Who do you think would win in a match at the French Open between Nadal, given his form going into the FO in 2008, or Djokovic's currently?

Nadal in 4 or 5 I suppose.

We will never know but i will say 2011 Nole in 4 or 5 sets.

Nadal in 3.

Let's just first see if Djokovic beats the 2011 Nadal, who is apparently so terrible these days he falls out in the first round... oh, wait.

Better question would be "Who is level is/was higher, 2011 Nole or 2008 Nadal?".

If 2011 Nadal plays 2011 Djokovic four times and still loses ALL FOUR i have to say that

2008 Nadal vs current Djokovic in one match= Djokovic wins. But if they played 4 matches 2008 Nadal might take 1 at least, maybe even 2 with some luck

are you mad? nadal's performance at rg 2008 was amazing. nadal in 3, at most in 4.

Er...Djokovic wins hands down. 2008 Nadal ain't that different from 2011 Nadal. Same moonballs, same butt picking, still no plan B. But Nole's game has picked up big time.

Nadal would win in 4 sets max

rafaholic
05-18-2011, 03:20 PM
nadal's performance in 2008 will never be performed at RG...no man can play EVER on that level, and I'm also afraid that rafa can't reach that level again..I would be pleased if he can reach 60% of 2008 Rg level...

Djokovic in damp conditions, Nadal in hotter drier conditions.

Nadal for sure, in 4, maybe even 3, simply because the roland Garros clay surface suits him better than any other clay court!

2011 Nole vs 2008 Nadal at RG, well no chance for Nole. Rafa in 3. Nole played like his current form for one set, and still couldn't win it in 2008. 2008 Rafa was a machine at RG.

And Nadal is different how? Apart from lack of confidence due to losses to Nole, his game/style is EXACTLY the same. Apart from confidence, the major difference is that Nole now is as fit, if not fitter, than Nadal. Neither man made any big technical changes...Nole maybe hits his forehand better now but that's all.

Djokovic had a set point in 2008 SF and he is a lot better now on clay. So if we compare (which is really stupid to do) it would be a very close match, not 3 seter for sure.

Nadull_tard
05-18-2011, 04:14 PM
Actually they have met twice in 2008 , including one hard 3-setter and the RG encounter, where Djokovic had a set point in the third.
Considering Nole 2008 was something about 60% of the new one, I'm going with Djokovic in 5.

We can say compare Rafa to Nole at their peaks- but maybe we haven´t seen Nole peak yet. Also we still don´t know how it ends their 2011 match at RG. But in 2008 Rafa was really great, but Nole was best competition he had on that tournament. He defeated everyone 3:0 but Nole was best guy he faced. He seems to so great thanks to his final where he destroy Roger, but this seems to be overrated, because Roger on clay - already declining vs Rafa at his best. I would go with 2011 Nole, but all this is just hard to compare - Rafa should take his game to new level and this 2011 RG could say us who is better there.

It's impossible to compare these things plus it's so predictable ...Rafa fans/tards are voting for Rafa and Nole fans/tards are voting for Nole.

this is kind of a dumb question... 2011 Nadal on clay is only a little worse than Djokovic 2011 on clay, and we have no idea if DJokovic 2011 clay is as good as even Nadal 2011 best of 5 sets clay.... to compare Djokovic 2011 clay to Nadal 2008 clay is INSANE, Nadal's 2008 level of clay was brilliant

It's weird. I'd want to say 2008 Nadal easily, but I suppose it would be closer than my mind wants me to remember, if only because Nadal's 2008 French Open run was characterized for me by obnoxious defense more than really playing spectacularly. I just remember nobody being able to hit anything he couldnt' get to and return, so how was he to lose points?

Maybe I need to watch highlights again, but for now, my impression is that it would at least be Nadal in 4, maybe the first three being pretty tight. Though one could argue that if we take Novak's apparent newfound fitness into account, it'd be tough. Their RG matches to this point have been characterized by being pretty evenly matched and Djokovic just not being able to go at a high level nearly as long as Rafa.

Agree with this. 2008 Nadal is better than 2011 but not THAT much better. He is playing the exact same game today with slightly worse movement. Stop pretending it's an entirely different player. Not even rafafans should do that. It's basically like saying his decline is complete and then he should retire for all of you.

Very similar to their 2008 RG semi I'd say. Djokovic might reach a second tiebreak.

Nadal's performance in FO 2008 was far greater in term of statistics than it really was on the court.
For example, if you rewatched his trashing of Fed, you would see that it was more Federer who played patheticly and beat himself rather than Nadal playing amazingly and totally outplaying Federer.

If you watch Rafa's match vs. Nole in 2008 you'd notice that his level of play would not be enough to beat the current Djokovic. Maybe if it went to 5 sets he would have a chance, but Nole's level of play is 10x better than it was in 2008.

A little worse?

How is losing two matches in a row that are BOTH IN STRAIGHT SETS a LITTLE worse?

Novak has had an amazing run so far but it's premature to compare him to the greatest clay court player of all time in the year of his most dominant tournament run.

2008 Nadal. He was immense that year, which makes it surprising how JCF beat him at Rome.

2008 Nadal was a better claycourt player, but in terms of the match-up, Djokovic, who pushed peak Nadal in the R.G. semi when he was half the player he is now, would beat Nadal.

I was asking given their current form LEADING INTO the tournament. I'll break it down again so even you can understand; l.e.a.d.i.n.g i.n.t.o. How is this a stupid thread when it's just a tennis question, on a fucking tennis forum. Your an idiot.

IMO that would be an easy match for nole. straight set win, the best nadal could hope for is to lose a set 7-5.

"This" Djokovic is about to go into beast mode for Roland Garros. Like everyone says: best of 5 is a different animal.

Well Djokovic is hungry and he hasn't eaten since Rome. And some clown left his cage open....

i love how everyone seems to think older versions of players are better than current ones, disregarding all the experience they have acquired over the years and disregarding also what the players and experts themselves have to say about their game. i guess this place isn't called the asylum with no reason.

Nadal. Djokovic's clay game has been pretty impressive this season, but doesn't compare to Nadal's devastation in 2008. Easily the most dominant clay performance I've ever seen
