Gastão Elias Thread

03-18-2011, 12:53 PM
I decided that it was about time to open a cheering thread for Gastão at MTF.

Huge potencial, huge progress this year.

"Pepe" is a former Top-10 Junior, won the Eddie Herr International, won a Futures event at the age of 16, was a training partner for Federer for two weeks, while he was 16 - Gastão, not Federer :).
Injuries got to him, and prevented rapid success in the following years, but by the end of 2010 skies cleared for Gastão.
He is now coached by Jaime Oncins, former great Brazilian player, great support of Gastão's progression these last months.

He started the season outside Top-600, next week he will be into Top-300. Already won two Futures, got to the final of another. Got to the quarters of Bucaramanga CH and now is in SF of Guadeloupe CH, huge victories this week so far (Bollelli, Reister, Bohli). Next week Qualy of Miami.
I really think we'll hear a lot about him in the near future.

Go, Gastão, one of the rising stars of Portuguese tennis! :worship:

Is he better on HC or clay? This year so far he had the best results on HC.

Is he better on HC or clay? This year so far he had the best results on HC.

He can do well on both surfaces because in Portugal he was used to clay but then he went to IMG and it is basically Hard Court. He considers Hard Court is favourite surface but he can do pretty well in each one.

Let´s hope he finds his best form in clay, so that i can see him in Estoril, hopefully in the main draw with a very well deserved WC. He can get great advice from his coach, a good former clay courter. His rise this year has been impressive.

I really hope for a good clay-swing, including some challengers, Estoril (surely a WC for him!) and RG Qualy in it. But first, he has a great chance to score good points at Recife hard-courts, next week. The field is weak, only one player, Chiudinelli, from top-100 level in the draw, but coming from injury (I suppose, since he has retired from a lot of tournaments recently).

Go, Pepe!

Best of luck to Gastao in the clay season. Knew him from the junior days, when he and Berankis played a lot against each other. Rycka has said that Elias is his best friend on the tour and they have had lots of fun stories (like when Elias forgot the tickets to the Miami Heat game in a taxi). Good to see him climbing the rankings rapidly this year.

Deserved thread for a player with huge potential. I think he can end the season in top 150 (or top 120 at his best). Of course he will receive a WC to Estoril. And is only about 20 places from RG QD, witch is about 2 challengers wins, so I think there's no way Gastão will miss RG. For a guy statrted the season outside top 600, and in october was outrise the top 800, is completely abysmal!

Injuries was the only reason the he didn't to this good at the age of 17 or 18. But his still young, 20 years. I have so many faith in him. Top 50 in the future, al least, I think.

04-04-2011, 08:24 PM
I followed Gastao a lot when he was first coming up, but he never really made it. Good to see he's having a second wind, and not falling apart like a lot of other top talents. I think Top 150 is a good goal for him, but we'll see how well he does in the clay court season

The draw in Brazil opened up quite a bit with the Top seed and 6th seed both falling in the bracket on top of him.

04-07-2011, 08:16 AM
Gastao quit yesterday. Hard neck and a lot of heat took him down. He seemed also frustrated, since he lost several BP just before he quit. But his coach says he should be fine rapidly.
Let's hope so, and that this transition from futures to CH is sucessful.
Important clay season now!

He pulled out of Santos next week.

He's already in Portugal, training and hoping for a WC for Estoril Open.

Gastao did get the expected WC to Estoril. Wish him all the Best!

This is my blog about him. In Portuguese only, unfortunately.

Gastao just reached Belo Horizonte CH today, coming back from months on injury just weeks ago. His back are a problem for all his career, but let's Hope he deals with it well and reaches his potential, which is huge! Go Pepe, all the best for you!

10-08-2011, 12:49 PM
Hope Gastão wins today and my bet is he will finish Top-200 this seasn. Not bad, since he´s had another long injury.

11-11-2011, 10:16 PM
What a hell of a way to finish a season. Gil lost to his friend and my other portuguese fav, Gastao Elias, after holding two MP. But still, Gastao needed this points more, to secure Top 200 finish. What an amazing year for Gastao, appart from injuries, shitty year for Gil, only one very good tournament at Monte Carlo. But secured Aussie Open direct acceptance. And Gastao can play Aussie Open Q, if he chooses to. See you next year, Gil! Go Gastao!

11-12-2011, 02:21 PM
Pepê just did it! Won against Julio Silva. Important, it was his beast this year, took him down at a CH, at the beggining of Gastao's downfall and injury, and then at two finals. So, now into the final of Buenos Aires, in great form, and two good CH until the end of the season. Not impossible to finish the season in Top 150, even with two and a half months injured... Never forget he was around 750th a year ago. Go Pepê!

01-07-2012, 10:30 PM
Great start of season. Final of São Paulo CH, after beating Zeballos and in-form Del Bonis. Top-100 stuff? We'll see in a few months. Go Pepe!

01-08-2012, 05:36 PM
Gastao did well in Sao Paulo CH final, but in the end lost the two breakers. Great first serve, lots of aces, but lacks consistency (low percentage). Needs something more in that forehand to be a safe top-100 player. But I think that it's really possible to get there with this level of play. Go Pepe!

03-13-2012, 11:05 AM
Pepe is defending 55 points this week, and he needs to secure at least QF at the strong DallasCH to retain his Top-200 spot. He then basically defends nothing till September, so a lot of time to insist on this difficult transition to ATP level to see if he can handle it. Difficult February, lots of first round losses in close matches at ATP250 Qualies in South America. Curious to see how he does today against Mischa Zverev, important test. Go Pepe!

03-22-2012, 01:56 PM
Maybe he should have focused on Challengers this year to pick up experience and points that would stabilize him around 100th. He has nothing to defend in the following months due to his injury in 2011, so he has a good chance to climb up the rankings, but without forgetting that he's still very young and has still much to learn...

Enjoy watching Gastao, he's got flair, but he's willing to scrap when he needs to.

Some frustrating matches this year though like the Kavcic one in Florianapolis, he really should have taken that.

04-12-2012, 06:13 PM
Pepe just won in Blumenau. Decent match today. although not many winners, but decent first and second serve. Only third time this year he won two matches in Main Draw. Now, a real test against Capdeville (took Gastão down at Miami Q). Hope he makes it, he´ll be back at Top-200 if he does so, and he'll definitively earn his WC at Estoril.
Go Pepe!

06-08-2012, 09:24 AM
Gastão is doing really well in Caltanissetta CH this week. God wins over Lorenzi and Junqueira, now! I really hope (and expect) that he makes the Final here. Needs the points, needs the boost of confidence! He has all the conditions to secure a good second half of the season, to at least create to himself a strong Top-150 spot and attack Top-100. It's all on his mind, he clearly has the weapons. Go Pepe!

06-10-2012, 07:57 PM
Great week for Gastao. Robredo was too much for him, but still a CH Final is great, he'll be around 160th next week. Hope he gets back to ATP Qualies after Wimbledon, and to see him getting to Top150 quickly, and staying there at the end of the season.

06-11-2012, 07:14 AM
Great week for Gastão, he'll be defending nothing for the next months so if he does well he can climb up to 100-120. Go Gastão!!

07-11-2012, 06:46 AM
I expected more from Elias at this time of season. Yesterday he lost to Mektic, ranked below 300.

08-03-2012, 01:50 AM
Semi-finals in Tampere, not bad. Top-150 for the first time in his career.

10-22-2012, 09:57 AM
First Challenger title!!!

Hope it's the first of many, this title will stabilize Gastão's ranking for next year. :yeah:

Portugal’s Gastao Elias captured his first Challenger title of the season at the Peugeot Tennis Cup in Rio de Janiero, defeating Boris Pashanski 6-3, 7-5. The World No. 174 upset second seed Joao Souza and eighth seed Federico Gil en route to the trophy.

11-13-2012, 11:56 AM
Good solid season for Pepe! Another peak he climbed to success. Solid CH level performance.
Great start to the season, then an upset, when he decided to try to get to ATP level in February and March and failed, took a lot of confidence away from him. Also bad performance at GS qualies. He came back with decent results, from April onwards, and then a great end to the season, which secured him his first CH victory, and other very good results!
Now, on to 2013, to reach (and stay at) Top100.

Go Pepe!!!

11-24-2012, 10:32 PM
His season isn't over yet. He's on the Masters Challenger! Vamos.

11-25-2012, 09:19 PM
Let's see if he can surprise some...

Massive win for Gastao today. Now in the SF of São Paulo CH, defending last year's points. And winning against good player Thiago Alves, who beat him here last year in the final. Gastao sets himself as solid Top 125 player, must reach the final To show Top 100 material. Go Pepe!

01-05-2013, 04:29 PM
Gastao just lost his SF match in Sao Paulo. Solid through the match, spcially from 2nd set onwards. Great serving, but low 1st serve percentage. Needs backhand from the beggining of the match (I've seen this same problem other times), and needs much higher 1st serve percentage, even if 2nd serve is so good. Could use a bit more variety in his game, but this due to playing so much on clay, I´m sure.
But a pretty solid start to the season, he has it all to reach Top100, if he plays like this and delivers 1st serve at a much higher percentage. He has nothing to defend until the end of March. Now, Bucaramanga in the end of the month, and then probably all ATP250 South American Clay-swing in February.
Go Pepe!

04-30-2013, 06:37 PM
Gastao is nearing the TOP 100 with his 1st round win in Oeiras against Zeballos. Looks like he's about to break new grounds. Best of luck :yeah:

05-02-2013, 09:02 AM
Pepe has a decent chance to reach Portugal Open QF today, and to secure a near Top100 place (101st or 102nd). Nearing Wimbledon MD direct acceptance. Playing really well, solid matches on clay, for several weeks now. Great win in straight sets agians in-form Zeballos. I see him doing something decent through out the rest of clay season. Go Pepe!

05-02-2013, 10:06 AM
From earlier this year @ Delray Beach

05-02-2013, 03:29 PM
Well done, Gastão. Solid performance against Istomin, now he reached Portugal Open QF. He is now clearly a Top100 player, might do well at RG this year. Very solid mentally, and big improvement on his backhand. Go Pepe!

05-03-2013, 07:55 AM
He's 101th in the rankings right now. I think he'll make it to Roland Garros MD, right?

It's too late, the cut-off was several weeks ago. He should make it directly into Wimbledon though and the main thing is he's moving in the right direction.

[ESP] Gastao Elias - Un minuto con BATennis

07-26-2013, 01:41 AM
Not exactly tennis related, but tonight, Gastao Elias invited Rui Machado for a barbecue in his flat. Nice to see some union and friendship amongst portuguese players. Remember, both are recovering from injuries. Machado is training hard already to compete in 1 weekk time, Gastao is a bit more late in the process. Already with physical training, but still unable to practice tennis. Here are a couple of photos of the event.

08-12-2013, 06:26 PM
When Gastão will be back? :S
He will not play US Open

08-30-2013, 10:41 PM
Gastão is back on training. Will be back in Campinas.

Gastão Elias set to come back at the South America long CH swing. Hope he feels well. Go Pepe!

He had 4 match points, was way too passive though.

10-21-2013, 08:40 PM
Really don't know what has happened to his confidence lately.

There was this raquet change that made him get injuried and maybe he didn't quite adapt to it.

Hope he recovers well for the new season.

02-23-2014, 06:45 PM
Caught up with him @ Delray Beach again this year

02-26-2014, 09:31 AM
Gastão got some confidence from this last two tournaments, reaching MD in two ATP events. Now he rests, and then I suppose he will play some challengers in Panama and somewhere else. Back to decent form? Let´s hope so!

02-26-2014, 09:54 AM
Isn't he going to play IW? It is only natural after playing Memphis and Delray Beach, and after good performances.

02-26-2014, 10:01 AM
He is out of the Qualifying Entry-list. He secured a spot, after some withdraws, but I think he decided not to go back to America now. I thing next tournament is Panama City CH, or Miami Q, if he gets a WC.

05-01-2014, 10:19 PM
A main draw win over a red hot player like GGL in your home tourney is great progress. Nice work!
