DGT was excellent for a set and a half, then the great backhand was making more errors. Murray had a relaxing last 2 sets.

Murray stepped up his game after losing the first set. Daniel was completely controlling play for the first set and a half with the forehand, but his returning and his backhand really aren't good enough at all and then he got injured. He did show flashes, though, so hopefully he can translate that when he returns on clay.

Also hopefully the injury situation won't be an issue for Daniel.

The final two games were perfection from Andy.

3 return winners and an unreturnable return to break. Then an ace, a baseline volley, an unreturnable serve and a cracking point finished by a drop shot on the run to seal the deal. Great stuff.

Great match, great win.

So he plays on after having a muscle problem he is a mug, then he retires wah wah he should have played out at the match.

Probably should have retired, but DGT took the consequences of the decision.

Some worrying signs for rational Murray fans, once again he looked pretty incapable of wrestling control of a match away from someone playing well and had to instead wait on their level to drop.

Shame about the injury for DGT turning the last 2 sets into a farce, though I guess he at least played it out and didn't bail on the crowd which was nice of him.

Murray needed a little longer to get warmed up so it seemed, that and DGT playing out of his mind for the first set. He couldn't keep it up though and paid the price. Comeplete domination from Murray in the last two sets. He looked more comfortable and relaxed as the match went on.

Good on Gimeno-Traver for playing on when most would drop their dingdongs and throw in the towel. Dropping a set early is a non-issue.. in fact it might turn out to be a good thing later on.

DGT played lights-out tennis for the first set and a couple more games, then plunged back to a more expected level of playing - which also had a lot to do with Muzza finally awakening from his post-Queens hibernation, ending the passive pusher rubbish he displayed up till that point of the match.

Hope DGT's injury isn't too bad, it sure looked like that, getting fed two bagels - but of course it could also just have been his tank being empty.
Congrats Muzza, and please up your level of playing furthermore.

Muaray should have finished off Traver right from the get-go (the Scot was completely dominating the 1st set till the last 3 or so games) at that moment he let the Spaniard off the hook and remained stuck in the baseline. That ended up costing him the 1st set. Then obviously he was forced to put more aggression and effort than he had planned to expend at this stage. But then he got lucky cuz Traver's went on a freefall

Maybe you should have watched the match. Traver played out of his skin in the first set and a half.

People seem to have short memories. Nadal dropped 4 sets before the 4th round last year and Federer nearly lost to Falla. Let's put things in perspective.

he was injured midway through the match... the respectable things towards your opponent is to play the match out as to give them full credit... class wise he made the right decision to keep playing (although incapable of playing very well) instead of just throwing in the towl like a sore sport

Yep that injury looked rather bad, and his scores thereafter also do...
As much as it is honourable to finish the match when injured, I rather not see players aggrevating their injuries even more by doing so. I wouldn't have begrudged DGT if he would have retired.

For a set and a half Murray looked like an inferior version of Gimeno-Traver. Then, to Murray's relief, the Spaniard's groundies finally started falling apart and, since he had no serve to carry him on, the last two sets became a formality. Pretty much the story of 80% matches involving world No.4.

Odd match. From the start Murray looked the better player - his first for service games were formalities and DGT's went to deuce or 30-30. However, towards the end of the first set DGT started playing some of the best tennis I've seen from him in a long time (I guess since Valencia) which was good enough against Murray's negative mediocrity.

I think DGT might have got injured fairly early on in the match after a slip and aggravated it again with another slip in the second set. Even so, Murray changed up a few gears in the 3rd and 4th sets and would have comfortably beaten Gimeno-Traver even if he had not a niggling injury.

Murray was toying with DGT in the end and it was uncomfortable yet strangely fascinating to watch. I did feel sorry for him. Whatever he did to his knee was hopefully not a big injury but maybe a very slight sprain which was causing him just a little bit of discomfort, enough for him to carry on playing. Understandably he wasn't pushing himself as much to chase balls down as he didn't want to make it worse or slip again and do more damage.

It is, however, annoying that Murray has to have a weakened opponent to start playing his best tennis!

(P.S. Murray is now one bagel away from joining my bagels thread! WOO WOO WOO!)

Gimeno-Traver was excellent for the first set and a half. Then, he had that bad service game in the second where he was broken and went to pieces from there. I don't know if his injury was affecting him or he just lost it but Murray stepped it up. Anyway, he's through in the end though and that is all that matters.

was there... good match from murray who had to, it seemed, just hang with a redlining opponent and then simply let the scoreboard pressure do the work... which it eventually did, breaking at 4-3 up in the 2nd and not losing another game...

finding the secret to get free when it's close and not just when he is comfortably ahead or genuinely chasing is the magic elixir...

Love how players when they to lose grip of a match that they start faking injuries and calling for medical timeouts to try and disrupt a opponent's flow serving for the set. Nadal did it against Fed at the RG final and DGT also did the same. Disgrace and almost just as bad as Fognini.

DGT wasn't faking. The guy is a grass court gimp of the highest order, him winning a set on grass counts a win. The Fog still hasn't played since RG. Faking for 3 weeks is pretty impressive.

One slam won't make him widely talked about. He'll get alot more attention in Britain and that's about it. The guys with 26 grand slams between them will continue to get the attention worldwide.
