If Stebe wins vs. Meffert tomorrow and reaches semi-finals in Guangzhou, he should get another SE, right?

No, only if he gets to the final because Guangzhou CH has a Saturday final. And to get a SE you have to be still in another tournament (Guangzhou) until Saturday. The day is the important thing, not the round... Unfortunately. But maybe they give him a WC if needed?

Well, as the semifinal was moved to Saturday, I guess this means another SE for Stebe :)

I don't really like Steve's draw. He's guaranteed a tough QF match.

Soeda always seems to get easy draws.

Stebe v Kudry is a great R1, as is Lacko v Bubka.

Please win the title Steve!

Interesting draw. On the upper half of the draw Soeda may find troubles on Ito in a potential QF. But I guess that Soeda should be one of the SF. On the 2nd quarter I think Kudryavtsev should beat a motivated but tired Stebe. Ignatik played well last week and I think that either Ignatik or Kudryavtsev might be taking that 2nd SF spot.

On the bottom half Bachinger is going to find think no so easy facing Udomchoke in 1st round, the winner of Rieschick-Goffin in 2nd round and possibly Peya or Darcis in QF. Difficult quarter to predict.
The last quarter is quite weak. Possibly Lacko or Bubka would reach SF.

Good luck for Di Wu, Soeda, Ito and Bubka.

What happened to Zhang? Pretty douchey to retire before a tiebreak, if you ask me. I'd rather he just finish it and tank the TB 0-7.

Wow, the Stebe train rolls on. Only three Germans here, and 2/3 in R1. Much better than Caltanissetta, where 3/4 Germans lost... and their one win was because he beat another German. ;)

Stebe wins another match: 7:5, 6:4 vs. Heliovaara

So now he gets another rematch, against Ignatik, who beat Middeloop 6:4, 7:5. I hope he gets his revenge and beats Ignatik this time. In this interview (http://www.tennisnet.com/deutschland/szene/herren/Senkrechtstarter-Stebe-Dass-es-gleich-derart-gut-laeuft-ueberrascht-auch-mich/1653463) Stebe said that he had eaten something wrong when he lost against Ignatik last week, that's why the loss was so clear.

If he wins, he'll face an opponent that he he has already beaten within the last two weeks: Either Soeda (6:4, 6:1 vs. Veic) or Fleming (4:6, 6:3, 6:4 vs. Brugues-Davi). Both were very close matches though.

Other results:
Bachinger - Goffin w.o. (is "Abdomen Tear" as serious as it sounds??)
Darcis - Sousa 6:2, 6:3
Sugita - Li 6:4, 3:6, 6:3
Lacko - Wu 6:0, 6:3

So even in the final there's a chance 2/4 that Stebe will face an opponent he has already beaten (Sugita or Lacko). Keep it up, boy!! :)

I actually like Go, but I don't consider him a legitimate top 100 player, and he gets most of his points playing weak events, and doesn't do a lot when he plays bigger ones.

Filo V.
03-26-2011, 02:51 PM
As far as Soeda himself, though, I like him. He's a professional guy, and he has an interesting game. But there are other guys I'd put ahead of him when discussing the top 100.

Filo V.
03-26-2011, 02:57 PM
Oh yeah, I wanted to say, to clear a couple of players that I've been outspoken against, I never legitimately disliked Mello. I've always liked him, but I didn't like the way he made the top 100 and he was beating my favorites.

As for Andujar, my dislike for him was real. I thought he was garbage on the court, and that he was immature with his emotions. But he's improved his game a lot and become a legitimate player. So, we'll see if Go can do the same. I lost a lot of my like for Michal P. and others because they made top 100 and expectedly failed. So we'll see if Go can last. He may not be top 100 for long as he's defending points coming up.

willoughby
03-27-2011, 04:59 AM
Soeda won 6-4 7-5 :yeah:

Filo, I agree that Go gets most of his points in weak events, but there have been a lot of players in the past years that have made the top-100 with a smart schedule and playing those weak Challengers (Przysiezny is the nearest example), anyway I found weird that you like Soeda but almost prayed for a Bachinger's victory yesterday.

Filo V.
03-27-2011, 05:49 AM
I need to see Go back this up before I can really get behind him. The reason I wanted Bachinger to win strongly was because if Soeda is going to be a top 100 player, I wanted him to earn it by beating good players outside of Asia, and he hasn't shown he's capable of this consistently, so therefore it sort of............takes away and cheapens the entire thing a bit in my eyes. There are some guys out of the top 100 who are ultra inconsistent but you know can challenge top 50 players on their days, can Go do that? There hasn't been much to suggest he can.

I'm not knocking Go for doing what he did to make the top 100, it's smart scheduling, he deserves it totally. But personally I need to see if this is real or he's just another point collector who fails and falls back. You don't really improve yourself playing players you should beat at basically home/near-home weak events every week, so I don't really agree with that strategy in making the top 100. Most players who do that almost always fail when playing good players.

Filo V.
03-27-2011, 05:59 AM
The only guys I can think of lately who have managed to stay near or at the ATP level playing weak challengers only are Lu, F. Mayer, and Marchenko. Almost every other player who did so failed. Golubev made his way into the top 100 winning big indoor challengers and now he's top 50. Same with Istomin, he started having big results in 100K and 125K events, and now he's top 60. Janko is similar, as is Berrer, Becker and a few others.

Guys like Michal P. who just play weak challengers never stay on tour. Lorenzi did it, now he's out. Galvani did it, now he's out. Koellerer did it, now he's out. Zeballos gained most of his points on weak challengers and has been barely good enough in ATP/high level challengers to keep a top 100 ranking for right now until his Houston points come off. We can go down the list. Udomchoke actually had decent performances at the ATP level, but he never managed to consistently keep a good ranking pre-injuries. But I hope the same isn't true for Go, I'd rather see him top 100 than other players who shall remain nameless.
