Canada defeated Belarus 2-1 today, so they will play Italy for 9th place. I didn't get a chance to go today, but hopefully tomorrow.

Some video against Spain yesterday.

I think there's only one explanation for this. "IMG" That's why ATP releases such meaningless news like 'Tomic signs up for Kuala Lumpur or Brisbane.' :o

so i found out tomic wc was a trade for the wc given earlier this year in miami to milos, so i guess img is behind this

rogers cup news:

vasek draws juan ignacio chela in the first round

erik drew dolgopolov

tough draws for both considering that dolgopolov has found his form again and chela has been in good form all year

also i should say that gulbis got the wild card left vacant by bester's withdrawal..say about that what you will

there are just 2 canadian men in the main draw and im not sure how many are qualifying but if there are any and they do qualify here are the possible opponents:

davydenko
troicki
mannarino
tomic
lopez
verdasco
simon

pretty damn harsh placement for qualifiers..i guess the best ones would be davydenko or mannarino..maybe tomic

should mention that IF erik or vasek get past the first round berdych awaits erik in the 2nd round and roger awaits vasek in his 2nd round.

canadian women got these:

wozniak v.s peer - would have been great for aleks if this event was 3 weeks earlier because shahar had been in a terrible slump but regained her form last week

marino v.s makarova - unknown. Makarova can be extremely dangerous but she can also be total crap. However rebecca might not be 100%

dubois v.s Q' - hard to say until we see who it is..but steph retired recently so who knows how she'll be

bouchard v.s perkovic - tough for genie. If petko plays well she's got no chance at all

An advantage for Vasek is that Chela just lost today in Europe on clay, so he doesn't have much time to adapt to the time change and different surface. Not that I would expect to see Vasek actually win, but at least it might help to make the match more competitive.

Dolgopolov's made the AO QFs this year beating Soderling and Tsonga, and Chela is a former USO quarterfinalist.
With this being said, Pospisil might have an outside chance.

thats a very good question

a number of the strong qualifiers(gulbis, stakhovsky, isner, mannarino, gonzalez ) got into the main draw on withdrawals or other reasons. Whats left is just awful though

Yes, I guess that makes sense. It would have been a relatively decent draw if they had all been in.

I wonder why Tennis Canada didn't just throw their QWCs to some of the NTC players or recent graduates; I remember they gave Krainik one a couple of years ago. Seems strange that they'd just give them to seemingly random players instead.

Just got back from the Rogers Cup.

I found Duclos much more confident in his manner than I remember him two years ago. He was getting a lot of support from the crowd, which he seemed to appreciate (last time I felt he didn't really connect at all). He came out very aggressive and looked the stronger player at the beginning of the first set. I was worried about him holding serve when he was 4-5 down, and while he did end up being broken, I give him credit for hanging in there and saving many set points with some terrific play. It is nice to see someone doing a lot of serve and volley, although when Ebden got into a groove of passing him, I thought it might have been time to change something.

I didn't get to see much of Diez as they had kindly programmed the two Canadians to play at the same time, and as you saw, if you blinked, you missed Diez's match. I just saw the last few games, three of which he actually won. He looked quite deflated and was probably hoping that the thing would be over soon. That might have relaxed him and helped him do a bit better - though he didn't look relaxed in serving.

Duclos was upset at not receiving Bester's WC it seems, he said after his match today:

"I had no information. I would have appreciated that Eugene Lapierre would have sent me a text or something" because he learnt from other players that Gulbis was the one who got the WC.

He said that it was a big mistake and that it was bad for Canadian tennis not to have given a MD WC to Frank.

And he added "Gulbis and Tomic are good players, yes, but we should help our Canadian players. But it's okay if they (Tennis Canada) don't want me."

I don't know that Lapierre's comments were directed so much at Duclos' case. My guess is that the unspoken part there is that Duclos wasn't going to get one because he pissed them off last year when they did give him a MD WC by spending the week before in China.

We are talking about a top 50 player here, clay specialist or not.

been hitting with top 100 guys last few days i and i was pretty impressed with andujar hard court game, takes the return extremely early and will hug the baseline given the right oppurtonity doesnt play your typical old school passive clay court specialist game and doesnt give a inch out there. His serve is abit of a weakness on hard but returns insanely well. Very encouraging for erik that he has been hanging and beating top 100 players this week even if its practice he has never had the chance to play with this competition before.

155 Pospisil, Vasek (CH !) (at start of yr: 339)
181 Dancevic, Frank (CH 65) (at start of yr: 269)
257 Bester, Philip (CH 229) (at start of yr: 278)

324 Duclos, Pierre-Ludovic (CH 259) (at start of yr: 433)

Congratulations to both Vasek and Erik on new career highs.
Also:
Hugo Di Feo (b. 1995) enters the rankings with his one point from Saskatoon.
Pospisil at doubles CH of 115

Good to see that, with the unfortunate exception of Polansky, all our top 500 players have improved their ranking from the beginning of the year.

Shout out also to Aleks Wozniak who climbs 50 places with her Vancouver title.

Injury roster:
Milos – hip – retired 22 June Wimbledon
Frank – back – last played 21 June Wimbledon; ready to play wk of 1 August, now out with bronchitis (and wounded ego)
Philip - hand – last played 10 July Davis Cup
Peter – groin – last played 13 June Wimbledon qualies

To mark the fact that our two guys born in 1990 now top the Canadian rankings, I worked out the highest ranked players born in 1990.

Unless I am missing someone, the top 5 are:

26 Milos Raonic CAN
134 Ricardas Berankis LTU
140 Jerzy Janowicz POL
150 Cedrik-Marcel Stebe GER
155 Vasek Pospisil CAN

We might as well enjoy that as, needless to say, we have nothing remotely comparable in any other year of birth.

I heard some of a short interview Pokrajac did with radiotennis.com after his match Monday. Said he was comfortable on clay having grown up in Serbia (he had a slight accent so I would guess he moved in his teens). Plans to play the 3 Canadian Futures and then he didn't know. Said he felt more confident having a degree under his belt to fall back on (to mix metaphors). Rankings, September 12

31 Raonic, Milos (CH 25) (at start of yr: 156)
124 Pospisil, Vasek (CH 124) (at start of yr: 339)
164 Dancevic, Frank (CH 65) (at start of yr: 269)
266 Chvojka, Erik (CH 266) (at start of yr: 411)
271 Bester, Philip (CH 229) (at start of yr: 278)
277 Duclos, Pierre-Ludovic (CH 259) (at start of yr: 433)
438 Diez, Steven (CH 407) (at start of yr: 466)
573 Polansky, Peter (CH 164) (at start of yr: 207)

Congratulations to Vasek and Erik for yet another career high.

For the first time since soon after he entered the rankings in 2008, Vasek's single ranking is higher than his doubles (148). Vasek is now the 3rd highest ranked player born in 1990 (behind Raonic and Stebe) - we have 2 of the top 3 guys born 1990.

Philip's continuing injury is beginning to tell on his ranking.

And I had to go outside the top 500 to include Peter. At least we have gotten to the end of the major points he had coming off. To the end of 2011 he has only 12 more points to defend. We just have to wish him fortitude in the long climb back up.

Agreed, a good win, and a good scoreline - 6-7(7), 7-6(2), 6-2. I would expect Peliwo to be at the other end of that scoreline as the younger player.

Peliwo has been doing surprisingly well at the pro level, given that his junior record is not that fantastic, and comments that his game is juniorish.

Good start for the Canadian boys (Hugo Di Feo, Brayden Schnur and Filip Obucina) at the Junior Davis Cup, won 3-0 against Germany.

The opening rubber of Canada’s tie against Germany lasted two hours 45 minutes and resulted in a win for Brayden Schnur, who prevailed 26 75 97 over Adrian Obert.

Scores were:
Schnur d. Obert 2-6 7-5 9-7
Di Feo d. Marterer 7-6(4) 7-6(7)
Di Feo/Schnur d. Marterer/Wagner 6-4 6-7(5) 6-1

They'll probably need to win all three matches to make the semifinals, they still have to play Thailand and the #1 seeds, Britain.

Schnur d. Itsaro 6-4 6-3
Di Feo/Schnur d. Itsaro/Kaewsuto 4-6 6-3 6-4

Next up the big test, the British, who haven't dropped a match yet. A win sends the team through to the semifinals, a loss to the 5th-8th playoff bracket.

Diez won again, so he won Spain F39 and F41 in back to back weeks (F40 was canceled). That is 5 futures events he has won in his career I believe.

His ranking should go to around 345 when all the points are added to get a total of 113 points. This will be a career high by over 50 ranking spots. He nothing to defend until April either so he could keep going up.

YEAR END GRADES
Well, it's time to grade our Canadian players with the season wrapping up,

Ok, here are my opinions, my grading on our boys.

http://www.livetennisguide.com/wp-content/uploads/Milos-Raonic5.jpg
Milos Raonic

Grade: A+

Season Review: Well, what can I say that hasn't been said about Milos. The guy is a stud and a potential GS champion. He went from #156 in the world to #25 and became the first Canadian to win an ATP singles titles since Greg Rusedski was Canadian back in 1995. He is the highest ranked Canadian in singles ever! He is ranked in the top 5 on the atp tour for ace count and first serve points won; and without a doubt has one of the most fearsome serves on tour. The guy is a mental giant and never wavers when it matters like Sampras. Season highlights include a 4th round showing at the Australian Open, a title in San Jose, a finalist showing in Memphis, a semi final showing in Stockholm and a decent string of wins on the atp claycourt season which historically has been a weak link for many Canadian pros.

http://answers.bettor.com/images/Articles/thumbs/extralarge/Vasek-Pospisil-and-Matteo-Viola-move-into-the-quarterfinals-of-2011-Rimouski-Challenger-Tour-bpzn5u2lodn303zgycnn00u1-.jpg
Vasek Pospisil

Grade: A

Season Review: Aside from Raonic, 21 yr old Vasek Pospisil was the second biggest surprise of the season. He went from being a futures player at the beginning of the season to an atp tour level player within the course of one season. He singlehandidly led us back into Davis Cup world group with his heroic performances and has shown us he's got game. His all around style of play has helped him pull off wins over Juan Ignacio Chela, John Isner, Dudi Sela and other top 100 players. In only his first year in qualifying for Slams, he managed to qualify on his second attempt at the US Open and managed to pick up a first round win. He also displays a similar mental toughness Milos shows. Season highlights include 2 key Davis Cup victories, US Open round 2, Rogers Cup round 2, Valencia round 2, and very solid challenger showings. Essentially, he's giving us fans a reason to hope and be excited for next season of what he can do next!

http://tennis-pronostics.com/sites/default/files/photo_gallery/156015-erik-chvojka.jpg
Erik Chvojka

Grade: B

Season Review: After sustaining an injury which kept Chvojka out of action last season and affecting his peformances earlier this season, Erik has managed to bounce back to a form he's never played at. For a guy who's been a mainstay futures player, 2011 has proved to be a good stepping stone for Erik. Nearly quitting earlier in the season and ranked around 400, Erik piled up a good pile of wins in Australian futures event which propelled him to play at the challenger level where's been ever since. He played at the Rogers Cup for the first time taking Alex Dolgopolov to 3 sets and is the no.1 ranked player from Quebec. He is now ranked at a career high at 239 and hopefully he will rise higher into next season.

http://www.tennis-pronostics.com/sites/default/files/photo_gallery/photo_1072472_resize.jpg
Pierre Ludovic Duclos

Grade: B

Season Review: After a dismal first 6 months of the season for PLD, a finalist showing at a Challenger event in Mexico gave momentum for Pierre for the rest of the season. The no.2 ranked player from Quebec made a 3rd round showing at the Winston Salem Open beating Ryan Harrison on the way. He would also score wins over various Challenger events and stay ranked around the top 300 for singles and is actually at a career high now at #253.

http://cdn4.wn.com/pd/b8/2e/e2c84215aa75be57339522530569_grande.jpg
Phillip Bester

Grade: B

Season Review: Next up, Phillip Bester had a solid season overall. He reached a career high at 229 this seaons which tells us what kind of season he has had so far. He played a key role in Davis Cup winning his crucial rubber in Ecuador for us. He would go on to have moderate success on the Challenger tour. Injuries may have knocked his ranking for now but next year he will bounce back without question.

http://blogues.cyberpresse.ca/tennis/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/danc.jpg
Frank Dancevic

Grade: C+

Season Review: Frank Dancevic..once a Canadian hope, a former top 100 player, once Canada's no.1 ranked player for several years and seemed destined for top 50 but now, this season has been telling for Dancevic. Frank started out the season strong it seemed with a quartefinal showing in Johannesburg but a slew of bad losses accumulated during the course of the season including a 5th set choke job to Mello in Wimbledon and worst of all, a 5 set loss to Daniel Garza in Davis Cup. The disapointments would continue as Frank was not given a wildcard at the Rogers Cup and had to play qualies instead but never went anyways. He would be later left off Canada's Davis Cup team. As of now, it seems as though Tennis Canada and Frank are not on good terms. It seems as Frank has lost his mental fortitude this season for he has lost lots of many close matches when they were matches he should've won. He's gone from being a mainstay Atp level player to barely a challenger level player. It has been a disapointing season so far for Frank. We shall see what happens next season for him cuz he's still got gas in the rank without question. On the positive note, He managed to qualify for all 4 Grand Slams, something no active Canadian player has done this season.

http://www.cbc.ca/gfx/images/sports/photos/2006/09/10/polansky-p-us-open_cp_10708386.jpg
Peter Polansky

Grade: C

Season Review: Finally, we have Peter Polansky who like Frank Dancevic has had a disapointing season. For a player who's qualified for the Grand Slams before, this season has proved disastrous for him. He didn't qualify for any Slam events and didn't participate at the Rogers Cup. It seems as though he lost his mental resolve during the season and suffered many early round losses at many events. Some people would say his first round loss to Schoorel in Wimbledon qualies was the breaking point for him. The loss would be damaging to his pysche for a season that was already going downhill fast. After regrouping and rediscovering his game, Polansky elected to play at the futures level again and start all over. So far it's been paying off. He managed to grab a string of futures titles and so far it looks like he's going back to the challenger/atp level again.

Krainik lost in the final round of qualies in the US future this week but got in as a LL replacing the number 2 seed and won his opening match over a player ranked 676 in the world, good win for him, and always good to add 1 more ranking point to the tally. He plays a player ranked 786 next.

Pokrajac got in as a WC and was supposed to face the 7 seed but he withdrew so he got a LL, and won in 3 sets. He plays Jason Kubler next who has been on a good string of wins including one over Pokrajac a couple weeks ago I believe. The other seed in his quarter lost in round 1 so should he beat Kubler he'd have a nice shot at the semis

some pretty good luck for our guys there this week, one getting in as a LL, and the other facing a LL, both replacing seeeds so they wouldn't have to play a seed in their first 2 rounds

In an offseason event in Toronto, Milan Pokrajac beat Peliwo 36 76 63 in the final. Peliwo beat Choi, Daigle (beat Zach White) and Beran to make the final. Pokrajac beat Monette and Garcia to make the final.

Another tournament to begin on Tuesday in Toronto, seeds are:

1. Milan Pokrajac
2. Pavel Krainek
3. Marcus Fugate
4. Henry Choi
5. Hugo Di Feo
6. Robert Rotaru
7. Zachery White
8. Jibran Mohamdi

I think Tennis Canada should bring in Jesse Levine to represent us at Davis Cup. He's originally from Ottawa,Ontario and he is currently ranked #133. He is only 24 and has already been ranked in the top 100 by 21.

Imagine how our Davis Cup would look with him on the team? Marty Laurendeau would have another option as his disposal.

Our team would look like,
Rubber 1 goes to Milos Raonic
Rubber 2 goes to Jesse Levine
Doubles Rubber goes to Vasek Pospisil/Adil Shamasdin
Rubber 4 goes to Milos Raonic
Rubber 5 goes to either Jesse Levine or Vasek Popisil or Frank Dancevic.

I would have more confidence having Levine play for our second rubber in Davis Cup than Frank for sure. Frank, Vasek and Peter seems to show a weak mental fortitude with Frank being the worst and Peter second worst.

In terms of talent,
Raonic (top 30 talent)>>>>Levine/Dancevic/Pospisil (top 100 talent)>>>>Polansky (top 200 talent)>>>>Chvojka/PLD/Bester (top 250 talent)>>>>>Diez/others (top 500 talent)

Plus the rankings would look different
1. Raonic - #26
2. Pospisil - #111
3. Dancevic - #132
4. Levine - #133
5. Chvojka - #221
6. PLD - #239
7. Polansky - #279

If the Rogers Cup started now, Milos would get in main draw directly while we can give wildcards to Vasek, Jesse, Frank and Erik. Qualie wildcards can go to Diez, Polansky, and Filip. PLD can get in qualies draw on his rank alone.

All Tennis Canada has to somehow convince him to join us. Cuz its sure as hell he's playing for the US Davis Cup team.

The Rogers Cup should be played on grass. I also think they should relocate the national training centre to Kelowna, BC. The place is like Spain. It's perfect for Tennis Canada. Ideally, they should set up a bunch of claycourts and hard courts, maybe a few grass courts and get former pros like Carlos Moya to teach Canadians how to play tennis properly. Also, I think that Canadians players should model themselves as grasscourt specialists like their mother country Britain.

1. Milos Raonic - #25
2. Vasek Pospisil - #99 (cracks the top 100 for first time!)
3. Frank Dancevic - #118 (is nearing the top 100)
4. Peter Polansky - #206 (is nearing the top 200)
5. Erik Chvjoka - #217 (has reached a career high! close to cracking the top 200!)
6. Pierre Ludovic-Duclos - #232
7. Steven Diez - #301
8. Phillip Bester - #527 (his slide down the ranks continues!)
9. Filip Peliwo - #581 (his semifinal run in Rimouski skyrocketed him to a career high rank!)
10. Milan Pokrajac - #779
----
11. Kelsey Stevenson - #999

So we have 11 players in the top 1000. I think by the time the Olympics comes around, we will have 3 guys in the top 100 (Raonic, Dancevic, Pospisil). When's the last time we 3 Canadians in the top 100? 1997? (Connell, Lareau, Nestor). It's been a while since we've seen that.

Congrats on Vasek on cracking the top 100! and Erik for reaching career high! He looks like he will crack the top 200 soon.

Erik and Steven will playing a Challenger in Mexico. Vasek, Frank and PLD will be playing at a challenger in Florida. All 5 guys have good draws.

A review of progress for Canadian players in the first third or so of the year:

The following players have reached a career high in 2012:

Raonic (24), Pospisil (99 - today!), Chvojka (217 - today!), Duclos (229), Diez (301 - today!), Peliwo (581 - today!)

The following players are ranked higher now than at beginning of year:

Raonic, Pospisil, Dancevic, Polansky, Chvojka, Duclos, Diez, Peliwo, Pokrajac

The only top player to be going downhill is Bester (inevitable given his injuries).

Peliwo is now I think the highest ranked player born 1994 or later.

All pretty impressive. Of course we will have to see what happens in the rest of the year, but given that most of our players had injuries in the summer last year, there should definitely be opportunities for them to climb further, with little to defend over those months.

I could see both Polansky and Raonic also getting to career highs some time this season. Not too sure if Duclos repeats his challenger final but he is getting better results in challenger events this year overall than he did last year.

Probably just tired, I think he will try to qualify in Houston next week.

Kelsey Stevenson also beat the 8th seed in Vietnam F1. Plays a qualifier next.
