does in his career.

Another clanger dropped by the BBC when, on match point, they decided to get their wires crossed and inadvertently switched pictures to yet another WTA match, but the sound of Lopez taking his final match point remained. Give this shit to ITV.

And I'm sad for Roddick. He truly does deserve a Wimbledon. Shame it's not happening until he gets a forehand.

I do hope that Feliciano retires after this match. Because he is the biggest choker in history. I mean if you are that big of a choker, you should probably pay a fine. Now Roddick is a mug and he outmugged himself today. But the fact remains that Lopez will choke against any decent player (just refer to his match against Fed in tie-break)

Totally agree. Roddick just isn't the player he was two years ago when he beat Murray, their Queen's match proved this as well. To be honest his 09-Wimbledon-form is as far away as the Napoleonic wars. Lopez on the other hand has played quite good tennis the last couple of months, he might make it competitive against Murray assuming he won't have a bad day against Monfils/Kubot.

Lopez hitting over his backhand, just terrifying for Roddick who's used to the Spaniard folding pitifully on that side.

Captivating attacking performance from the lefty, and since that mega-choke against Fed in Madrid he seems to have consulted a sports psychologist -himself; he was half closing his eyes and talking to himself between points to fend off the continuous waves of nerves. Worked this time, wonder if he can keep this up in R4 when he'll surely be the favourite.

Good to see him, yeah. He played one Wimbledon towards the end of his career and one Halle tournament somewhat earlier I think. He wanted to play one Wimbledon when he was near his peak but they didn't want to seed him although he was 10th in the rankings or sth and he was drawn against a grasslord (Ivanisevic? Lopez played so much better than in his match against Roddick at Queen's, mainly because he was much more solid from the baseline. Roddick's serve was not as good as it can be.

Roddick heaped praise on Lopez and rightfully so. Roddick is not at a level where he can cope easily with such a strong performance. I actually think he played fine, just didn't raise his level in the tie breaks and unsurprisingly for two big servers a few points were crucial, Lopez won those points. Great win for the Spaniard for whom a third Wimbledon QF is within reach.

He couldn't do anything right. In contrast, Deliciano couldn't miss. He didn't even offer the obligatory choke that he's known for. :( It really was a tremendous performance from him, the kind of playing that he's been capable of but could rarely pull off. Hats off to him, this win was a long time coming. :hatoff: I hope he doesn't lose in the next round, though.

I'm not worried about Andy, he is like the Phoenix, he will rise from the ashes again and get his revenge at Davis Cup. If the US has a good showing there maybe that will help lift Andy's confidence to make another run at the USO this year.

Wow, poor Roddick.

F.Lopez is such an underrated player on fast surfaces and can beat anybody when on fire. Love that big lefty serve of his.
Really a spaniard with a difference, plays his brand of tennis, making most out of his ability and you got to respect that.
Roddick is declining as we speak...still a huge serve but my father could play with him from the baseline. I hope he still has some big wins in him.

yeah, it isn't as if Roger has never beat Rafa in a GS final, oh wait...

you're just trying to find an excuse to diminish Roger's accomplishments, I don't even like Roddick but the guy made it to #1 in the world, same as Hewitt, same as Safin and Roger took all of them down, of course they are not up to Rafa's level but saying that he only beat mugs in a GS final is simply stupid.

tennis existed after 2001 and before 2005, you know?

Bad news for Roddick haters.

Wimbledon 2011: Andy Roddick not quitting despite Feliciano López loss. (http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2011/jun/24/wimbledon-2011-andy-roddick-feliciano-lopez)

Andy Roddick enjoyed his customary tęte-ŕ-tęte with the press here but that was about all the No8 seed enjoyed as he was beaten 7-6, 7-6, 6-4 by Feliciano López of Spain in the third round. Having gone out in the fourth round last year it is another blow to the American's hopes of one day winning the title. Given that he turns 29 in August, time is hardly on his side.

Three-times the runner-up and never the champion, the American was out-aced 28 to 23, out-passed and simply outplayed. He admits he has not played well for more than a year now but, ever the optimist, he believes things can get better. "I don't think I've played my best since probably April of last year," Roddick said. "I think I can improve. Have I over the last year? Probably not. I've been up against some stuff. But it has to get better, there's no doubt."

Last year's defeat by Lu Yen-hsun of Taipei was the low point of Roddick's year but even though Friday's result was a round worse, he said it was not as difficult to cope with. "He beat me," Roddick said. "It's easier for me to walk out of here and move forward than, let's say, 2008 where I lost to [Janko] Tipsarevic and I felt like I completely choked or last year where I had a million opportunities and kind of gave it away. Those are tougher to take now, I think."

Roddick had won all seven of his previous meetings with López, now ranked 44 but who has been inside the top 20. The left-hander is one of the streakier players around but when it all gels, as it did against Roddick, he is world class. López played two superb tie-breaks to take command and then an early break in the third was enough to seal victory and a fourth-round clash with Gaël Monfils of France or the Pole, Lukasz Kubot.

"I have probably played like shit in third rounds and won before, too," Roddick said. "The thing you guys have to understand is there's no script. Some days you're going to play well and lose and some days you're going to play like crap and win. What do you do? You keep moving forward until you decide to stop. At this point I've not decided to stop so I'll keep moving forward."

Roddick's next assignment will be next month against Spain, and probably López again, in the quarter-finals of the Davis Cup in his home city of Austin, Texas. But López will now have to gather himself as he tries to equal his best-ever performance here, having reached the last eight in 2005 and 2008.

For now, though, the Spaniard said he was happy just to enjoy one of his best days. "I beat a couple of great players at Wimbledon in the last 10 years but to beat Andy on this court is very special, of course," he said. "I would say maybe the best. I was surprised that I didn't miss anything, almost. It's definitely a great win. I played solid all three sets. When you play Andy Roddick here, you never expect to win two straight tie-breaks against him so I'm really happy with my performance."

López is a popular figure on the tour, especially with his female fans, who include Andy Murray's mother Judy. Her nickname of "Deliciano" has taken hold on Twitter lately and López admitted he likes it. A little. "She's so funny," López said. "It's just something that everybody knows now because somebody posted it on Twitter. I have to like it. It's kind of funny. I mean, it's OK."

according to this (http://www.elpais.cr/articulos.php?id=48090), google-translated:

London, June 24 (DPA) - Today at the great day came Feliciano Lopez for a long time waiting, a couple of curious things happened before the Spanish play the perfect game in the center court at Wimbledon, the scene where every player to succeed.

In the morning, his coach, Alberto Berasategui, we prepared an unusual cheese omelet. At noon, minutes before the match, a former player, American Justin Gimelstob, the Spanish quipped at a luncheon in the VIP area of Wimbledon: If you look in the mirror less it would be better tennis player, said.

Berasategui, who in his life had prepared an omelette, says he now will do one every morning to Lopez in the house they share in the idyllic Wimbledon Village. And Gimelstob, a close friend of Andy Roddick, the man defeated today by Lopez, searched for a smart way to turn back.

"I think Feliciano is a great player, but certainly loves to look in the mirror. And it's okay to do so is a very attractive man," the American told dpa. "People always talk about women, but he is tall, handsome, good body. Very metrosexual, yes. But not only him, his tennis is also attractive style."

Lopez's game in full flow is quite a sight to behold. I was worried that Roddick was starting to read that out wide to the backhand serve, but even if you can anticipate it returning the ball meaningfully is a different matter all together.

Lopez's composure in this match was impressive, especially considering the 0-7 H2H and the almost identical manner in which he got the first set in AO but then faded. This time he held firm and was confident.

Roddick's approaches as usual left much to be desired and again he looked lost when he was down a couple of sets. The unsuccessful net rushing at the end just summarises it.

Andy wasn't very good, I thought he would still win because of the H2H. Just looked like he was about to throw in the towel in the 3rd set.

Those approach shots were pretty bad, although Lopez in the past would've fluffed a lot of them.

“I think Jon Wertheim is utopian in his thought process. I think there’s a 100% chance that [a player who comes out] would be an outcast and wouldn’t be signing a deal for Viagra or Trojans. But the locker room couldn't be a more homophobic place. We're not gay-bashing. There's just a lot of positive normal hetero talk about pretty girls and working out and drinking beer. Yup, that's what he's said, he's spoken on that subject a few times. He says basically the lockerroom isn't gay friendly and people use gay slurs all the time, and no-one would want to associate with the gay players. Justin has never realized people laugh at him and not with him and no-one takes him or his views seriously, but it doesn't matter really, since he's irrelevant, and yeah, a stereotypical dumb jock.

Gimelstob has often been a guest on the Washington, D.C. morning radio show "The Sports Junkies", talking about his tennis career, his interactions with other tennis pros, his dalliances with such female players as Martina Hingis, and a variety of other topics. On June 25, 2008, Gimelstob issued an apology for comments he had made on the show. During the interview, Gimelstob, a regular guest on the show, said that he when he faced Anna Kournikova the following month in an exhibition match in Washington: "I’m going to serve it right at the body, about 128, right into her midriff. If she's not crying by the time she comes off court then I did not do my job." Asked if that meant he hated the Russian, with whom he trained as a youth, he replied: "Hate is a very strong word. I just despise her to the maximum level just below hate." He added that he would not like to sleep with Kournikova, "because she's such a douche." Instead, "I wouldn't mind having my younger brother, who's a kind of a stud, nail her and then reap the benefits of that.

FWIW, I think Gimelstob is so much smarter than he wants you to think. This guy was a challenger/fringe ATP player, and yet he has turned himself into a minor sports celebrity with all sorts of great commentating jobs and other things going on. How did he do this? By making himself more famous than he has any right to be, by saying something controversial and getting his name in the news, and by knowing when he can make his name stick in people's minds(his last US Open match against Roddick comes to mind)
Smart guy.
