noles "racket thumping"

Sometimes when i am watching a match of nole... i notice he sometimes "thumps" or claps his racket whenever the opponent comes up with something really good.

Like in the indian wells semis between federer, when federer hit an insane drop-volley... after the point-ended nole clapped his racket with hands. He always seems to do this when fed hits an insane shot... and sometimes with nadal too.

Is this out of respect? Or is it more of a "thats what you need to do to beat me" kind of thing

He is showing them respect (congratulate) for a great simple as that :-). He's been doing it for a long time.

It's supposed to be applause. I've seen Roger and Nadal do it. James Blake does it a lot -- or used to, back when hitting a great shot against him was actually necessary (sorry, James ).

Some people think it's condescending, but I guess it's in the eye of the beholder.

I've noticed that some folks think it's 'condescending' or showing 'false appreciation', or anything the like (), but I've never seen anything wrong with a player appreciating a good shot of his opponent, and SHOWING that appreciation.
Fortunately, most of top players do so right now, and I highly appreciate it. :yeah:

It might be 'old fashioned', but I cannot see anything wrong about being courtagious, whatever the situation.

This is just the way Novak was taught to play tennis - appreciating good points of the opponents. I must admit though that in the case of top opponents like Rafa and Fed it does look a bit outlandish.

mind games to give a false sense of self confidence to his opponents. respect, you say? more like blatant gamemanship...

okay, seriously... it's not big deal. probly just a sign of appreciation for a good shot :)
