Well, if he chose to play doubles, maybe that is important for him as well, don't you think?

If I am not mistaken, they play only first round singles and doubles today. So nobody is playing two singles matches, if that was what you wanted to know.

Moya must play now against Wayne Arthurs, a good double player, big server and good volleyplayer. So wont be easy, but if he returns good and has a good first service he will win this match.
Ferrero must play against Morrison Jef, a player who plays more challengers than on the atptour; That is not fair, he has a much easier draw than Moyke

Carlos should whip Arthurs into shape, no problem. Arthurs is "Mr. All Serve No Shots" and Carlos could employ the same strategy that Juan Carlos has: just keep passing him when he rushes the net. I wouldn't say that Arthurs is a harder draw than Morrison--not that much harder, anyway.

Go Juan Carlos!! Continue to avenge your losses!! ;)

Since they played all scheduled singles matches and are about to finish the doubles as well today, I have a question to people from HK how did they do it? Have they played it indoors? Built a roof in the park? Anybody?

I cannot believe there are no fans from HK here. The penguins want to know what's going on.

Safin, Ferrero advance to second round at Salem Open
September 26, 2002

HONG KONG (Ticker) - Six seeded players, led by No. 1 Marat Safin, emerged from a rain-delayed first round Thursday at the $400,000 Salem Open.

Safin, still looking for his first title of the year, routed Lars Burgsmuller of Germany, 6-2, 6-2. The 22-year-old Russian is third in the ATP Champions Race after making the final at the Australian Open and semifinals at Roland Garros and TMS Hamburg.

Last weekend, Safin won two singles matches to help his country defeat Argentina in the Davis Cup semifinals. He was a quarterfinalist the week before at Tashkent.

Second seed Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain completed his first-round encounter with Austrian Stefan Koubek, 6-2, 6-4. Ferrero, the winner of the Tennis Masters Series Monte Carlo, made his Hong Kong debut last year and lost to Rainer Schuettler in the quarterfinals.

No. 3 Carlos Moya got past American Jan-Michael Gambill, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. The Spaniard won four of his 11 ATP titles this year. He also was a finalist in Monte Carlo.

Wild card and three-time Hong Kong winner Michael Chang, playing here for the 12th straight year, fell to fourth seed Alex Corretja of Spain, 7-6, 6-4.

Making his debut here, Corretja has not played since a disappointing third-round exit from the U.S. Open last month. He had played well heading to the year's final Grand Slam, winning titles at Gstaad and Kitzbuehel before reaching the quarterfinals at Washington D.C. and the semifinals at Long Island.

Fifth seed Juan Ignacio Chela of Argentina defeated Magnus Norman of Sweden, 6-3, 6-4, and No. 7 Nicolas Lapentti of Ecuador topped Agustin Calleri, 7-5, 6-2, but No. 8 Paradorn Srichaphan fell to American Taylor Dent, 6-4, 0-6, 7-5.

Dent, making his first appearance at this event, won the Newporter Challenger and reached the third round of successive Tennis Masters Series events in Toronto and Cincinnati.

Other unseeded winners were Jonas Bjorkman of Sweden, American qualifier Jeff Morrison, Jerome Golmard of France, Australian Wayne Arthurs, Felipe Lopez of Spain and France's Anthony Dupuis.
