"Andy [murray] is as close as you can get to winning a slam – there is nothing missing from his game."

Maybe when Rafa, Djoker or Roger retire he will, oh wait...

That statement could definitely be interpreted in two ways, one; that Andy's really completed his evolution as a player and it's no way but up from here, and two: that this is as good as it gets for him.
I'd like to see the context before I can judge properly.

Murray does have the game to beat anyone. He just hasn't been able to keep it together mentally for an entire Slam yet.

yes, i do

murray should beat nadal in the semis in wimby this year, if nadal makes it that far of course. in the final, he should face federer and i think he's got a good shot at beating him.

yeah, Murray definitely has all the tools. Anyone who says Murray has "no chance" of winning a slam is being ridiculous. He has everything he needs, it's just a matter of utilizing it at the right moments, taking advantage of situations, staying mentally strong, etc etc etc. So far he's come up short a few times, but that doesn't mean he doesn't have the game for winning one.

He loses to the eventual champ in many slams lately! (which gives me a chance to some shameless own thread promoting).

Murray has lost to the eventual slam winner in 4 of the last 6 slams.

Murray has lost in 3 finals and has lost to the eventual champion in a few others. He is very close to winning one, so yeah, he is the closest to winning a slam you can be without winning one. That will change though, when he wins some.

so I guy reaching multiple slam finals can win a slam. Oh really? Fed is just stating the obvious. On the other hand saying someone can/is close to is of course not saying that Murray will win a slam.

Federer is arrogant.

Come on. Try to keep up.

GOAT = Fed
06-20-2011, 05:19 PM
I'm quite confused about Murray. He has the game to win a slam with a poor forehand compared to the other 3, if he can improve his forehand he probably would have won a Slam by now, but I feel that if he mentally doesn't toughen up and improve that forehand to a killer shot he'll struggle to win a slam unless Rafa and Federer retire in the next 2 years.

Murray's main problem though is the fact that he's a mental midget in most finals, and most of the time ends up losing them.

He has 17 titles.

How many finals has he been in?

EDIT: Found it. He has reached 26 finals and has 17 titles. 66%. That's not bad in my book.

Djokovic is 25-13. Meaning before 2011, he was only 18-13 (which by the way, isn't bad IMO).

Almost 30 finals. He wins most finals. 6-1 in masters finals, the only loss being because of the wind.

Yeah, but there's always the last step to take and it's a very big step. His forehand is a liability, but he might end up winning a slam or two. In the finals so far, he's been more waiting for the other guy to lose it, rather than going out there and winning it himself. This is the biggest thing that must change in the future.

Clydey

Totally agree. He hasn't shown up mentally for 2 of his 3 finals. I think he was there mentally for AO 2010, but Federer played an incredible match.

This Murray sure is fun to kick around.

I'm thinking someone could have made millions selling some little Andy Murray doll or something that's British on one side and Scottish on the other. Fans could have had fun waving them or tossing them around the Wimbledon grounds, depending on how their man was doing.

New one each year.......be sure to collect the entire set.

^^^hahha, really? IF** Nadal makes it that far? I like Murray fine and I like Nadal, but it is absurd to think that Nadal will not make it to the SEMI's. it is also pretty 'out there' to think Murray will beat Nadal, Nadal pretty comfortably beat Murray at RG this year and last year beat him at Wimbledon and in that case Nadal was not playing particularly great grass court tennis. Nadal will be a heavy favorite to getting to the final, as far as the title, probably split between him and Federer.

Mountaindewslave
06-20-2011, 08:45 PM
as far as his tennis talent is concerned, it probably has evolved as much as it will, so in that regard Federer is right. but Murray's problem is not his talent, it is his Mentality*.... I do not believe that his mindset is the best it will ever be so Federer is probably wrong. IN a few years a confident Murray who has more control over his emotions and more confidence (say after a big win or getting past whatever has been his mental block) will be able to win a lot... there is of course lots of room for improvement from now towards the future as far as mindset, just look at what happened with Agassi

Maybe when Rafa, Djoker or Roger retire he will, oh wait...

He certainly has beaten Nadal in grand slam play. He has beaten Federer and Djokovic in Master Series, so he has definetly done damage to some extent in great events. He has had tough luck, Federer was certainly at his very best of 2008 when they played the Usopen final, he was sublime as well the finals of the Australian Open 2010, and Djokovic was on his roll this year too. He has faced guys that have been at their/very close to their peaks and that is not easy.

He still has some work to do on the fh, serve, mentality when playing real big matches etc...All parts of his game are good but good enough to beat players like Nadal, Djoko or Fed i a slam final ? Not yet
