There has been some news about this tournament. I know it's early, but I thought we should start a thread :)
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2004/tennis/10/04/CA.trophy.ap/index.html
Vienna: Nalbandian becomes top seed, Moya out

VIENNA, Austria (AP) -- With Spain's Carlos Moya surprisingly withdrawing from the CA Trophy tennis tournament starting next week, organizers moved Argentine David Nalbandian up to top seed on Monday.

"After Carlos Moya had to pull out with a shoulder injury, we decided to put David (to the) top," event organizer Peter Feigl said.

Nalbandian was placed ahead of Chile's Nicolas Massu. Massu, the 2004 Olympic champion, will celebrate his 25th birthday on the opening day of the tournament, which runs from Oct. 10-17.

The world's top-ranked player, Roger Federer of Switzerland, will not be able to defend his title in Vienna for a third consecutive time as "he is traveling to Asia for his sponsors at that time of year," Feigl added.

Tim Henman, who was part of Britain's failed bid to remain in the Davis Cup World Group when it lost a playoff tie on Austrian soil, is ready to fill Federer's shoes, according to Feigl.

"We would like to have Tim play instead of Roger. Henman made a great impression last year and told us, he wanted to come back," Feigl said.

In 2003, Henman reached the semifinals, losing to Moya in two close sets.

Other seeded players are Germany's Australian Open finalist, Rainer Schuettler (3), Spaniard Tommy Robredo (4), Argentina's Juan Ignacio Chela (5), Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand (6), Guillermo Canas (7), also of Argentina, and Czech Jiri Novak (8).

I'm so excited about going here - my first "live" tournament for 4 months :) It would be exciting to see David as Number 1 there (never been to a tournament where he is Number 1 before!), but I will enjoy it just as much whether he is Number 1 or 2. VAMOS DAVID.

it seems moya got the should injury when playing DC semi, and he wants to recover completely before madrid, which he focuses on winning his second TMS this year. so it will be a tight schedule for david with 5 weeks non-stop playing until the end of the year: japan, vienna, madrid, basel and paris. but vienna is worth looking forward to :) also that means there should be a tight tennis trip schedule for Rosie  so, enjoy them!!!

also good luck to willy and jiri, it's so nice to see your names again in the vienna entry list :D

Here is the Vienna draw. Can't say I like that possible 2nd round match-up with Koubek - he is the local boy who will have the whole crowd on his side - not so good for David if his confidence is low  Also Koubek was awesome in his matches against Britain in the Davis Cup the other week - he virtually took Austria to the World Group single handed  Ah well - hope David will do well - if not - I'll be in Madrid earlier than expected!!!!!

Thanks for the vienna draw, rosie!! but i don't like it any way  second round vs koubek in Austria? no, i can't see he can pass that  and even if he passed koubek, who will wait for him? Dent or Canas? no, it's a pretty tough draw.
When a player comes back from long time injury, he will have to face many early rounds out, look at marat's end of 2003, and tommy haas's beginning of this year. It will be long time to get the coming back feeling as a inescapable process, may be several months, maybe half to one year. This is the crucial time for him. We all can stand it, and i just hope he also has the patience to stand it.

Good luck in Vienna, david!!

There is an article on Austrian site about David:
(Sorry, in German but easy to understand):

Wiens Nummer eins - Ein Spieler ohne Grenzen

http://www.sport1.at/coremedia/generator/property=original/id=2739296.jpg

Nalbandian kennt kein Nachlassen

http://www.sport1.at/pub/catennistrophy/German/spieler/pics/43.jpg

Ok tried to do my best..

Vienna's Number 1, a player withough bounderies

Eventhough he has an Armenian background, is the 22 year old David born in Cordoba a perfect example of the new members of the Argentinian Tennis generation.

But he, the number 1 of this tournement where the qualification rounds start at saturday, of the 19th BA CA Trophy, goes not only to his physical borders, but he alsp connects its efforts with an incomprehensible talent.

Nalbandian does not know the word leaving behind

The number one in the Viennese town hall doesn't know leaving behind in its play.He plays his Forhand with a lot of power, and tries to hit it hard back to the baseline, and his backhand becomes with the week better and better.

The Model athlet who has an tattoo on his shoulder wants to become always faster, stronger and safer. he controls all impacts and trains over and over gain. Besides he takes the fitness training really precise and seriously. His coach, Eduardo Infantino, is inspired: "It very plesant to train with David!", with

Inspired fisherman

Already today Nalbandian,an inspired fisherman, belongs to the best strategists on the Tour.
Each hit to the baseline makes sense.

Amazingly actually that Nalbandian, the sensational Wimbledon Finalist of 2002 (defeated by Lleyton Hewitt) ,won so far only two tournaments (2002 Estoril and Basel). In the previous year he was gehandicapt by a wrist injury, which forced him also to withdraw from the Tournement

On the lines of the world class

This year he already had some great results: Quarter final Australian open (defeated by Federer), Qf Monte Carlo( defeated by Coria), final Rome (against Moya), Sf Paris (victories over Koubek, Safin, Kuerten, defeated by Gaudio) and last quarter final Peking.

Nalbandian who's game what belongs to the worlds best is the first seed and tries to win the 30th edition of the tournment in Vienna

Nalbandian gets along with conditions in Vienna

A small injury at his ankle, who was cured by Prof Weinstabl. Injuries were there before, which forced this year to many breaks for him:ankle, ribs and muscles stopped him from playing matches.

"Eventhough I must win also in Vienna,to aim for my goal ", Nalbandian joked after training of yesterday, "perfekt soil, the balls jump up highly - only the light disturbs in some Situations", he told. Who after his training as many of his collueges played some golf.

.
Hi Bovenbuuf, you could translate for fans this one too
(Kan je doen dat voor ons?):

11.10.2004
Nummer eins will - Koubek muss Dienstag spielen

http://www.sport1.at/coremedia/generator/property=original/id=2746164.jpg

Gigan.. I translated a part of it, the part where David said some words. The rest is the same of the article you posted before, but now they just changed the headings a little bit. so its some kind of a mix of the same words. That is why I didn't translated the rest of it

new is the part about Koubeck last paragraph,Koubek hat gegen Lieblingsgegner viel Selbstvertrauen getankt,

Koubeck got conficence of the match against Muster.

Also Koubeck will have a very hard second round. At tuesday he will face Martin in his single match. The man from Spain, who is 58 in Championsrace is one off the favs to have as an opponent from Koubeck or a different line of speaking Koubeck is the fear off Martin.

He leads with a h2h wit 4-1. and in 2004 the scores where.. (Miami 2/6,7/6, 6/0 Koubek, Auckland 4/6, 4/6).

koubeck got some more confidence after the DC and the Exhibitionmatch agains Muster. He doesn't have any troubles with the ankle anymore, but we have to say that he didn't risked it in the match against Muster.

Gigan.. I translated a part of it, the part where David said some words. The rest is the same of the article you posted before, but now they just changed the headings a little bit. so its some kind of a mix of the same words. That is why I didn't translated the rest of it

new is the part about Koubeck last paragraph,...

Thanks, I did not look on it carefully...

David about today match and his chances for TMC

Nalbandian: “I didn’t feel at my best, I didn’t feel great on court. I did a lot of easy mistakes I normally don’t do.”

“I didn’t play so many tournaments this year, that is reason for not playing at my best today. I always try to do my best but sometimes you can’t do it. I know I have to keep working, I know I have to try to play more matches to get the confidence back. I think I am doing the right things but it isn’t enough, I have to continue working. I hope my confidence will come back.”

On his chances of qualifying for the Tennis Masters Cup
“Mathematically I have the chance. But it’s going to be tough, I have to win a lot of matches. I don’t know exactly how many points I am behind but it’s many points. I think I have to win a hundred or something Race points, so it’s going to be tough. I have to win one ATP Masters Series, but I have the chance. If I play good I think I can get in. so I have to try and keep that in my mind. This for sure is my goal for this year and I hope I can do it.”

Nalbandian doesn't convince in his first round match

Without convincing David Nalbandian reached at tuesday after 10pm the second round with 6-4 6-3. He defeated the qualifier Seppi.

1-1 head to head gainst Koubeck

The head to head is equal, its 1-1. What is a good result,2001 at a challenger in Bermuda it was Koubeck who win at clay in 7-6 4-6 6-4. But this year it was Nalbandian who won in Paris with 6-7 6-3 7-6 7-5.

David shows respect for Koubeck: he is a good player, he is playing in his home country, and that is why he has a good changes. It wil be differenent then in Paris, I have to play better now, certainly better then what i showed in the first round.

So we have a day off in Vienna to recover from my hangover :p Apologies to those of you in my Group who have probably read this before, but here is a short match report from yesterday. David started slowly, - lost his serve to go 1-2 down, his serve was appalling, he made a lot of unforced errors and was getting down on himself and irritable  In truth he won the 1 set set mainly because Seppi got nervous - he is a very flashy player - really big serve but loads of double faults - he gets tight on the big occasion, - but David still needed 5 set points to win the 1st set. The second set was better - David settled down - seemed happier with himself - he had most of the crowd support. The Koubek match will be hard - the crowd were going crazy for him last night - if it is an evening match they will have had a few beers as well which won´t help - I think I´ll have some too in order to combat them :p David is fine and practicing this morning (Wednesday) - he knows the Koubek match will be hard - just do the best that he can do.

Now it´s time for more Sacher Torte and some sleep!!

ok I found an article its in german will translate it in parts!

---

Koubeck wants to take revenge at Parais. Nalbandians goal is Houston

At the 19the BA CA trophy at Thursday the match between Koubeck and David Nalbandian, number 1 seed, will be a match high expectations.

The goals are high:Nalbandian wants to win his first tournement of this year, and also wants to be at the best 8 players the end of the year what allowes him to be in Houston.

bovenbuuf
10-13-2004, 12:17 PM

-----
Koubeck wants to win aswell and use all the changes he gets at this tournement, to get a better form. Koubeck:" the top 70 is a small possibility, but the top 80 is possible"

Stefan Koubeck:" and I also didn't take the changes that I've had already" and he wants to make them this time, and wants to play better.ALso he thinks the the form is better then he had in Paris.Especially when it comse to his serve, Nalbandian will get more problems with that.

I found a quote in Clarin:
"It was weird because sometimes I couldn't see the ball very well and I made a lot of easy mistakes. I trained well, but I didn't feel the ball well on my racquet, maybe it's because of the red surface of the court"

bovenbuuf
10-13-2004, 12:25 PM

----

The number 1 seed has starting troubles

In his match against Martin Koubeck played very well

Nalbandian made a lot of errors against the qualifier Seppi. " The balls didn't came off the racket properly," is the opinion of the Argentinian." but at thursday its another day and another match!"

Love to all

Rosie (in Vienna)
Good to see you're having a good time, Rosie. :wavey: :) Good luck in you're combat against the other fans. ;) He'll need to get off to a better start against Koubek. Koubek doesn't have a particualarly big serve, so he should be able to break him. Its all down to how his own serve holds up.

How come you were having heart attacks and strokes - I´m the one suffering "live" LOL!!!!! Not so sure Europosrt will show David´s match tonight. They finished at 7.00pm last night - I was watching Schuettler from my Hotel room. Tonight will be scary - I think there will be just 2 people there supporting David - me and his coach :p Should be vastly outnumbered

david won from Koubeck, he did it in 62, played a very good first set. and then he had some troubles, he couldn't end it so needed 3 matchpoints but finaly did it in the tiebreak.

so final score 62, 76

He has to face Canas now, h2h is 2 0 for David

What they saying:

David Nalbandian:

“It was very tough today, I started playing very well in the beginning. I had many chances to finish the matches quicker. In the end it was a little difficult in the tie-break. I played and served well in the tie-break” About playing Canas in the quarterfinals “It’s going to be a tough match, he is playing good with a lot of confidence. He won a tournament two weeks ago so he is playing well. But today I felt very good on the court and I will try to win tomorrow.”

TOMORROW PREVIEW

Fellow Argentines David Nalbandian and Guillermo Canas will meet for the third time in their careers on Friday in the quarterfinals of the BA-CA Tennis Trophy in Vienna. Canas has won 20 of his past 22 matches. Nalbandian, currently 11th in the INDESIT ATP 2004 Race, is hunting valuable Race points in his quest to qualify for Tennis Masters Cup Houston.

Go, David , win next!

Eurosport:

Top seed David Nalbandian held off a spirited late challenge by Stefan Koubek to reach the quarter-finals of the Vienna Trophy on Thursday. The Argentine eventually won 6-2 7-6, but was forced to save a set point after appearing to be well in control of his match against the Austrian left-hander.

Nalbandian dominated the opening set with his big forehand, breaking Koubek in his opening three service games and then again to lead 1-0 in the second.

He went on to earn a match point at 5-4 but made a forehand error, allowing an energised Koubek to break to level at 5-5 after Nalbandian double-faulted and then made another forehand error.

Nalbandian then staved off a set point at 6-5 with a winning forehand, before edging through the tiebreak and claiming victory on his third match point.

"I had a match point at 5-4 but I made a simple mistake, and then the crowd was incredible," Nalbandian said.

"But in the tiebreak I focused on my game and played very well."

10-15-2004, 09:24 AM
Nova, I am not so sure bout the 3 matchpoints, but that was what the German commentators said, 1 when he was at 5 -4 and serving for the match, and 2 times in the tiebreak.

so guess taht they were right.

10-15-2004, 10:22 AM
Haas is playing very well this week so if David beats Canas it will be a hard match. Haas likes this surface and it is almost home to him!! As to the match points yesterday - to my knowledge there were three altogether - one when David was serving for the match at 5-4, and one that he lost in the tie-break, before he won the match. Koubek did not play at his best - I think the crowd wanting him to win was actually an added pressure on him, but to be honest, the crowd were fine - noisy at times but fair, - none of the jeering and cheering double faults that you get at the US open. They were polite and non-antagonistic and they like David a lot here. After, David made a speech to them and thanked them for their fairness and said they were a great crowd - which went down really well.

Love from Vienna,

Rosie

yah, bov :yeah: i am not surprised he lost to Canas. Canas is quite hot these days, and david just step to the backing. Both of them did well today! he even saved one match point. but if a match goes towards a long rally, more chance for Canas to win. i can't remember how many 5 sets or 3 sets matches Willy played this year....

and now i more worry about the bandage on his knee, hope it was another mummy part added to his injury list....you know madrid is waiting for him, that's more important.

and congrats for Willy :yeah: i am also happy for your winning! if u can beat Haas, then apparently u are the best coming back for the year!

It must have been out of precaution, I didn't get any notes from Rosie that it was worse, that he had pain or that he was limping. ANd well she was there so if she saw anything she would told me imidiatly that there was something terribly wrong. So just precaution.
