Bubka did what he had to do. DGT was hilariously shit. Every time he tried something other than a forehand blast, the results were hilarious. Drop shots and drop volleys bouncing before the net, backhand slices never making it more than six inches off the ground. Too big.

Bubka has a pretty big game. His average serve speed was over 200kmph and he hit the lines near the end when a player of his ranking could have choked.

Anyone know why he got a WC? He looks a better player than his ranking suggests anyway

Excellent serving stats for Bubka.74% 1st serves with 81% pts won behind it. Service action reminds me a little of Isner with less of a knee bend.

Bubka's serve put him in pole position. Surely going to vault up the rankings. Quite a jump in performance.

Okay, so last year Sergey Bubka Sr was president of the IAAF. The vice-president of the IAAF, Dahlan Al-HAmAd is from...well, take a guess. Also while Bubka was president, the World Indoor Athletics champs were held in...well, guess.

The only good things by DGT was a couple of serves in the 2nd set, maybe also 1-2 shots that bounced low.

When he had bad phases, gosh those were properly bad.

I first saw Bubka in the GBR vs. Ukraine Davis Cup tie a couple of years ago and believed back then that if he could use his big serve and hone the rest of his game he'd be a half-decent prospect. Injuries have set him back in recent months, but let's see what he is capable of this year...he has been into the top 200 before.

But, as you say, this match is fairly meaningless. DGT was dreadful in the first set, and certainly apart from the serving performance Bubka wasn't amazing from the back of the court...he hit quite a few high balls that better players would have dealt with ruthlessly.

DGT was beyond bad. Maybe Brigadier Al-Hamad leant on him...
