The GOAT debate ends once and for all.

Nadal has shown the heart of champion throughout this tournament. He has played far from his best tennis, but his fighting spirit and will to win have pulled him through.

He had to deal with so much adversity today. Being down 5-2 in the first set. 90% of the crowd hysterically supporting Federer. A rain delay while he tried to serve out the second set. But he dealt with it all as champions do.

Forget the idiots in the French crowd Rafa. Their cries of despair when Federer made error after error were amusing, and their silence after you played a brilliant point shows how little they appreciate great tennis.

Nadal leads Federer 6-2 in major finals. Nadal has beaten Federer in a slam final on every surface. The GOAT debate is over.

I respect Federer and his achievements, but you saw today why he has earned nicknames such as Rogerror Federror, Frauderer, and so on.

As for Nadal, last year I was so impressed with both his tennis and his attitude that I composed a poem in his honor. Never has it been more relevant:

Oh Rafa, you are so great
To see you play, I cannot wait.
The heart of a lion, the courage of a bear
But in every match, you always play fair.

No-one can match your power and strength
Brilliant forehand, consistent length
As if such talent wasn’t enough
You always stay focused and mentally tough.

Speed and spin, touch and flair
Not to mention, amazing hair
Enormous biceps, incredible pecs
To admire your body is better than sex

With a flex of the elbow, a flick of the wrist
You win the point, then pump your fist
Your opponents cower, as you shout ‘SI!’
While in their pants, they probably wee

Your passing shots never cease to amaze.
Your fire and passion leave one in a daze
Forget Roger, Novak and Murray
You beat them all, as if in a hurry

To ignore your achievements would be a crime
You are the greatest of all time
Those who deny it, haven’t got a clue
Oh Rafa Nadal, WE ALL LOVE YOU.

Fed should have won 6-2 7-6 7-5

Monumental choke from 5-2 in the 1st set. Nadull the cheater with his trademark fake injury timeout when losing to throw his opponent out of his rhythm.

Pathetic TB by Fed in the 2nd set spraying UEs all over.

In the 4th set Fed had a 0-40 and blew it while Rafito converted his 1st BP as usual.

But the biggest gift of all was Fed beating Djokovic on Friday. Nole would have destroyed this mug moonballer today.

Great effort from Roger, visibly spent at the end but great effort in the 3rd set. Of course you have to wonder what would've happened if he had won the first set but Nadal came back strongly.

Hats off to Rafa for another title...not his best all tournament but still too good on clay. Looking forward to hopefully another Wimbledon final between these two

He really is the Gary Kasparov of tennis. Hits heavy ball to the backhand of Fed, short ball, then work Fed over. We've seen this movie many times before. No need to change a winning formula.

Federer played a great match in patches. but Nadal was a defensive beast for longer. Some unreal returning by Nadal. Federer pushed him close, closer than he ever has. Federer should be proud of his effort. But on clay, Nadal is too tough. Federer needed to serve bigger longer. But he just couldn't maintian the consistency. Well done Rafa. Come on Federer, you're still the GOAT and you can take Wimbledon.

Great play from Rafa. He really picked up his level at the business end of this tournament and shows why he truly deserves the accolade of being the best player ever on clay. But what's more, Rafa was mentally an iron man (bar the end of the third set).

As for Fed, many thanks for providing a very competitive 3 sets. It's not very often that anybody wins 18 games in 3 sets against Rafael Nadal - let alone in the French Open. Ultimately the missed SP and BP chances hurt him, as has so often been the case.

Roger played amazing but lost in all crucial moments and couldn't finish rallies (made a lot of wrong decisions), it was so irritating for him when Nadal ran for everything, all his moonballs were right on the line:( So lucky sometimes! But the last set was really impressive by Nadal!

Absolute disgrace of a match. Tennis is truly dead. Nadull's high level was moonballing while his bad level was pushing and yet he wins comfortably thanks to maybe the worst choking of Fed's career.

Nice gamesmanship to win the 1st as well, Nadull is a clown and the death of tennis. But we already knew that since tennis died last year, that's the only way to explain Nadull winning the CGS and Fakervic winning 40 matches in a row in the real world :o

This will have been his best chance, to establish a fairytale, a fairytale of beating Nadal at RG. Alas, it was not to be. You beat the in form player. You were up against an out of form player. This was the last time.

I mourn for you Roger. I was never a fan, but I know a lot of my fellow South Africans are - you are after all a South African citizenship holder. The Djokovic fan in me wished that you had lost against Djokovic on Friday, but if you won today then all that would have been forgotten.

Not sure Djoko would have let a set to Nadal, and it makes me wonder if the Fed stans gloating after his win in the SF realized what was going on : with this 6th RG Nadal is the undisputed Clay GOAT and is now only 6 slams behind Fed, will stay n°1 a bit longer and after today there is no doubt (if there was still some ??)that Rafa owns Roger (17-8, 7-2 in slams) :tape:

Federer isn't hurting his legacy. He's enhancing it. 23 Grand Slam finals. Nadal has 12 slam finals. Nadal will find it increasingly harder to reach finals the older he gets. Nadal has only won 4 slams off of clay. Federer should keep trucking. There are more opportunities for him to come I'm sure.

Look, Sampras still is not up there with Federer in the GOAT discussion. However Federer constantly shows mental weaknesses and this makes me consider Laver as the GOAT.

On the other hand it is incredibly he can still challenge the greatest claycourter of all time (now I can say that) at 30 years old.

I never claimed Roger was the GOAT. But all the premature Rafatard GOAT claims are ridiculous when virtually all his success has come at one slam. Roger might only have one French title, but he's a perennial finalist. Cant say the same at all for Rafa in the other slams.

Now whether he's the clay GOAT. That I will concede.

Not sure what was less in doubt Rafa winning or LinkMage trying to start the match thread

10th major, 6th RG :worship:

Match was patchy from both guys, never playing well at the same time, Fed started in ominous form but as soon as he dipped after he didn't take the set point Rafa upped his level and really should have won comfortably after that but fair play to Fed he gave a good fight, and was serving very well at time.

Tough not to be thinking about Wimbledon already as it is so close but Rafa needs to build on this, he hasn't shown enough this week to be good enough to win there and Fed will be very happy with his form going in.

Agreed x1000 :worship:

And today he gave Nadal the biggest fight for his RG Title. This something a fan is proud of. He will be a favorite for Wimbledon. Go for it GOAT

And BTW congrats Rafa. King of Clay really, but this clay season is over ;)

Congrats to Rafa on his 6th RG and 10th slam. He did enough today, lucky he got Federer to be completely honest, Nole would have beat him today.

Roger played well but all his old mental demons surfaced and that was the difference in this match. Not that he would have won had he put away that first set, but certainly would have had a better shot. Anyway, thanks for the vcash Roger. Completely expected match and result.

Dude, you know I am a die hard Roger fan? I kept saying this. Rafa won't do this. Won't do that. Roger will bounce back. Roger will make it close on hard courts. He will own Wimbledon. He will bagel Rafa in Australia. He will never lose to Rafa again. I am sorry. This is all bullshit. I am sick and tired of Roger ruining this event. Novak would have put Rafa in a mental hospital with a couple of bagels today. Rafa did not even play well and still won. Roger had no chance. He had no belief. Why even show up? losing matches to one guy over and over is not enhancing anything.

Rafael Nadal's unsportmanlike behaviour when down 2-5 was just disgusting and so was Federer's choke in the 1st set. Federer did put up a good fight in the 2nd and 3rd but I think the wind started to bother him in the 4th set.

GOAT debate is over? Really? Rafa has only 4 grand slams outside of Paris. He's averaging about half a slam a year outside the French since 2004. Not exactly the best the sport has ever seen.

Well you can look at it another way, of his last 6 GS victories, only 2 have been on clay :D
Federer was too streaky. Handed it to Nadal when he ended the Streak.

Nadal now probably clay GOAT, as much as it pains me to say it.

Shows how poor this era is on clay though as to be fair, he played like shit for most of the event, at about 15% of his 2008 level.

He was up to about 80% by the end of the tournament

To all you Nadulltards who pretend to be objective, look at how much the rain delay for less than 10 minutes affected Nadull. He choked big time and should have lost the 2nd set. Now think about the effect his injury timeouts have when they are exactly the same except can be called at any time by Nadull for any number of times despite being blatantly illegal.

Now think about how many important matches he's delayed the game at important moments and come out on top and you end up reevaluating his whole career. One day people will look back at wins like this as a dark time for tennis, similar to how the last 10/15 years of baseball are now looked at.

roger had bad luck in the first set that drop shot out for 1 milimeter and after that nadal won an impresionant point to break roger but roger play very well and in this level can win perfetly wimbledon or usa open.

17-8 OK? He is hurting his legacy. How much more can we Fed fans say that Roger is not Rafa's pigeon? How can he be the best of all time if he can't even keep this rivalry (?) close?

Maybe he should have quit at 12 grand slams when he was completly dominating everywhere but at RG. Instead he goes on to win 4 more grand slams, and numerous more grand slam finals and this supposedly hurts his legacy?

He is past his prime and still doing well at 29. Why should he retire. The more he continues to contend for grand slams the greater his legacy becomes.

What can I say? This year was by far his toughest French Open, and a lot of people wrote him off. Time and time again Rafa keeps on proving his doubters dead WRONG. Once again, he was far from his best, but he stuck to the game plan and it paid off. He outlasted 127 other players, and overcame a lot of struggles with his game, but he got the job done, so he definitely deserved to win his 10th slam title today. Congratulations Rafa!!!!

Congrats to Fed as well. Despite the letdown, he still gets my respect, simply for the fact that he continues to prove himself at the majors, regardless of his age or the state of his game.

Grats to Nadal fans, you guys have taken a few final losses this year, now enjoy the win :yeah:.

Federer will rue his missed chances, should've really taken the set point in the first set where he was in control. Nadal was on fire in the beginning of the second and Federer on fire at the end of the third.

One set is better than many expected from the old man. If he brings this game into Wimbledon he will be a dangerous opponent who Nadal nor Djokovic will want to see in their half.

Let's see if this title propels Nadal to another Wimbledon victory. Somehow this year I doubt it.

Nadal deserved it overall. He truely is the greatest clay player of all time. It's not in doubt. roll on the faster courts.

And wow - Greg Rusedski speaking sense in the post match analysis. He wants faster balls at Wimbledon and more serve and volleying. He thinks Wimbledon is too slow. He thinks this year's FO was great because more styles of play were on show with some great matches because the balls allowed it. Slowing the balls and courts down has killed the sport. Time to speed things up a bit. Andy Roddick agrees.

Rafa in four, just as I thought. People will scoff but I expect to see a re-energised Rafa from here on in. RG always lights his fire and he struggled more than ever this year. But still came through. That's what a great champion does. Congrats Rafa, on the 6th FO crown and a 10th GS.

And he still beat Federer, playing best ever at RG, in 4.

Incredible tournament win by Rafa. Lost in Madrid, lost in Rome, struggled to get through R1, struggled throughout the tournament, and still pulls it out. Amazing. The respect I have for this guy is unbelievable.

you know it is not about that. Roger has 16 slams. He has done everything. He should have let Novak reach the final and break Rafa's hold on this event. But no. He played out of his mind against Novak but choked against Rafa. His legacy is shit. I am sorry. 17-8... it is shit. It is shameful for a player of Roger's caliber. There is no way Nadal is that much better. But Fed is that much of a choker against Nadal. He should have won the first set. He should have broke in the first game of 4th set. Instead he lost the first set and won 1 out of 7 games in the 4th.

I am sick and tired of making excuses for Roger. He is getting as annoying as Sampras got before he retired. I will miss him but don't want him shame his legacy and his fans like he is doing now.

If he goes 8-100000000000000 h2h against nadal he will have increased his legacy just because he gets to semis and finals in grand slams. You know being a finalist in a grand slam IS an accomplishment.

nadal didn't play his best tennis but during the important points he was inhuman. how was he able to make all of his slice lobs off fed's offensive shots land inside the baseline? nadulltards probably didn't notice this, but that was just ridiculous.

nadal may be clay goat, but he's certainly not the overall goat. federer still is, and in fact he's being punished for being good on clay as well. just think about it, if federer sucked on clay, and mostly only faced nadal on HC and grass, their h2h would be very close and people wouldn't have so many doubts over fed's goat status. 16>>>10. when nadal gets within 2 or 3 then we can start talking.

it's not hard to understand federer's mental lapses during his matches against nadal either. all nadal has to do is pound fed's BH to submission, while fed has to concentrate while hitting off his BH over and over again to find openings to attack off FH. it's a very tough game for federer and an easy one for nadal, not hard to see why nadal has both the mental and physical advantage.

Roger made a tactical error in beating Novak, but anyway a good effort.

Why would he have wanted to give Novak even more selfconfidence which he already had earned in the past months?

Roger is a champion and a professional athlete. I think probably only people on MTF would suggest a 16 GS winner to tank a match in a GS SF.

It wasn't a given that Novak would beat Rafa in a best of 5 match. It's true, Novak got under Rafa's skin in the last weeks but there's a difference between beating someone in a best of 3 or best of 5 match.

In case Roger would have gifted the match to Novak and Novak would have lost to Rafa today Roger wouldn't have won anything.

At least he gained points, played great tennis during the week and will hopefully be able to keep up his level of play for the rest of the season :)

He did far better as the last players Rafa meet in GS finals and even though he lost he prove that the 2008 beatdown here was an exception because the other matches in Paris have been close.

roger in fast courts(grass, decoturf and indoor) should play in sampras`s style, too much serve and volley, I sure than pete`s style of play distrubed a lot rafa because would cut a lot his game with very shorts points and put pressure constantly to nadal to feel very uncomfortable

I do hope Roger goes down in the rankings soon so he will lose in quarters. I am sick of him now :) Roger won't ever beat Rafa when it matters. He has not done it in years. The MTF final no one cared about anyway. And even then Rafa was close to winning at one point. Oh well. So Rafa is going to win Wimbledon and probably US Open. This mug area that is talked up by McEnroe is pretty depressing. Nobody has brains. Murray had like 100 break points against Rafa. Djokovic choked against Roger in that 4th set. Soderling can't play. Berdych loses in the first round. Verdasco... come on.

That's the thing, he didn't play very well even today. If he can't play well at his favorite slam against his pigeon, how will he do when the conditions suit him worse against opponents that match up better against him?

but he played way better in the latter stages (fromt the QF)than at the beginning of the tournament and found a way against a Fed full of confidence after his win against Novak.I agree his game is not back and he'll probably struggle more than usual on grass but his confidence must be back after winning this RG while he knew he wasn't the fave for once given the context.

I was not expecting Roger to take this one. It is Rafas best surface after all.

Wont take any credit away from Rafa, he is an amazing defensive/counter player.

I do understand that by principle in sports, attacking and "looking" for results (in this case winners) is always considered by most people to be the way that pays more respect to the spirit of the game.

Look for example Mourhino in soccer, playing defense and counter, against lets say, FC Barcelona, a team that always attacks. I think 4 out of 5 soccer fans will tell you that winning a match playing defense and counter is bad for the game.

Another comparisson will be boxing. Look at Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Pernell Withaker. Both amazing defensive boxers, but when you put them by the side of Sugar Ray Robinson, Manny Pacquiao or someone like Roberto Duran, who always looked for the KO.. .well...

Nadal has proven that he can beat anyone with speculatio, leaving the error to his adversary, and playing defense/counter.

Does that make him a candidate for the greatest of all time? Yes, because at the end of the day, Greatness HAS to be measured by RESULTS first, and then the other aspects.

Will he be remembered as a gracefull tennis player ? not more than roger or other offensive players.

Kudos for Both players for playing a great tournament.

If Roger keeps this level he will be able to have a GREAT Wimbledon tournament.

This was a better match than I had expected, from both players. Rafa stepped it up when it mattered and never let that 3rd set loss faze him. This may not be the highest quality rivalry of all time, but it is the one with the most history and added to that they both have patches in their matches against each other where they produce ridiculous shots that just take your breath away. Federer played inspired tennis this fortnight but it was always going to be a mighty climb to beat Nadal, whatever format, whatever surface.

Congrats to Rafa for equaling Borg and getting to double digits. You can't at this rate put it past him to break Fed's record; but even if he doesn't he's right up there with the biggest tennis legends.

Wonderful tournament - even though I missed two of the biggest matches (Fed vs. Djok, Montańes vs. Fog :() - and one to remember for a very long time. Wimbledon now is shaping up to be a real treat with the top 4 hitting form at just the right time.

Read this carefully MTF clowns, you might learn something.

As long as Rafa isn't in the GOAT debate (actually as long as all other contenders aren't eliminated and the debate is Fed vs Rafa), the h2h is irrelavant. Achievements matter, not h2h. Also 14/25 matches were played on clay and Rafa is clearly better on clay than Fed, therefore the h2h is very flawed.

Why does it become a joke? Roger beat the players he had to beat. There's no rule in tennis that you have to beat player A or B in order to have a legitimate win.

It wasn't Roger's fault that Rafa didn't made it to the RG final that year. It also happened in the past that the favourites didn't reached the final of a GS tournament but nobody is questioning the victory of the player who won the tournament in the end...

Well, at least we can rejoice in the fact that Nadal is in decline while Nole and Andy are improving and Delpo is healthy and back. This should be Rafa's last slam unless Rogi decides to gift him another one or if he gets incredibly lucky. He's not even the best clay courter anymore. This would have been an easy straight sets victory for Novak had "JesusFed" not spoiled the party.

Look Fed was in his prime 2004-2007 and now that he is "old" his legacy is being punished because he is no longer the best? Don't you see how ridiculous that is?

earth to you. Even in his prime, Nadal was beating him. The 18 year old Nadal was almost beating him. He beat him many times here in RG. He beat him in his prime at Wimbledon. Come on now.

I would say there are more Federer haters in Djokovic/Nadal fans than the other way around, just because Roger started winning first.

All three groups of fans are majority trolls.

Pushing is cowardly, not real tennis, doesn't require any actual tennis skill, etc etc.

if it doesn't take any skill then why does the "pusher" manage to stay in and win the points?

Nadull the GOAT? :spit:

He only wins consitently on clay in an era where you can count the clay specialists with the fingers of one hand.

At least try to write corectly in english you hater. The sport where...

Well. I respect your opinion. I just am losing a lot of respect for Roger. He has done a lot. But he has proven a lot with these losses too. There ain't no way in hell Rafa is 17-8 better than Roger. But all the important matches are won by Rafa. Roger wins 1 or 2 once in a blue moon. But Rafa has dominated this rivalry.

To be fair. I am not concerned about Roger anymore. He can stick around and continue to lose. Who cares. It is just that his matches against Nadal are sooooooooooooo boring. You know what's going to happen. You know how it's going to happen. And you know Roger won't win.
It's a bad match-up for Federer, but he's still got greater accomplishments than Nadal.

Let's not forget that Nadulltards constantly decry Fed's 2009 title as "not counting" because Nadull didn't make the final. Does anyone really think this Nadull had a chance against Fakervic? No way he would win this title against anyone but Federror.

I don't think this slam doesn't count because of that (because none of his slams count thanks to genuine rules violations but that's a different story), it just reveals the hypocrisy of Nadulltards :wavey:

More proof of Rafito's cakewalk draws.

You realise Fed has also only beaten 3 top 5 players in one slam once as well, right?

Djokovic would have made a better final. Shame he lost his nerve against oldGOAT.

Nadal is still clay king though.

Yes, but isn't it nice that Rafa has beaten the greatest player of all time in most of his slam victories? I'm sure you'd acknowledge that's a great feat.

At this rate Nadal will become GOAT, mark my words. He will reach 16 majors. He has more masters titles than anyone and has a gold medal. It is Federer's fault that Nadal will eventually be crowned the best ever.

Congratulations, Rafa on winning one more GS title!! :bigclap: :worship: It is always nice to see you win another trophy especially a GS! I am very happy for you! :D

Congratulations, Roger! :hatoff: I don't know if you are the GOAT but you are definitely a great champion and tennis player! No doubt you are second best on clay for the last few years.

Thank you, guys for your tennis and great matches you two play!! Good luck for Wimbledon!

Not for me it doesn't,I think Novak missed a good shot at the title here, some will disagree of course but that's how I feel. This clay season he neutralized Nadal's game better than anyone I've ever seen but couldn't cash it in because he didn't make it to the final. We can't know how long Novak's great level of play is gonna last so he has to take opportunities when he gets them.

I think that despite the defeat will give great confidence for Wimbledon and U.S. Open as it showed itself in her 30 years old that could make you sweat a lot Rafa in clay and defeat Nole who came exellent invictus.

roger had bad luck in the first set that drop shot out for 1 milimeter and after that nadal won an impresionant point to break roger but roger play very well and in this level can win perfetly wimbledon or usa open.

i`m sure than roger will win 1 o 2 gs more and rafa can`t win 16 gs.

Yeah yeah, if that helps you sleep at night, keep consoling yourself ;)
We've been listening to this crap for years, Rafa won't win this, Rafa won't win that... well newsflash-he's won it all and he's not stopping, he'll surpass roger's slam count and there's nothing anybody could do about that. So Roger can thank himself for letting Rafa of the hook by stopping Nole, hope he's satisfied with the new piece of RG silverware he got today ;)

One more thing. This final was so boring (and tennis is even worse by extension) that this thread is maybe the slowest thread for a GS final ever and MTF didn't crash once as far as I can tell. Should tell you how little people care about tennis at the moment, even on these Nadull Tard Forums :o

Then -- can only thank you for continuing to add to the post count. :hatoff:

Fedtards as arrogant and sore losers as usual. Never in doubt.

Knee-jerk reaction. Federer still can win two or more GS before his retirement... and I think he will won (at least) one this year.

Heres to number 10 of the undeserved grandslams. Nadal played shit all tourney and still, won. Freaking Federer once again dropped his nuts when it mattered. All Nadal did was loop it to the backhand. Pest just doesn't piss off. Nadal doest even play freaking tennis. This has to be for me the most frustrating match i have seen since Federer vs Delpo. Nadal did all he could to throw Roger off his rhythm with the time taken between points. He did nothing special here at all. Defense.defense. defense. what a joke. The grunting has to stop. The guys an embarrassment.

Its a darn shame that these two are considered the "greatest in the sport". far from it. Today just makes me despise both even more.

Exactly. A runner up trophy is worth half a slam. So Federer has 16 + 3.5 Grand slams. Nadal has 10 + 1 Grand Slams.

against who did he win those 16slams? oh yeah, mostly against The Great Roddick

Why does losing a close match to perhaps the greatest claycourter of all time count as a humiliating defeat? Federer was always no.2 on clay.

Cause the H2H is now 17-8 (7-2 in slams, last time Fed beat him was probably in 2007)for Rafa, sorry but it's kinda humiliating for the alleged best player ever. And many didn't considered Rafa as the n°1 on hc or grass the past few years but when he had to beat Fed in Ao or Wimbly's finals he did it (and was not far of winning the only 2 times he lost in slams, on grass).Fed was never close to beat Rafa at RG, and his lone title here was won without facing Nadal etc...He had an opportunity to prove that even with Nadal on the other side of the net he could win the title. He failed.
