Why Gulbis is so popular?

He is a mega millionaire who was born that way, and that makes women wet. I am not accusing Gulbis fans of being sluts, it is just something that works on a subconscious level in women.

I'm sick of hearing about Gulbis's "talent". He had one decent run in his career. He doesn't have a particulary high first serve %, his second serve is atrocious. His return of serve is shit. Sure, he can generate power and sometimes hit incredible shots, but he looks like Dustin Brown more times than naught, just spraying errors everywhere.

The guy is a joke.

Sounds charismatic, kinda Safin way, although Safin at least accomplished something in tennis before he became a fat alcoholic mofo bouncing around with dyed blonde sluts.

haven't noticed him being too popular around here, whenever his name is brought up it's usually followed by criticism (not a hard worker, lazy, unmotivated, overrated, mug, etc)
I enjoyed his run in Rome last year, but he's way too inconsistent. Still young enough to turn things around if he wants to, though

I know why he's so popular among some tennis fans. Because it's astonishing to see how someone like him that has a serve, forehand, and backhand, pretty much a capably strong base game, just self-destructs and plays like crap after the end of 2007. You would have expected him to improve, but like some other players, they start off strong then just crash. Surprisingly, 1 ATP tour, and that comes from defeating Karlovic LOL.

When Safin quit there was a bad boy vacuum i guess and Gulbis always had that "I'm so cool that I don't care" thing going (that some people may like) and it also looked like he had the potential to win against top players regularly but ah well. He might still have the "I'm so cool that i don't care" thing but it's not as easy to be popular with it if you aren't winning and doing some deep runs every now and then. Without that you are more sad than cool and his fanbase is likely shrinking atm

I can't remember if I was reading an article or watching a clip during a tournament or what, but the gist of it was that some people think he's the next Safin: talented, brilliant, womanizer, temperamental, streaky. They see him in that vein and, I guess, they are transferring their Safin-love over to him, or something.

I don't see it, but I don't deny he has talent.

Is this a serious thread? The guy has beaten both Djokovic & Federer and has pushed Nadal to a close decider....on clay. Obvious talent is obvious.

Then again, this is the same world where many people think that only a 2011 French Open is the only way for Djokovic's streak to be valid.

Sadly, it's just never enough for some people.

Gulbis' love comes strictly and especifically from his brilliant hairdo.

Henry Chinaski
05-23-2011, 04:30 AM
he does have great hair. I don't think anyone would deny that.

is he really that talented though?

certainly his A game is superb. but is talent being able to hit 10 shots in a row at 100mph a couple of times a set a la gulbis or is talent being able to hit 20 60mph shots in a row to within a metre of the baseline consistently throughout the course of a set, match and season a la ferrer?

the answer is both, but people seem to be obsessed by the former and consider the latter as something acquired through hard work.

Frm his latest results you can see that there must be a bigger problem?
I don't know if he has motivation problems or what but 2-3 years ago he was just the most talented player from the young players...

Instead of increasing his level to win more tournaments and get top 20 (as I expected) he show us every week a new low.

I really hope he can come back to his higher level.
He has to work on his mentality.

I still believe he will be Top 10 some day.

February - May 2010 was really really good.
I think he is a player which plays good after a good tournament and bad after a bad loss...

He seemed much more motivated in the beginning of 2010.

He is an attractive player with an attractive game. He is one of the most talented guys on tour. Even Federer said this.

Gulbis struggles with health all year. He had to skip tournaments and last week he was under antibiotics again. He lacks practise and match play because of this. His confidence must be low also. Players gain confidence with winning matches. Gulbis can't compete in a normal way, because he is out of shape and he is out of shape because he cannot get healthy.

I don't think that he lacks motivation. He works with the Adidas team. Practised a lot in Las Vegas with Cahill. His former coach Gumy can't travel with him anymore because he has to care about his familiy back in Argentina. Currently he is working with Sargis Sargsian from Team Adidas.

Gulbis is often kidding in interviews, because he finds it boring to give the normal answers. Some ppl are not able to get his humour and think he doesn't care about his career.
