Title? What title? (kremlin Cup)

Vass

Just wanted to say "bon chance" already.

And I also wanted to express my concern over Marat's strenght. Will he be able to play so mych tennis in one month. I mean he's been playing an unusual lot of matches lately and he might "run out of gas" again. Don't you think?

I know we should focus on Bangkokj now, but still...

junekidd
10-01-2004, 04:44 PM
maybe you are right, vass. but if he has played well, he will not want to stop also. the man who is excited might have enough strength. anyway, thanks for your reminding. it makes me think of AO this year. also VS roger... hope if he reaches final, we will not watch a easy loss cos his fatigue again.

Bibir
10-01-2004, 05:16 PM
He will be tired for sure...But we know that "motivation" and "confidence" are the key of his game...
and he really wants to win in Moscow...Hopefully he won all his matches in Two sets...We'll see :)

ты по-французки говоришь?

Jessi
10-01-2004, 05:18 PM
He's won all his matches in straight sets so fatigue shouldn't be a factor. Vass, you can't have it both ways. Do you want Marat to win or have another one of his "vacations" ;) We've been waiting ALL YEAR for him to get his shit together and when he finally does and in the thick of things again you want him to take it easy? NO one has played more unusual lot of matches than Roger and it doesn't seem to be hurting him. Don't worry about Marat running out of gas, his got plenty in reserve from losing all those first rounds. Its TIME to play!

Besides, he'll get a week off to rest before Moscow.

Denise
10-01-2004, 07:25 PM
hope he'll recorver the gas for the next tournies! i'm sure he'll makes well in Moscow!

maratski
10-01-2004, 08:52 PM
I'm with Jessi on this one, but I understand that you're afraid he'll peak too early.

Aurora
10-01-2004, 08:55 PM
Even if he gets out of Bangkok monday (which everybody hopes of course), I presume he'll have at least 5 whole days to be filled any way he wants to. It isn't thàt much, but he's at home, hungry for more succes, had easy matches and indoor is his most comfortable underground.
I'm not gonna worry about that just now. When Paris and St-Petersburg come along, that's when I'll start if he keeps going this strong. But that's way too far in the future.

merle
10-01-2004, 09:02 PM
Marat in No 1 seed in Moscow. No other Top 10 players there, a pretty weak field really. I hope he won't just hang out in night clubs with his friends the whole week before the Kremlin Cup. That's what I'm a bit worried about! ;) "Bad influence" and euphoria after his last sucesses! I hope the guys (maybe dad) will make him to hit the training courts too!

DAVAI MARATIK!!!!!

vass, this is weird...why is the thread title in french if he's playing in russia?

Kiara
10-02-2004, 04:56 PM
To reiterate what Jess said, physically Marat should have an advantage considering he's played very few matches this year compared to a Roger or Andy, who should be physically and mentally spent by now....If he blows it, it wont be a case of him being fatigued (which he shouldnt be ..) With Marat... if he's playing well he will continue to play well, if he's sucking he will continue to suck....to use a worn-out phrase, it's all about confidence.

Jessi

My Mother was from Belarussia so I learnt to speak the language when I was very young, but I could never read or write it very well. She died 8 years ago, and my Father is English and doesn't speak Russian at all, so since then I have not had so much reason to speak the language. And yes junekidd - your translation is correct :)

I'm probably older than most of you here Vass - but as we're all friends together I can tell you that I was 33 on my last Birthday - which was in May. Hope you don't think I'm too old to join in with you all!! I was 25 years old when my Mum died - she was only in her early 40s - so very young. Thanks for your nice comments everyone. And Jessi - you would cope - my Mum and I were really close like sisters - but you just have to get on with life :) .

Worldcrossing is a board where I registered like 15 months ago. It's a place where a lot of people chat who used to post on CNN boards. They know each other for quite some time. A lot of people have also met each other various times and go watch tennis together. In general they're a friendly bunch, but there's some fighting going on there as well, like on all boards. I think there's some fans you might like and a David forum.

But let's take it one step of a time. First, how will he show up on court? Fully concentrated on the job or a little distracted by the pleasures of Moscow?

Safin survived two match points to win

MOSCOW (AP) - Top-seeded Marat Safin of Russia survived two match points to beat Max Mirnyi 6-7 (8), 7-6 (2), 7-6 (1) Monday and advance to the second round of the US$2.3 million Kremlin Cup.

It was the second straight time Safin has been taken to three sets, having lost to American Andy Roddick a week and a half ago in the semifinals in Bangkok, Thailand, in a match that also was decided by three tiebreaks.
In earlier play Monday, Safin's Davis Cup teammate Igor Kunitsyn upset sixth-seeded Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-4.

Safin and Mirnyi both held serve through the opening set to force the first tiebreak, but Mirnyi broke Safin in the first game of the second and led 3-1. However, the Russian broke back in the 10th game and dominated the tiebreak to even the match.

Safin saved two match points in the 10th game of the final set, avoiding a fifth first-round exit in nine appearances at the Moscow event.

"It was a tough match, as are many of my matches against Mirnyi, as we play a similar style and know each other pretty well," Safin said.

Safin reached semifinals of his hometown event in 2000 - his best career season when he won seven tournaments including the U.S. Open - and in 2002.

Safin, Australian Open runner-up, won the China Open in September for his first title in two years.

I stole Marat's interview from safinator :o

Q: Why is it that Max is so tough for you?

Marat: For the same reason's why he is tough for anybody. After a good serve, he always rushes to the net and therefore puts pressure on you. It is hard to show your best tennis if there is no rythm at all. When seeded players meet unseeded in the earlier rounds, than the unseeded ones have nothing to lose.. I am particularly playing in from of my home crowd that expects me only to win.

Q: Which moments were crucial today?

Marat: Beginning of all tiebreaks (first 3-4 points). In general, you want to gain advantage in tiebreaks early on, since they are so fast.

Q: Can you say that today you revenged your loss to Max last time you played him in Davis Cup?

Marat: No, this match had a different meaning to it. I need the points to qualify for Masters Cup.

Q: How did it happend that you are playing doubles with him?

Marat: I didn't have a partnet when I came here, and then before the tournament they called me and offered to play doubles, so I agreed, cause I thought it was a good idea.

Q: You played 6 tiebreaks in your last two matches, what are your feelings?

Marat: Well, it feels better to win them. Actually, these matches didn't take a lot out of me, since we didn't have many rallies in both matches. It was all about serve.

Q: Have you talked to Nadia Petrova, who draw you to play with Max?

Marat: I am going to have a serious talk with her... (smiles). Actually, these matches are very important for you confidence and form. Right now I am more optimistic about this tournament than just few hours ago...

Q: Do you enjoy these kind of matches or feel nervous?

Marat: You enjoy it only if you win. If I would have lost, I wouldn't be smiling right now. During the match I didn't feel positive emotions, because I knew how hard it would be to get a bite on his serve..

Q: What do you think about your davis cup match up against Chili?

Marat: The tennis level is growing in South America, It is good that we are playing at home. We will need to choose fast indoor surface. I know they (Gonzo, Massu) played very well in Olympics on hard but indoors is faster.

Q: What do you think about women's tennis success?

Marat: We have to thank Anna Kournikova.

I hope his leg is OK!

Only Marat knows why he lost...we just can speculate.... he was tired after 2 very long matches...and he had visibly a foot injury...he taped it in the 2nd set...
Ok...he didn't take his chances ( in 1st set TB)...but he didn't give up and fought until the end... I really don't think he was bored

He looked so sad at the end of the match...

Words from Marat

“Despite this being a bad loss, I still think I have good chances to make it to the (Tennis) Masters (Cup). I had several chances today, the last time when I broke back to go 3-4 in the final set but I couldn't hold my serve.”

“I was tired, not so much from a physical point of view but mentally, after all the pressure and the three-set matches lately.”

maratski

This worried me a bit cause the tournaments that matter are yet to come and he's already mentally tired.

Bibir
10-13-2004, 09:49 PM
Merci jolie diva !!! ;)

Good point...he's still positive and didn't talk about his ankle

He was mentally tired ?...maybe because of the home crowd pressure (don't know why)

But something else is bothering me as I said on GM...his poor serve and returns...What's happened to his wonderful serve?...I remember amazing returns..
He won in China, made semis in Taïland but didn't play that well...he couldn't return Youzhny and Roddick serve...
He never talks about that in interview...but it's obvious that something is wrong with him...he seems motivated...That's why I'm a little bit confused

Bea>> I was thinking of reasons why his game doesn't look that great at the mo - maybe he is working on some things with Peter (serve etc.), but don't know really. As for scores the victories in Bejing and Bangkok were pretty convincing and that was great news already considering his no-confidence before.

I think I'm gonna make it a principle of not betting on Marat. Just lost on Flippo Volandri though.

The match, well what can I say? It was visible that he is tired mentally, that first set loss didn't help, it was his to grab. I was impressed with his fighting spirit, not the Hewitt kind, but you know, not letting his head hang as much as he can sometimes (I guess he can't afford that really in front of the home crowd, but perhaps something's changed).
I didn't see the end of the second set, so I didn't know about the ankle, but it didn't show in the third set. And his game? I got a bit frustrated with some of his shots that didn't work, kept going hitting a forehand where he could go bh dtl. Hardly been to the net properly, which I found surprising cause he did that so much the rest of the year (but Stepanek fired some passing shots when he was in that no man's land, perhaps he got insecure).

In all, I'm not as dissapointed as I think I would be if I hadn't seen the match. His game isn't there yet, but it felt closer than I saw at the 3 slams (duuuh Hanneke, obvious). And somehow he has a goal to fight for and fight against the usual inclination towards mental breakdown and giving up. [which is probably part of why he performs better at the end of year, together with underground]
So it's a mixed bag now: grinding through more matches and finding the (better) game or early losses and broken confidence?

I do feel the next weeks are crucial, especially watching him sit there after his loss staring in front of him. Good performances, some great wins could make him fly, be confident for next season and let his game unleash. I don't know what "good performance" means for him, but if he expects nothing less than a win (or a loss to Fed) in a Master tourny for that, I'm afraid.

I hope for somewhat tough draws: first tough players, but that suit his game and then a big gun. You don't want to play the Stepaneks in a crucial time, you want the masters of the game. And if you really want to win, chances are the concentration will bring your weapons.
Madrid is too soon and I fear a bad early loss. I'm preparing myself for the worst, but keep hoping for a miracle week (Paris anyone?). Why can't Master tournies be 5 sets? ;)

ok. done rambling in not so good english. I'm stuck in my head. give me some other options to think about. or ignore a too long, confusing post.
