Ivan makes too many errors for him to be a barometer for Nadal's form, much less a test. You'd expect him to bring down the game of someone who's obviously trying to rediscover his slam-winning touch.

I was looking for a tightening of Nadal's game (strong serving, no easy errors, quick consolidation of breaks) and didn't get that. But there was quicker regrouping, better management of the big points. So Ok from Nadal. I guess he's stabilizing somewhat.

His fans need hope that he "pulls-a-Williams" and ratchets up his level over the next two matches. Certainly possible.

OK, Nadal was good enough today to beat an under-par Ljubicic. However, he's likely to have to face Soderling, Murray and Djokovic to lift the title and I don't see him beating that triumvirate in this kind of form.

wow! i rarely criticize a match, but that was one ugly tennis. ljubicic can't serve to save his life and can't hit a forehand. rafa is so out of range and just pathetic and clearly not enjoying it as much. i feel for rafa, i think he is losing it emotionally and his passion is starting lower. he did say it is starting to feel like work instead of passion.

This match was an abomination. Ljubicic could barely hit the court with his 1h BH, served something like 45-50% FS and Nadal was spraying errors too. Burned your eyes to watch it

Only saw the 1st and parts of the 2nd set, but my goodness, what an utter piss-poor garbage! :help:
An ultimate UE-fest from both. Rafa was terrible, no serve, all his balls landing short or ending up as an UE - however, Ljuba Truba was even (far) worse. How he ever managed that is beyond my understanding. :o
Both Simon and Söderling must have loved watching this, if they didn't already die laughing, that is!

You have a point somehow that in the end the victory it is all that counts. Playing beautiful tennis doesn't win you matches.

Rafa's form from this match and the tournament so far won't be an indicator though on how his next match will be. The same was said last year after his performances against Haase and Petzschner, that Söderling and Murray would be able to beat him - well, we saw how the tournament ended.

this match so horrific u had to watch it to belive u were watching that garbage.

nadal was so freaking bad that even his moonballs were not landing inside the court, thats how awful nadal played.

forehand errors everywhere, backhand cant even find the court, 80% of his shots were shortballs that barely went over the net, missed passing shots by a country mile, no power at all in his shots.

not even a vamos to get pumped up, he is not enjoying his tennis, he has lost that passion and motivation, u can tell by his body language.
its a very sad sight to see this nadal.

he looks depressed.

he is not winning this title, no way in hell.
not with that horror form and zero passion.

he loses focus and concentration because his passion and drive is not there.

nadal would have lost to many players today, i really mean it. he was just utterly dreadful, no other words to describe it.

things are about to get worse for nadal from now on.

he did well to get this far in the tournament.

It's fine to celebrate his win, but it's also not unreasonable to care about the quality of tennis that was played. That's ultimately why we watch tennis matches isn't it? To see high quality, competitive contests.

These sorts of matches are disappointing for all involved. As a Fed fan, I wouldn't feel any different if Fed had won today in the same fashion.

this......the more you push him, the more he hits back.......for the exact same reason, his backhand will get significantly better only at wimbledon where he will definitely be pushed more to play aggressively and that is when he will starting hitting through his fear and doubt to improve that backhand drive planting the front foot forward.......

he will manage this french open just with his great forehand and unrelenting will alone.......he will make sure he plays a 7 hour final if it happens to be a bad day but he still won't go down.......good luck beating him in the final.......

Bad match. Ljubicic played terrible, Nadal played slightly better. He got better as the match wore on but still isn't playing anywhere near his best this tournament. I guess that goes to show how much better the top four are from everyone else. Honestly, I could potentially see Soderling upset Nadal in the quater final. He's playing fairly well, and Nadal isn't. One never knows of course, but I tend to believe you are right. Rafa right now is nowhere near his usual -let alone his best- self.

can't wait for söderling to shit all over this clown

We all know by now how matches between those two end up when they are both in form.... Remember RG and WB last year? It's mind boggling to imagine how some people here will hype a Soderling victory to new hights! Face it, Rafa no longer has much to prove on clay, and this year his game is miles away fom where it usually is, and you know it.

Nadal has repeatedly proved to anyone with eyes on his/her head that his quality on clay is more than enough to sweep all opposition in RG, with the reborn Djokovic being the only legitimate doubt. This year, though, his game doesn't seem to be up to it. Unfortunate, but not too relevant, he can still get his 6th & 7th RG in 2012-14.

He was solid at the end of the 2nd set and the 3rd. If he plays the way he did in the 3rd set against Soderling, then he should win. If he plays the way he did in the first set and early in the 2nd, then Soderling would have to be really terrible for Nadal to win.
