Troicki stroke lucky to avoid double bagelaization here.

Very good stuff from Federer. Really stepped it up from his last 2 matches.

Only thing not good was BP conversion. Otherwise very strong match.

Troicki really should consider a new career.

Easy one, good tennis but Troicki was well below my expectations. Might be a good test against Tsonga.

Assured performance from Fed. He was quite strong on serve and had a high 1st serve percentage. His break point conversion rate was not so great, but at least he had a good number of opportunities to make up for the ones he lost. The super-aggressive returns of serve are still missing but on the other hand he was coming to the net a bit more.

Tsonga up next. Could be a great match.

Yeah, sure, he lost to Federer and his prize money is $2,271,208.

yes it wasn't a clean performance and he was too wasteful on bpts, but it was a joy to watch Federer's immense variety on full display  he played just about every pattern of play known in tennis, even a double-handed backhand lol

This bp conversion derives from total control of this match. It wasn't close even for a second.

This was one of those matches where no matter how many BP`s Federer missed he still got the next one as Troicki served poorly. At the end of the day Federer will probably take 4/16 if his opponent goes 0/0 at break points conversion.

Yeap but is it a reason to be so mean? Troicki is not a top20 player but he is a nice one and 2011 season has just started. This week, many seeds were eliminated in the 1st round and that's not a reason to give up.

Sorry, I might have missed if he used it during play, but didn't he hit that after a point was over? If so, I think he was just amusing himself...like when Djokovic hit a couple of single-handed backhands in his practice during the WTF.

Expected. Federer would have beaten Schoorel and Chiudinelli easier but he didn't have to play his best against such weak players, I suppose he began the match with Troicki with a bigger respect and that's the consequence - trashing the Davis Cup hero.

lol federer got the message last night that nadal has a fever and is a good chance to beat an injured/tired/sick rafa again.
afterall his last 2 official wins over rafa was in 2009 madrid where rafa was tired from that marathon match against djokovic and 2010 tour finals again rafa was tired after that marathon against murray. cant remember the last time fed beat a 100% fit and fresh rafa.

fed stepped it up today to destroy the field to make sure he reaches the final in doha and make it 3 dodgy wins over rafa and close up that h2h. fed played really well in that madrid 2009 semi once he knew rafa was tired and same in the tour final semi vs novak when he knew rafa was tired but in the US open semis choked when he knew he was facing a fresh and inform rafa in the final.
smart man this federer.

and rafa like a deer in the headlights is walking straight into the trap by playing with a fever.

i find this situation funny, u have a very smart guy in federer who knows his limits and knows how to play a smart schedule and then there is the totally lost/confused/gullible dude in rafa, who will play on until he gets injured like in 2009.

anyways just an observation.
well played roger on ur destruction of troicki.

All the excuses... You are just repeating yourself and it never makes sense. How can Nadal be so tired after one best of three match? You can hardly call it a marathon match. In the 1992 US Open Edberg played three consecutive five setters before the final. I suppose he might have felt a little stiff, but he won the final in four sets.

Oh gee, the excuses for Nadal just in case he loses the Australian Open is out in full force already? Who plays a tournament before a slam with a fever? If it's bad, don't play.

Anyways, Fed played great today but then Troicki was awful. And what happened to Fed's aces?

Good to see he is gearing up for his defense in Melbourne. Jo has his work cut out for him if dodge plays like this.

Lordy lord why must EVERYTHING be about Nadal ???? What you say above does not strike me as an an observation. You're a serial fantasist. Your fantasy novels would be best sellers. You wouldn't see those agressive returns till the AO/SF or Final if he makes it that far.Its not his natural game to hit agreesive returns off the back-hand wing,, to hit those regularly he needs to "time" them properly & have confidence in the shot, also because his frame is wilson pro 90 I believe ,in essence he has a smaller sweet spot than most of the other top pros. So timing is even more critical, that why you see alot of shanks of the bh.
So match play is vital for him(bh) to get in rhythm /timing of that wing to take the ball on the rise.If you follow fed his bh comes "alive" after a long string of successfull tournies.

This ballerina-like pussy called Federer has no business playing tennis, which is a game for big manly men who moan when they strike the ball and don't hesitate to remove their shorts from their asscrack if and when things get uncomfortable. This all-luck Swiss might as well retire now to save himself from further embarrassment such as winning slam titles and the like.
