Think now's a good time to start a cheering thread for young Estonian Jurgen Zopp. Is currently having a big week in Bergamo, Italy making it through to the semis and disposing of Oli Rochus 6-2 6-2 along the way in the QF. Next up he plays Muller and there should be some big serving in this one.

Brief bit of background, he is 22 years old and the serve and forehand are his best shots. Currently at a career high ranking of 211 which will rise after this week.

Also coached by former Finnish player Pasi Virtanen and a medium paced hardcourt is his favourite surface.

Hewitt =Legend
02-13-2011, 12:37 AM
Zopp went down to Muller in the semis 6-4 7-6. Muller was serving out of a tree with 19 aces and Jurgen was under more pressure in his service games as a result. Good fight in the 2nd set but Muller was too good.

Next stop is the Wolfsburg challenger in Germany.

Hewitt =Legend
02-20-2011, 01:36 AM
Zopp has drawn Brydan Klein in the first round of Wolfsburg and faces a potential rematch with Muller in the 2nd round.

Hewitt =Legend

Jurgen is through to the 2nd round after Klein retired one game into their opening round match.

OMG you started a thread for my Estonian mug! :banana: :awww: He's been doing pretty well lately. :)
Next up Müller again or Bachinger.

Hewitt =Legend
02-23-2011, 02:08 PM
No more talking to myself :lol:

Disappointing loss today to Bachinger, 6-2 5-7 7-5. Zopp was down a set and 4-5 and saved 2 match points and ended up winning the 2nd. Then he had a match point on serve but Bachinger broke and proceeded to break again for the match.

MariaV
02-28-2011, 11:02 AM
Haha, it was called drama in Estonian media. :lol: :o But he probably played too much already.
Carrer high ranking at 194 this week. :D :banana:

Cheers for the pics Dalx.

Grigelis retired while up 5-4 in the 1st set against Jurgen so the tie is at 1-1. As always doubles will be crucial and Zopp/Berankis will be a good match, with Rycka obviously being the favourite.

Plays Clement Reix in the 1st round and a potential 2nd round match against Muller. Funny he has been drawn to play Muller at 3 tournaments this year already.

Muller is out, Jürgen has a good chance to reach to QF and get more points :)

Hewitt =Legend
03-25-2011, 06:50 AM
Jurgen got the better of Jouan, 6-4 6-4 to set up a QF match with Swedish qualifier Ervin Eleskovic. Great chance to make the semis.

Hewitt =Legend
03-26-2011, 12:06 AM
Zopp repeats the 6-4 6-4 scoreline in beating Eleskovic. Routine win and now plays Andi Beck who got up over Mahut.

Hewitt =Legend
03-26-2011, 11:34 PM
Jurgen went down to Beck 2-6 6-4 6-1 in the semis. Was up a break in the 2nd set but couldn't quite close it out. Still a good tournament for him.

Zopp is playing in the Athens Challenger this week and has drawn Karol Beck in the 1st round. Tough first match but he already has a good win over Beck this year so hopefully he can repeat the feat here.

Zopp is in Wimbledon qualies and has a favourable draw first up, against Gio Lapentti.

Hewitt =Legend
06-13-2011, 03:52 PM
Gio retired after Zopp was leading 6-1, 2-0. Can't take too much out of this one and will most likely play Ito in RD 2.

Hewitt =Legend

Good stuff to pull through in the end. Tough match now with Beck and best of 5 as well, would love to see him in the Wimbledon main draw...

Hewitt =Legend

Tough break for Zopp, going down in 5 to Andi Beck. Had a chance and was close to his first slam draw without playing in an atp event but it was not to be. There will be other chances, just has to move on and keep working hard.

MariaV

:wavey: For you (the only) Zopptard - he came home after the Asian challengers, talked to media. Short synopsis in English - he praised his coach Pasi Virtanen and said they're working together really well. He said his movement has improved a lot, his forheand has become more powerful, he expected to improve his serve more but the serve worked well enough at the challengers.
He said he'll try Stockholm and St Pete's qualies. :unsure:

Jurgen went down to Bernie 6-7(5), 6-4, 0-6. Great showing in the first couple of sets and he proved he can hang with the guys in the top 100 this week. Fell away in the third but that is only natural in your first ATP main draw. Here's hoping he can build on this and continue this fine run of form in the coming weeks.

Went to qualies and saw the match today, it was high quality stuff. Here's the summary that is in GM:

Jurgen Zopp Vs Uladzimir Ignatik

Was looking forward to witnessing this encounter from the moment I laid my eyes upon the draw. It had tremendous potential with the Belorussian Ignatik possessing all of the shots combined with being a headcase, and the Estonian Zopp who fights for every point and never gives up. Also some cracking surnames from both here as well. And the match certainly lived up to my lofty expectations. Ignatik was on fire for a set and a half, combining lethal serving with miraculous shotmaking. There was nothing Zopp could do, Ignatik simply refused to make an unforced error and was serving out of a tree. Didn't help that the Estonian was having a poor serving day at this point in time. Ignatik takes the opener 6-2 and opens up a 4-2 lead in the second before the light drizzle that had been falling since the commencement of the match turned into something heavier. Play was suspended for about an hour and it was exactly what Zopp needed to clear his head and devise a game plan to combat Ignatik's baseline domination.

The break didn't seem to bother Ignatik however, with the Belorussian easily holding serve again to go ahead 5-2. Zopp held easily and it was time for Ignatik to serve out the match. Up to this point Ignatik had barely made an unforced error but when you're serving for the match that all changes, even for the better players. He threw in a double fault and dumped a backhand into the net before he found his game again to hit some more winners to go up 40-30 and match point. Zopp saved the first match point after a long extended rally before hitting a courageous off forehand where Ignatik could barely get his racquet onto the ball. Back to deuce and Ignatik serves another bomb. 2nd match point. Another long rally before Ignatik hits a backhand long. Two more draining rallies and Zopp wins both of them to break back and get back on serve. Ignatik is pissed but there is more to come. Zopp holds again, but not without a fight with the game going to several deuces and the Estonian saving a third match point. He holds and then breaks Ignatik for the second consecutive time. He proceeds to serve out the set to 15. Ignatik is going nuts at this point, smashing his racquet on the chair and throwing his towel out of the court. Swearing to himself he buries his head in his towel then decides to take a comfort break just as they wer about to go back on. This is the thing with Ignatik, he has all the shots and was an excellent junior but he is a massive headcase and mentally he is not up to the week in week out grinds of the main tour.

He finally returns to the court and is looking calm and relaxed. Ignatik is back to making no errors and serving bombs. He puts more pressure on Zopp's service games and eventually breaks and holds his own serve until 5-3 again and once more he's serving for the match. And once more his game breaks down combined with Zopp fighting hard and not missing on the important points. Zopp saves another match point with some lucky netcords and shanks during a 30 shot rally. It goes to deuce again and Ignatik has another chance but Zopp refuses to miss and Ignatik makes the error. Zopp proceeds to break and Ignatik completely loses it. He throws his racquet at the fence and gives us the finger. I had planted myself down with about 10 rowdy Estonians and we were cheering loudly for Zopp to make it through. At the change of ends Ignatik is clearly getting coached, they were not even bothering to hide it and he receives a warning. Ignatik then got angry over the limited powerade flavours that were available. Deadset, the guys a complete nutter. But he somehow got himself composed to go ahead 30-40 on Zopp's serve to bring up his 5th match point. This was the best rally of the match. The pair trade heavy blows from the baseline before Zopp hits a forehand down the line and approaches the net. Ignatik hit the pass back down the line and the ball clips the tape and rapidly travels above Zopp's head. The Estonian shows quick reflexes to get the volley back deep into the court and Ignatik attempts a lob and Zopp successfully puts away the overhead. Ignatik loses it again, shouts at us and then his coach and then punches the back wall. Zopp holds and it is 5-5. The pair then both settle down and hold until 7-7 before Ignatik starts getting tired and calls for a medical timeout. There was nothing wrong with him, he was just physically and mentally spent. Zopp breaks and wins the match to 15 on his serve.

He showed tremendous fight and courage throughout and simply refused to miss when he was down match points on 5 occasions. The Estonians were happy as was I and Ignatik left the court swearing under his breath. Very entertaining and high quality stuff, probably the best match I've seen so far this week.

Saw the great man again, becoming quite the fighter:

Jurgen Zopp Vs Mathieu Rodrigues

The Estonians were back again, but it quickly became apparent they hadn't worked on their cheerleading skills overnight. The continuous yell of "Zopp Zopp Zopp Zopp etc" isn't the most creative chant in the book but I'll be damned if I wasn't going to sing it along with them. Rodriguez, the Frenchman that is clearly Spanish is a Verdasco lookalike and I got the impression he's good mates with the old mirror as well. First thing that struck me about this bloke - the second serve is definitely up there with the worst in the game. It makes Nieminen and Wozniacki look like Ivanisevic. Deadset, my Grandma could get more speed on the delivery.

Zopp opened up a 3-0 lead in what seemed like a couple of seconds before he completely imploded and forgot how to hit the ball over the net and in the court. Rodriguez has got no weapons and just gets everything back and this began to frustrate the Estonian immensely. Rodriguez won the next four games in a row before they both held serve to go into a tiebreak which the Frenchman took 7-4.

Zoppmeister upped the ante in the second, hitting through the court and putting pressure on the Rodriguez forehand which was definitely the weaker wing. Pretty routine here, Zopp takes the second 6-3. Games go on serve until 8-7 when suddenly Rodriguez rolls over in pain with cramps. He was yelling and screaming and the trainer had to be called. Second match in a row that this has happened to Zopp deep into the third. The next part is the funniest. Rodriguez limps back to the baseline and is about to serve at 40-30 when out of nowhere he throws in an underarm serve! Zopp, clearly caught by surprise, somehow manages to get it back into play before the Frenchman easily accounts for the short reply. The crowd, including myself, weren't to happy here and some people let the guy know this. Zopp saved a couple of break points at 9-9 before breaking for the match on his second opportunity with a crisp forehand volley cross court.

Zopp dropped his racquet to the ground and flung his arms over his head in celebration. He saluted the crowd that had stuck with him and then posed for a group photo with the Estonian contingent. Good bloke and hopefully he can qualify for his first grand slam tomorrow. One things for sure, he has definitely earned it.

At the match again, great to see him in the main draw. Here's the short report:

Zopp Vs Smyczek

Yes it was that time again where we were back at the Great Estonian Zopp's mission to make his grand slam debut. We were nestled in nicely again with the Estonians who had brought an extra flag this time but the classic chant was ever present. They were telling us that Zopp's coach couldn't afford to travel down with him so he was down here by himself so they decided to follow him around Australia, they were in Brisbane as well. Zopp starts off well and gets the early break, hitting some crisp winners and keeping the unforced errors to a low. Smyczek doesn't do much, just gets the ball back and waits for the error. Zopp wasn't making to many of those in the opener though, grabbing another break and serving out the set 6-2.

The start of the second was very similar with Zopp snatching another break and he would soon get the chance to serve out the match. But the thought of a maiden grand slam appearance crept into his head and it was all to much for him, conceding the game to love and proceeding to lose the next four games to surrender the set 7-5.

Zopp breaks again in the opening game of the third but fails to consolidate and it's back to 1-1. Good old Zopp in for another tough and long three setter it seemed at the time. But Smyczek lost his rhythm and Zopp capitalised and broke and held to take out the match 6-2, 5-7, 6-3. The man let out a huge roar of celebration and came over to us and gave us all a high five. Then took a photo with the Estonians who were kind enough to let us into the shot. Nice bloke and got a winnable draw in the 1st round taking on Aussie Wildcard James Duckworth. Should be on a showcourt, will be a great first match.

Lost at the W-S qualies to Jack Sock in the first rd 4-6, 6-7 (8). :sad: :(
He really needs to step it up. He has been in a slump for a while now after that great spring. :sad: Hmmm, I really don't know what it is, did he overplay in the spring, did things go too fast? But as you said, he hasn't played much lately and being a top pro means playing a lot. And like he didn't play a lot at the challengers? :shrug: Anyway, he better pull himself together for the USO, I wish him all the best! :bounce: :bigclap:

Plays Istomin in the first round. Pretty tough one and Istomin likes the US hardcourts. Hope he can put in a nice showing...

Such a good win, was not expecting it at all :lol: And if Berdych does get up over Goffin at least it will be on a televised court.

This was so unexpected for me. I woke up this morning and when I found out he won, I was extremely happy. He had a great season already but this win at GS makes it even much better. :yeah:

BTW, he is also playing doubles for the first time ever!
Last match on Court 14 Colin Fleming (GBR)[14] /
Ross Hutchins(GBR)[14]
vs.
Blaz Kavcic (SLO) /
Jurgen Zopp(EST)

Lost the doubles and lost to Berdych 1-6 4-6 2-6, but it was a great learning experience. :D I even saw the last set on ES. :)
Next up a Challenger in Luxembourg next week and then ATP tournaments in St. Petersburg and Bangkok. Good luck with all that travel.

Lost to PHM 6-7(2) 2-6 but that's OK.
In the interview on TV afterwards he said he has back pain. :scared: :unsure: So he'd probably need more rest but nothing new on his FB, says he'll play St Pete's. 1st rd vs Andrey Kumantsov of Russia so we'll see. Good luck! :bounce: :bigclap:

Jurgen has had a very good season :)
I wished he and Kaia could play Hopman Cup, but she has Brisbane :(

MariaV

:wavey: Kaia just had an operation on her heels so she won't go to Australia and defend her Brisbane title. :sad:

Jürgen said in a TV interview that he'll end the season, he has some stress fracture in the back so he needs to take a break for a month but hopes to get back to training in December and be ready for the new season. Best of luck to him, agreed this season was good, hopefully he can even improve next year. :)

:) Great season for Jurgen, though...He should finish the year barely inside the Top 100 which was his goal I believe...He should get direct entry into the MD of the AO:wavey:...Hope he recovers during the off-season and comes back strong in 2013:)

Hi Jamie, yes it was his goal initially.

He went to Finland for some rehab, in a newspaper interview he wasn't that positive any more, he was kinda depressed that he cannot play and now said that he probably won't be able to practice on court till January and he'll miss all the preparation for the season. :shrug: I so wish he can start the season in Australia well.
He admitted he had exceeded his own expectations but all the positives were dampened by this silly injury, he said he didn't even understand how he could've gotten that stress fracture i.e. what he had overdone or so. But the other positive thing is he praised Pasi Virtanen again and said they'll work together next season too so that's good, he said they pass together really well. :D

JamieMU30
11-16-2012, 06:44 PM
That is sad that he can't practice until January:sad: Will he be ready for the Australian Open? I really hope he doesn't withdraw:sad: Do you which tournaments he is playing before the AO? I am assuming none...It would be great if he could win a round at the AO, but I am worried that since he hasn't played in so long, he will struggle to find form at the beginning of the season...He should enter the bigger indoor hardcourt challenger tournaments in Europe in January and February...I really hope that Jurgen has a good 2013 and moves up the ranks....I would hate to see him regress because of a stress fracture...Ironic that him and Kanepi are both injured at the same time and missing out on play during the AO and it's warm-up events

Disappointing news for Jurgen, hopefully he can overcome this injury and he doesn't damage himself further. He has started off the season in Brisbane the last couple of years but I imagine that would be doubtful now. He shouldn't rush back if he doesn't know what is up with the back. Hopefully the rehab goes smoothly for the rest of the year and then we'll know more as the new year draws closer...

Jürgen was of course the best male tennis player in Estonia in 2012 and he also got the Fair Play prize from the Estonian Tennis Federation. :D Pasi Virtanen was the best coach.
Jürgen and Kaia did a presser & signing this week.

Absolutely devastating news I read in our paper today, people! :bigcry: :sobbing: I cannot even write straigth. :tears: Turns out the stress fracture has goten WORSE!!!!!! :help: So he has to wear a corset and not move the back at all, not even swim. And he'll probably be out for another 3-4 months. They say it didn't get worse bc of what he did just that the injury had a 'long period of development", not that I get any of it. :o And Jürgen says he just wants his life back. :bigcry: :sobbing: I knew last year was too good to last. *going on crying now*

Really feel for Jurgen, was just starting to solidify his place in the top 100 and now it looks like he will miss the first quarter of the year. The main thing is that he takes all the time he needs to recover 100%, then he can work on getting back to where he was before this injury.

JamieMU30
01-06-2013, 06:57 AM
That is so awful to hear....3-4 months is horrible...Just when he was steadily moving through the Top 100 :( Now his ranking will plummet...Hope he doesn't lose too much ground in the rankings and gets back very soon...Get well, Jurgen :)

He was at the opening of the new fitness centre at one of our tennis centres. He said the back has improved but still not well. Some doctors say he can play in 2 months, some that it will take much longer. So it's impossible to predict more exactly. He just wants to get well first and doesn't worry about the ranking any more, he's wearing the corset and doing special excercises atm. His 'dream' is to be back for RG but we'll see.
In one interview last week he said he hopes to start tennis practice in April. I just wish him all the best.

Also today's photo for his fangirlsboys here. ;) Not too fond of the new short haircut but he still looks cute. :awww:

I was really hoping he would break through further into the Top 100 this year:( So sad that he will lose so many points from the clay season which he played pretty well last year..This must have been one hell of a back injury...Serious stuff considering those can be career ending a la Safina :( Poor, Jurgen

Hi Jamie! :wavey:
Not only Safina, many players have back problems, even the GOAT Federer. Marat Safin also had back issues in 2001 after playing too much, don't know exactly if it was a stress fracture. Zopp has a stress fracture of the 5th vertebra.

Hewitt =Legend

Stress fractures to the back are one of the most frustrating injuries in sport. Simply can't do anything for months. The ranking doesn't matter for the moment, just have to get healthy and then hopefully it will take care of itself. Just unfortunate that all his hard work over the last couple of years has come undone.

Cheers for the updates Maria :bigwave:

Thanks Maria :wavey: I feel bad for him, just when he was breaking through...When he does come back, he will have to start all over playing Challengers:sad: Will he qualify at all for a PR? If he is out for six months, he should be eligible for one, right?

Of course he will get a PR.

I hope the recovery is going well. It looks like he will need to get in shape as well; it's easy to gain some pounds if you can't do anything. He was having such an amazing year too :(

After 5 and a half months, Jürgen is finally able to play some tennis again. He doesn't serve or move around a lot but at least he can hold a racket and do something with it. Tests show that he is recovering well but he don't know when he can return to tour. Still feels some pain during the practice but physically he is in good shape, he has done workout a lot recently.
