09-24-2002, 08:49 PM
lol were not easily phased ;) Wow I love our goalie Dudek,he is so amazing, honestly.Im not too sure about Traore(left or right defender) if he plays or Dioa also defender.U heard of Sami Hyypia? He is brilliant! :)

ha ha Ill just ring Mr.Owen and Mr.Baros then............;)

09-24-2002, 08:57 PM
heh heh have I scared u away Mrs.B?Or are u thinking of something clever to write ;)

Mrs. B
09-24-2002, 09:00 PM
I mean, i'll cheer for them because they're a Swiss team and they're in the CL, and it's Rogi's team and all, and i'll root for Jimenez & Rossi & the Yakin brothers, but Zubi (the goalie) heart does not warm up to him, hard to explain but i hope you'll understand...

Hey, i got a husband, you know! Can't sit in front of the pc all day!

09-24-2002, 09:03 PM
yeh I do understand coz I have said about the players I doubt above. But I have stated about the on form guys, watch out for Dudek,Hyypia and Baros :)Well these truly are my team, coming from near Liverpool, with my gran being from Liverpool and my dad supporting them all his life.I have been to Anfield before and my dad is trying to get tickets for v Spartak Moscow in a few weeks! :D

Mrs. B
09-24-2002, 09:07 PM
Talking about tickets, i'm waiting for my tickets to the Swiss Indoors...i already paid last week, so they should be sending it any day now. Wow, am really excited over that.

But going back to tomorrow's match, let's hope it's gonna be a good one, eh? Regardless of who wins. I really appreciate watching players who have real sportsmanship in them...and not always these drama queens rolling on the grass as if they were dying or something...

09-24-2002, 09:09 PM
lol @ Mrs.B and her hubby! ;)

yeh yeh exactly the same I hope its entertaining!I dont like divers although Diouf seems to be learning that trade.

Anyway I gotta go to bed now,I expect to see u here before, the match and after!I will be here at half time but u might be at the tennis club.

Anyways good night! :wavey:

Doris Loeffel
09-25-2002, 10:16 AM
Mrs. B. we've got something alike!! (besides cheering for Roger) also I can't warm up (as you put it) for Zubi. Even when he played for my team (GC) I never actually liked it. But he belongs to Basel and as they made it to the CL I'm fully behind them.

Gooooo FC Basel!!
Show Liverpool who's the best!!

Mrs. B
09-25-2002, 10:49 AM

i think a lot of Swiss don't like him because he thinks he's the best goalie in CH! But like you said we'll support FC Basel for being in the CL.

Hey, i'm from Bern, you know ;) so i'm an YB fan!

Doris Loeffel
09-25-2002, 11:35 AM
I should actually cheer for YB as well (I live also in the Kanton Bern) but as a teenie (when was that again ;) ) I had a crush on Andy Egli who played for GC back then and since then I'm kind of hooked to GC. (Alos in Hockey I'm not for the SCB (Roger's team) but for HC Fribourg Gottéron!!)

Gooooo Äfffff Ceeeee Beeeeeee

Gooooo Basel goooooo!!

Mrs. B
09-25-2002, 11:48 AM
Yeah, Andi Egli is one good looking dude! ;)

Funny that Roger supports SCB huh?, But then Basel doesn't have one, oder?

I've watched a couple of ice hockey matches here the last few seasons and i really like it. There's so much action and i love the atmosphere...but i miss Tosio. :(

So you're in fact a Bernese girl, too! ;) Are you close to Bern, then? Do you come to Bern sometimes?

Doris Loeffel
09-25-2002, 11:56 AM
allmost every weekend I drive through it!!
Now I live in the emmental but I grew up at the border to the Kanton Freiburg/Fribourg so each time I'll visit my parents I'll pass by Bern. But it's already over a month ago when I've been to town last. And you do you live in Bern?

Mrs. B
09-25-2002, 12:11 PM
We used to live in the city, but we moved here to Gümligen about 3 years ago. The taxes are lower...;)

I love the Emmental area! A Filipina kollegin of mine lives in Rüderswil and her house is on the edge of a big field and we always make a feast by her place in the summertime. It's such a pleasure to drive there, the rolling hills and the green fields are so beautiful. In the wintertime when the landscape is covered with snow it is a dreamland! :)

Doris Loeffel
09-25-2002, 01:27 PM
Guess what Mrs. B. I used to live in Rüderswil :). The house was placed where Fuchs und Hase say good night to each other ;)

In Gümligen we have a client of us ;)

We really don't live that far away from each other.....

09-25-2002, 03:38 PM
:) Guten morgen!

Hey, Doris and Mrs. B.!

You're almost neighbours! Switzerland is sounding nicer all the time with your lovely descriptions! But now I guess it's still raining and cold? Still gorgeous here!

So much for tennis in HK...

So who is everyone rooting for in the UEFA Champions League?

I'm not sure what they're showing here on TV -- probably Real Madrid!! I doubt I'll get to see Liverpool vs. FC Basel -- too bad!

Mrs. B. did you get your Swiss Indoors tix yet? Coming up soon!! Exciting!

Where's ILR today?

Mrs. B
09-25-2002, 05:39 PM
Hi RogiFan!

Wie gehts? Just came back from the movies. Finally, i did get to see my Big Fat Greek Wedding, sooo funny! But it was heartwarming too, it reminds me so much of my background---extended families, big weddings, lots of food, all that stuff.

Yeah, we're waiting for the match, and of course we want the Swiss team to win, but iluvRogi wouldn't want that. She's a Liverpool girl. Yeah, where is she? She was supposed to show up here before the match started...guess i'll catch her later. ;)

09-25-2002, 06:21 PM
lol!oooops Im here now!Ill be on at half time Ive been out! :)
Yes I am a Liverpool girl and Im excited because my dad got the tickets!I expect to see you all here 2 .........;)

09-25-2002, 06:22 PM
Show Liverpool who's the best!!

HEY!I take exception to that! ;)

Mrs. B
09-25-2002, 07:19 PM
Yeheyyy! Basel made the equalizer!!!!!

So it's still nobody's game... ;)

09-25-2002, 07:21 PM
hmmmm admit it you didnt deserve it. Riise hit the bar twice,Baros hit the bar..............

Mrs. B
09-25-2002, 07:24 PM
Well, luck for the Basel boys, but then credit to Zubi he flicked that ball out...twice.

Darn, your boyz are too fast. We're not used to this pace, the Swiss are used to playing slow teams...:( But i must admit that Baros is brilliant.

09-25-2002, 07:25 PM
I told you Baros was amazing didnt I? ;) lol fast?Yeh we usually just defend to be honest, but we know that we need a win.And we deserve one.Steven Gerrard is playing fantastic too :)

Mrs. B
09-25-2002, 07:28 PM
What's wrong with Owens tonight? It's the Baros Show! ;)

09-25-2002, 07:29 PM
tonight? Its been like that all season. He blames the World Cup.
Hey bring on the Baros show!!! ;) :) :D

Mrs. B
09-25-2002, 07:30 PM
He's eye candy. ;)

09-25-2002, 07:31 PM
Owen?Or Baros????I think Baros looks like a woodpecker!But he is awesome! :)

09-25-2002, 07:33 PM
back later! :wavey:

Mrs. B
09-25-2002, 07:33 PM
Nope, there's something about him...But he's too boyish, i mean he's only 20.

hey, great ur old man got tickets!... Gotta go, second half.

Talk to you later.

09-25-2002, 07:38 PM
:) Hi all!

Real Madrid 2-0 vs. Gent!!!

Soon I'll be away...

Mrs. B
09-25-2002, 08:21 PM
It's a draw! 1-1 . Now Basel has 4 points, Liverpool 1

Congrats to our boys!!! ;)

09-25-2002, 08:22 PM
ooooooooo Im very disappointed with that.I think thats 2 points lost rather than 1 point earned. If we had put our chances away in the first half then we would have won,but we didnt and thats what cost us. :( Im kinda sad right now,1 point out of 6. :(

Owen was pure.......I dunno really and I thought you said the goalie was dodgy!!!!God u have some funny names!!!!!!

09-25-2002, 08:23 PM
:D Real Madrid 6 Genk 0!!!

Great for FC Basel, Mrs. B! Rogi must be happy! A good week for our Swiss boy!

Mrs. B
09-25-2002, 08:24 PM
Well, they're not all Swiss, u know. Like not all Liverpool players are Brits. For example, the Yakin brothers are Turkish, but they have CH nationalities.

Mrs. B
09-25-2002, 08:25 PM
Yeah, RF. Good performance by the Swiss. :)

Are you all packed?

09-25-2002, 08:26 PM
yeh I know and what was with the big plaster on one of the Yakins?lol :p

Hmmmmmm most of the Liverpool lads are foreign!OK so Im tryna be happy for the Swiss boys and Rogi............but its hard :(

09-25-2002, 08:29 PM
:( poor ilr! sorry, your team lost! how did the fans react? did fc baz play really well or liverpool play badly? or neither of the preceding!

09-25-2002, 08:31 PM
lol we didnt lose!it was 1-1 but it felt like we lost because we played so brilliant and got 1 measly point out of it :(

Mrs. B
09-25-2002, 08:37 PM
Hakan Yakin's forehead was cut from the last game, i think.
Yeah, Zubi wasn't bad tonight. But the Livers had more control of the ball during the whole match. Basel was just lucky. Did you see that free kick where Jimenez touches the ball with his hand? It was the the hand of God. ;)

09-25-2002, 08:40 PM
ooooooooooo soooooooooooooo dont mention those 3 terrible words to me,ever!

ahem, yes.slight handball = penalty.part time ref whose job is a policeman= gets bad decisions wrong! :fiery: Hmmmm I guess we just gotta hope you get beat by Valencia and we hammer SM!Plz dont hate me for being so bitter, upset and nasty

BTW which Yakin brother was supossed to be the better looking? ;) :p

Mrs. B
09-25-2002, 08:53 PM
Better looking from the two, i couldn't say. But playwise i think the younger one, Hakan, plays much better.

I prefer Rossi's dark rugged look, plus him making that goal for Basel makes me notice him more...;)

But you're right, they gotta play better to come up with the goods against Valencia...they'll get fried. :(

09-25-2002, 08:56 PM
Rossi.pfffft.Hes got hair like me!:) OK so mines a bit nicer! ;) Yeh if you do get beat by Valencia and after we hammer the Russians it will be 4 points all then the battle will really begin.........;)

Mrs. B
09-25-2002, 08:58 PM
There's the spirit. Love your optimism, kiddo. ;)

09-25-2002, 09:02 PM
uh huh im a very optimistic person ;) :wavey:

Mrs. B
09-25-2002, 09:14 PM
G'night! Sleep tight...:wavey:

09-25-2002, 09:21 PM
:) mrs b

what a crazy lopsided score for real madrid!

so you liked MBFGW? good! i still have to see it!

i've been to a BFPW = big fat polish wedding and a BFIW = big fat italian wedding! talk about feasts! eating nonstop then dancing it off then eating more fruit, desserts then more dancing and drinking! my kind of do! your filipino weddings sound good too!

poor ilr -- not the way she wanted the day to end :(

so who play valencia next? that s/be juanqui's team but he supports real madrid [after all he was invited to kick the ball for them]

i guess rogi will be off to moscow v soon... DO some DAMAGE, ROGI! he's probably still basking in the victory...

Mrs. B
09-25-2002, 09:27 PM
Guess what, Basel plays Valencia next. Then i will be upset! Anyway, there are not much expectations on FCB but people here are happy that they made it to the CL.

As for Real Madrid, they have such a big budget and if they're able to afford the good players, then not win, that would be quite a disaster. Frankly i find it a bit too much. But that's football. ;)

Doris Loeffel
09-26-2002, 09:00 AM
Well hope you all had a good night sleep! I did!! ;)

Concrats Basel for that one point which was almost equal as a victory.

O.K. Basel was lucky and they had Zubi. I must addmit he played great - still he'll never be my fave...... But this time he saved our team - which made far to many missed shots for my little heart ;). Geeee could hardly trust my eyes how many errors they made. Just as well Zubi had great reflexes and the luck on his side.

The reds really were fast. And with the pressure they played they should have won. But I'm happy they didn't ;). And Basel really was effectife with his goal chances....

As for the Yakin brothers I prefere the older Murat that is ;) . Maybe Hakan should have played with his tourban again. He already had an head injury against Celtic. Then he got an other one a week ago against Spartak. And both times he played with a turban and had a great match despite the injury. Don't say he didn't play great yesterday but the "i-Tüpfelchen" was missing in form of a goal...

O.K. I'm already spoiled now hehehe

Good luck against Valencia!!

Goooo ÄFFFF CEEEE BEEEE!!! Hmmm actually I was surprised that you heared more shouting FCB FCB FCB than any word from the Liverpool - Fans. They've been pretty quiet wonder why ;)

Mrs. B
09-26-2002, 10:33 AM
That was sweet of the FCB fans to come, about 2,000 of them, to support their team...and considering the problems they encountered with their flight and all, they didn't do so bad, esp. with luck at their side. ;)

Re: you lived in Rüderswil where the foxes say goodnight to the wabbits? That must be pretty remote, then. But i love nature, sometimes i wished i lived in the countryside...:)

09-26-2002, 07:07 PM
you said it all there Doris, luck, great reflexes, and we should have won! No probs,Valencia will erm,how do I say this nicely, take you apart! For the next two matches aswell. ;)

The Liverpool fans werent to be heard because they knew that they should have won and were frustrated.I think the Basle fans were overawed yet happy but we were annoying with not putting the game beyond them. That I think, explains it.Nevertheless,I fully look forward to trouncing Moscow, home and away!!!Bring it on!!!! :) ;)

09-26-2002, 09:27 PM
:wavey: ILR ( ) and Mrs. B!

Mrs. B

Mrs. B
10-01-2002, 04:23 PM
Ha! Thats' where the Basel boys got lucky on their last match...;)

I don't mind being alone here tomorrow night, so long as they perform well against Valencia, then i can have a soliloquy. Don't forget that Doris is still around, she will be watching too and cheering for the Swiss team!

10-01-2002, 04:25 PM
yes that is where you got lucky.very lucky! ;) Just gotta take the points of you in Switzerland. ;)

I cant wait to get my scarf out and sing you'll never walk alone with the rest of the ground. :) Im really excited now! :D

Mrs. B
10-01-2002, 04:35 PM
when you walk through a storm
keep your head up high
and don't be afraid of the dark
at the end of a storm is a golden sky
and the sweet silver song of a lark

walk on, through the rain
walk on through the tears
though your dreams may toss and turn
walk on , walk on with hope in your heart
and you'll never walk alone
you'll never walk alone....

10-01-2002, 04:40 PM
oooooo its our song! :) I love it thankyou :) It means so much to me

Mrs. B
10-01-2002, 04:41 PM
Great lyrics...

10-01-2002, 04:44 PM
indeed.I love singing it and waving my scarf.Have you ever seen it sung at Anfield? It means so much to the fans. Its wonderful :) Ive done it twice before :)

Mrs. B
10-01-2002, 07:37 PM
Just saw that once before the opening of the match against Basel last week, i must say it moved me, how everyone was singing along, even me!

10-01-2002, 07:47 PM
Yeah it is very touching.I always sing it :) Its a great thing that you cant really say about any other team,we have this great song we sing at the beginning of every match :) It is moving :)

Doris Loeffel
10-02-2002, 09:16 AM
Well before I forget

Gooo, goooo, gooooooo

And yes it gave goose bumps to me too when I heard the song last week - (almost missed it thoug!! only cought the end.)

Good luck FC Basel!! You can win even against Valencia!!!

Mrs. B
10-02-2002, 07:27 PM
Okey, i'm here at half time and it's not lookin good at all...

IT'S 4-0 for Valencia... :(

They already made 3 goals in 17 minutes, can you believe it?
They are playing cat & mouse games with the Baslers...ouch!
And the slippery conditions are not helping at all. Valencia's defense is simply too good... sheisse!

Mrs. B
10-02-2002, 07:36 PM
... and iluvRogi must be in cloud 9. 3-0 for Liverpool in the first half. :)

Mrs. B
10-02-2002, 08:33 PM
Final score: Valencia 6, Basel 2 :(

This is like a tennis score!!!!

Mrs. B
10-02-2002, 08:40 PM
Liverpool-Spartak 5-0. Congrats, iluvRogi!!!!

Doris Loeffel
10-03-2002, 08:04 AM
Back to reality!!!

Looks like the Baslers had the wrong game plan.

Kind of missed the start of it and could hardly trust my eyes when I saw the 2:0 after 13 min!! Then just shortly after it was 3:0.....

..... so I desided to watch something else not without checking the score once in a while but it got worse and worse all the time...

.... Valencia really did dominate the Baslers in each category.

Just to bad that Liverpool had to win that high that means good bye second spot for the Baslers...

... no no I'm not giving up hope yet there's still a chance for us!!

Gooooo FCB

(Just hope Roger didn't follow this match!!)

10-03-2002, 03:39 PM
heh heh youre right Mrs.B cloud nine! :D It was so much fun.:) I posted more on the hill and seeing as this is a Basle thread I dont want to rub it in too much.;) I also dont want to post here what happened at half time when the Valencia v Basle score was announced!;)

Yup 2nd we are and second we will finish!I predicted that we would hammer Moscow and erm that Valencia well.Obviously I didnt see that match but was it as bad as the scoreline suggests?

Mrs. B
10-03-2002, 03:51 PM
Yeah, ilR, that match sucked big time!

They already had 2 goals in 13 minutes, can you believe it? 3 goals in 17 minutes! But i mean, if Valencia beat Liverpool easily, this one's like taking a hike on the moon...the Basel boys couldn't do anything right, much less had control of the ball. Valencia was just too good...At least Basel had 2 goals, consolation price. hmmmp!

10-03-2002, 04:06 PM
lol taking a hike on the moon! ;) Hmmmmm 4 points all then.Well I think we were 3 up by 20 mins or so.:D I didnt think wed score at all in the 2nd half becoz usually wot we do is make a couple of subs and just play it around at the back and not really try and score. But we did.At 5-0 up in the 90th minute a huge chant went up "we want 6!We want 6!" lol.It never happened.Well I knew how good Valencia were last year and it seems the Basle boys found out last night.Theyd better buck up if they want even a draw against them next time!

Mrs. B
10-03-2002, 05:11 PM
Basel got a good schooling there from the Spaniards. They played a much higher level, no question about it...:(

10-21-2002, 10:46 PM
lol you mentioned the Basle match on the other thread.Thought Id bring this one up again.RF wasnt around much last time. :( She might not have heard of my great time at Anfield.Maybe I should remind her ;) :p

10-21-2002, 10:51 PM
speaking of which,we play Spartak at 5pm,my time.:) And Basle away is our last match.Could be very interesting ...........;)

Mrs. B
10-22-2002, 08:02 AM

10-22-2002, 08:02 AM

Doris Loeffel
10-22-2002, 10:00 AM
First time I played in a group. As I only had about two hrs sleep the night before I was pretty bad....

... took me a while till I finally was able to hit a ball proberly. At the end it went quite well still guess I'm the weekest link of the group containing two elder women (around 50 I'd say) and a young girl. Oh well...

10-22-2002, 12:40 PM
:) So, when does the match start? Actually, Juanqui's fave team is NOT Valencia, weirdly, it's Real Madrid (he got to see them practise in Madrid last week, being sort of an honorary member)!

But who do I root for, Mrs. B.?

Mrs. B
10-22-2002, 12:44 PM
The good thing with being in a group is you save a lot of energy and it costs less. It's also quite motivating, i think. :)

If you can just do it on a regular basis even better...

Well, then:

Do it for Rogi, the "Baselbieter"!!

10-22-2002, 12:52 PM

Have you heard this?

Sunday decision on Moscow match
Friday 25 October 2002
UEFA is considering postponing next Wednesday's UEFA Champions League Group B match between FC Spartak Moskva and FC Basel at the Dinamo stadium in Moscow.

Current events
European football's governing body said on Friday that current events in the Russian capital, where hundreds of people are being held hostage in a theatre, have led UEFA to think about delaying the staging of the match, and possibly playing the game at another venue in Russia.

Details on
UEFA said in a statement that a decision regarding Wednesday's match would follow on Sunday 27 October at 20.00CET, with details being made available on

Another venue
"The match will then either be given the go-ahead and be played in Moscow at 8pm local time (18.00CET) or be postponed by one week and be played in Moscow, or another venue in Russia, on Wednesday 6 November," said UEFA.

Mrs. B
10-29-2002, 08:45 PM
It's on the 6th of November, in Moscow.

10-29-2002, 08:46 PM
yup last line Mrs.B ;)

10-29-2002, 08:56 PM
hmmm so just Liverpool v Valencia then tomorrow night. It'll be very different at Anfield, especially when we are shooting at the Kop end.:) Its like a fortress. Not even the mighty Valencia will win!;) hopefully :p

10-30-2002, 05:31 PM
maybe I should change the name of this thread to "the FC Basle and other Champions Leagues teams thread" ;) lol well anyway,I found out today that if we win,we go through,or so I've heard.I would be quite happy with a draw though.

Mrs. B
10-30-2002, 06:12 PM
OK, that's a good suggestion, so at least we can still continue talking about football here all the way to the finals of the CL. ;)

10-30-2002, 07:25 PM
yeah Ill just go and do that now :) Hmm Im not bitter you know but I really dislike Valencia. They are just being very unsporting.Diving, picking petty arguements, rolling over like they've been shot and one incident Pablo Aimar actually stamped on one of our players. The goal was very cruel a bad og and Owen given offside when he clearly wasn't.Hope I dont sound bitter;)

Doris Loeffel
10-31-2002, 08:45 AM
Hmmm ILR but this result is pretty good for Basel!!

Hope they'll win next week. Btw the match is on tuesday 5. Nov. they changed it again.

Gooo FCB!!!

10-31-2002, 05:05 PM
Oh I know. It'll be alright. You'll blow it last match ;)

10-31-2002, 05:24 PM
Gooo Spartak!!!I just can't cheer for any other foreign team when they play

and Go Liverpool :bounce:

10-31-2002, 05:29 PM
Lst year in the Champions League when we needed a result we got it.We're not afraid of playing away from home.To us,a football pitch is a football pitch. It makes no difference where it is.Thats proved by wins away v Roma,Man Utd,Spartak, away in Kiev, even in the Premiership.Apart from Valencia but thats because they played so much better not because we were afraid.Dont say you werent warned;)

Doris Loeffel
11-05-2002, 04:27 PM
Good luck FCB!!!!

11-05-2002, 04:37 PM
:) So is FC Basel playing Spartak today?? It was postponed, right? Who do I cheer for, girls??

I wonder what we get on TV here... you never know how they choose the matches -- it's part of that UEFA Champions show anyway! [what do I know about football!!?]

Anyway, HOPP, FC BASEL and DAVAI Spartak and GO LIVERPOOL, etc. :p

11-05-2002, 05:48 PM
lol RF you just reminded me to go and check the score!;)

11-05-2002, 05:49 PM

Doris Loeffel
11-06-2002, 09:40 AM
I'm sorry for Spartak Nina when I'm right they only managed to make one goal.... that must be really fustrating.

But of course I'm happy for Basel. Now they really have to focuse 200 % for the ultimate match against Liverpool.

Allleeezzzz FCB!!

11-06-2002, 11:31 AM
this is so cool! let's hope they can make it (to everybody' surprise).

11-12-2002, 06:00 PM
:) Just saw a feature on FC Basel on my UEFA show! They were talking about the city of Basel and how to get to the St-Jakob stadium and what to buy in the FCB store and what to eat at the resto -- burger and fries about 25CHF!!! Neat! Showed Rhine and ferry and nice views!! Nice little place there Rogi!!

I wonder what match they'll show! On SUI news mentioned some incidents before the FCB and Liverpool match!! Nice bright sunny cold day though!

Mrs. B

Hi, Emma!

there you are. hope you're not taking this too hard. prolly not, you're already posting ur next team. yeah, FCB was hot tonight, altho Liverpool did catch up...but it wasn't good enough.

I still am not happy with that Zubi though. What a jerk! Did you see how he kept that ball after Smicer made a goal? He should learn how to behave properly!

11-12-2002, 08:58 PM

Great FCB!!

Better luck next time Liverpool!! (Bet you never again will underestimate a swiss team)

And yes I agree Mrs. B Henchoz did look traurig...

Mrs. B

Liverpool go out despite thrilling comeback

Liverpool were eliminated from the Champions League despite coming from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 with Basel on Tuesday. The Swiss champions go through to the second phase after finishing second in Group B behind Valencia who beat Spartak Moscow 3-0 in the Mestalla.

Basel stunned Liverpool in the St Jakob stadium by racing into a three-goal lead inside the first 29 minutes and, although second-half goals from Danny Murphy (61), Vladimir Smicer (64) and Michael Owen (85), earned Gerrard Houllier's team a point on the night, it was not enough to see them through to the last 16. Instead, they must settle for a place in the Uefa Cup after finishing third.

Liverpool were up against it from the second minute when Hakan Yakin broke down the left and produced a perfect low cross for Rossi to crash the ball into the empty net from six yards out.

Basel doubled their lead midway through the first half when the impressive Ergic played an exquisite through-ball to Gimenez and the Argentine forward slipped his first-time shot under the body of Dudek.

The Swiss side were the fastest to all the loose balls and threatened to score almost every time they ventured forward. Liverpool simply did not know what had hit them, and when Atouba turned the ball home from close range after Dudek had parried Hakan Yakin's free kick, it seemed as though there would be no way back.

But one thing that Houllier's team does not lack is spirit, and they showed impressive resolve to come back in the second half.

Murphy set the ball rolling when he crashed a low shot home from the edge of the area and Smicer soon followed suit as the home fans started to fear the worse.

Owen set up a rousing finish when he earned his side a penalty in the dying minutes after Murat Yakin had stopped the England forward in his tracks by using his hand. And although Zuberbuhler saved Owen's spot kick, the striker reacted brilliantly to volley home the rebound.

Nevertheless Basel clung on through four minutes of injury time to become the first Swiss side ever to qualify for the second phase of the Champions League.

11-13-2002, 09:37 AM

i mean, i'm not even extremely interested in football. but what FCB has done is just incredible and i think the whole of switzerland is rather proud! :D

11-13-2002, 09:40 AM

from roger's interview after his win vs. novak:

QUESTION: The question is not about tennis, it's about football. You come from Basel in Switzerland and your football team have just beaten Liverpool. Do you know that and what do you think of that?
ROGER FEDERER: Yes, I know that. They didn't beat them, but they finished ahead of them in the rankings and that's what was important and I think it was unbelievable result for Basel. I mean, I think nobody expected this. They were hoping to get into UAFA and now they made it into next stage of Champions League. I think the whole year has been just incredible for them. They won the Swiss Cup, they won the Swiss Championships, then they qualified against Celtic?Glasgow and they have been riding on this wave and it's been inspiring me lately and it's a pleasure to go and watch them.

Apparently it still was a pretty good match (nope I haven't seen it..) where Basel wasn't able to make the 2:0 or even the 3:0...

Well better luck next time FCB!!

11-27-2002, 11:54 AM
Yeah, I was hoping FCB would win. But okey, Manchester is the better team.
I hope ajax will win this evening against Valencia!!!
