Wimbledon R2: [7] Ferrer def. [LL] Harrison 6-7(6) 6-1 4-6 6-3 6-2

What a warrior. David came out aggressive, focused, intense and ready and Ryan couldn't match the energy. Experience was the big difference here. David served very well today in comparison to yesterday, he came to the net a lot and he simply took the match over.

Ryan will learn from this experience in how to really behave and have the mentality of a top-flight professional at all times.

Too good Ferrer.

Harrison didn't cope with the overnight very well I think. Maybe a bit stiff today.

Good stuff Ferrer though. In a lot of ways he was outmatched here, but used all his game to find the way to win.

Ryan choked terribly in the final set. I saw this coming. :( . Why Ryan?
By the way Ferrer's alucky bastard, his forehands hit the edges of the lines even when he was out of position. :( Terrible ending today.

Harrison just couldn't get into it today. Could barely get a first serve in, lots of unforced errors. Showed how inconsistent he is and why he can almost lose to someone barely ranked top 500. Ferrer on the other hand was totally focused and knew what he had to do. Even though he too had a small hiccup at the start of the fifth, it was not enough for the fifth set to be close. Too bad that it had to end this way after yesterday's amazing quality.

Ryan basically played as badly as humanly possible today :tape:
He has always been a slow starter, but you can't afford that when the start is a 5th set. I mean you can't break yourself twice and expect to beat Ferrer in a 5th set. Terrible wasted opportunity here because this was a winnable match, but then again he was a LL so it was all house money anyway.

This was a wasted opportunity and quite frankly, he was the better player in the match. But he was also the worst player in the match, if that makes sense. The lows were too low and didn't make up for his highs. Too many mistakes, and simply not focused enough and also a little too immature. But he's young, and he's learning, and all of this will help him in the future.

Wasted opportunity for Ryan. He started the 4th set terribly yesterday not to mention the 2nd.

Okay, for how many years you all will call Dimitrov and Ryan very young?
I love both, but they are not youngsters anymore.

Ryan does need to gain a bigger weapon to take his game to the next level. He's very similar to Roddick right now with a bit more aggression and less slice BH and dinking of the ball, but he doesn't have the focus nor serve of Roddick. He's talented, but he's also overrated a bit currently.

Yes, he's still young, Ryan is like 18, Grigor is like 19 (I think I'm right, just guessing). For both of them, this is their first year playing ATP events consistently. So expecting them to be world beaters off the bat is not fair to them. This is a hard sport, it takes time to get your groove and figure out what kind of player you are, how to beat other ATP professionals and how to be a professional yourself.

Expectations of both are insane right now, we all need to take a step back and remember they are still kids.

If you would check wikipedia or ATP....then you'd know that Ryan is 19 and Dimitrov is 20. It's common knowledge...never mind. Btw since when 20 year olds are kids? Not in tennis at least...

I agree with flyboy(:p) that Ryan's too overrated right now.
He has excellent potential, but he's still a young player, and nowhere is this more pronounced then in his mentality. He has a lot of growing up to do, tour-wise, go through the disappointments and the hard losses and all.
He should be a force to be reckoned with when he comes out of that phase. :worship:

Congrats to Ferrer though, looking forward to Ferrer-Tsonga/Gonzalez.

IMO Harrison will never be a star. There is nothing special in his game or his character on court. No spark that makes you think he could be world class.

Yeah. For jerks like federersmate, the only stars are top 3. That's nonsense. I don't like Ferrer very much, but he is definetely one of the best players in the last couple of years. It says a lot.

He's been in the top 10 for the last 5 years. That's pushing above his weight. He doesn't belong there. Esp when there are much better players ranked below him

All he does is hit it back. His forehand is ordinary, actually all his shots are ordinary. He stands 5 meters behind the baseline grunting and being a pest. He doesn't play to win rather to avoid losing. He's not even remotely close to being world class. You know why he's always pushed to the outside courts as a top 10 player?, you know why his matches are always empty?. It's because he's ordinary.

Ordinary compared to whom? Just because he doesn't consciously entertain the audience doesn't mean he's not one of the best tennis players out there right now. A tennis player's value is the sum of all their traits, not just the few that you pick and choose to look at.

Harrison had a night to sleep on it, and completely laid an egg today. As good as he was yesterday, he was just as bad today. Hopefully a learning experience that he will be better off for in the end, as the talent and tennis IQ are certainly there.
