If Flavio had to draw one of the top seeds, then Souza is not too bad a match-up. Let's hope the Brazilian has one of his frequent erratic days.

Tough draw for Schoorel :( And not so easy for Marco in Q3.

I must say, it is a terrible matchup for Souza. He will have a hard time dealing with Cipolla's slices.

I see Dutra Silva with the best chances among the Brazilians.

can someone clear something up for me? i see that like kavcic is number 1 seed and kendrick pulled out of the qualies but what happens if someone pulls out of the main draw in the next few days? As kendrick is the top player in the list who hasnt entered the qualies , does he get the next place in the MD as people like kavcic, dimitrov are actually particiating in the qualies

It will go to a Lucky Loser, someone who participated in qualies but lost (in the last round, I believe). Kendrick has zero chance of playing.

Very surprised about Saville's lost to Mahut, i watched Saville play Peter Luczak at the wildcard play off and he lost in a close three setter would of expected at least a few more games, oh well also Banes not bad result.

Arnau Brugues-Davi in third round. Who saw this coming?

me. I said to watch out for him

Filo V.
01-14-2011, 10:01 PM
A lot has happened so far even though day 2 was canceled! Exciting qualifying so far. I have a lot of personal notes to share:

-I'm so sad that Grigor and Koubek were drawn each other, and Bolelli and Massu. Two of my main faves ain't going to qualify. I think I want Stefan and Simone, but I wouldn't really fret whoever makes it. Schoorel has a good shot at taking out Stefan in R2.

-Millot has really stepped his game up. I never thought highly of him, but he's shown me he can be a decent player at the upper levels. Polansky v Millot should be a nice R3 match. Speaking of Polansky, great win for him over I thought a darkhorse player in Huta-Galung.

-Marco G., what's happened to you? He may really be done. I'm shocked he's started the season so poorly. Losing to Lisnard, as much as I like him, is a wholly unacceptable result.

-With Gicquel losing, The Don has a clear path to qualify. He should be able to get it done.

-Raonic is another guy with a nice draw to qualify. He'll be extremely dangerous if he makes the MD.

-Muller has won two tight matches in qualifying. Pospisil has become a very good player. That will be a tight match, hopefully Gilles wins!

-Nielsen KILLED AHM in qualifying, shocking result, biggest surprise of qualifying. Possibly injury related I think, since AHM played a long match the day before. Freddy has really stepped up his game of late. But Mahut should be too strong for him in R3.

-Brugues-Davi, I checked him out and he's a nice talent, college kid. Stadler presents a good shot at qualifying for him.

-Sweeting has played two very good matches. Playing Kuznetsov should be a tough one, but if he plays well, I think he wins.

-Great win for the fiesty Bogomolov over Chiudinelli. Surprised Marco C. lost after his performance v Roger in Doha.

My predictions for today:

Jones v Bozoljac
Polansky v Millot
Udomchoke v Zemlja
Capdeville v Ouanna
Van Der Merwe v Lisnard (Expecting the magic to continue)
Muller v Pospisil (Will be a tight match)
Massu v Kravchuk
Nielsen v Mahut
Young v Brizzi
Sweeting v Kuznetsov (I want Ryan, but I'm picking Alex in the upset)
Kavcic v De Voest (50-50 match. I'll say Kavcic b/c of confidence)
Gremelmayr v Greul
Bolelli v Crugnola (Prove me wrong, Simone)
Cipolla v Bachinger
Robert v Veic
Stadler v Brugues-Davi
Kim v Martin
Hernych v Sugita (50-50 match)
Reynolds v Janowicz
Dimitrov v El Amrani
Mektic v Raonic
Schoorel v Koubek (I'm picking Thomas, but this is 50-50)
Dancevic v Korolev (Best match-up in terms of names, I like Korolev big)
Lojda v Dutra Da Silva
Bogomolov Jr. v Alves

Jones v Bozoljac

Nielsen v Mahut
Young v Brizzi

Kavcic v De Voest
Gremelmayr v Greul
Bolelli v Crugnola
Cipolla v Bachinger

Reynolds v Janowicz
Dimitrov v El Amrani
Mektic v Raonic
Schoorel v Koubek
Dancevic v Korolev
Lojda v Dutra Da Silva
Bogomolov Jr. v Alves

frank is coming back around, no way he loses to this korolev

i also think nielsen has been playing very well here so far, he has b lown away his first 2 opponents so i pick him for the upset here

i think grigor will win but i dont think his match will be as easy as everyone thinks

Filo V.
01-14-2011, 11:02 PM
I 100% agree with Grigor, Misty. I actually think El Amrani has a good shot at the upset. My first instinct was to say upset, but I changed my mind. We'll see what happens.

Korolev I think is a bad match-up for Frank. Also he's motivated since he's defending a lot of points. It depends on how each serves.

I wouldn't be surprised if Nielsen wins but Nicolas is a monster and he's been almost unbreakable by everyone outside of Murray these past few weeks. I don't see Nielsen winning enough return points.

The Bozo-Jones match will be really interesting, I only picked Jones because of the Aussie factor. We all know Bozo can play top tier tennis when he's going well, so we'll see.

Matches should be starting in an hour, right?

Filo V.
01-14-2011, 11:04 PM
I'm really conflicted on Sugita-Hernych. I think Sugita could win like 6-2 6-4, but then I think Hernych could win in 3 sets. I just don't know how that will play out. I think it will be a break fest.

misty1
01-14-2011, 11:50 PM
grigor takes the first set 6-3

he definately seems motivated..i know how much he's been dieing to play the grand slams.

reda served a whopping 5 double faults in the first set alone

misty1
01-15-2011, 12:04 AM
reda has served 7 double faults

straight sets for grigor which is a shame because this should have been a real test for him

Filo V.
01-15-2011, 12:10 AM
The test will come in R3. He could use some match practice, but he does seem to be playing well.

Hopefully Grigor can hold this lead and take the match.

Filo V.
01-15-2011, 12:10 AM
Schoorel took the first set, disappointing but not surprising. Hopefully Stefan fights but he'll probably be blown out in the second set.

Schoorel v Dimitrov would be a nice R3 qualifying match.

grigor is on a mission thats for sure

Filo V.
01-15-2011, 12:42 AM

misty1
01-15-2011, 01:02 AM
...he's played a major before

i just think that he was so close to getting in as an alternate that its kind of driving him further to make sure he qualifies

Filo V.

Oh yeah, the Wimbledon where he retired.

I think he wants to give himself a proper chance at playing in a major, the motivation from almost winning that match at Wimbledon before injuring himself.

And I agree, nearly making it as an alternate, working so hard at the end of last year to make the AO, he's not going to be denied now.

Filo V.

im not saying he hasnt got talent but im just confused here with you

Filo V.
01-15-2011, 02:06 AM
I wasn't impressed by him, but I reviewed some tape of his. He's got a lot of potential. He needs to move better, but he's got a big forehand, decent net, decent slice BH, and his drive BH has improved a fair bit.

I was being too judgmental and I didn't like the fact he beat some of my favorite players. But in retrospect I was too quick to knock Raonic. He's definitely a decently talented kid. And he's what..........20? He's not an AMAZING talent, but he's got raw talent to work with. I'm interested in seeing how he does going forward.

Filo V.

i have predicted an isner like career for him

in that i mean he will be able to beat alot of guys because of his serve alone(which will be incredibly annoying) but he'll fall to guys who know how to handle him, much like isner does.

he'll also be a threat in smalller tournaments but fall in bigger tournaments and the furthest he'll ever go in a grand slam is QF

he'll win..5 titles tops unless he competes mainly in 250 tournaments

fair to say you think?

I think that is very fair, and he has a game very similar to Isner's. I think he has a bit more game than Isner does, since he's better at the net and has a better slice, the question will be if he can develop from the back of the court and become a passable mover as Isner is. We'll see what happens, but that's a good estimation.

Millot def. Polansky 6-3 6-2

Millot into the MD.

Of course he is. Peter just rolled over. Millot served about 40 % in the first set, but he still won 6-3! Peter had a very poor performance. Too bad it was on the last day of qualifying after two good matches. Oh well..
