held the first game second set break right thru to 6-4... very mens pro... nice

Istomin was horrible, but Ebden did what he had to do to win the match under the circumstances so credit to him - he could have quite easily handed it back to Istomin, like he almost did at 5-1 in the first set. He was also a double break up in second so probably 4 and 4 was flattering.

Having said that, Istomin threw in double faults twice on break points, and again at 30-30 in the first game of the second set to give Ebden the break point, and his first serve didnt fire all day.

In the second set Ebden was 4-1 up double break, Istomin got one back but he managed to hold out to 0.

Excellent stuff from Ebden, proving he is deserving of his AO wildcard. Will be good test for him against Toad, hopefully he puts in another sound performance.

I like Ebden's game, very neat and tidy. But no dangerous shots though.

He seems to lack power so he will have a hard time against pushers.
But overall a good game.

Was the roof closed? Is it such bad weather in Australia?

Yeah it was raining in Brisbane today.

Good to see he's added some power to his game, but I'd like to see him put on a bit of muscle. Might be my TV, but those arms look pretty skinny. I think he'll be a solid player in the next few years, but would do well to avoid a pantsing against Söderling.

He is pretty gangly, not a stick man but no hull either.
