I'm not shocked. Federer had it in him. Really amazing shotmaking in this match. Reminded me of their USO duel last year. This time the clay favored Federer. Also Federer seemed to be more clutch than his usual choking self. This was perhaps the biggest difference today. Wonder if he can keep it up in the final

Crazy good from the Baby Daddy.

Roger won by making sure two advantages were felt throughout the match: (a) his serve and (b) the clay surface. There were moments in the match when Nole was made to look like an amateur figure skater, such was the slipping and sliding produced by Federer's varied, opportune, patient and often wrong-footing shotmaking. The Man was relaxed come the 2nd set, and Nole wilted a bit at the task ahead of him.

Then Roger started leaking errors in the 3rd set, and Nole steeled himself, whipping fore- and backhands with what seemed like abandon, but was his now well-known zone-ishness. Djokovic was on the verge of taking the 4th set, when Roger steadied the ship's prow (that serve), began to refocus the pressure with Graf-like defense, and set himself up for an advantageous TB.

A meaningful win for Federer, no question. Not sure it says anything about what will occur on Sunday. But it might change the texture of the next six months of the season. Djokovic was ready to run away with -- or over -- Nadal on his way to the top.

Great match. Federer's serving bringing him through in the end. The streak is over, thankfully no more talk of a CYGS. Good to see after all of Djokovic's success he seemed very gracious at the net, I've always admired how gracious a loser he was.

Another Fedal GS final then, it has been a while.

Fitting that one of the great winning streaks of tennis ended up being snapped by the GOAT

Class stuff for the most part, though both players took it in turns to go a bit awol through 2 and 3. If Federer had been better at actually taking a goddamn breakpoint it might have been a rout, but as it was it was thoroughly entertaining and Djokovic certainly played his part in making it a nail biter.

Just a shame we have to watch Fed's backhand get moonballed on Sunday ^^

As a fan of both players, I'm happy with either result. Nevertheless, I was rooting a bit more for Novak because he would've gotten the nr.1 ranking if he won this match...

About the match, Federer played really well apart from a few bad patches and served really well in particular. He'd better bring that serve to the final! Nole played with poor tactics the first two sets IMO trying to ballbash Fed off the court. He played much more steadily and with more margin the next few sets with much better results, shame that he couldn't serve out the fourth.

Happy that the GOAT made another final :). Shame that it's against match-up nightmare Nadal though...

Never in doubt Database Error.

Excellent match from both, but that was Federer's best performance at RG. It's great for him to make another final, but as much as I want to be wrong, the final will have the usual scenario. Nadal won't make mistakes and break down Fed's backhand to take his 6th RG title.

That was supreme tennis by both guys. Even though a couple of times I thought Fed would choke this match away, he pulled through. It has to feel so damn good to be the one to not only end his 43-match winning streak, but put a stop to his quest for No. 1 as well. I'm very proud of Roger. That was a well-earned victory. Nothing for Nole to be sad about. That was a hell of a run he had, and we likely won't see anything close to it for a very long time. Roger was the better player today and he earned the victory. Congrats to both men on a great match. :worship:

Unbelievable match - 2 warriors out on court today. Reminded me so much of their match in the USO at the same stage of the tournament last year. Roger was great in the tiebreaks and fully deserves his place in the final. It would be a fairytale if he manages to defeat Nadal on the clay of Roland Garros but the matchup issue means that I don't think he can play and move as well as he did today.

As for Djokovic - what an unbelievable start to the season. This was a very close loss against arguably the greatest to have picked up a racquet playing like the years in which he had dominated and yet it was toe to toe most of the way. No shame in losing, Novak. He really has been the second best player in this tournamnet so far.

This is what tennis should look like, 2 players fighting for initiative in the points, not this moonballing/pushing garbage that's so usual on the tour today.

Amazing from Roger :worship:. If only he could bring this SERVING form into the final. I know his backhand can manage the flatter shots of Djokovic better than Nadal's topspin, and the pace is to his liking, but he served so well today. If he can serve this well in the final, he has a fantastic chance. I would love to see him overcome Nadal here finally, especially as Nadal has been lacking some confidence.

This was the real final as far as I'm concerned. Nothing better to see on a tennis court than 2 aggressive ball strikers who take risks and use angles, depth and spin and intelligent tactics. Both these guys deserve a standing ovation for extremely high quality throughout the match. The whole stadium chanting Roger's name had to get to Djoker but he played well under pressure, well done :hatoff:

Simply too good from Federer. Stunning stuff I must say! Although it does break my heart to see Djokovic losing all sorts of records he was about to break, from number 1 to equaling McEnroe's streak and to winning the FO for the first time in his career. I'm afraid this will break him down for the rest of the year as well... In any case, I only hope Federer brings this kind of game to court on Sunday. He always seems to lose his magic against Nadal, but hopefully not this time.

The first set was decisive as we all knew, and Djokovic brought up a good fight right till the end. He could have taken the 4th if it weren't for a few deciding points. Would have been one hell of a 5th set tomorrow, but it will not be.

Good luck Roger!

Congratulations to Roger and all his fans. he TRULY deserved to win this match. he played light out (literally) tennis when it mattered the most. Novak had no business losing the first or fourth set, but Roger just wasn't having it. You could tell he cam on court with a champion's mentality.

As for Novak:shrug:

In my opinion he is still, undoubtedly the best player in the world. he may not a have broken Jmac's record, but he's made history for his country and his fans. He's really done amazing things for tennis this year, and I am proud to be a fan.

As for the final, I will not be watching, as I'm not feeling too friendly toward Roger or Nadal (who should have been out in the first round), but I have to respect them because they did what champions do, pulled out a match when they weren't playing thier best. Now, they're in the final.

Good luck to both men, and I hope they give it their all on Sunday. :wavey:

Definitely the best match in the Roger-Nole rivalry from start to finish. I thought Djokovic was going to win once again when he was up 4-2, but of course counting Roger out is never smart.

Novak :hatsoff: Incredible streak and I certainly thought he was going to win, but he came up against a buzzsaw today...no shame in losing to Federer. He'll rebound quick I think and have a great rest of the season, maybe even be relieved that the streak is over.

As for Nole, I think his game was just too agressive. He didn't believe that much in his shots so that he wanted to finish points as quickly as possible. That made him frustrated. He had his chances really but Roger was wiser today.

As good as it gets from Roger. Incredible. His serving in set 4 completely destroyed Novak, mentally exhausted him. And in the tiebreak he stepped it up even more, sick.

And how fitting was it for him to finish it off with an ace.

Also congrats to Novak, it's been one hell of a streak, it had to end some day. You didn't go down without a fight.

This Federer is a scary prospect for the final

I was always a Fed fan but his constant meek showings against Nadal put me off his mental ability. I still want him to win, but if anyone were to dethrone Nadal it would have been the Djoker.

Is this going to be Roger's role now? Protector of Rafa from Nole...

You know, I thought about it, and it made sense to me, that Roger was in a better position to end Nole's streak than Rafa is, and sure enough he ended it, allowing Rafa to keep his No. 1 ranking for the time being. In a way I think they both set out to protect one another........except when they play each other of course.

Tactical self destruction from the GOAT, handing Nadal the RG Title once again and then needed self-believe for the Spaniard to take Wimledon

Oh Fed.... why not let Oldal-antidot Nole destroy Boldal again and then take Wimbledon

whats wrong with you? Don't you feel happy for fed? It was so emotional - just watching the great man after match point walking with a smile and a pointed finger "I told you so" was priceless. Last time I felt such emotions was when Rafa won USO to complete his career slam. Federer met the biggest challenge out there in tennis today at age 30. The man has won everything in life and he still plays with his heart out there against the young guns. I don't care what happens on Sunday - in my books and in my heart Roger Federer is the real FO 2011 champion. Beating Novak here had become a bigger challenge this year than winning a tournament. The world will never see another federer. I will treasure this match for ever. I missed federer at the top so much these last months. I am so damn happy :)

Wow.

Djokovic didn't throw his streak away; Federer took it from him with an irresistable pull. Federer truly brought his best to the table for the first time I can remember in quite some time. His champion's mentality just came home; there was no doubt there like there has been all year. It's only a special player, the special player, that can do something like he just did. It's an honour to be able to be around now and see him play on court.

Bar the second set, Djokovic played as well as he could have. It just wasn't enough today; you can't outhit Roger Federer in that form.

Match of the tournament and match of the year.

The first set was one of the best sets in the last 5 years.

So many things before, in or after this match were and are interesting.

I think rog still had a gear or two to go higher. He was making a few loose errors out there. Luckily his serve was top notch and made up for it. I'm so very happy for Fed, what a win to pull out in the twilight of his career, in my mind, one of his absolute greatest. He was just too good today, nothing more need be said. I feel for Nole though, this was HIS year and yet here we are again awaiting a Fedal GS final. It's why they're legends though and Nole isn't there yet. But it's still been an epic year and I expect him to dominate again come HC, however today belongs to Fed.

Yeah, that's why they were also chanting "Nole" at the beginning of the fourth set tie break.

Olderer still has a bit of fight left in him. On any given day he can bring out a performance like this....i'm just surprised he did it against the hottest player on tour and de-railed him in a GS semi. He needs to do it again to take Rafa down, but I have a feeling we'll see a typical Rafa/Fed clay match.

Rafa is going to win in the final on sunday and it will be in 3 sets. Novak hit him self off the court, and thats the kind of risk you pay when you have such an aggressive game. Rafa is going to play his pusher tennis and wait for fed errors like every other time..

Manequin75

if Roger had not beaten Novak today and let Novak come back from two sets down to win it I think the momentum would have given novak the french open on sunday and also wimbledon as we have seen the last couple of years the FO winner rides the momentum to win wimbledon. Novak would then have completely turned into a full fledged monster staring down CYGS at the USO and made a complete mockery of Fedal. I don't think Rafa had it in him this week to stop Novak here. Fed actually saved legacy of Fedal :) No matter what happens Sunday I think Roger starts Wimbledon as a heavy favorite.

Eh?

Final vs Nadal is boredom and we all know why. And he knows why. And everything.

Do you also feel that today's semifinal meant much more in regaining Roger legacy than enything else that could have potentially happen?

Basically, this match proved who is Roger, who is Novak, and... indirectly who is Rafa.

Roger may lose on Sunday. They say he will. Regadless, he's still the second best player on the surface of clay, and the very first one player in history of the beautiful sport of tennis.

I don't think so. Nole wasn't able to control his nerves. However, Federer simply played better. Novak is an experienced player. Federer was too good. No ifs or buts. No need to over analyze things. You can't win everything, you can't win forever no matter how good you might be. I hope Djokovic takes this as a good lesson.

Balanced and pragmatic. Fair post.

Actually it hurts Nadal. But it isn't that great for Fed normally either. Both prefer faster conditions. Fed's serve was huge today. Weather might slow that down. Nadal likes to kick the ball up high to opponents. Weather takes that effective shot away. I think it favors Fed slightly.

If Federer serves the way he did today then yeah, maybe it won't be that onesided.

The second set might be the worst set I've seen Nole play all year, and he really let the pressure get to him at big moment, especially in the 4th.
