Aurora

Yeah, what I have seen of Andreev looked very pleasing. Can't wait to see more of him, may he be a contender in the future. If Marat can get to semi, that would be a good, steady performance. Getting beyond Roddick would be better, and then I'll be sure he means business for the rest of the season.

Hey, a FBI T-shirt! I love those (mine has FBI on the back though). And really, he's the only man in my book except for Johnny Depp who can get away with that kind of facial growth.

I'm totally excited for this tournament! Hope he is psyched up to show his best tennis...

Hi.Today I went to his match as well. Marat played great. He hit the ball well, very hard and many nice winners. His BH is doing really great, but still have some problems with his FH.Most of the errors come from that side. All the people in the court cheer for him. Okun was jealous at Marat, he asked the crowd to cheer for him too, very funny. After the match, Marat wave and wave to the crowd and sign some autographs. One of the fan{Thai people who went to Davis Cup and wear Thai dress and wave Thai flag, real cheering guy}Marat know him as well, they hug after the match how nice!!. Marat said they are friends. Marat didn't face any BP today.Very good. I'm far away from him today, the ticket is too expensive for the courtside.I'll be there tomorrow as well.

Russia's Safin is back in business

Published on Sep 30, 2004

Four years after being the world’s No 1 player then slumping to the bottom of the top 100, Russian star Marat Safin is sending signals that he is back in business.

He beat Israel’s Noam Okun in his first round match at the Thailand Open yesterday.

The former world No 1 and 2000 US Open champion, who also won the China Open earlier this month, has claimed seven consecutive matches in straight sets, improving his record to

3-0 against Israeli Okun, ranked 148.

The temperamental Russian, who had an injury-plagued year last year, dropped out of top 50 for first time since 1997. His form slumped and he fell to No 89 in the world at the start of the season.

Being overshadowed by his successors including Andy Roddick and Roger Federer, the 24-year-old Safin fought hard and clawed his way back into

the top 10 two weeks ago at

No 9.

He has appeared in three finals in 18 tournaments this year. Among those finals he won the Beijing Open nearly two weeks ago, his first trophy in two years.

“What I did is fight. I just fight and put a lot of effort in every match I play,” Safin told reporters after his match at the Impact Arena last night.

Safin, who has vowed never to play on the grass courts at Wimbledon, again, is determined to finish the year within the top five.

“It was four years ago and I couldn’t remember what I played to make me the world’s No 1.

“You have to be confident to win a game. You can’t win if you are not confident,” added Safin, who would like to make sure that world No 1 Roger Federer won’t have an easy task winning this tournament.

“There’re many good players here in this tournament. It’s difficult to say anything as every match is important. I’ll focus and work it out match by match.

Whenever I win, I gain confidence.

It’s boosted me and I love it when I feel that way.”

In other first round matches, Swede Robin Soderling dealt Israel a second defeat at the Impact Arena as he beat Harel Levy 6-3 6-4.

Russian seventh seed Igor Andreev failed to match the tempo, taking a loss to Dutchman Rogier Wassen 6-1

6-2.

Marat and Vanek have never played each other. Is Vanek mainly a doubles specialist?

maratski
09-29-2004, 08:10 PM
I think he is Jessi. This positive attitude of Marat is seriously scaring me. I know he has found his confidence again, but I'm afraid of believing what Marat says lately so it might be just me.

Jessi
09-29-2004, 08:57 PM
well, i'd rather he have a positive attitude than a negative one...but, i know what you mean, i get a little wary too. Marat has a knack for saying all the right things so you've gotta take it all with a grain of salt ;)

I think Marat is confident but not overconfident. He's talking about taking it one match at a time and taking each opponent seriously, which is what he needs to do!

I agree. what he does is more important than what he says.
really I hope he could keep this positive attitude for a longer period. I prefer he is confident even is overconfident if he wins some top rank players. after all, it gives him courage to win more matches.
in fact, in china open, his serious attitude was the most impressive thing. many fans like him cos that.

on the contrary, i really expect him to play against ANDY or ROGER, andy has played against ROGER this year many times, but MARAT still didn't have many chances to play them. so , anyway, if he wins, he'll be more confident and that match is sure to be very important for him. if he lost, people'll see the difference and marat'll have more motiviation to improve it. that's my point

junekidd
09-30-2004, 09:46 AM
I am also looking forward to his playing with andy or roger. IMO, he could win andy more easily than AO this year. cos he holds more confidence now. maybe in semi final we could watch that great match! :)

from the atp site

Safin: “I'm happy with my game and I have enough confidence to play this kind of tennis. I am aiming to make the Tennis Masters Cup at the end of the year. The tournament win in Beijing pushed me up and I have a lot of confidence, so there is a different situation. Before Beijing I did not think I would win a tournament this year, but now I have to keep this rhythm as confidence and motivation is hard to get.”

“For every player, they need confidence. If you have confidence you enjoy being on the court, if you have no confidence then it gets to your head. I was number one four years ago, and this year I started at 89, now I'm in the top 10. Which is not bad, it’s a good jump, especially when I was injured last year. You comeback by trying, you fight all day with everything you have. If you lose matches, you lose your confidence. If you win matches, you keep your confidence, it's as simple as that.”

“I'm surprised the people here really love tennis. They are so happy, so enthusiastic, and I'm surprised they like me.”

:woohoo: Still going strong!
But you're right gals, he has to prove himself against the top ten players. He'll get a chance this tournament, unfortunately immediately against Roddick. I'm curious as hell for that one!
And the positivism... first title in two years, if that doesn't build confidence, what will? I'm sure he knows the big test is still ahead. And now he can look forward to it without reserve.

Thanks for digging up the pics Andrea and Bea .

8 match points Marat!? :retard:

Russia's Safin needed eight match points to end some late resistance from Vanek at the Impact Arena. "It wasn't my day to close out the match," he said. "He was trying hard and didn't lose his opportunities. It was very close." The win puts Safin a step closer to claiming back-to-back titles, after he won the China Open earlier this month.

Safin: “He (Vanek) was trying, he didn't lose opportunities, he had break points but I served well. He tried hard until the end. Saretta is a clay-court specialist but he can play good. This is not his best surface so hopefully I can do something.

hi everyone!! yesterday was unbelievable for me i sat in the VIP courtside front row!!!! I saw all his reaction on his faceeee so nice feeling :) maybe it was the best ever! after his match i was waiting him again at shuttle bus area but staff said he was at Samsung booth for a bit interview and signed some autograph for fans so i went there...and got his autographs on ball, tickets. after that i hurry ran to shuttle bus area again after that not so long he came with an strawberry icecream and something i guess it was banana. in this another and his mouth .. so we about 6-7 people asked him for taking a foto with him one by one and our nice marat said yes! so i took a couple pictures with him So GREAT!! i 'll pose them later......:) today i think i will go to see him play again.. report to you all later! owww..... one of the girl got his shirt it's very big big size :) so jealous hehe.... later byee:)

hi guys...well can't remember what I reported last time...but basically Marat is playing really well at the moment. I've been to all his matches so far and he's doing so well...I hope he beats Saretta tonight...will definitely go and watch it. He has been really sweet...chatting a bit and I was able to get another pic with him which was nice!!! The other day he was in the players' lounge eating satay and drinking beer!! haha...and yesterday in his match he turned up with one of his practice shirts inside out for the match...apparently the shirts Adidas had sent were too small for him...but Amit finally sent him a proper one halfway through the match!! Anyway, he's due to be coming through here in a sec so I must be off!!! Will try and report back later if I can!!!

Yep, big time. He'd better be able to perform his best tennis, win or lose. And that should normally mean winning, unless Roddick comes with something I haven't seen him do yet. Gotta keep the confidence. Losing against Federer wouldn't matter. Winning from Roddick will be the key for the rest of the season.

I wish I could see it too. Internet can get you much, but not everything (yet).

Just short report. He played so well. Obviously with much confidence. Still had errors on FH. There were 3 Russian guys sat near me. They cheered Marat with Russian language all the time. Now, I clearly knew how "Safin" was pronounced in Russian :). During the changeover, Marat looked up to these group. :) Anyway, I wasn't lucky to get his autograph or took photo with him. Hope he wins tomorrow. The crowd may cheer Roddick louder because of the hype in the media here. There were the aunction before Marat's match for the players' rackets, shirts, sneakers. Roddick's racket was aunctioned in the much higher price than Marat's.

Hey, I just remembered an interview with David in which he said that one of the funniest moments he lived during a tournament was with Marat a few years ago in Miami. Apparently Marat invited him to a ride in a Mercedez he got from the company. The thing is that Marat crushed the car and the company was really pis** at him, but he made such a huge scandal that he got away with it. David couldn't say much of it cause he was laughing while he said it, but it seems that what Marat did was really funny...

Hi, just some report from today. Marat didn't started very well. He hit many of them long at first. Then his game was on and his groundstrokes are just amazing very deep and hard, serve well, Saretta can't do anything. Marat control his emotion very well,he just bounce his racket once this week very good. I didn't saw the last two games, because I quickly ran and wait for him at the exit door. Only the first 15-20 people can get there!! I was so nervous. Then he walked into the exit way and he stopped infront of me gosh!! nervous. He sign me is autograph, but only the Marat part, because so many people. I said to him best of luck. I don't know he heard that or not, so noisy. He turn to me and I give out my hands, he grab my hand and shake it for few seconds.WOW!! He is so huge, his hand too!! I look at his face very carefully, he is pale. He's wonderful!!!!! This is the first time I saw him that close. I'll go tomorrow too and wish him best of luck.

what the players said from atptennis.com:

Safin: “I am full of confidence, I'm feeling comfortable and I have finally found my game. Now that I've finally found my game, I'm playing the game I want. ”

“Roddick will be tough, he's had a great year, he's won tournaments, he's confident, he has a big serve and he is volleying well. It’s going to be very close and it will come down to two points in which could go either way. There is one strategy, return his serve, take your opportunities, go for shots, look to put pressure on him and look for something extra as he is very confident. ”

“I have no injuries and hope that it will stay like this until the end of my career. For me to stay in the Top 10 is satisfying and I will try and improve my ranking. ”

Just wanted to say how sorry I am about Marat's loss - better luck next time Marat! Like Jazz I am a David fan, and I was a bit scared to post here before because of the past "history" between David and Marat fans, - but everyone seems so friendly here :) It's so good to see Marat playing well, regaining confidence and climbing back up the rankings where he belongs.

I'm not too disappointed with this loss...I knew some people here were too confident.. ;)
He's back ...That's the most important...
He finally found his game but still needs to improve...he needs time...
I'm happy because he fought well...and it was so close...I'm sure next time will be the good one.

and to tell the truth I prefer to see him winning in Moscow..

Yes I know I'm lucky Merle. I couldn't afford to do it when I was a student, so I'm taking every opportunity I have now! We never know what's waiting round the corner do we? If I lost my job or decided to start a family I wouldn't be able to travel, so I'm taking every opportunity that I can!

yes its a step foward, before it was disaster. Im happy he is off the deep hole he was in. But please, you cannot say he is back. The match would have gone totally different. We couldn`t really judge from his wins over these players the last weeks, until today he played Roddick. It is a long way back.
I hope people (who get overexcited easily) will see this.

andrea, I know you didn't blame him. as for be back, maybe he has not been, but still he has improved a little compared with earlier months. IMO, if he is really back, he is perfect marat! I hold that his performance on TB today proved again that he has sth to do with his mentality and the capability of grasping the key points.

here is a report from someone on worldtennis on worldcrossing: (THANKS, hope its ok i post this here)

I just watched 3rd set . MArat hold all his serves toLove except maybe one to 15. Too many UE on retruned game but he had a chance on Roddick serve at 4-all but again erors. Roddick took a risk at tiebreak and it paid off, Marat on the contrary tries to play safe and lost. He won one point on Roddick serv in that tiebreak at 6-1 when he had nothing to lose. Commentators said he played better than ROddick thouout the match, but Roddick aggressive play in the last tiebreak won him a match.

Statistics:

MS AR

FSP 61% 61%
A 17 17
DF 1 7
W 14 12
UE 23 20
BP 0/1 0/1

Well, at least MArat learn how to hold his serve, next step to learn how to win tiebreaks:-)

To tell you the truth, I think Marat just has problems with three setters.

you think ;)

Back when he wasnt injured he was the most consistent in terms of GS performances...3/5 gives him time to lose his concentration and come back, whereas he doesnt have that time in a 3 setter, ,if he loses it he loses the match

Personally I'm not dissapointed at the moment. It's too bad he lost, but if you look at it from the other side, he can evaluate and see what the difference is between a top 10 player and a top 5 player.

Safin: “This kind of match is like a lottery. I felt like he didn't feel any pressure because he went for his second serve a lot, and I just couldn't create anything. I took my opportunities, I tried everything, I played my game, there were very close points on his serve, but he went for it with no pressure. If one or two points went differently it would be a different story. He probably doesn't feel pressure because he's qualified for Tennis Masters Cup and he made semis here and probably wasn't worried too much about losing.”

“If I could make Tennis Masters Cup, that would be great, but I have achieved my goal by making it back into the top 10.”

he lost to roddick 6-7 7-6 6-7 great match for everyone He did so well i was shouting for him all the time.He threw the racket twice ( i'm not sure) but he stopped himself not to throw the racket many time (and everytime he was look like going to throw it ,many people were like "ahhh... safin don't clam down!!" . Anyway he 's so nice.. he gave his racket, his wristband to fans after the game and then at shuttle bus area he came up to fans who were waithing for him with a smile on his face ( feeling so good to see him not much upset with the result) he's still nice to his fans he gave his two hands for fans to touch him for a while before he got on his van!!! he's so sweetttt everyone!!! nice to see him in oerson once in the life time....:)
