Vamos Rafa!

Good start to his title defense! :cheerleader:

Began a bit wobbly, went 2-4 down in the first set, only to win the next six games. He found his rhythm after the first set, and looked pretty impressive to me. His forehand was devastating at times, you can see how much confidence the French Open has given him. The biggest difference between RG and now to me, is his inside out forehand and the DTL one, they were working beautifully.

Showed great touch at the net, wouldn't mind seeing him come in a bit more often after his topspin forehand to the backhand side. And he played with a bit more variety than usual, hitting a lot of slices, serving quite a few times to the forehand side as well. Second serve was pretty poor, just rolled it in, don't know if he did that because there was no need to put more on it.

Very pleased to say the least, even though the beginning of the first set had me worried for a while.

Before I get overly excited, it was only Russell ofcourse, he just has no real weapons to do damage. Loved the two diving volleys in a row from him, and even one on the baseline in another rally  Nice little showman.

If this is what a rusty Rafa can do in the first round of the tournament..... I wonder what a fit and well-adjusted Rafa will do later on in the tournament when he is usually at his best... Really bad omen for his opponents.

Good start. Shaky first set but after that a well handled match. Good experience for the veteran Russell. 35/14 UE is a great ratio. The forehand was really really working today. Vamos Rafa. Good Luck against either Sweeting or Andujar (again). Sweeting second round AO, Andujar second round FO?!?!?!?!

I agree the French did wonders for his confidence and he loves being back at Wimbledon. He looked a world away today from what he did at Queens (except for those first 6 games, but I'll cut him some slack in round 1). Nice fight from Russell.

Decent performance from Rafa after a shaky start of the match - merely a hiccup though.
Russell was enjoying his first - and most probably last - appearance at the center court, nice to see.

Russell was having a lot of fun out there, the double dive point was great.

(There is no doubt that Rafa's only weakness is he's a poor starter, often gets down a break in 1st set. Imagine if he changed that and became a fast starter. His record says he's only ever lost one match [it was vs Ferrer] in his slam career after winning the 1st set!)

Rafa played like he always does in Wimbledon.. he always struggles the first rounds against the lesser ranked players when the grass is fresh. He seemed a bit up and down in the first set but it was strong to come back from a break and then break to take the set. It was a good challenge for Rafa, it made Rafa up his level, and he needs to continue to up his level if he wants to win the slam. His performance today was good enough to beat Russell, but he needs to continue to play better and better. Hopefully that'll happen. At least he won his first match. 6 more to go. VAMOS! :yeah:

A little scrappy (rusty?) being down 2-4 but overall a good recovery after. Love that 74 mph second serve.

The first week is always dangerous for him as most likely he'll be meeting Raonic in the 3rd round.

first 3 rounds are always the danger for any top player.
even borg said this once.

in the 2nd week, the court is worned down and the good baseliners have it a bit easy.

nadal is in serious trouble in the 3rd round provided he wins his 2nd round match.
raonic/muller is the worst round 3 to get.

Why were you worried about Rafa's confidence? He won a GS title 2 weeks ago. I don't know what more confidence a player can achieve on the tour ;)

yes, yes, you are right, Eden but it was FO and still it was more difficult than most people expected. Besides I don't know with Nadal these days, he's more shaky and very different, becomes nervous, even rude, too often and this is something I have never seen from him before. TBH didn't know what to expect from him. That's why a bit worried.

Nothing strange happens to Rafa. He set the expectations really high in him with his achievements. You can't expect him to win every clay tournament and to win a GS without dropping a set.

He always find his way into a tournament.

Maybe his decline has already started as people have said. Even though it's silly to talk about a decline when you have mostly lost to a player who was nearly unbeatable this year. I think winning the FO took a bit of pressure from Rafa's shoulders. He seems to have already accepted it that he will probably lose the #1 ranking to Novak sooner or later. He has so many points to defend this year - same goes for Novak earlier next year when other players have a chance to take advantage of that situation.

i don't see nadal losing now at wimbledon.......this is simply his tournament especially that he won the french and the pressure is off......

Rafa was alright, but he was on second gear, so it's hard to take a lot from the match. I do give big credit to my man Mikey for fighting hard and playing a pretty decent match. Rafa has two rounds for sure to get into a good rhythm, which was all this match was about for the Spaniard, that and getting off quickly without expanding energy and before the rain, and he did just that.

I noticed this as well, fair play to the guy. Always think it must be pretty horrible for the kids, being pointed and grunted at for a towel.

Only saw the first set, typical slow start from Rafa, though Russell played really well until that service game with the two double faults.

How could you forget to include Del Potro, a GS winner and BY FAR the most dangerous 4th round opponent for any of the Top 8 in the 4th round!?

Bah! I've become immune to these impossible draws for Rafa every slam while Muger Frauderer gets a cupcake waltz to the Semis. Go ahead, you friggin' elitists...go ahead and keep giving Rafa "Murderer's Row" every slam. Do you think he cares or doesn't see through it!!?

It just makes him madder, stronger, meaner and more determined. And if he meets Mugray in the Semis or Muger in the Finals he is going to humiliate them with no mercy! Why do you think he has become a Spartan? Huh? Why, I pray ask thee? Because while Muger Frauderer is playing cupcakes, Rafa has to face Russell in the first round, probably Raonic who would take out Frauderer in straights, Del Potro, last years Runner Up Berdych in the QFs and the Queens Winner Mugray in the SFS.

Go ahead, organizers and elitists alike! I dare you! Give him "Murderers Row" and just weep, you little punks, just weep as he knocks down those pins one after the other and gets stronger and stronger.....then after Nole humiliates a weak and pampered Muger Frauderer in the SFs after his similarly unimaginable draw, we Tennis Fans get to see a REAL Final when Rafa and Nole battle it out for the title. Both of them will have taken on "Murderer's Row" while Muger was basted like the Turkey he is, so he could become moist and succulent for a humiliating defeat. Bring it ON! Now! You organizers and your rigged draws ignorantly empowering Sparta by imposing Fascist, unreasonable rigged draws to bring it all in easy as a pumpkin pie for the Ballerina. You make me sick! :o

i believe rafa's just pacing himself and thus played only as well as today's opponent demanded.. i'm also starting to trust his instincts out there more and more so i tend not to panic as much as i used to whenever he'd have a sluggish start.. in fact, after that unexpected 5-setter against isner at r garros, i have learned to trust rafa's attitude a lot more for i know, in the end, all will be ok even if he falls a bit behind for a short while.. i would almost say rafa was actually having fun and playing with a relaxed and confident stride out there today, turning up the heat right when he needed to and remaining calm and collected throughout.. all in all, a great sign of things to come.. :worship:

btw, getting back to that isner 1st-round match in paris for a moment: if rafa repeats at wimby this year, it will be in no small measure thanks to the limitless confidence he gained after beating the american in paris imho.. i.e., that 1st-round victory over isner in paris may turn out to be rafa's defining moment this season..
