Call him Mello, not 'Guga'

By Brian Biggane

Palm Beach Post Staff Writer

Thursday, February 03, 2005

DELRAY BEACH — Brazil is famous for soccer, not tennis. Gustavo Kuerten has done his best to change that, but with Kuerten sidelined by a hip injury and slipping in the world rankings, Brazilian tennis is at a crossroad again.

Enter Ricardo Mello. After years in the sport's minor leagues, Mello made his first big ATP splash in September when he beat Boca Raton's Vince Spadea for the Millennium International Championships singles title. At No. 64, the 24-year-old Mello owns the highest ranking of any Brazilian behind the 36th-ranked Kuerten.

A promising future? Yes. Just don't call Mello the next Kuerten.

" 'Guga' in my opinion is a miracle," Mello said Wednesday after teaming with Wesley Moodie, his singles opponent today, for a three-set doubles victory over Kevin Kim and Tripp Phillips in the tournament at the Delray Beach Tennis Center.

"He's a player who came out of nowhere. Nobody expected it," Mello said. "It's not normal for us to have a guy who was No. 1 and a three-time (French Open) champion. Once he stops, who knows?"

Mello, Kuerten, and the other six Brazilians on the ATP Tour have been at odds with the Brazilian Tennis Federation for years, claiming it has refused to support its players and has hoarded funds for its own purposes.

The federation installed a new president last month and, with guidance from the players, he's leading the search for a new coach. Mello, who has committed to playing Davis Cup at Colombia in four weeks, is hopeful of change, but wary.

"Every day they find a new debt that they have to fix, from what the other regime left behind," Mello said.

"There's plenty of players that are good, but since there's not much help from sponsors or anything like that, it depends on the player himself."

Mello, a 5-foot-9, 146-pound left-hander, has done much to overcome his own limitations. After six years playing in Futures and Challenger events, he has gone 16-16 in ATP events the past two years. By far his best success has been at Delray Beach. Otherwise, he's been a quarterfinalist twice.

"After winning last year, I come to tournaments like this knowing if I play well, I can win," he said. "Playing against top guys now, I'm not happy anymore just to win points. I feel I can win the match. And that comes from playing at this level more often." :yeah:

Mello can reach another quarterfinal with a second-round win against Moodie, a 6-5 South African who finished last year ranked No. 136, at noon today. He admitted it will be a bit strange to play against his doubles partner in this event, but said it's something he has done before.

"It helps he's an easygoing guy, and I'm pretty easygoing too," said Mello, who is so quiet his friends in Brazil call him "Papagayo," which is Portugeuse for parrot.

"Other than that, it's just another match."

Maybe the explanation for his nickname is like this: his friends call him parrot just to emphasize the difference between him and the bird. The bird being that loud, and him being so quiet and all. Maybe they want him to be a little bit more like the parrot???

Mello out at Millennium Championships

By Michael Russo
Staff Writer

DELRAY BEACH -- On Sunday, a new champion will be crowned at the Millennium International Tennis Championships.

That was assured Thursday when defending champion Ricardo Mello was ousted in straight sets and two-time ITC champion Jan-Michael Gambill was beaten in three sets in the second round at the Delray Beach Tennis Center.

"Losing a match is never fun, especially here where I have played well," said Mello, who lost to South African Wesley Moodie 6-4, 6-4. "There are some expectations to do well again. But Moodie was too good for me today."

Gambill, the all-time winningest player at the ITC (14-4), was knocked out by Dutchman Peter Wessels 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-3. After winning the second-set tiebreaker, Gambill struggled in the third set and eventually handed Wessels a gift -- a break of his serve via a double fault to give Wessels a 5-3 lead.

"It wasn't until the five-minute warmup when I learned [Gambill] won this tournament twice," said Wessels, 26, who made it to the ITC semifinals four years ago. "I said, `Oh, this might be even more difficult than I thought.' But he didn't play his best game. He missed a lot of easy balls and had some double faults."

While none of the eight quarterfinalists has won the ITC, the top three seeds are still alive and will play today -- 21st-ranked Vince Spadea, No. 28 Jiri Novak and No. 46 Xavier Malisse.

The top-seeded Spadea, who won Wednesday and will face Kevin Kim at 7 tonight, is playing in his eighth ITC after losing in the final to Mello in September. Malisse, the No. 3 seed, won Wednesday and will play Ramon Delgado tonight. Malisse has lost in the ITC final twice -- to Gambill in 2001 and to Lleyton Hewitt in 1999.

Novak, the No. 2 seed and winner of seven ATP titles -- including two in October -- is playing in his first ITC. Thursday, the No. 1 player from the Czech Republic for six consecutive years easily handled Philipp Kohlschreiber, who was coming off a fourth-round appearance in the Australian Open, 6-2, 6-1.

"I'm playing the best tennis of my life," said Novak, who reached No. 5 in the world in 2002.

Novak will play Kenneth Carlsen of Denmark at 5. Carlsen defeated Brian Vahaly 2-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3.

"I came out poorly, but I was able to crawl my way back into the match," Carlsen said.

In their only previous meeting in 1997, Carlsen beat Novak in straight sets in New Zealand.

In Mello's match, he led 2-1 in the first set with two break points on Moodie's serve. But Moodie rallied to win the game and will face Wessels today at 2. In a 2003 Futures match in Glasgow, Moodie beat Wessels in three sets.

Three hours after his loss, Mello was back alongside Moodie as doubles partners, and they were beaten 3-6, 6-7 (4) by Rick Leach and Brian MacPhie in the quarterfinals.

"It was weird to be beside the guy [in the doubles match] who you just lost to [in the singles match]," Mello said.

MILLENNIUM INTERNATIONAL TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS
Friends become foes
Doubles duo square off in singles today
By Michael Russo
Staff Writer
February 3, 2005

DELRAY BEACH · South African Wesley Moodie had two tasks Wednesday: competing against Kevin Kim and Tripp Phillips while scouting his doubles partner, Ricardo Mello.

Moodie and Mello will go from allies to adversaries today when they meet in a second-round singles match at the Millennium International Tennis Championships at the Delray Beach Tennis Center.

"I was trying to take notes on how he was playing," Moodie said after he and Mello ousted Kim and Phillips in a 2-hour, 18-minute thriller 4-6, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (5). "[Mello] won this tournament last year [singles], so he obviously likes the surface."

Asked what he learned about Mello's game, Wesley, who has never played Mello, quipped, "I have to keep that confidential."

As partners, Wesley, 25, and Mello, 24, looked like the Odd Couple.

Wesley is a 6-foot-5, 200-pound right-hander. Mello, from Brazil, is a 5-9, 146-pound lefty. In the second set, the tandem saved match point twice in the tiebreaker, fighting off one while receiving. It was high drama, and as word circulated around the facility, fans left the Vince Spadea-Teimuraz Gabashvili match on the stadium court to hurry over to Court 1. The stands filled, and barricades were lined with standing patrons.

"When we started off, there were not so many people, but toward the end, there were quite a few enjoying the tennis," Moodie said.

Added Mello, "It was a match won on small details. One point here and there is what made the difference."

Mello picked up a lot about Moodie's game, saying, "I know he has a big serve, and I'm going to attack him as much as I can and try to keep the points short."

After Mello and Moodie battle each other at noon today, the two will become partners again for a 5 p.m. doubles quarterfinals match against Rick Leach and Brian MacPhie.

"Hopefully we have a friendly [singles] match," Moodie joked.

Mello wins twice at Brazil Open

Sports Ticker

2/17/2005

COSTA DO SAUIPE, Brazil (Ticker) - Ricardo Mello had no problems having to play twice Thursday at the $380,000 Brazil Open claycourt tennis tournament.

Because of heavy rains Wednesday, Mello and others had to play both second-round and quarterfinal matches Thursday, and the ninth-seeded Brazilian defeated both qualifier Martin Vassallo Arguello of Argentina and Spaniard Santiago Ventura to advance to the semifinals.

In his second-round matchup, Mello held a 6-3, 1-0 lead when Vassallo Arguello retired due to heat stress. Hours later, Mello posted a 7-5, 6-1 triumph over Ventura, who had completed his second-round match Wednesday.

Mello awaits either sixth-seeded Spaniard Rafael Nadal or Argentine Agustin Calleri in the semifinals. :scared:

Nadal posted a 6-3, 6-3 victory over countryman Alex Calatrava, while Calleri upset fellow Argentine No. 3 Juan Ignacio Chela, 7-6 (7-2), 6-1.

In the bottom half of the draw, Alberto Martin of Spain upset No. 7 Mariano Zabaleta of Argentina, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4. Both players completed second-round wins Wednesday.

Martin will meet a qualifier in the semifinals, either Peter Luczak of Austria or Edgardo Massa of Argentina.

Luczak rallied to defeat Brazilian wild card Andre Sa, 3-6, 6-3, 6-0, while Massa saved a match point en route to upsetting No.8 Albert Costa of Spain, 6-7 (3-7), 6-1, 7-6 (9-7).

Last week I went to a small challenger in Ettlingen, Germany, where Ricardo played. For my luck he was scheduled on Tuesday so late, that I could watch his first round Singles match, when he beat Adrian Garcia. The weather was so cold, it was horrible :bolt: . Then there arrived additional to that a hailstorm. After that it was still colder......:bolt: :bolt: In the end I told Ricardo: "Vamos Ricardo! Estou fria!" (C'mon Ricardo! I'm freezing!) And what happened? Five minutes later Ricardo finished that match. I got to know him as a quiet, reserved guy, but very comfortable to talk to. And he's patient too (at least off the courts). Poor guy, he was the first Brazilian I talked to in Portuguese (I tried to at least :o) I think I wasn't really successful with that...

Mello "friendly" fired his coach, Azevedo. He still doesn't have a new coach for the petrobras Cup. He also says he won't go to Australia to play the qualy.

Time to rejuvenate this thread. Ricardo is back in the top 100! He defended his Sao Paolo championship, made the semifinals of Costa, qualified for both Indian Wells and Miami and won a round at Indian Wells, and made the final of the Curitiba challenger. He's at #92 on the entry rank now. This guy who was in the top 50 as a youngster is back and doing business as a 29 year old now.

(5) Garcia-Lopez vs Malisse
(WC) Tavares vs Mello
Qualifier vs Qualifier
Bye vs (3/WC) Monfils

He is playing in Estoril this week, and that is his section. Good opportunity for a win at an ATP stop. Hopefully he has a good week.
