Expected result. Tommy hung in there, but 37 aces from Muller is clinical. Gilles just slightly better on serve and that made the difference. Hopefully he beats Milos now.

This is a complete joke without Slam tracker.. we almost need to pay to see aces score :(

Great job Gilles

 37 aces from muller

and..i don't know if they count aces as winners here do they? because if they do accruing to the stats muller blasted 70 winners

big win for Gilles, Haas still has a lot of work to do.

Raonic/Muller might hit 100 aces combined in their match

if gills and mills serve like they did today then...we may have another marathon match on our hands

It is always good to see Muller playing well. One of most interesting matches of R1 on court (only one?) without tv coverage.

37 aces to 2 DFs and 70 winners. :worship:

The 29% BPC is Federeresque though, and will cost him against Raonic, who was almost 70% against Gicquel today. :scared:

Rd2 will likely be a looong match.

Nice one Gilles. No show Raonic how to serve.

37 aces

I thought it would be Gilles in 4, Haas has struggled with Muller before and he isn't the easiest opponent when you've played one or two matches in the last year

Muller-Raonic will be interesting

Annoying to see two decent grasscourters against each other in the first round, considering all the mugs matches around.

easily known from Roddick matches - if winners > aces, then they count as winners

Since nobody watched it and I know someone who did, I'll shamelessly copy.

First I went to watch Tommy Haas vs. Gilles Muller at court 19.

Pretty rough start for both, but then the match got better and better. Both pretty clutch under pressure. They arrived to tiebreak with no breaks of serve. Tiebreak didn't change the flow. Both won all their points on serve until Haas had to serve *5-6, and Muller hit an insane return that gave him the set.

Of course I was cheering for Gilles Muller, and of course I was the only one. It was probably one of the most annoying experiences I've had on a tennis tournament. A group of two girls and two boys were standing besides me watching too, they had absolutely no idea of tennis. Some of the stuff they spitted out:

Stupid Girl A: (After Muller hits 2 aces in a row in opening game), "Wow, who is this guy? Where did he come out to hit 2 aces in a row?"

After some games go past and I am cheering for Muller, the fat guy of the group starts cheering for Haas, and it turned into almost a battle of who cheered harder, him or me. Then the whole group of US citizens started to cheer for Haas.

At 4-3, Stupid Girl B asks: "Which one is Tommy Haas?"

During the tiebreak I started celebrating higher and higher every point, same did them. When he won the set I jumped, celebrated, and made a fist pump.

The whole court was cheering for Haas in an unbelievable way for him being a foreigner and a semi retired player. Two guys, one with red ketchup hair had big plastic hands with the "I Like" of Facebook, and after Haas won a point they clapped their hands with that. Probably the people there knew Haas from Virtua Tennis, and not from real tennis.

I went around to the other courts for some minutes, came back for 3-3 in the second set. Haas broke at 4-4 in an awful game of Muller. He was then serving 40-15 and Muller played 3 insane points in a row, especially the one at deuce with a supreme lob. He took the tiebreak then easily.

Third set was pretty much like the ones before until Muller played a bad game again and lost the set. I was then too annoyed with the fans so I had to leave to watch other matches.http://www.tennisalternative.com/wimbledon-2011-day-1-report-rn704.html

Haha, good post.

I remember watching Bolelli v Bogdanovic on an outside court at Wimbledon.

I could hear the people next to me saying 'oh, he's a great player... I think he's top 10 or top 5'...

I was thinking what the fuck are they talking about...

They thought Bogdanovic was Djokovic.

I didn't have similar experiences from the slams, but it's been always horrible at Polish tournaments with the VIPs. I accidentally sneaked to a VIP stand during the Sopot tournament and was cheering on Monfils with my friends, and some very well dressed ladies noticed we must be kinda into tennis so they started asking us about basic rules, like when does the set end, how many points are in the game etc. when is it possible to clap, which player should we cheer on etc. Later they really felt the spirit and got totally engaged, it was fun :D

Or another time when in the middle of the second set some VIPs behind me started arguing which player was Polish and for which they should clap (Kubot-Clemens)

that spectator probly celebrated more enthusiastically than gilles himself
