Got to be one of the worst chokes I have ever seen vs Nadal. Makes Federes so called choking of BPs seem pretty ordinary. This was some epic choking. In fact I think you need to practice to choke as badly as he did in the 3rd. Or at least have some big talent for choking. If Soderling had done that kind of crap in 09 he wouldnt have won a set.

8 set points... Nadal's record in set points saved. He had to implement his defensive "game A" to win the 3rd set. I was impressed by Andujar's ground-stroke game but in the most important moment he was just silly, you can't count on Nadal's errors in the most important moments. Great set for Rafa but to be honest playing with such a narrow margin like Andujar did today, there wasn't chance to move it into the 5th set if he had somehow converted one of those set points.

Both Murray and Nadal got incredibly lucky today.

Overall if Nadal wants to win this, well, he must improve quickly, because with this form, Verdasco will take him to 5 sets (and choke obviously). Andujar was the one dominating most of the time and bossing Nadal around. He already has played 7,5 hours, Roger and Novak have played 3 hours. Cannot afford any more long matches really.

Disgraceful choke by Andujar, really bad.

Rafa is the GOAT

nadal is not winning this, heck he is not even reaching the final.

someone will knock him out.

nadal is showing zero attacking skills, absolutely zero, just waiting for errors by getting the ball back into play.
he has lost that powerful zip off that forehand.

So stop your whining and enjoy it :bigcry: :baby:

Fed won that Wimby final with his own great play. Yes Nadal had bossed him for spells, but remember he hit four aces at 15-40 in the fifth and then broke with that forehand screamer and creamed him after that. It was his own class play that got him over.

Nole played as well as he's done this year in that final and choked, I agree.

Poor, poor play from Rafa. He is lucky he's not in Nole's section. I really believe that if Nole meets Rafa in the final he will beat him in 3 or 4. Rafa is just not himself lately. I think this new super-fast clay court, combined with new balls is really tough to handle for Rafa. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending who you support), Nole has a nightmare draw and he'll have to play his socks off to get to the final...I mean Del Potro, Gasquet/Bellucci, Fed...it really is a tough draw for Nole...BUT if he manages to get through to the final he is taking it...of that I am 90% sure.

Rafa is lucky as HELL to get through this one in straights. Totally outplayed for the majority of the first and third sets. He is a great fighter with a lot of heart, though. With that said, his confidence and overall tennis will not get him much farther in the event if he doesn't pick it up.

Good play from Pablo. He's really improved his level. Very authoritative, until it mattered the most at the end of the first and last sets.

Do you really think Rafa didn't want to get out of court as fast as possible today, even the more since he's already spent nearly TWICE the amount of time coming through his first matches this year compared to all of his earlier times he played RG?

The sad truth is that Andujar was *outplaying him* in that 3rd set, nothing else. Even more, Rafa didn't as much step it up, it was rather Andujar failing big-time to push him to a 4rth set.

In that case you've been watching a different match than me.
Rafa's serve is about ABSENT, his once-so-fantastic BH sucks big time, and a lot more of his balls land mid-court than ever before. He is no way near to his best level, and this is surely not going to cut it for him come the semi/final.

Even more... I noticed barely anyone has mentioned the influence of the hard wind. In the past, Rafa was one of the very best player in dealing with that kind of circumstances, however, in this match, it looked like it was Andujar.

Ok, on a serious note, Rafa's confidence wasn't exactly SKY HIGH after losing 4 finals to Nole...BUT he is struggling this year at FO ESPECIALLY mainly because FO was purposely sped up to favor the French players, which is fair enough. On top of that new balls favor big hitters/servers as they are faster. Those two factors alone explain Rafa's struggle at FO this year. Combine that with small loss of confidence due to all those recent losses to Nole and it isn't that surprising to see Rafa struggling. Funny thing is, as some commentators noted, this year, FO plays like Wimbledon used to and Wimbledon plays like FO used to.

Not saying that Roger isn't a legit RG trophy owner, but if he had to face Nadal to get his crown he would have never got it. (Just as Nadal would never get a USO title if he had to play prime Fed to get it). When people told you Fed will never win RG they meant he'll never win it against Nadal (and they were right), I'm sure they didn't mean he'll never win it playing against Pigeonling in final.

60% isn't enough against Nole. In the past it might have worked as Nole was not that fit physically, but IF (and that's a big IF considering Nole's draw) Nole gets to the final, Nadal will have to play at his VERY BEST to beat him. I don't think many people realize importance of this year's FO in relation to Rafa's and Nole's future careers. If Rafa wins (especially if he wins against Nole in the final), that will give him MAJOR CONFIDENCE BOOST, which will enable him to win Wimbledon and several other major tournaments during summer. However, if Nole wins FO (especially if he beats Rafa in the final), then he will dominate mens tour like Rafa did and Fed before him. If Nole beats Rafa in the final it will be the end of Nadal's dominance over Nole, and future Nole-Rafa matches will become somewhat similar to current Rafa-Fed matches ON ALL SURFACES. In other words Nole will have PERMANENT mental hold over Rafa. Sure, Rafa might win every now and then but MAJORITY important matches will be won by Nole. I think Rafa realizes this and it is ANOTHER reason why he is very shaky at this year's FO. He knows HE MUST WIN for the sake of his career. It's not just about this FO, or no.1, it's much, much more important than that.

Have you seen AO final? Madrid was just ONE match (fresh Murray against much more tired Nole)...and you cannot determine difficulty of match-ups based on ONE match alone. Nadal is DEFINITELY worse match-up for Nole than Murray. I'm POSITIVE if you asked Nole who'd he rather play in the final, he'd chose Murray. He's not stupid.

there's no way he catches up to 2008 level in one week's time but i still feel he will do just enough just in time to take down djokovic who's having an all time great streak himself......

nadal's backhand will get into decent shape against verdasco but i have a feeling it will really come to life at wimbledon where there's no other way than playing aggressive and forcing the issue.......that is when he will hit through his fears and find his full range on the backhand again.......at the moment he is doubting his backhand a lot and has not much confidence in it.......

i am also not sure if djokovic would be ready to play a 6 or 7 hour final after such a lengthy streak.......either way what a great final would it be if it happens.......

I really hope you're right but he wasn't seriously challenged so far. The real opponents are yet to come.

This is the worst start in terms of form Nadal has ever had to a FO campaign.

I am starting to fear Djokovic winning the title without losing a set. No longer can I see anybody beating him or extending him to 5 sets.

If he has a long match tomorrow and then against Gasquet/Federer, it will be very difficult for Nole in the final. He will get tired. If he wants FO he has to win in quick 3 sets next few matches because I'm sure it will be LONG one against Fed. I am pretty confident that IF HE GETS TO THE FINAL he WILL win it, but I am not as confident that he WILL GET TO THE FINAL, considering how tough his draw is. On the positive side, Rafa is spending A LOT of energy on the court too, so he might be tired as well if he gets to the final.

And here, ladies and gentlemen, is a prime example of why a Djokovic domination is preferable to a Nadal one. :hatoff:

Agree. A player as defensive as Nadal should not be the GOAT. His game is effective but it is not pretty to say the least.

I'm pretty sure it's easier to judge from a match 2 weeks ago than from a match 5 months ago.

And Rafa's backhand side and serve has been absolutely WTA-like. Djokovic would destroy him. Murray is much trickier opponent.

there's no way he catches up to 2008 level in one week's time but i still feel he will do just enough just in time to take down djokovic who's having an all time great streak himself......

nadal's backhand will get into decent shape against verdasco but i have a feeling it will really come to life at wimbledon where there's no other way than playing aggressive and forcing the issue.......that is when he will hit through his fears and find his full range on the backhand again.......at the moment he is doubting his backhand a lot and has not much confidence in it.......

i am also not sure if djokovic would be ready to play a 6 or 7 hour final after such a lengthy streak.......either way what a great final would it be if it happens.......

Well, first of all, no way IN HELL it's going to last 6-7 hours...and second of all, Rafa's fitness isn't what it used to be. Have you seen Rafa in some of those finals against Nole? He was EXHAUSTED and Nole looked relatively fresh. Have you seen Rafa in that tiebreaker in Miami? He looks like he needed an oxygen tank. Thing is, Rafa runs WAY more than Nole when they play...Nole moves him around so much, so by the end of the match he is EXHAUSTED. Are you sure Rafa can last 5+ hours against new Nole? If Nole dictates play and moves Rafa like he did in all those finals, I don't think so. After 5 hours Rafa would have covered MUCH more mileage than Nole and he is definitely not as fit as he used to be.

masters events don't give much recovery time, slams do.......believe me he has come to fight like no other time for exactly the reasons you mentioned in your previous post... this french open is mighty important for nadal and he will make every possible effort to win it......

nole is super fit these days but clay, best of 5 sets format and nadal are made for one another.......tough luck for nole, he's such a great player.......

Rafa today has shown why he is the best player of all time, no one but him can come back from 1-5 0-40 and win the set 7-6, no one.

The only reason Nadal didnt lose the 3rd set today was because his opponent shittied his pants and choked.

He is no GOAT but I fear he might get 7 more majors before he retires which would make him the GOAT. The fact that he has a career slam is slightly :o. As a Federer fan I have to admit that most of the blame goes to the great Swiss. He choked time and time again against Nadal. The OZ open in 2009 :o.. Djokovic is doing his level best to hold back the Nadal tide and that is very commendable. I respect Nadal but his grinding style of tennis is not GOAT acceptable.

His luck is just unreal but even with his unreal luck he won't get that far. Robin should beat him.

Your Nole also got his share of luck in last year's us open final. Was closed to being defeated by Roger but managed to pull through by some chokes from Roger. Tired from the long semi-final match but got one more day of rest due to rains. He still managed to lose the final is his own fault but luck was shining on his shoulder.

It's my belief that the extra rest put the pressure squarely on Djokovic's shoulders, putting him at a mental disadvantage that he was unable to deal with. I believe that had there been no extra day of rest that Djokovic would have won, still riding the high of finally beating Federer (much like how he routined Nadal in Rome, despite the tough match with Murray the previous day). But that's neither here nor there since Nadal won so I give him full credit for the victory.

The rain breaks during the final may have allowed Djokovic back in the match but Nadal was firmly in control....and he eventually won, so none of that really matters in the end.
