Closer than it might look, pretty decent match from both.

Lopez was just horrible on the important points, specially that tiebreak.

It was more comfortable for Federer than I thought it would be.

Good for Federer, no big flaws in the game.

When I saw the draw I remember thinking ‘oh shit! This is going to be tough’…not so much

Solid match, but nothing special.

Lopez just didn't show up enough today, and TBH, looked pretty defeeated from the start. I did enjoy that BP he saved though, after turning round mid-point because he thought his mishit had gone out. :worship:

Good by Roger, but needs to improve if he wants to take on Ferrer and Djokovic.

Decent match, nothing to write home about.

Good 1st round from Fed against a dangerous opponent.

Federers serve was excellent, if he keeps that and elevates his ground game he will be a serious contender for the title.

Very decent, solid showing from Federer, most importantly: no concentration lapses whatsoever. Everything seemed to be working for him today, including a few unbelievable shots from the master - backhand half-volley smash (if that's what it's called) for instance. Hope someone will upload that point to YouTube.
A lot easier than I expected, apparently Rog had learned not to underestimate Lopez. On to the next round, Fedsie! :D

The match was actually a lot closer than the numbers show. Lopez didn't at all play badly on about 95% of the points, just one sloppy serve game in both set #1 and #2, and an atrocious :o TB, sealed the deal for him.

Good job Roger, showing that fixed draws won't stop the GOAT :yeah: Fine tune the game a little bit and you might get lucky with a weak Nadull and a tired Faker :secret:

Lalo`s return game was pathetic. 2 hour tennis match on clay and he couldnt create single breakpoint. Federer had lot easier 1.st round than expected.

Me too, I want to see that point again! :)

Glad Fed closed it out in the third, I had a nagging feeling Feli would manage it, but he was getting too frustrated with himself.

Overall a good start, considering that R2 should be easier!

Given recent Federer tiebreaks, which you evidently haven't watched, it's usually the other way round where Federer plays worse in the tie break.

Not good at all, except for the serve that is. But Lopez is one of those horrible returners on tour, Federer usually holds serve with closed eyes against the likes of Lopez, Soderling and Roddick.

Feds backhand looked awful, worse than i was in other clay tournaments. Lucky Federer has a good draw to get to QF and probably SF, I just hope he isnt humiliated there by Djokovic.

Solid stuff from Roger...this is a slam match so of course Lopez was going to have a bit more trouble because Roger upped his level

Expected. Lopez is a joke on real clay, not the one in Madrid. Federovic served well but unfortunately for us that will only make him reach the semis (at best) to get trashed by the joker.

Have we been watching the same match?

Surely we have, did you watch the match where Federer was shanking backhands all over the court and with 30 unforced errors against a player with horrible defense like Lopez?

Maybe Federer will wake up and play better later, but this was not good at all.

Vida

dabeast
05-23-2011, 03:00 PM
yeah apart from the serve (tho you can't really judge against a woeful returner like Lopez) Roger's ground game wasn't too sharp. Movement was slow, couldn't do much on return games, but then he didn't have over-expend, Lopez just underperformed, didn't show up mentally.

The amout trolling by Novak fans is almost as bad as Nadal fans.

Seriously, this was a very tough opponent for a R1 of any tournament, he was comfortably beaten.

Perhaps I've just managed to lower my expectactions in the past two years or so. ;)
I thought it a pretty decent performance compared to Fed's latest couple of showings.

Good match from Federer. :) This could have been a tricky match, but Lopez never believed that he had a chance.

The draw is looking good for Federer. Hopefully he won't underestimate his opponents.

i´m pretty sure that Madrid-match was still haunting Lopez. Still, solid win for Federer, should give him some confidence.

On paper, a good result against a perennial floater who'd come into the tournament with some kind of form. In reality - well, it wasn't bad by Fed's recent standards.

Just kidding....NID for Federer. Didn't see the match but it looks like a routine win for him.

The former champion will be relieved to have a comfortable win against the world number 41 and number 27 in the race this year. Certainly one of the more difficult players to face outside the top 32 seeds in the first round.

When I saw the draw i almost shit my pants thinking this will be a very tiring one for the Mighty Fed. but he pulled through in great fashion. Even as a Federer fan seeing the (Cake)draw seems like him and djokovic are already booked for the semis especially with berdych getting eliminated

Lopez is no match for Roger in slams, even when Fed's decline is more than significant.

I had hoped for something special from these two, but that didn't happen. Good win for Roger. Bad draw for Lopez.

Yeah it's was expected that Federer will win but it was also expected that Feli will be able to offer more resistance than this. From the very beginning of the match his body language was showing that he didn't believe he could win.
Federer played as much as it was needed for comfortable win.

But you never know, Batman may return.

Nice little round one match here. Roger is always nice to watch when the pressure is off and his feminine side is covered up. Lopez has one of the best games on tour (lovely slice, backhand forehand it all looks very effortless) but mentally he's a wreck. Slightly disappointed though after the match of the year a few weeks back. Lopez played with expectations that he could do something and it didn't help him as it allowed roger to get into his comfort zone. Lalo needed to take the match to Roger, play his huge forehand to rogers pussy bh and make him sweat. roger always loses when he's put under pressure because he's selfish like that. Lopez will be annoyed because he can do better. MUCH better. Match of the tourney so far.
