Is Novak Djokovic the greatest challenge of Nadal's career?

Seriously, Rafa has never had any problems with any individual players, even with Federer Nadal has always had the upper hand from the first time they played in Miami when Rafa was a mere lad of 17. Rafa's challenges have been surfaces and tournaments, first it was hard court, then grass, then Roger on grass, then Australian, then the last one was the US Open. Rafa overcome them all. But now he has a player who has a mental stranglehold on him - Djokovic who has beaten him FOUR straight finals. Novak Djokovic might indeed be the greatest challenge of Rafa's career. What do you think? And the spectre of doubt in his mind, the confidence issues, could all be based on his doubts of beating Djokovic, the first player who has ever dominated him in his life...

I think there is the small matter of Federer beating Nadal twice in Wimbledon finals or else Rafa would have been a 4-time Wimbledon champion by now, not to mention he would have won the World Tour Finals and a few additional Masters 1000 tournaments. So far at least, Federer's hurdles have been greater than that of that of Djokovic.

But here's the catch. Although Nadal matured early in tennis terms, Federer is not really of his generation whereas Djokovic is. With that in mind, I fully expect Djokovic to continue presenting challenges to Nadal's career in the coming years and envisage that their rivalry will at least be on par with rivalries such as Nadal-Fed, Rosewall-Laver and McEnroe-Borg.

the question seems backwards.... you should be asking "Is Rafael Nadal the greatest Challenge/problem for Novak Djokovic's success career wise?" ...... Nadal > Djokovic in Grand Slam matches.... if that does not change by this year or next year then it really will turn out that Nadal was Djokovic's problem, not the other way around. some master 1000 losses strewn together in a patch during an amazing streak hardly say anything....... we'll see i guess

people are overrating Djokovic to the max. Why not wait until at least French Open/Wimbledon is done? So far Djokerboy has beaten NAdal in a couple of meanlingless ATP tour events. Until he starts beating Nadal in Majors he's not a threat to noone.

The title of the thread should be is Djokovic the protector of Federer's legacy? The answer would be yes. The Serb has just arrived in time to stop Nadal catching Federer in terms of majors won. The Djoker has always had the game to stop Nadal but Nadal has always had the mental edge, that is until this year. There is no doubt that Nadal fears the Djoker now more than ever. He used to fear the Djoker but only on hard courts but things have changed. The question is will Nadal do a Roddick from now onwards. Roddick got destroyed mentally by Federer that he started to lose to players he used to beat. Will Nadal go the same? Nadal is stronger mentally compared to Roddick so he will not wilt under pressure. I still expect the Djoker to win the majority of matches against Nadal from here onwards, that is of course if the Djoker does not go backwards in his game.

Not yet. Let's see what happens with Djokovic once his streak ends.

Meaningless events? How about we keep only 4 GS and cancel all other tournaments.

These rafatards can really be snobish mugs sometimes. I can hardly wait the final.

I know it's a long shot but if Thick Legs® somehow pulls off a miracle to beat Chela, then Rafa/Toad in the SF and slays Djokovic in the final to win RG of all slams then all bets are off as far as Djoker bulldozing his way to win the next 10 slams.

Then again, I have this funny feeling Roger is going to win his 2nd RG..

That is pretty well said right there. Djokovic has arrived alright, what remains to be seen is how will he stay...

Well have to wait until RG 2012 to see about that. His ranking will then be very telling.
