Now that Richard is out of Roland Garros already, its time to look forward to the Grass Season!

The first stop is Queen's from June 6th - 12th. :D

Our boy will also celebrate his 25th birthday on the 18th of June! :D

And then Wimbledon from June 20th - July 3rd! :bounce:

Alllez!! :rocker2:

Hopefully a good grass court season and as many points as possible, Richard isn't defending anything for Queens or Wimbledon therefore it should give him a bigger motivation to do well and move up the rankings!! :)

A week till it starts but Richard will play on either Tuesday or Wednesday.

3rd round if I remember correctly, but he needs more than a QF to improve his points. So in fact he is not defending anything until Gstaad.

To make semi in Queens, he must beat a top 4 seed (Nadal Djoko Murray or Fish) NOT EASY!
But if Novak and Rafa withdraw (everything is possible), Gasquet is seed n°4 :worship:

Murray might have to let his ankle heal. He said after his match today he was on more pills than Ozzie Osbourne and he'll need to be in top shape for his whipping by Richie at Wimbly . And maybe Nadal and Djoke will wear each other to total exhaustion in the FO final and need more than a week to recover - one can dream...

Since 2006, he only lost against Federer twice, Nalbandian, Murray (famous five-setters) and Qureshi ( grass specialist- weird loss anyway) on grass
Only top players except Qureshi.
A loss against Clement doesn't count because it was indoor due to rain.

If he needs more rest for Wimbly, he really is in pretty poor shape because he didn't have that strenuous of a French OPen.

He probably missed a golden opportunity at Queens because I suspect Murray will drop out to let his ankle heal and one would think both Nadal and Djoke would really need the rest (assuming they both make it to final) and also withdraw but Nadal has been known to play the FO final and play on grass 2 days later so who knows.

But yes hopefully it is a minor muscle problem and he is just taking precautions.

So far there hasn't been no comments from his camp. When he's been injured before, we hardly hear how serious the injury is... etc.

Last year when he got injured in Queens and then when he had his MRI scan, he still wasn't sure if he would play Wimbledon and then he withdrew a day before the draw.

I hope someone can tell us how serious the injury actually is.

Cloudygirl
06-06-2011, 07:59 PM
I wouldn't bet on him getting an Eastbourne wildcard. Last year he was refused one. Didn't need it in the end anyway due to injury but I remember reading a news article where he'd asked for one and they'd said no. I'm not sure he would ask after that.

ImmzB
06-06-2011, 08:19 PM
The difference from last year and this year is Richard's ranking, he is ranked number 13 that has 2 count for something. Looking at last year WC, they gave 2 of them to the Brit players and 1 to Simon. I'm still hopeful he can get one if he is fit.

Some of the top seeded players may withdraw and the addition of Richard could do the tournament good. :)

Well they certainly are 2 different personalities so in that sense I guess it is funny but other wise, I think it's great he's practicing with Djokovic.

I used to not like Nole at all but I think he's grown up and cut out a lot of his antics and now I like him and respect his obvious effort to change and get a new mature/get down to business attitude.

Not saying I'd like Richie to turn into a Nole - like there is any chance of that but imagine where Richard would be if he had Nole's new found physical strength and endurance and just a TINY BIT of Nole's confidence.....

I saw last 3 games of second set and the super TB. NOthing great, even if the set was 6-0 and then the pigeon factor took over for RIchie in the TB. In what I saw Richie didn't look very aggressive, except on a few service returns, his serve was really off and don't think he came into net once, except when pulled in by drop shot from Nalby. Hope he doesn't play like that next week.

didn't see it but if it was anything like the second match yesterday which I did see where Verdasco blatantly tanked at the end to get off court because of the rain then I wouldn't worry too much.

It's just an exo lets see what he does on the real thing.

True, I hope he's in bottom half and avoids Rafa. :)
Draw is tomorrow, hopefully a good one! Monfils, Melzer or Fish in the 3rd round! :D

There are so many unseeded dangerous player possible for R1: Ljubicic, Anderson, Kohlschreiber, F.Lopez, Isner, Petzschner, Gulbis, Karlovic...... Hopefully none of them will draw Richie!!

Then he gets Djokvic who I think would be worse.

But as you point out there are a number of dangerous players we would wish he could avoid so I'm just going to take the positive outlook and say I hope Richard plays better grass court tennis than he has ever played in his life and stays 100% fit/uninjured - then it doesn't matter who he draws - he'll take them out :D

I don't know the format of this Boodles exo, but during the brief period when I watched yesterday, the commentator said something like "Nalbandian is in the "final" on Saturday.

Saturday is Richard's birthday and while I don't think he will party, he might have better things to do than hanging around at the Boodles, possibly through endless rain breaks/delays.

It could have been worse. He has to play well from the start, both first and the probable second round opponent are still involved in tourneys.

Exactly, overall I'd say it's about as good as it could be. He seemed to avoided the really dangerous unseeded players and from R3 on everyone is "good". Stan is tough but would much prefer him to many other possibilities.

I've stopped looking beyond the first round because so many things can happen in a GS draw - a upset suddenly makes a bad draw really good and an unseeded player or qualifier plays lights out and makes a good draw bad. Richie just has to play as well as he can and the rest will take care of itself.

I'm ready for action.

With him potentially playing Murray in the 4th, he could of faced either Nadal, Djokovic or Federer aswell in the 4th so I think he would of took Murray over the other 3?

If he plays Wawrinka that will be tough but winnable, Wawrinka lost to James Ward last week in Queens.

The most important thing is for Richard to play attacking tennis and I'm sure he can have a good Wimbledon!

Yes I agree he won't get past the third round if he loses concentration as many times as he did in the match, but then again Giraldo was smacking the returns back so it was hard for Richard to hold serve, I think it is a really good win to pull this one out in straight sets!

Well, the two times I watched him live, he was playing against Fed and Djoko, so I guess it wasn't as maddening :tape:

Cloudygirl
06-21-2011, 08:37 AM
He was very distracted by the crowd a couple of times. He's curious. I wouldn't say that he disliked support but he had a little group of french fans the one side of the court and the other side were some loud Giraldo fans. When the Giraldo fans started cheering loudly so did his fans and he was annoyed with both. I had a court side seat and was right where he was standing and you could tell he wanted both lots to shut up, he was sighing and giving little annoyed glances both sides. I think he likes support but he doesn't like delays for the crowd at all. He is one of the quickest between the points I've ever seen I knew that anyway but you notice it more live.

If he does play Murray I hope that he can get over that because the crowd aren't going to be quiet.

The other thing that surprised me was the amount he was communicating with Piatti during the match (don't know if you could see that from a stream). When he wasn't playing so well there were quite a few gestures over in that direction at one point i was slightly worried he might get a warning for coaching but he didn't. That isn't something I've noticed him do before really.

He was slipping around on the grass a fair but and looked to be having trouble with his shoes a couple of times but that's because he's playing so far back he's not on the drier line of the grass. I think though he was having trouble timing his backhand quite a bit at the start of the match which was the reason for it rather than him just being really passive. Hopefully the more he plays the more the feel will come back to him.

I was sat really near the court and when he started losing his head a bit in set 2 I muttered Richard for goodness sake will you just focus and then he did :) . I'd like to think he heard ;)

A week off work and ticketmaster the day before (need the week off as you won't always be lucky with tickets on the day you want to go they sell very fast) and being able to arrange to travel to London for short notice is the only way that you can get really short notice tickets without queuing. the ones that are sold first are returns. So you could be any where on the court. They are where people have returned tickets and are very limited in number. You reserve them and then pick up at wimby. They are allocated on collection though or were last year so the earlier you get there the better the seats you get. You go through one gate to collect them so a slight queue but nothing like as long as the wimby queue. The ones that you get the day before are back rows on court 3 and centre. There are more of those but obviously the seats aren't as good. You pay by credit card, rock up to gate 7, you have to show ID and credit card at the gate and they stick your card in a machine and print off your ticket. Simples.

I've done both before.

Applying for the 2012 Public Ballot
STEP ONE
In order to apply for tickets for The Championships, 2012, you need to fill in a Public Ballot application form:

To obtain an application form, send in a self-addressed, stamped envelope from 1 August 2011 to: AELTC, P.O. BOX 98, London SW19 5AE by 15 December 2011.
Only one application per household. Don't ask for more than one form: we will void your applications.
If you do not send in a stamped, self-addressed envelope, you will not receive a form. No letter is required.
There is a separate ballot for wheelchair spaces so please make sure you write clearly 'WHEELCHAIR' on both the outer and on your return envelope.
Non-UK residents should send in an International Reply Coupon instead of a stamp. If your post office does not provide these, please simply send your self-addressed envelope.
The self-addressed, stamped envelope should have your return address and should be the type 'DL' which is approximately 110mm x 220 mm (4 1/4" x 8 5/8")
Requests postmarked after 15 December 2011 will NOT be processed.
We will not issue forms to personal callers after 15 December 2011 will greatly assist us in processing your request if you send the correct size of envelope (and self-seal if possible, rather than gummed).
YOU ARE ADVISED TO APPLY EARLY TO ALLOW TIME FOR QUERIES (IN THE EVENT OF NON-RECEIPT OF YOUR REQUEST, FOR EXAMPLE) AND TO AVOID POSTAL DELAYS IN DECEMBER.
STEP TWO
After we receive the self-addressed, stamped envelope, we will send you an application form. We will aim to turn your request around in two weeks.

Applying for the 2012 Public Ballot
I applied four times. In 2007 (at my first try) I got tickets for the men's final. Since then - nothing. Seems as if my luck on the public ballot has run out with the first hit.

Good performance from Richard, great W/UE ratio!! :)
Richard got off to a great start and setting the standard from there, he also did that in the 2nd set. Slow start in the 3rd, twice a break down but he played a good return game at 4-4 to get the break and served it out to Love! :)

Bolelli is 2 sets up against Wawrinka currently.

Except for the giant brainfart in the the beginning of the 3rd, pretty good match from Richie. In fact he was looking like he had his grass court feel again.

Not good that he still can't seem to concentrate for 3 full sets (maybe he needs some ridelin) but it is good that he has been able to reverse the brainfrat quickly and not let it turn into a disaster as in the past - might not be so easy to do in coming rounds but O.K. for now.

NOw Stan and Bolelli make it 5 long ones...

i dont think so- beat gasquet and murray??? nah...funny the announcer was british. guess they either didnt think much of murray or gasquet for that matter. or didnt seem to know of the draw

Yes, agree, I feel like he could have won this set 6-0 or 6-1... he really lets his opponents hang in the match so far this tournament, that is my only complaint.. on the other hand, when he needs to break or win points, he seems to be able to do that.

This Bolelli dude, Richard is just toying with him.

Well, I don't think Murray has shown his best tennis either. :p At least Richard hasn't dropped a set this week. Gasquet is a much more attractive shot maker, in my opinion (i'm biased of course). Richard will need to play above himself if he plays Murray, because he has the crowd to contend with as well.

Great that he is through to the 2nd week in two consecutive GS's. Well Done Richard! :yeah:

Yes he does have mental edge.. but Richard is much stronger mentally this year than in those years. He believes more.. he beat a number of good top 10 players lately.. frankly, I would be upset and maybe even surprised if Richard will not come out as a winner in that match, no matter their rankings and their last 2 matches. The match, I feel like is on Richard's racquet.

Big difference also, in those 2 matches, Richard was not strong physically after first couple sets.. at RG it was expected and at Wimbledon it was combination of physical fatigue and mental collapse.

Schu
06-24-2011, 06:09 PM
Smart solid match from Richie and yes maybe he should have closed it out a little sooner but not uncommon (even for top players) to have a dip in concentration over a 5 set match when not getting much opposition. He WAS however able to turn it on when he needed the points. He has played 3 matches and not dropped a set - pretty good...

I wasn't crazy about his court position (what's new), could have been much more aggressive - didn't see him hit a volley until the last game or two  BUT maybe that was his strategy - just sit WAAY back and let Bolelli self-destruct which he did totally. He did defend very well and his forehand looked good - actually better than backhand today.

Agree with everyone he's been in about 3rd gear until now but the party is over next match - he'll really have to step it up, just hope he can kick it up.

Cloudygirl
06-25-2011, 12:35 AM
His court positioning is really noticable on the grass because the line that people keep running on is dried out and he's 10 miles behind it. Everyone in the crowd was like how the hell can he hit shots like that from there.

He was toying with Bolelli I wasn't worried for a change, the match was never out of his grasp and he didn't have to work any harder than he did. When he wavered he stepped it up a gear and did what was needed as he clearly wanted to be off court quick because of rain being forecast and he was which was great, also great for me because I spent his entire match stood up and most of it stuck behind people a foot taller than me on tiptoes. I had back cramp by the end of the match. He was very pumped up which I am loving to see from him recently and if he missed something he shouldn't he was frustrated which he should be.

I also checked out his practice session, OMG never seen anyone sweat so much in my life ;). He seems to me to have really worked on his fitness etc and I think it's paying off. He seems confident of his abilities so lets see what he can do against Andy.
