Also, PP has a website on the way. :)

He should focus less on being popular and more of his game right now. He is abysmal, hasn't won a match in like forever.. he will probably disappear into oblivion soon the way he's been playing lately.

Oh dear, Peter. Loses 6 games straight, wins 2, and loses the next 6. Hopefully he can find a way of this hole he is in. To think he was Canada's #1 just 6 months ago.

Nice to hear about Diez doing better in Brazil. But I wonder if it is better if we don't know what he is up to, as now I see that he has lost 1st round in this week's Futures.

Snowwy

I'm sure he was tired, he's been losing every week in the first round and then he made the singles SF and a doubles W, so lots of matches last week.

im back..had to take a little break and focus on school there for a while

would just to make a few observations:

1. nice to see milos doing so well,m however unexpected(for me) it may have been

2. peter...what the hell can i say? for a while i thought that the pressure of being the top canadian was starting to hinder him, i thought maybe he felt like he had to do something but now with the spoitlight on milos he still isnt doing anything. Dont know when he will get out of this slump or if he really is destined to just fade away.

3. frank..just dissappointed . i expected him to be top 100 again by now and frankly he's pissing me off

4. vasek has been making slight progress but he still hasnt had that win that truly makes you say WOW

5. philip..i actually expected him to be able to do better in the challengers but from what i have been able to see he has struggled

You may have noticed that Canada will not have a sub-forum this year again (though Milos gets his own)

http://www.menstennisforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=810

What an awful, awful decision. There is no justification for this. 75% of the European country sub-forums have so little activity you wonder why they are there. 50 people approved the option of a Canada sub-forum - you have to go back months in most Euro sub-forums to find 50 different posters. Why have a poll if a result like this is denied?

Some days I really dont understand MTF. But whatever - complete Euro-bias as usual we have to live with

scoobs
04-22-2011, 07:49 PM
Sorry :)

Try again in the post Wimbledon polling, though.

As it stands, it's nothing to do with euro-bias. You might have a lot of posters but not a lot of elite players to talk about. Other countries who now have very quiet forum probably did have much more activity in the past. Not saying, no - never - just not sure what the need is for one right now - but willing to be persuaded :)

ibreak4coffee
04-22-2011, 07:57 PM
Sorry :)

Try again in the post Wimbledon polling, though.

Scoobs respectfully - I dont think there is any point because this decision wasn't based on facts. The activity on Canada threads has exceeded for the past two years the current sub-forums of most of the Euro countries that have one. There are 10-20 regular posters (daily) - and there were before Milos became a rising star - plus many others who post off and on - and not just for Milos. Additionally, we're adding new posters weekly.

I mean, look at this and tell me how Canada doesn't deserve one

http://www.menstennisforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=139

ONE post in the last week.

Or this sub-forum

http://www.menstennisforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=435

No posts since April 12

Or this sub-forum

http://www.menstennisforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=385

No posts since January 22

To me, this is a clear decision based on the fact that Canada still isn't taken seriously as a tennis country. Because based on activity here, the decision has absolutely no merit - and it takes 5 minutes browsing the sub-forums to come to that conclusion. Virtually every Euro country has a sub-forum while the rest of the world either is denied one or else is grouped as an entire continent.

Either player could have retired, in that 2nd game of the 2nd set, PLD had about 5 BPs, and at one point it was 1-1 in the second set on the SB, so he wasn't struggling.

I saw him at the Rogers Cup in Montreal last year, he was his sister Heidi's hitting partner. My guess is that he follows her on the road, since she probably doesn't have a regular coach, and he ptays tournaments when he can.

Interesting success in Junior Davis Cup - to my surprise the U16 boys have beaten the US! Schnur lost his singles, Di Feo won his and they combined to win the dubs in 3 sets.

Assuming they can get past the Bahamas (who have lost all their matches so far), they should be through to the finals for a second year in a row, which is quite an achievement as it requires beating the US (at least it has in recent years - not sure whether Mexico is still hosting it and therefore still guaranteed one of the N. Am spots).

The U14 boys dispatched Mexico for the loss of only 7 games.

Junior tennis is looking really good at the moment. Don't know too much about Shulman and Scott as they are from the West, but the four that are playing for Canada right now defenitely have a shot at going pro or at least having decent NCAA careers. I hope at least a few go pro though, and we only have to look at what Milos has done in the last year for motivation.

Rankings for May 2, for Canadians in top 500 - 3 have career highs (congrats to Milos, Philip and Vasek):

25 Raonic, Milos CH
180 Dancevic, Frank (CH 65)
208 Polansky, Peter (CH 164)
238 Bester, Philip CH
257 Pospisil, Vasek CH
383 Chvojka, Erik (CH 343)
440 Duclos, Pierre-Ludovic (CH 259)
451 Diez, Steven (CH 428)

Steve will benefit next week from his Brazilian success but he has points to defend the week after from a Futures win, so they will cancel each other out.

Also in doubles, Shamasdin is at a CH of 67.

I didn't watch his match at the Davis Cup last year so I can't tell you much. But what I can tell you is that it is a very short week for Canadian tennis this week. The only players left are Erik, Steven and Pavel, and I don't really see Pavel lasting that long. I do believe that Erik and Steven can have decent runs. Erik should at least make the Finals and Steven could win the whole thing or lose first round (really he should win it though)

Finally good to see Nguyen in a qualifying draw where he didn't pull out at the last second. I don't necessarily see him qualifying because he really hasn't progressed in the past year and was cut by the NTC, but one match-up that looks interesting is if he gets to play Christian Harrison. They were both promissing young players a few years ago but seem to have lost their way (I believe Harrison was injured or something). I don't think that any of us really saw Edward regressing the way he has. Do you guys have any opinions as to what might have happened? Lack of interest? His game is not maturing enough?

Perhaps distractions away from the court. I've never seen him play, but maybe he had a very junior game that doesn't translate to higher levels.:confused:

I am wondering whether Nguyen is training down in the US. He hasn't shown up at any events in Canada this year, as far as I can see. And doesn't even partner with Canadian boys in doubles.

It is kind of discouraging to see how boys he beat when he was 13-14, like Liam Broady or Mitchell Krueger, are advancing by leaps and bounds, while he is stuck nowhere. (Christian Harrison BTW was injured for a very long time, so it is quite understandable that he is not as advanced).

Just goes to show that you might as well enjoy the success while you have it, as it won't necessarily continue.

Ya I think Broady is like ranked in the 700's already.

Ya Broady has been in futures semi-finals. He'll probably get some wildcards too because of it. Broady's an interesting case, because he's advanced faster than all of the kids who get funding from the British TA, like Golding, Morgan, Hewitt and Marsalek.

And there's players like Quinzi (96) who's qualified into Futures, and Milojevic (95) who's played in 250 qualifying.

big_j_tennis

Nguyen got in the third round of the qualifying draw, winning both his matches 3 and 0.
He then got double-baggeled by Gabriel Moraru (this guy was in the 200s a few years back, if I'm right, but I'd expect Nguyen to put up at least a little resistance...)

Steven won his first round match in a squeaker so don't know if he is still feeling the effects of whatever pain or injury he had in Brazil last week. Interesting to see that Kelsey Stevenson is still trying to get that first point, he was a junior near the top 100 a few years ago and always seems to play these futures in places that seem to have really weak fields. This week he is playing in China F5 and is playing an unranked foe, so let's see if he can get that first point.

Emeraldhands
05-13-2011, 12:53 AM
Just going to give you guys an overview of the points up to date for our Canadian Players (As of May 9 2011). Last year in parantheses:

Milos Raonic: 1093 Points. (68 Points).
Frank Dancevic: 141 Points. (0 Points).
Vasek Pospisil: 97 Points + 18 from Busan so far. (37 Points).
Philip Bester: 63 Points. (12 Points).
Erik Chvojka: 56 Points. (32 Points).
Steven Diez: 31 Points. (+1 from Spain F15). (27 Points).
Peter Polansky: 29 Points. (33 Points).
Pierre-Ludovic Duclos: 28 Points. (48 Points).

No one else has gotten points of significance expect Ahmed El Tabakh and Daniel Chu who got a point each.

Looking at where some of our players are compared to last year at this same point, I would say that the only player going down in the rankings is Duclos. Despite Peter and Steven struggling, they are at about the same amount of points as last year. Philip and Vasek have marked improvement. Frank doesn't have any points to defend for a while so he can only go up. And Milos is pretty self-explanatory.

If you look at where Milos was last year (68 points) and where Vasek is now (115 points)...

Steven lost in the second round like 6-2,6-0 (ugh).
Pavel got a LL in USA F12 but couldn't do anything with it.
Vasek is still going strong in Busan.
Kelsey was unable to get that first point but still seems to be trying on a limited schedule.
Mo Niaki lost in the second round of USA F12 Qualies and Edward lost in Q3 of the same tournament.
Don't know if anyone has noticed but a young junior from Canada (Antoine Richard) has been trying to qualify for a futures event in Europe pretty much all year long but has yet to make it. He constantly makes it far in Qualies though (I think he is born in 94).
That is pretty much it for this week I guess

If anyone is interested, it looks like Kelsey's match is going to have livescores on bet365 (They are starting to have livescores of futures events, this is sweet!) Let's see if he can carry that confidence from a few weeks ago and get that fourth point.

Just wondering if anyone knew what happened to Klingemann? He changed nationality last year to Canadian, and just disappeard?

Kelsey won his first round match yesterday 6-3, 7-6 to get his fourth point. I don't see him beating the first seed but what an improvement from him. He couldn't win squat the last two years. This should put him in the top 1200 in two weeks. Mo Niaki lost in the Quarter and he will have five points which will put him at around 1100.

According to the Nadal chat thread she isn't posting here for a while, not sure why, but they said she'd be back soon. Just like when Misty disappeared, I kinda miss her crazy posts.

Here are the Canadians playing this week:

Frank is playing a Challenger in Rijeka and got the first seed in first round.
Pierre played in Prostejov Qualies and lost first round.
Mo Niaki got direct entry into Iran F1 and is thru to the second round.
Kelsey is playing in Indonesia F2 where he Qualified for the Main Draw. Get another Qualifier in the first round.
Nicolai and Ahmed El Tabakh were in Italy F12. Ahmed lost in Qualies round 2 while Nicolai Qualified. He gets the fifth seed in the first round.
George Jecminek and Zach White are both in Mexico F5 and both have made the final round of Qualies.
Erik is the fourth seed in Poland F3 and should have a pretty good run here.
Antoine Richard (has this kid taken a week off this year?) lost in Q2 of Spain F18 but almost got his first point last week.

And in the Junior French Open we have Filip and Carol who have made the second round.

I think I pretty much covered everyone here, did I miss anything?

Frank lost in R1 to Kavcic.
Niaki lost in QFs to Vohk.
Stevenson lost in R2 to Verryth.
Haessig lost in R1 to Grassi.
White lost in R1 to Diaz-Barrigue.
Erik is in the QF in Poland.

Mo Niaki won his first round at the Iran F2 futures. He is really taking advantage of these week tournaments/good draws to get some points.
Kelsey is set to play an unranked qualifier in the first round of an Indonesian futures.
Erik is still in Poland, where he is the fifth seed, playing a guy ranked 725.

How much longer till Peter is the 6th best ranked Canadian? Bester is certainly poised to take him over, and if he keeps up the losing its not out of the realm of possibility that Chvojka can overtake him with continued success in the futures.

Sucks that only one Canadian made it to the final round of qualifying. I wouldn't expect Vasek to reach the final of the qualifying rounds, but Peter really should have made it if he wasn't in a slump. Pete is more experienced and should have reached the MD, or at at least the final qualifying round. The fact that a newcomer (Vasek) won one match more than the experienced Peter is kinda.. sad. I mean, it's good for Vasek of course, but it's sad to see what kind of state Peter is in. The slump is really bad, and it just doesn't seem to change.. unfortunately :(

This is not a fair comparison. Vasek played a clay courter with no grass skills - Peter played an up and coming player who should figure out how to play on all surfaces and is a top 100 player. Vasek wouldn't have beaten Schoorel by all accounts and lost in straights to a more experienced player whereas Peter had the match on his racket. Even had Peter won though, would have been in tough against Guccione. I think its logical neither made it, but the difficulty of their first round opponents was far different.
