Doha QF: Nadal d. Gulbis 7-6, 6-3

Gulbis came with his aggressive play but had an erroneous shot-selection at critical times (what's up with the :retard: drop shots?), partly due to the pressure of Nadal who responds everything, I guess. Rafa was sweating a lot and on one occassion he asked the trainer about it who replied to him he just needed to drink more water (it was during a time off between games, he didn't ask for a medical time-out) but all in all he played a damn good match. Solid ball-striking, amazing passing shots, good movement, 27/11 Winners to Unforced Errors ratio and above all a good mentality to keep it up against a very talented but unstable guy like Ernie.

Proportional guy this Gulbis. His IQ is definitely in correlation with his age

Should have been a routine 6/3 6/3, but Nadal is sick. Basically nothing on his serve right now. Still, 27/11 W/UE ratio, he was aggressive when needed. RoS still needs work.

As I stated before Gulbis has the game but not the mentality to be a top player. Nadull's serve is a worry though,,was threaten to being broken again in the second set after he secured the break.

Mugbis made a right mess of that. Nadal was clearly feeling problems in the first set, his game went awol. Gulbis had triple bp, missed em all of course, and then decided to play stupid dropshots on every big point for the rest of the match.

Ben.

Rafa was good today overall, some poor errors and at times lacked aggression and allowed Gulbis to dictate, but some sublime winners and volleys in there too. Gulbis continues to frustrate, hope he can gain some consistancy this year and cut out those ridiculous drop shots.

Rafa, being a great contender...YES.

That first set was :o Rafa was up 4-2, then I it was 4-4. Rafa seemed to be choking a lot in the first set. He should have won it 6-2 imo. But it looks like he managed to pull himself together and played better in the second.

On the other hand.. he has a fever, and he ALWAYS struggle against Gulbis. I knew this match would be tough. At least he won and he's in the semis. That's all that matters :) Vamos!

:yeah: Good to win in straights too. The service game at 4*-4 was a choke, no question. He dug himself out of 0-40.

Efficient stuff from Rafa. Serve was pretty off but had enough for Ernie. He'll be back with a vengeance I'd hope.

Get the feeling Davy will give him a sterner test but same result.

Gulbis needs to learn to be more patient when pulling the trigger. He did so from ridiculous positions at times and he's just not good enough to pull off that kind of stuff. I don't know why he kept trying to laser it up the line when he was on the full stretch.

I agree with everything you said here. He started the match well, but then Gulbis started to play better and took it to a tiebreak. I wouldn't say Rafa started to choke, Gulbis just picked it up. However, Rafa won the tiebreak and he looked even better in the second set where he played very good. A solid match from rafa overall.

Is it weird that he sweats a lot? Isn't it like 50 degrees down there? lol

sokk: Rafa has fever since 3 days.
I agree Gulbis raised his game from 1-4 to a tie break, which is good.
As this week, he was down 0-5 in tie break against Hanescu but managed to win the set nevertheless.
So it is an improvement from his part.
But against Nadal, no mistake is allowed because he feeds himself from them, sick or not.
And Gulbis has not lost his temper after his errors, which is also another sign of his mental progress.
He defended his points from last year, so all is not negative for 2011 after all.

Why is Rafa playing this tournament sick and all? He should be resting for the Australian Open. Poor decision that hopefully doesn't effect his performance at the Australian Open.

exactly. in all honesty, what i remember is that he said he was coming off a fever. the only "problem" is that he's sweating more than normal now but i'm sure it's not a concern to play well, which is exactly what he did against gulbis.

i can relate to that as the same thing happens to me when i come off a fever, even when all the typical annoying symptoms of a fever are gone.

Lacko can win a set 6-0 off Rafa and Gulbis can't even win a set?

Rafa said himself he decided to take it easy in second set against Lacko to save strength for the third.
I think if he used same strategy for Gulbis, the chances of Gulbis taking the whole match would be too big.

From presser after Lacko match:
RAFAEL NADAL: Well, when I lost the serve for the second time in the second, I didn’t fight anymore, because I say, Well, we gonna rest a little bit now and try my best in the third.

Yes, that was when the score was 4-0 and Nadal was already getting crushed. Stop pretending like he was tanking during the whole set. At most he might have given away his third service game in that set but I doubt it. I am under the impression that players shockingly enough don't like getting bageled and usually try to avoid it.

bagel is no big issue, mugka_n........it does not bother a mental giant like nadal.......besides he's not a great server by any means and no shame in getting bagelled once in a while.......also no one gives a fuck about whether he hit a between-the-legs circus shot or not, what counts is whether he won or not.......he won, so he's happy for that......that's all.......fool.......
