Instead of trashing Berdych i'd take my hat off for Robert. What an amazing display of aggressive tennis. He went crazy with a nothing to lose attitude and stepped in on serves and showing very good hands, especially on the BH side. Hitting winners left and right! Amazing display in front of his home crowd. The match of his career at the perfect opportunity!

Watched the fifth set when I noticed it had gone so far.

Robert played well above his natural level, making sick winners all over the place. Berdych was perplexed by this and was like a deer in the headlights, didn't try to control play.

IMO this match exposed Berdych's poor serving: First one is flat and the second a shithouse rolled in serve with practically no spin so sits up very nicely on clay... for Robert to tee off and blast DTL :p

The Magician
05-23-2011, 02:20 PM
Robert what a legend :worship: Took command with some amazing winners and revealed BerdBrain as the one dimensional mug he is with some great volleys and returns as well as a few trick shots ;) Absolutely deserved this win and Berdych is a disgrace to the sport. Get him out of the top 10 ASAP!

That was NOT a choke from Berdych. Robert took the match away from him. I knew that Tomas could have serious trouble, but the way Robert played that final set, and really the final three sets, was amazing. Tomas played a great first two sets and was hitting cleanly, serving powerfully, and outhitting Robert, but he totally lost focus in the third set, and from that point on, he lost control of the match.

You have to hand it to Robert. He played to win, he was going for it on almost every point, and some of those winners he hit were amazing. The way he kept his composure and the fact he was the fitter player at the end, congrats to Stephane on the best result of his career!

Berdych is almost 2m tall and doesn't have a kick serve.

That's actually quite common for tall players... It's easier to serve when they're so tall so the technique doesn't need to be as good... A good kick serve is a natural development to a first serve with spin... Some tall guys like Berdych just blast the ball flat so the second serve is actually technically too different from the first to become effective.

this match illustrates the idea that berdych just lacks the killer instinct.......he should have bagelled that opponent in the third set after winning the first two sets.......just one of those birdshit days where he simply could not hold his nerve and close out the matches.......

sometimes these are the type of matches if you overcome, you will most probably end up with a semis or final showing.......

the fact that these many people commented on berdych after this result suggests that they all EXPECTED him to go deep in this slam.......

certinfy, no need to be disheartened and nothing to be embarrassed about.......berdych wouldn't be berdych without stuff like this and MTF wouldn't be MTF without comments like this.......he might surprise us all at wimbledon again.......

That was NOT a choke from Berdych. Robert took the match away from him.
I totally agree with you. I wouldn't call that a choke from Berdych.

Robert was playing great and playing at home was a huge factor. Must've been on huge adrenaline rush. The guy played out of his skin.

(As for Berdych's ranking, seems he won't drop more than 2 positions.)

This thread is seriously lacking in giving Robert credit. The guy was beasting it the last three sets.

here is what Berdych had to say about the game where he was broken in the fifth : "I should have tried to serve an ace on every ball, not even let him touch it. That's the only way I would have played a better game". Robert broke with 4 or 5 clean winners in that game.

Yeah he said the only thing he could have done better that game was hit 4 aces :haha: Unbelievable though, from memory at 30-15 Robert hit a crazy BH down the line winner, then Berdych hit an ace to make it 40-30, then Robert his a return winner off Berdych's second serve, Robert then hit a crazy forehand down the line winner, Berdych saved that break point and then Robert hit yet another forehand down the line winner on the line this time off Berdych's first serve and then hit another forehand down the line winner to take the game :help: Simply crazy, I was just nodding my head smiling in disbelief watching it.

Not only was he hitting the ball with crazy accuracy in that game the power he had on his shots was simply unreal, even crazier when he was off balance on quite a few of those shots as well.

Still, however well Robert was playing, Berdych should of course have taken the match when he had a MP.

Well lets be honest about this Robert no doubt played the best 3 sets of tennis he's ever played in the last 3 sets, ok? But when Berdych raised his level in the 5th he dropped it far too quickly and handed the break back to him. Berdych returned awful near the end as well, I mean when he did have that MP he should have at least got that backhand back into play.

Tomas was playing purely on will at the end of the 5th. He had nothing left and wasn't reacting or moving quickly. Tomas did have focus issues, especially in the third set. He was playing great tennis and then he dropped his level, and allowed Robert into the match. In the 5th, Berdych did drop his level, but more than anything, Robert outplayed Berdych and he really deserves all of the credit.

Sad about this result. I didn't see the match, and I am fully willing to believe that Robert played out of his skin and I credit him accordingly.

Nevertheless, I really like Berdych's game, and his potential for an even more successful career (given his talent) seems massive to me. He has obviously proven himself to be a very legitimate threat at slams when he manages to put it all together. I was hoping that he'd make a good run here.

Brutal start to the French Open for the Czech players across the board, sadly.

The perception of a turnarouned/choke in s3 kinda misses a major element imo - Robert actually played some terrific stuff pretty much the whole match. It's just the first two sets Berdy was totally unbreakable (75% first serve), and hitting the groundies with the confidence that gives too.

I'm still really angry and upset at this result. I mean...how can you lose to Robert? Tomas is miles better than most of the top 20, let alone a journeyman like Robert. Disgraceful loss. It's funny, because even with his Wimbledon points taken away, Tomas is still top 10. Not the end of the world if he loses early there either, but losing to Robert is a very good reason to take a LONG break from tennis. Anyway, Robert will lose soon and I will love watching him and the crowd's hopes dashed. Great thing about Roland Garros is watching French player after French player lose and seeing the crowd go silent.
